He also won more aerial duels on average (6.2) than any Hammers man domestically, with news now emerging that he has been rewarded for these efforts.

Tudor in line for England recall

Alex Tudor is the likely replacement for Dominic Cork in the England team to meet Sri Lanka in the second Test, which starts tomorrow at Edgbaston

Stephen Lamb29-May-2002Alex Tudor is the likely replacement for Dominic Cork in the England team to meet Sri Lanka in the second Test, which starts tomorrow at Edgbaston. Cork aggravated a groin strain in the first Test at Lord’s, and has made only limited appearances for Derbyshire since.England are also steeling themselves for the possible comeback of Sri Lanka’s star bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan, who took 16 wickets at The Oval in his previous Test appearance in this country, at The Oval in 1998. However he was limited to just 14 wickets in the three-Test series that England played in Sri Lanka early last year.”The last series was a triumph for the coach, but also for the players,” said the England captain Nasser Hussain.”There’s no point giving the players stick when they don’t do well, but thenwhen they do well say well done to the coach. What he tried to do was to enforce the players’ own game and their way of playing onto the situation and I think that was good coaching and good playing.”Being over here is going to be different. In those few months and on thattour we were all brought up on spin and I’m sure a lot of our boys haven’t seenthat much spin this season, I know I haven’t.”Hussain stressed the importance of individual players having a game plan if Muralitharan plays at Edgbaston, and expects Sri Lanka to be a powerful force whether he plays or not.”It will all be about reinforcing the mental preparations you need if Murali or any of their spinners play,” he said.”Just because we’ve played him once doesn’t mean we’ve sorted out how to play Muralitharan, otherwise he wouldn’t have the wickets he’s got. If he plays everyone will have to play him with their own game plan.”What everyone has got to be reminded of is that we are playing against aformidable side with or without Muralitharan. Everyone still has that superiorEnglish complex of `we’re England and we’re going to beat them’.”This is a bloody good side we’re playing against and unless we’re at our best, as we showed at Lord’s, we will come unstuck whether Murali plays or not.”First blood has yet to be drawn in the three-Test series, England having fought back to draw the Lord’s Test after following on.

Liverpool fans mock Timo Werner’s comments

Some Liverpool supporters have been mocking Timo Werner’s claims that he’s happy he didn’t join the Reds.

Jurgen Klopp has been largely successful in the transfer market during his time at Anfield, making a host of sensational signings including Mohamed Salah, Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, to name just a few.

Liverpool were heavily linked with Werner last summer, with the German seen as someone who could excel in this Reds team. Instead, the 25-year-old opted to join Chelsea, but despite winning the Champions League, he has struggled for form at Stamford Bridge.

Werner scored just six goals in 35 Premier League appearances in his first season in England, with his finishing leaving a lot to be desired at times.

Speaking to Bild [via football.london], the striker said he had no regrets about turning down Liverpool, claiming that “it was the right step and the best decision” to move to Chelsea.

Perfoming South Africans in the Lancashire League

The Transco Lancashire League, although hampered by inclement weather, continues to see South Africans doing well with the ball and the bat

Keith Lane01-Jul-2002The Transco Lancashire League, although hampered by inclement weather, continues to see South Africans doing well with the ball and the bat. With most of the South Africans only getting two matches completed in the past month, Andre Seymore with innings of 63 and four heads the list followed by Pierre Joubert scoring 55* and 12*. Andrew Hall scoring 55* and three has also been successful with the ball taking 5/37 and 4/42. Joubert could only manage one wicket in his two matches.Paul Adams getting through a lot of overs seems to be over his early season stutters returning bowling figures of 5/71 and 5-61 with the ball and seven and 22 with the bat.Jacques Rudolph has not been as successful this past month with scores of three and 23 and bowling figures of 1/24 and 1/82.Con de Lange with only one match in the month scored 50 but could not get a wicket.Martin van Jaarsveld scored 35 and took no wickets in his only match.

Spurs eye Rossi

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham are set to target a bargain move for Los Angeles FC striker Diego Rossi as Daniel Levy and co search for summer reinforcements.

The Lowdown: Spurs target a striker

Harry Kane has indicated his desire to leave the club this summer (Sky Sports), which means Levy will need to sign a new striker to replace him if he departs.

It appears Spurs now have their eyes on an unexpected but interesting option who is currently plying his trade in the United States.

The Latest: Spurs eye Rossi surprise

It is being reported that Spurs are interested in signing Rossi from MLS outfit LAFC this summer.

It is believed the 23-year-old would cost Tottenham around £10m – far less than the £36m Benfica want to part ways with Carlos Vinicius, so perhaps Rossi could arrive as the new deputy, rather than a direct replacement for Kane.

It would certainly be a surprise to see the Lilywhites splash out on a player from such an inferior league, but Rossi has shown a lot of promise.

The Verdict: Bargain move

Rossi may be a generally unknown name in Europe, but has been enjoying himself in the MLS. He has 56 goals in 107 games for his current club since making the switch from Uruguayan giants Penarol three years ago (Transfermarkt), while he won the league’s Young Player of the Year last season.

Teammate Pablo Sisniega called him a “special” player after Rossi netted four times in a 6-2 win over LA Galaxy (via angelsonparade.com).

Of course, the MLS lacks the competition and quality of the Premier League, but at £10m and aged just 23, Rossi could represent a bargain deal for Tottenham, which would even enable them to go out and bring in another top class forward as well.

In other news, Tottenham are interested in signing this 22-year-old star.

Hawks licking their feathers after shock defeat

How on earth do you report a match that for 98% of the time was rather boring, with Hampshire Hawks apparently cruising to victory, and that then suddenly turned upside down, with an amazing Essex Eagles win?

Vic Isaacs14-Jul-2002How on earth do you report a match that for 98% of the time was rather boring, with Hampshire Hawks apparently cruising to victory, and that then suddenly turned upside down, with an amazing Essex Eagles win?Essex chose to bat first on a slow wicket, and their innings started like an express train, with 47 runs in the first seven overs. It was the introduction of Tremlett that started to bring respectability to the score, with two wickets for nine runs in his first spell. Mascarenhas made up for conceding 15 in his first over with 8 more tidy overs, and Tremlett finished with a career-best four for 25 as the Eagles, thanks to a late run from Aftab Habib, finished with exactly 200 in their 45 overs.Despite the slow pitch, the Hawks openers Neil Johnson and Derek Kenway put on 62 comfortably. Following the fall of the first wicket, Mascarenhas upped the tempo, with another half century stand with Johnson, and a third stand with Crawley saw Hampshire reach 177-2. With six overs remaining, they needed just 24 for victory with 8 wickets in hand. But the comfort zone was soon to change. Crawley was enticed forward by Napier and was well stumped by Andy Flower – 177-3 (39.5 overs). Prittipaul was out second ball, bowled by Middlebrook at the start of a spell that saw him take four wickets for just 10 runs. 180-4 (40.5 overs). With Johnson still holding up one end, Giles White flattered with a quickfire 10 before he was adjudged lbw to Middlebrook. 192-5 (42.2 overs). After a 132-ball stay, Johnson was brilliantly caught by wicket-keeper Flower as the ball bounced off bat and pad. 192-6 (43.1).Nine runs were now needed with four wickets and 11 balls in hand. Skipper Will Kendall faced five accurate balls from Cowan, and to the excitement of the crowd who had suddenly woken up to the match, nine runs were needed off the last Middlebrook over. Pothas ran a single of the first ball, but Kendall then played an exorbitant drive and was ignominiously bowled. 193-7 (44.2 overs). Shaun Udal drove for two, before he too was stumped charging down the wicket. 195-8 (44.4 overs). Finally the bowling hero Chris Tremlett could not make enough contact off the last two balls. The home side were leaping for joy, and the Hawks were licking their feathers in shock.

Wednesday move for Gregory in doubt

Yorkshire Live wrter Steven Chicken has dropped a worrying opinion on Lee Gregory, regarding Sheffield Wednesday’s interest in the attacker.

What’s the talk?

Yorkshire Live writer Chicken has cast doubt over Sheffield Wednesday’s reported swoop for Stoke striker Lee Gregory. Football League World had reported earlier this month that Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Gregory from Stoke on a free transfer this summer.

However, Chicken has now claimed that a move may be unlikely for Gregory. The journalist writes that Gregory’s wages may not fit in with what Wednesday will be able to afford this summer, whilst also ruling out a deal for Preston’s Jayden Stockley for the same reason.

Earlier this year, Derby boss Wayne Rooney claimed Gregory was a “handful” to deal with for opposition players and praised his enthusiasm off the bench. He told RamsTV, as relayed by Derby News:

“I thought Lee Gregory was great for us when he came on. He showed great energy and enthusiasm.

“He was a handful and I think he really lifted the rest of the team when he came on with his energy. I was delighted with him.”

Fans will be gutted

Sheffield Wednesday fans will be gutted if this update from Chicken turns out to be accurate. When the initial report from FLW came out, it appeared as though the club were set to sign an experienced, proven, striker at League One and Championship level.

That could have been a major boost to Darren Moore’s squad as Gregory has shown that he can score goals in the second and third tiers of English football.

The £12k-per-week dynamo has an impressive resume in League One and the Championship. In the third tier, Gregory has scored 35 goals in 78 games and provided nine assists. Meanwhile, Gregory has scored 40 and assisted 18 in 183 Championship appearances throughout his career. This suggests that he is a reliable player at Championship level and that he excels as a goalscorer in League One, the division Wednesday will be in next season.

If Wednesday do miss out on Gregory due to his wage demands then it could be yet another consequence of the ongoing off-field issues.

The Star reported earlier this month that some players were considering handing in their notices due to missed salary payments, as Wednesday continue to struggle with their finances in the midst of the pandemic.

Dejphon Chansiri has been struggling to pay his players and this could now translate into the club not being able to land one of their targets.

Leaders true to form against Championship stragglers

The first day between Surrey and Yorkshire was a pretty fair reflection of the teams’ respective positions at the top and bottom of Division One

Stephen Lamb24-Jul-2002The first day between Surrey and Yorkshire was a pretty fair reflection of the teams’ respective positions at the top and bottom of Division One. Ed Giddins (three for 48) and Rikki Clarke (three for 41) excelled as the Tykes were bowled out for just 172, with none of their batsmen getting beyond 26. Jonathan Batty (78*) and Ali Brown (50) then ensured Surrey were in front by stumps, on 207 for five.Leicestershire look unlikely to improve on their position in second place after day one against fourth-placed Kent, who bowled them out for 131 at Grace Road. Martin Saggers (five for 44) and David Masters (four for 36) were the hosts’ tormentors. England Academy batsman Rob Key then pressed home Kent’s advantage, with an unbeaten 103 as the visitors closed on 183 for four, 52 runs ahead.Nick Knight ended the day just two runs short of a double century as Warwickshire dominated third-placed Sussex at Edgbaston. Mike Powell (57) and Jim Troughton (45) gave Knight useful support as the hosts reached 368 for seven. In Division Two, leaders Middlesex had an indifferent day at Cheltenham, where second-from-bottom Gloucestershire ended the day on 367 for six. A century from Tim Hancock provided the hosts’ main bulwark, while the diminutive Chris Taylor (67), Matt Windows (55) and the newly-reappointed skipper Mark Alleyne (62) all made positive contributions. Abdur Razzaq (four for 93) and Aaron Laraman (two for 82) were the wicket takers.Essex’s mid-season wobble continued as Glamorgan bowled them out for 231 at Chelmsford. Alex Wharf initially reduced the hosts to 38 for three, and they later subsided to 122 for seven before veteran John Stephenson (46) and James Middlebrook (42) managed a partial revival. Glamorgan closed on six without loss in reply.A century from Usman Afzaal set up a healthy Nottinghamshire total against Durham at The Riverside. Afzaal made 103, while Jason Gallian continued his good form with 75 before Paul Franks (60) ensured a respectable total of 362 all out at stumps. Steve Harmison, Mark Davies and Nick Phillips each took two wickets.

Derby County handed Jack Marriott blow

Derby County have been dealt a huge blow to their hopes of keeping Jack Marriott at Pride Park this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a statement posted on the Derby County website, in which the club revealed that the EFL has blocked their move to extend the 26-year-old’s contract for a further 12 months.

The club state that, despite their initial communication that Marriott would remain with the Rams until the summer of 2022, the governing body subsequently withdrew their approval of his registration, with Derby having been in discussions with the player’s representatives and the EFL regarding the deal since January.

Rooney will be livid

While it is not specified as to why the EFL blocked Derby’s attempt to extend the contract of Marriott in the recent club statement, Derbyshire Live claim that the decision could be a result of the Championship club’s ongoing off-field issues.

If this is indeed the case, it would certainly not bode well for Wayne Rooney’s summer transfer business, with the 35-year-old looking to build a squad capable of much more than simply surviving relegation in their upcoming campaign.

And, with the club still currently operating under an embargo imposed by the EFL as a result of Mel Morris’ failure to finalise a deal to sell the club, the manager’s business in the transfer window had already been limited to loan deals and free transfers.

So, while Rooney will undoubtedly be frustrated with the fact that he looks likely to lose the services of the £18k-per-week Marriott this summer, a player whom Stan Collymore dubbed a “maverick,” if the EFL continue to block a number of the Rams’ other offers and bids for new recruits this summer, it will be sure to leave the former England star livid.

Richard Walsh24-Aug-2002Fresh from their quarter final victory over Shropshire in the 38 County Two Day competition at Shifnal last week, Somerset Under 19’s travel to the RAF ground at Vine Lane in Uxbridge to take on Essex in the semi finals on Tuesday and Wednesday this coming week. The side will be strengthened by the inclusion of two Somerset Second Eleven players, all rounder Arul Suppiah and bowler Michael Parsons who plays in place of the injured Tom Moss.Under 19’s team manager Peter Robinson told me: "After last week’s performance we are feeling very confident ahead of the Essex game, particularly with Arul coming back to strengthen the batting and Michael Parsons as the extra bowler."Essex had a comfortable one day win over Cambridgeshire last week to reach this stage of the competition, so will present strong opposition. However if Somerset are successful at Uxbridge the final will be played at Nevil Road Ground in Bristol, on September 1st and 2nd.
