South Africa edge home in low-scoring thriller

South Africa fought back from a difficult start to seal a two-nil victory in the Twenty20 series against West Indies on another scrappy pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsDwayne Bravo top-scored for West Indies with 40 but lost his wicket at a crucial stage of the chase•AFPSouth Africa fought back from a difficult start to seal a two-nil victory in the Twenty20 series against West Indies on another scrappy pitch at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua. After the wretched encounter in the first game, this tense finish was a welcome change. The pitch wasn’t conducive to the boundary-soaked Twenty20 cricket crowds routinely expect but it provided a low-scoring last-ball finish as South Africa edged home.Once again there were only a smattering of spectators, with the powers that be opting to appease TV schedules around the world and stage the match in the early afternoon, rather than under lights in the evening. Those that did turn up would have been disappointed that the home-side’s batsmen couldn’t follow up a disciplined bowling effort that restricted South Africa to 120, a modest total despite the pitch. With West Indies needing 15 from a dramatic last over, Darren Sammy managed to top-edge the second ball for four and then, extraordinarily, took advantage of loose fielding to collect an all-run four when a single looked sketchy. It left five needed from three deliveries but Ryan McLaren held his nerve to leave West Indies a run short. It should never have reached that stage but West Indies are so reliant on Chris Gayle that his dismissal to a fired-up Dale Seyn in the first over set a negative tone from which they could never quite emerge. Andre Fletcher fell soon after for his ninth single-digit score in 14 matches and Dwayne Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul started very cautiously. Bravo, so often a picture of exuberance, was rendered shotless by some disciplined bowling early on from Morne Morkel and Lonwabo Tsotsobe, who came in for Charl Langeveldt and Roelof van der Merwe.Time and again Bravo picked the infielders and had eight from his first 20 balls. By the half-way stage of the innings Chanderpaul and Bravo had put on 24 from 43 painstaking deliveries and West Indies had a solitary boundary in the innings.McLaren, whose 5 for 19 earned him man of the match in the last game, had to wait until the seventh over for his first ball. Like all the quicks he was encouraged by the pitch immediately as a half-tracker trampolined past Bravo’s face to a leaping de Villiers. By that stage the game looked to be drifting away but Chanderpaul began to pick up the singles and Bravo the odd boundary. Though they were choked by Johan Botha’s impressive offspin, 15 was taken from Tsotsobe in the 14th over to ease the equation to 52 off the last six overs. It proved too much as South Africa fought back immediately. Chanderpaul followed up a well-timed pull for six with a series of failed reverse-sweeps and ended up top-edging a catch behind still looking for the shot. When Bravo then fell two overs later the target looked out of reach.West Indies could have been chasing an even easier total had 20-year-old debutant David Miller not helped his side recover from 59 for 5 in a bright 57-run partnership with Botha. He batted with power and a conviction missing from all the other batsmen on this surface to lift the score to a match-winning total. Miller was only included because of a slight groin injury to Jacques Kallis, but South Africa will be cheered by what they saw of the youngster as they try to rebuild their side after the World Twenty20 disappointment.

ten Doeschate tilts the balance for Essex

Two wickets in the last 11 overs from captain Glen Chapple gave Lancashire areal boost on a hard-fought opening day of their County ChampionshipDivision One match against Essex at Old Trafford

ScorecardTwo wickets in the last 11 overs from captain Glen Chapple gave Lancashire areal boost on a hard-fought opening day of their County ChampionshipDivision One match against Essex at Old Trafford. After the visitors were invited to bat despite a covering of grass on thetrack, Ryan ten Doeschate top scored with 85 as they closed on 251 for 6. Openers Billy Godleman and Jaik Mickleburgh, who shared 73 for the first wicket, both hit 39, off 74 and 95 balls respectively, but they fell to left-arm spinner Simon Kerrigan either side of lunch.Kerrigan had left-hander Godleman caught at mid-wicket by Stephen Moore in the26th over and trapped Mickleburgh lbw two overs into the afternoon session toleave the score at 86 for two in the 32nd.Matthew Walker (42) and Ten Doeschate later shared 66 in 17 overs for thefourth wicket before the former chopped on to Sajid Mahmood after tea. Essex looked as if they would claim the day’s honours until Chapple trapped James Foster and Ten Doeschate, who hit 13 fours in 123 balls, lbw late in the day.Chapple finished with two for 41 from 18 overs and Kerrigan 2 for 71 from33. There was a hint of swing for Lancashire’s bowlers – certainly after the ballwas changed midway through the morning by the umpires – but not as much as hasbeen on offer early in previous Championship fixtures here.Runs did not flow for Essex, however, because the likes of Chapple, Mahmood,Daren Powell, Kerrigan and Kyle Hogg all bowled with control throughout theday. Mark Pettini and Walker added 44 for the third wicket in 20 overs before Hogggot had the former well caught low down by gully fielder Mark Chilton. At thatstage the visitors were 130 for 3.That united Walker and all-rounder Ten Doeschate. They navigated their side totea with the addition of another 39 runs, playing well straight and through thecovers. Ten Doeschate reached his 50 off 52 balls in the early evening sunshine but hisalliance with Walker was broken when the former Kent man was cramped for roomtrying to cut Mahmood. That left Essex at 196 for 4.England hopeful Ravi Bopara has been named in the Essex side and will replaceunbeaten Grant Flower when Essex take the field on day two. Bopara was at Downing Street today with the rest of England’s victorious World Twenty20 squad.

Liverpool fans fume at Luis Diaz latest

A number of Liverpool supporters are fuming after journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed there has been ‘no negotiation’ for Porto attacker Luis Diaz.

The Reds are preparing for life without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in January, with the pair on Africa Cup of Nations duty, along with Naby Keita.

It leaves Jurgen Klopp short of attacking options this month and there is of course the potential to sign someone to help fill the void.

[freshpress-quiz id=“375258″]

One player who has been linked with a move to Anfield is Diaz, who has impressed for Porto this season, scoring 12 goals in 15 Primeira Liga appearances.

Taking to Twitter on Saturday, however, Romano claimed that Liverpool have not started negotiations regarding a move for the Colombian, perhaps further suggesting no signings will be made in January.

West Ham fans buzz over Rice claim

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing as a £200 million claim comes to light involving star midfielder Declan Rice.

The England international, amid another fine season at the London Stadium, is being linked with a move away as some of Europe’s biggest clubs reportedly circle.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Rice rejected two new contract offers over the summer and it is believed he hasn’t made any immediate decisions on his future with West Ham.

The Irons and manager David Moyes are chasing Champions League qualification, but as per some sources, their success in doing so may not even influence Rice’s decision to leave.

GSB and the board, however, don’t intent to let him go cheaply as journalist Jim White makes a big claim live on talkSPORT.

“Some interesting news on Declan Rice,” he said this week (via West Ham Zone).

“West Ham fans, don’t panic, he’s not going anywhere, not in this window, that is for sure.

“It was made clear to me, they wouldn’t sell Rice in this window, not for £120million, not for £150million – it’s my understanding, I’m being serious, it would need to start with a two.

“We’re talking north of £200million.”

West Ham fans buzz…

Flocking to this claim, many Hammers fans have been left thrilled as their club take a hard-line stance over the Hammers superstar.

Given his value and ability, it’s little wonder supporters are happy to see West Ham won’t be pushed around in potential negotiations.

Sunderland transfer news on Clarke-Harris

Many Sunderland fans have been left fuming over some transfer news that has emerged on Jonson Clarke-Harris.

As per Alex Crook, Lee Johnson is now ‘keen’ on signing the Peterborough United striker in the January transfer window, but negotiating the fee could be an ‘issue’. The talkSPORT journalist has been told that it could be ‘more than £6m’.

The Black Cats already broke the League One record for a transfer fee paid when they signed Will Grigg from Wigan Athletic for £4m back in 2019, (Sky Sports), so it certainly feels as if this is a big risk. That move did not work out, and Grigg has since left the Stadium of Light.

Nonetheless, Clarke-Harris has not exactly been prolific in the Championship so far this term, scoring just four goals, and even though League One is a step down in quality, £6m+ is a lot of money to risk on a signing who is far from a sure thing.

These Black Cats fumed as the transfer news was shared across Twitter, with one SAFC supporter even going as far as to claim that it is ‘staggering’:

Derbyshire prevail in low-scoring game

20-Jun-2010

ScorecardDerbyshire allrounder Garry Park took three wickets as the visitors claimed an unlikely nine-run Friends Provident t20 win over Northamptonshire. Nicky Boje took 3 for 20 and Zimbabwe international Elton Chigumbura claimed 1 for 8 in four overs as Derbyshire posted what looked a mediocre 109 for nine with Lee Goddard top-scoring with 22. Despite a pedestrian 37 off 46 balls by Alex Wakely, Northants fell 10 runs short of their modest target with Steffan Jones and Tim Groenewald taking two wickets each.Derbyshire won the toss and chose to bat first, but they lost Wes Durston (three) in the second over when he was trapped lbw by former Sri Lanka seamer Chaminda Vaas. South Africa international Loots Bosman made the same score before departing after scooping Jack Brooks to Chigumbura at mid-off.Steelbacks skipper Andrew Hall then bowled Chesney Hughes for 12 to leave the Falcons teetering on 23 for 3. Chigumbura, who was making his home debut, then caught and bowled Derbyshire captain Robin Peterson (14) before Boje trapped John Sadler (five) leg before. The visitors continued to toil, with Jonathan Clare’s six over long-on in the 14th over their first boundary in seven overs before he went for 14 when he smashed Boje to Hall at extra cover.Boje then claimed his third wicket by pinning Park (20) lbw before Hall sent Jones’s offstump cartwheeling, without troubling the scorers.Groenewald made four before launching Hall to Rob White at deep midwicket, with Derbyshire only getting past a hundred in their final over.Chasing 110, Northants lost White (four) in the third over when he sliced Groenewald to Sadler, who took and easy catch at third man, as their chase got off to a sluggish start. Vaas – opening the batting – then hammered 18 off a Groenewald over to get them back on track on his way to 28 before he blasted Peterson to Groenewald at deep midwicket.Boje went for four by knocking Jones to Clare at extra cover before he claimed his second wicket by forcing Chigumbura to edge to wicketkeeper Goddard for two. It was slow going for the hosts afterwards and they lost Wakely when he hammered Park to Clare at deep extra cover.Bosman took David Willey (three) in the same position off Park and the same bowler made wicketkeeper David Murphy edge to Goddard before Groenewald bowled James Middlebrook (one) in the final over.

Monte Lynch to coach Southern Rocks

Former England player Monte Lynch has been signed by the Southern Rocks franchise as head coach for the 2010-11 season

Cricinfo staff04-Aug-2010Former England player Monte Lynch has been signed by the Southern Rocks franchise as head coach for the 2010-11 season. Lynch played only three ODIs for England in 1988, but had a more storied first-class career, representing Gloucestershire, Surrey and Guyana in 359 games.Lynch was born in Guyana before migrating with his family to the UK as a child. After retiring from first-class cricket, he continued playing club cricket in Surrey. This will not be his first stint in Zimbabwe, having played and coached Old Winstonians, then a Harare-based development clube, in the mid-1990s.”He is very happy to come here,” Southern Rocks chief executive Givemore Makoni told . “He can’t wait to return to Zimbabwe. He has wonderful memories of the country and wants to resume the good job he started.”If you notice, we didn’t do too well last season because we had a young side. With his experience, Monte will add a lot of value to the team because the guys will be exposed to quality coaching,” Makoni said.Makoni mentioned Lynch had played a key role with the Old Winstonians, where he was involved in the progress of Zimbabwe cricketers Tatenda Taibu and Stuart Matsikenyeri, who were in primary school at the time. Coincidentally, Taibu and Matsikenyeri will be reunited with their mentor following their move to Rocks ahead of the new season.Lynch becomes the second high-profile coach to join a Zimbabwean side ahead of the upcoming season, after former Australia fast bowler Jason Gillespie signed a deal with Midwest Rhinos.

Wolves eyeing Tom Lawrence

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly amongst a handful of clubs interested in signing Derby County captain Tom Lawrence as the January transfer window approaches its final week.

What’s the latest?

According to TEAMTalk, Bruno Lage’s side are keen on bringing the Welsh winger to Molineux before the window slams shut, with the likes of Brighton, Burnley, Newcastle and Fulham also interested.

Despite all of Derby County’s off-field struggles this season, the Rams skipper has had an impressive campaign so far, netting eight goals and contributing three assists in 24 Championship appearances.

Wayne Rooney’s side look destined for relegation to League One this season, which could prove a factor in the 28-year-old’s potential departure.

Valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, the Welshman could prove to be a bargain for Wolves, as well as provide Derby with some much-needed funds.

Wolves should swoop for Lawrence

With winger Adama Traore looking increasingly more likely to swap Wolves for Tottenham this window, Lage could certainly do with an extra option on the flank.

Predominantly a left-sided winger, Lawrence hasn’t played in the English top-flight since the 2014/15 season when with Leicester City but has bags of experience in the Championship, playing 230 second-tier matches since 2015, including a play-off final with Derby in 2019.

Moreover, the 28-year-old has already surpassed his appearance tally from last season this campaign and has almost tripled his goals tally; he has certainly stepped up to the challenge this term and led by example.

Labelled as “bright” by former Derby correspondent for The Athletic Ryan Conway, the Welshman certainly has quality that Wolves could certainly do with.

According to SofaScore, Lawrence currently averages 2.8 shots per game whilst maintaining an 83% passing accuracy. The Welshman’s defensive contribution has been decent too, making a tackle per game as well as 0.6 interceptions and clearances.

Wolves haven’t been blessed with goals from out wide this season, with the potentially departing Traore the West Midlands outfit’s only winger who has scored in the Premier League this term.

Daniel Podence has been prolific in cup competitions, scoring four goals across the EFL Cup and FA Cup, whilst Francisco Trincao’s only goal in amber and gold came in the League Cup against Nottingham Forest.

Granted, Lage does still have Pedro Neto to welcome back from a long-term injury as well as the recently acquired Portuguese youngster Chiquinho.

However, Lawrence could prove to be a shrewd acquisition for a low fee that gives Lage another option, until the end of the campaign at least.

Newcastle eye Man Utd ace Henderson

Craig Hope has revealed some fresh Newcastle United transfer news involving Dean Henderson.

The Lowdown: Burn on his way?

As per Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, the St. James’ Park faithful have now agreed a £13m fee with Brighton and Hove Albion to sign Dan Burn, adding that he is travelling up to the North East in order to undergo a medical.

He looks set to join Kieran Trippier, Chris Wood and the imminent Bruno Guimaraes on Tyneside, meaning that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium can now focus on other targets before the deadline hits.

It seems as though the priority is still on improving the defensive record even after the move for Burn, judging by the latest news from Hope.

The Latest: Attention on Henderson

According to The Daily Mail journalist, talks have begun this weekend to bring Manchester United’s Henderson to Tyneside on loan:

“Talks have taken place in past 24 hours.”

However, after previously reporting that there was a ‘strong chance’ of a deal, Hope is no longer so positive.

“Never say never, but I’m told Henderson/NUFC now looks unlikely.”

The Verdict: Not a priority

Henderson is undeniably talented – during his incredible spell on loan with Sheffield United, when he kept 35 clean sheets in 86 appearances, his Blades teammate, Sander Berge, hailed him as ‘insane’ and ‘exceptional’.

However, the Toon are already stacked in the goalkeeping department with Martin Dubravka, Karl Darlow and Freddie Woodman, and so they should not be prioritising bringing in a new one – even if Woodman leaves, Eddie Howe will still have two senior shot-stoppers at his disposal.

Furthermore, Henderson currently earns a whopping £120,000-per-week at Old Trafford, and while money is not an object to the new owners, they would probably be expected to pay a large chunk of that on top of a potential loan fee.

Nonetheless, they should focus on other positions, with another striker mooted with Callum Wilson’s injury, and the likes of Alvaro Morata and Dominic Calvert-Lewin still reportedly seen as options.
