3 January signings that could save David Wagner’s job at Norwich

Norwich City still find themselves settling for averageness with 26 games of the Championship season up, the Canaries occupying 13th spot in the division under the disappointing reign of David Wagner to date.

Yet, it looks as if the underwhelming German manager is here to stay at Carrow Road with no real indicators that the ex-Huddersfield Town boss will be relieved of his duties in Norfolk anytime soon.

So, this month's transfer window could see the underperforming 52-year-old scramble about to bring new personnel into the building to kickstart a turnaround in fortunes.

EFL Championship done deals: Every January 2024 transfer

As the January transfer window closes, FFC has you covered for every in and out involving your club in the EFL Championship.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

With that in mind, here are three potential signings Wagner could make this month to save his skin in the Canaries hot-seat…

1 Joshua Stokes

Wagner could well look to the non-league market to sign an explosive talent this January, the sort of purchase that could have the Carrow Road masses off their seats on a consistent basis if all goes to plan.

Joshua Stokes is a player in high demand this January, the Aldershot Town star wanted not just by the Canaries in the second tier according to TEAMtalk but also by the likes of Ipswich Town and Sunderland higher up the rankings in the Championship.

The attacking midfielder warrants such fervent interest in his services too, standing out as a talent who could play at a far higher level by scoring 15 goals in a gung-ho Aldershot side in all competitions this season.

Stokes could well be the goalscoring midfielder Norwich desire if Gabriel Sara ends up leaving this January, a risky signing that could really pay off and get fans back on side watching a player who strides across the turf whenever selected with a smile on his face.

2 Jesurun Rak-Sakyi

rak-sakyi-crystal-palace

This next potential move could also occur off the back of another departure happening in Norfolk, Jesurun Rak-Sakyi coming in on a potential loan deal to the Canaries to fill the void left behind by Jonathan Rowe leaving.

That would be a very hard gap to fill but Rak-Sakyi has shown in the EFL in the past – albeit in League One – that he is equally as tricky and hard to contain as Rowe on his day.

Even if Rowe did stay put at Carrow Road, Rak-Sakyi could displace below-par performers such as Christian Fassnacht if signed.

The current Crystal Palace winger's loan spell at Charlton Athletic during the 2022/23 season was the making of the 21-year-old, blossoming into a potent attacker at the Addicks with 15 goals and nine assists notched up from 43 games.

Another loan move away from Selhurst Park didn't materialise for the former Charlton fan favourite this summer, but Norwich were reportedly interested then and could revive their interest this month especially if Rowe ups and leaves for pastures new.

3 Dexter Lembikisa

Norwich could utilise the loan market once more by signing Dexter Lembikisa this month, the current Rotherham United loanee a wanted man according to TEAMTalk with Middlesbrough and Ipswich Town also wanting to sign the young full-back alongside the Canaries.

Supporters of Norwich know all too well what Lembikisa is capable of, the Wolverhampton Wanderers youngster turned crucial Millers first-teamer scoring a sensational first-time strike against Wagner's men earlier in the season.

The Canaries could well want to turn back the clock and sign a full-back reminiscent of Max Aarons in Lembikisa, pushing the likes of Jack Stacey all the way currently at Carrow Road to a starting spot if purchased.

Wagner knows that he will have to get his recruitment spot on this month to improve his side and get more wins on the board, or he could finally be put out of his misery and fired from his precarious job post.

The Premier League title race is heading towards an exciting climax as Arsenal and Manchester City go for glory. Tottenham could have a big say in where the trophy ends up as they are set to take on Pep Guardiola's side on Tuesday. Victory for Spurs could effectively hand their north London rivals a first league title since 2004, but Postecoglou has insisted his team won't roll over against the defending champions.

He told reporters: "I’m here fighting tooth and nail every single day for everything I can get for this football club because that’s my responsibility. I would not give up on any cause even the most lost of causes because then I’d be abstaining from my responsibilities. I want us to finish the season strong. I want us to try and win three games of football and see where that takes us.”

Tottenham are set to play Burnley on Saturday before they host City and Postecoglou insisted his side haven't given up on the season despite suffering four defeats on the bounce. He added: "That’s a harsh term, give up. What does that mean I come in here at 12 o’clock, have a latte, go home and just let the guys train? I don’t give up on anything."

Talking Points – Bumrah swings see-saw game Mumbai's way

In a game where the run-rate hovered around nine, Jasprit Bumrah’s last three overs went for just eight runs

Dasgupta: De Villiers has multiple options for type of delivery

Bumrah’s last three overs: eight runs, three wicketsSeventy-five needed off 42 balls. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers at the crease. Kohli has just got to 5000 IPL runs and looks set to take RCB home. Despite their two most proven match-winners at the crease, ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster is refusing to favour the home side. Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malinga, between them, will bowl five of the seven remaining overs, that’s why.Bumrah comes in for the 14th over and keeps them to three off the first three balls. And then, against someone of Kohli’s class, he delivers a bouncer that pings off the splice of his bat. Boom. The world’s best batsman has been done for pace, and Forecaster has duly brought down RCB’s chances by about ten percentage points. Mumbai are firm favourites again.Strike one delivered, Rohit Sharma brings on Malinga for the 16th over to prize out de Villiers. Except, Malinga versus de Villiers in the IPL is a no-contest: 99 runs off 51 balls, not a single dismissal for the tournament’s most successful bowler. His slower balls have by now become too predictable, and de Villiers duly takes him for 20 runs.22 off 12. It’s all on Bumrah now. The protege has to deliver once again so the master can squeeze it out in the 20th over. An off-colour Colin de Grandhomme lets de Villiers do the hitting, except Bumrah’s radar is inch-perfect: yorker, bouncer, yorker. A Rohit Sharma direct hit got rid of Moeen Ali•BCCIChahal reaps the rewards for no-fear attitude
There’s no fear. Not even after Yuvraj Singh has walloped him for three sixes. For those two minutes, even the DJ at the Chinnaswamy Stadium seems lost. He urges the crowd to go “Aree-Ceee-Beee”, but they alternate between “Yuvi-Yuvi-Yuvi” and “we want six”. Now, the pressure is squarely on the bowler. Yuzvendra Chahal knows what’s coming, but is unfazed and goes wide of the crease to land a googly on a length outside off. It stops on him a touch but Yuvraj is through the shot and slices it off the outer part of the bat to long-off. Just when Mumbai seemed to have offset a slow middle period that had them score just 41 in the six overs after being 52 for none in the Powerplay, Chahal strikes. This modus operandi becomes a template for the rest of Chahal’s spell: the decision to not deliver anything in the batsman’s hitting arc. Off his next over, his fourth and final one of the night, he goes wide outside off again to Suryakumar Yadav. The first attempt results in a mistimed sweep. But off the next, he reaches out to go big, but it keeps drifting away and he skies a catch to the cover fielder. Three balls later, Kieron Pollard attempts to do what his colleagues have failed at. He looks to smack a sixth-stump length ball over long-off, and spoons a catch to sweeper cover. It’s worth mentioning that the might not have been had the umpire not wrongly called wide off the previous delivery, that deflected off Pollard’s pads. Even so, shouldn’t he have then seen off Chahal? The wicket made Chahal the first bowler to a four-for this season, three of which were to deliveries bowled outside off.ESPNcricinfo LtdWho’s going to bowl at the death for RCB?
Did Chahal’s burst in the 16th mask RCB’s death-overs struggle? They finished with the poorest returns in this period last season, and two games in – never mind the result – RCB still don’t look like they have a convincing combination to negotiate this period. You might look at the numbers and wonder what we are talking about: the last five on Thursday went for just 48, 15 off which came off the final over when Mohammad Siraj kept missing yorker-length deliveries to be clobbered by Hardik Pandya. But let’s look at the options: Colin de Grandhomme doesn’t have the pace, and on a re-laid Bengaluru track that doesn’t quite have the same bite or grip from the last two seasons, he’s at best a containing option in the middle overs. Navdeep Saini is just two IPL games old and Siraj’s death-overs economy over 11 games last season was 10.31. These two accounted for three of the last five. What of Umesh Yadav? His economy of 6.40 in the Powerplay was the best for any bowler in IPL 2018, and he’s brought Kohli wickets upfront. On fresh surfaces with some zip, he’s largely seen as a new-ball option. Will Nathan Coulter-Nile, set to join the squad on April 1, or Tim Southee – both of whom can also be new-ball options – add better balance? This could mean they leave out de Grandhomme, whom they could replace with Washington Sundar, an offspinner with a flat trajectory. This could give them an extra spin option on surfaces that could become slower as the season progresses.

The Rondo: GOAL USA roundtable on Gio Reyna, Gregg Berhalter and USMNT's pre-Copa America June camp roster

Our writers debate what the USMNT will – and should – look like during the June camp, the striker spot, Gio Reyna and more.

U.S. men's national team boss Gregg Berhalter on Monday released his preliminary Copa America roster for a pair of June friendlies against Brazil and Colombia, with 27 players called into camp in advance of what will eventually be a 26-man roster for this summer's marquee event.

But questions loom.

Who slots into the XI to replace an injured Sergino Dest? Does Berhalter need to tweak his tactics and formation without his star defender? What about out-of-form stars such as Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun?

And then there's the roster itself: were the right choices made, and has anyone been snubbed?

All valid questions, and our GOAL US writers weigh in with the latest edition of…

Getty Images Who is the biggest snub from the June camp roster?

Tom Hindle: To be fair, I think Berhalter has got this mostly right. He’s kept the big guns around, and although there’s no obvious Dest replacement, Scally is a decent – if underwhelming – shout.

If anyone can feel aggrieved, it’s Auston Trusty. A Premier League center back, with 30 plus starts this season – albeit for statistically the worst defense in history – he certainly knows how to play against the best.

Respect where it's due to Miles Robinson and Cameron Carter-Vickers, but Trusty should sneak in over one of those guys. Still, as major issues go, we’re talking about fourth-string center backs.

Ryan Tolmich: There are two players that immediately come to mind: Trusty and Lennard Maloney.

Both logged big minutes in top leagues, and neither had their names called for this squad. Of the two, Trusty's slight is the toughest. Maloney has more experienced players ahead of him, while Trusty is very much part of a big battle for a centerback spot. Unfortunately for him, he was Berhalter's sixth choice in a five-horse race despite playing the most games at the highest level in the competition.

Overall, though, it's splitting hairs. The USMNT's fate won't be determined by players 23-26, even if there is plenty of reason to debate those spots.

Jacob Schneider: Someone has to be the odd one out here: Trusty has not been snubbed. Though he's a talented defender, being a part of the worst defense in Premier League history essentially puts you in a hole. Maloney, meanwhile, should be upset that Timmy Tillman has been called up ahead of him.

And the name that we have not been talking about – don't quite understand why – is Alejandro Zendejas. He's been lights-out in Mexico for Club America, arguably the most storied and talented franchise across North America.

The U.S. winger pool is deep, but things are bleak in terms of right-wing depth. With 26 players on the roster, was there really not room for someone like Zendejas in the attack?

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFolarin Balogun, Josh Sargent, Ricardo Pepi: Who do you start at striker?

TH: None of them? All of them?

Ask nine months ago, and it’s Balogun, pretty much without doubt. The dude can put the ball in the net, and banged in 20-plus in Ligue 1. Farmer’s league jokes aside, average strikers don’t accidentally hit those kinds of numbers. Today? It gets a bit more complicated, especially after Balogun's middling season.

It feels like Pepi had his moment two years ago, and hasn’t delivered since. Not quite convinced he’s all that – at least not yet. Form suggests that Sargent is the right choice, but he never made it happen in the Prem, either. On balance, you probably go with the guy who can do it at the highest level.

Pop Balogun up there, but I don’t think Sargent is too far behind.

JS: If Sargent is healthy, he's the pick. He's long been the most naturally talented striker in the U.S. pool. He has excelled in all situations for Norwich City this year, and at one point, had the most headed goals across the top-two divisions in England – even more than Erling Haaland.

Then again, you don't just casually score 20+ goals in Ligue 1. Balogun is a sensational striker, but his form is woeful, and he's lacking confidence.

Pepi is better suited to represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympic Games this summer. However, for Copa America, he will be able to provide an electric presence off the bench.

Berhalter should start the forward who can bag goals at the moment, and that's Sargent.

RT: It's conditional, isn't it?

It feels like it's between Balogun and Sargent, but the answer could be both. Sargent could be the guy against Bolivia and Panama, inferior teams that bunker down. Balogun could be the guy against Uruguay and some of the late-tournament heavy-hitters due to his pace and intelligence in making runs.

All of this depends on Sargent's health. If he's healthy, a split of the two is best for business.

Getty ImagesWithout Dest available, should Berhalter tweak his system?

TH: In theory, sure. In practice, probably not. Dest is a very good attacking full back, who has proved that he can deliver for the USMNT.

Yet he's not such a major loss that Berhalter – a manager so tactically inflexible it physically hurts – has to tear the whole thing apart. Injuries are always going to be a problem for national teams. And you can see why changes need to be made to account for missing superstars. France would have to change without Mbappe, Argentina without Messi, etc.

Not quite convinced that a pretty good full back doing his knee is worth scrapping your system. Then again, it might be fun for the manager to try something new – for once.

JS: If Joe Scally isn't your man, yes, change the system. If he is, no.

There's only one reason you'd tweak anything, and it would be to move Tim Weah to RWB in a back-five system with Antonee Robinson opposite.

It sure as hell would be fun to see, but the point of those two matches against Brazil and Colombia isn't to test things out. It's to nail everything down. The testing window was March, and that time has passed.

That said, the U.S. should tweak their front-three to move Christian Pulisic to the right side of the pitch if they do opt for a back-five. He has excelled there for Milan, and Haji Wright has more than earned a chance to start on the left with him.

RT: They're going to have to adjust, in some ways. No player can do what Dest does, which is going to change how the U.S. approaches the right-hand side. Weah's job is made easier by Dest's attacking skills and, without that, it'll all look different.
But a big formation tweak? Probably not. Berhalter has his ideas and style and, even without Dest, this is a team suited to them. No need to reinvent the wheel for one player, even if that wheel could use a bit of adjusting.

Getty ImagesWhich player needs the June camp most to impress?

TH: The logical answer here is Brendan Aaronson. A couple of years ago, it seemed he might be a crucial part of this team through 2026 and beyond.

This next month figures to be a good opportunity for him to get back on track, and show that he can compete for minutes among a squad that has approximately 56 attacking midfielders and no real wingers. But he’s probably not getting in this team.

Realistically, then, it’ll be Gio Reyna.

He didn’t get a kick at Forest, and he’s quite comfortably the most talented footballer Berhalter has at his disposal. He’s not going to be dropped altogether, but Reyna has to show he is at least sharp enough to earn a spot.

JS: There's two obvious answers: Matt Turner and Scally. The Nottingham Forest goalkeeper may truly be getting his last hoorah as the starting shotstopper at Copa America. He lost his starting spot at the club level, lost the support of their fans, and isn't even a consensus starter for the national team. With the likes of Patrick Schulte, Gaga Slonina and Diego Kochen all on the rise, Turner needs this June to cement his status.

Scally, meanwhile, has more expectations than anyone else in this camp. The assumption is he will start at right-back in place of the injured Dest, and as such, he has shoes unlike any other to fill. The Gladbach defender had a rough moment in the March international window against Jamaica, and was arguably slammed too much for it. However, it was a much-needed learning moment for the 21-year-old.

For someone who started 25 of 31 Bundesliga games for his club this season, he sure gets a lot of stick from USMNT fans. This June is his chance to respond.

RT: There's a clear answer here, and that's Scally. With Dest gone, Scally is next up and, thus far, hasn't shown he's ready. Scally is yet to have a true breakout USMNT performance, partly because his chances have been somewhat spread out.

He'll get his opportunity this summer and, if he seizes it, who knows what happens after the Copa? First, he'll need to prove that he's up for the challenge by performing against Colombia and Brazil. If he does that, he could earn Berhalter's trust and prevent any of the big tactical tweaks mentioned above.

Berhalter can also use Weston McKennie or Weah as a right-back but, the US will be better if Scally makes it so he doesn't have to.

Liverpool could unleash Salah in permanent new role with swoop for £60m ace

The January transfer window is well underway and Liverpool have the opportunity to add to their playing squad if they decide they need to bolster their ranks.

However, the Reds could also decide to wait until the summer to do their business if they feel that better deals, and players, will be available to them.

One player who has been linked with a possible move to Anfield is Barcelona forward Raphinha, who was reported to be of interest to the club in November 2023 ahead of the January window.

Barcelona star Raphinha.

That same month, FootballTransfers claimed that Spurs are keen on a deal to sign the former Leeds United star, who has been valued at €70m (£60m) by the Spanish side.

Jurgen Klopp could free up Reds superstar Mohamed Salah to play in a permanent new role as a centre-forward by securing a deal to sign winger Raphinha.

Mo Salah's goal record as a striker

The 31-year-old sensation has only started 34 matches as a striker in his Liverpool career and plundered 28 goals and seven assists in those outings.

This means that Salah has averaged a goal or an assist every 0.97 games across those 34 appearances as a centre-forward, away from his usual position on the right flank.

Mohamed Salah.

Whereas, the former Chelsea prospect has racked up 176 goals and 80 assists in 294 matches as a right-winger for Liverpool. This is an average of a goal or an assist every 1.15 games.

Of course, there is no guarantee that Salah would be able to replicate his aforementioned form as a striker over the course of an entire season, but it does show that he has the potential to be very effective there.

The stats that show why Raphinha could dominate alongside Salah

Klopp could free up the Egypt international to play down the middle on a regular basis by bringing in Raphinha to line up on the right flank.

The Brazil international is a talented right-sided forward who has the ability to score and create goals at an impressive rate, as shown by his form in LaLiga and the Premier League during his career.

Since his move to Barcelona at the start of last season, Raphinha has racked up ten goals, 12 assists, and 23 'big chances' created in 33 LaLiga starts.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed magician has already proven his quality as a scorer and creator of goals in English football for the Yorkshire-based side.

Raphinha, who AllLeedsTV presenter Oscar Marrio once described as “unplayable”, chipped in with 11 goals and ten 'big chances' created in 35 Premier League games during his final season at Leeds. That is a goal or a 'big chance' created every 1.66 games on average.

Whereas, current Liverpool winger Luis Diaz – who plays on the left flank – has produced three goals and one 'big chance' created in 19 top-flight appearances this term, which is an average of one every 4.75 outings.

This illustrates the step-up in quality that Raphinha could provide with his attacking quality in the final third, which would also allow Salah to be a lethal number nine for the Reds moving forward – latching on to the Brazilian ace's terrific passes and crosses to find the back of the net.

'If the situation arises, Russell will bat higher' – Kallis

The KKR coach said that while the team was frustrated after losing five matches in a row, they know they aren’t out of the qualifications race yet

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Apr-2019In the aftermath of their fifth consecutive defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad, a part of which could be attributed to Andre Russell’s under utilisation with the bat, Kolkata Knight Riders coach Jacques Kallis admitted they could have done things differently, and will consider doing so in the future should the situation call for it.Batting first, Knight Riders had gotten off to a flying start before losing four wickets in a flurry, but it was Rinku Singh who came out to bat in the ninth over at No.6, with Russell only getting a hit when a little more than four overs were left. While Russell had said that a move higher up the order might benefit the team, captain Dinesh Karthik later quashed the suggestion that the allrounder was unhappy with his batting position, asserting that ‘he has a clear role in the team which he’s trying to achieve every time he goes out to bat’.Kallis had a different take on the subject. “Rinku went in in the eighth over and we certainly haven’t sent Andre in that early, in hindsight we could sent him a bit earlier,” he said at the Eden Gardens on Tuesday.”It certainly hadn’t been one of our plans but if the situation arises then it’s something we’ll think of. It’s a matter of what the team needs in such a situation and what the captain and management come up with, and we feel where each player is suited to play. But like I said, if a situation arises where Andre or someone else can come up the order, we’ve got to perhaps try one or two things a little differently.”Despite Russell’s devastating form – he has 392 runs at an average of 65.33 and a strike rate of 217.77 – Knight Riders have now slipped to sixth in the points table after the loss against Sunrisers. The team had a four-day break between that game and their next one, against Rajasthan Royals at home, and they’ve used the break to give players some downtime. The aim is to get the team refreshed and ready to turn their season around. During the break, a few players – including captain Dinesh Karthik and Robin Uthappa – travelled to Mumbai to get in some extra practice sessions.”We felt that the guys needed a break. They were given the freedom to do what they want for the next couple of days,” Kallis said. “It has been a disappointing couple of games for us, so we thought that guys can go away and do what they want. They could go home if they wanted to, and some guys felt they wanted to get a little practice which they couldn’t get here, so they went to Mumbai. Our practices here are optional, so it’s just about getting guys refreshed and mentally up for the game.”I think they are frustrated, but I wouldn’t say they are negative,” Kallis said of the mood in the team. “They do realise we’ve still got a chance of qualifying. We’ve just got to play some good cricket. I’ve said all along that in this format, it’s the little percentages you need to improve to turn things around and we’re not far off. We just need to do the little things a little bit better.”Kallis pointed to the team’s inability to take wickets upfront as one of the major reason for the string of losses. On a sluggish surface in Hyderabad, Knight Riders were unable to pose a challenge with the ball, as Sunrisers romped home to their target of 161 with nine wickets and five overs to spare. In the match before that, they conceded 213 against Royal Challengers. Overall, Knight Riders have taken only 35 wickets this season, the least among all teams, coupled with the worst economy rate of 9.04 runs an over.”The frustrating part of this season has been not taking wickets and if you don’t take wickets upfront you are under pressure for the whole innings,” Kallis said.”I think we’ve probably taken 20-21 wickets in ten games, which has put us under a lot of pressure. Yes, your bowling unit is going to be under pressure, you can’t quite be as attacking, you almost have to be defensive when there are wickets in hand. So yeah, the key for us is taking more wickets upfront, and making life a little easier in the middle and end period.”

Manchester United pulled off a surprise win over Manchester City in the FA Cup final on Sunday with a spectacular performance at Wembley Stadium. Scholes has heaped praise on youngster Kobbie Mainoo and under-pressure midfielder Sofyan Amrabat after the game, as he compared the Moroccan with legendary midfielder Gennaro Gattuso after a Herculean performance against Man City.

On Instagram, Scholes praised Mainoo and said: "Read a few comparisons between me and this kid last week…don't waste your time, he is 10 times the player I was at 19…just love the way he receives the ball, the calmness, the awareness of what's around him and of course big goals in big games…this boy is special…and he's a f*cking Red…laters"

Smith, Warner ready to 'face the fire' on Australia comebacks – Langer

Australia coach delighted to have Steven Smith and David Warner back ahead of World Cup and Ashes in England

Melinda Farrell18-May-2019As Australia commenced their World Cup preparations on English soil, coach Justin Langer admitted the personal welfare of Steven Smith and David Warner would require sensitive monitoring and handling over the coming months. The two players joined in the centre wicket practice at Whitgift School, in the suburbs of south London, with a small media contingent and a few dozen fans, mainly children in whites, sat on the grassy banks. It was a quiet and even genteel start to a gruelling four-month tour that will incorporate World Cup and Ashes campaigns and Langer knows more hostile crowds and greater scrutiny will greet Smith and Warner now they have served the bans handed to them in the wake of last year’s Cape Town ball tampering affair.”Well we can’t control the crowd,” Langer said. “What I do know? It may ramp up, it may heat up, but it won’t be any hotter than it was 12 months ago. I’ve never seen anything like it so the boys are very well prepared. They’ve paid a heavy price and we’re expecting always to come here and to face the fire and we’re ready for that.”What we’ve got to understand is that they’re human beings as well. There’s not too many I’ve met in my life who like being booed or heckled or disliked so… they’re human beings. We’re going to have to care for them, we’re going to have to put an arm around them and make sure they’re going okay. But what people say, whether it’s in the crowd or social media or wherever, there’s nothing they can do about that, they can’t control it but what we can do is keep an eye on them and make sure they’re going okay as people as much as cricketers.”ALSO READ: Finch ponders tactics to counter run-festsSteven Smith bats during Australia training•Cricket NetworkAside from the expected questions from the media there was little evidence of any lasting effects of a turbulent 12-month period, punctuated by severe recriminations and introspection throughout Australian professional cricket. But Langer suggested both players have shown an understandable eagerness to finally put their exile behind them, from their return to the squad for warm-ups against New Zealand to the squad’s visit to the World War One battlefields of Gallipoli, where they broke their journey to England.”Dave’s got that look on his eye, he’s really hungry, he’s a great player as we all know, he’s so dynamic, he brings so much energy, and that’s what we ask from our players, Langer said. “You watch Glenn Maxwell field or bowl or bat – he brings the energy. Dave Warner always brings energy to the contest. It’s really nice to have him back.””I watched Steve Smith batting against New Zealand in those three practice games, he’s literally a master of the game, so it’s nice to have him back. It’s been hilarious for me because whether on the ANZAC cove or in the lunch room or we’re in the bus playing cards, he’s just shadow batting the whole time. He’s literally – he loves batting, he’s shadow batting on the sand, he’s shadow batting in the shower – I’m not joking. You should see him, he just loves batting. From that point it’s great to have him back.”From a broader perspective, it’s nice to have them back as well, they’ve had 12 months to have a good think about a mistake they and the team made. I’m sure they’ll be better people for that.”Aside from his surprising knowledge of Smith’s daily ablutions, Langer believes both players are physically ready as they continue to progress from elbow surgeries earlier this year, although he admitted they are still at partially restricted in the field.”They both fielded in the three [World Cup warm-up] games against New Zealand. Steve’s in literally career best shape. I mean you just saw a 2K time trial, he’s in great shape and Dave Warner is always elite fit. So in terms of their throwing, they’re building it up. Where they’ve come from, from surgery, I’m really proud of them and they’re up and running. Are they going to throw like Andrew Symonds or Ricky Ponting? Probably not at the moment but they’re certainly working towards that.”Last week in Brisbane, [Smith] batted beautifully, he played an unbelievable shot off Nathan Coulter-Nile there – it was like watching Sachin [Tendulkar] bat. He’s in pretty good shape I think.”Steven Smith, Justin Langer and David Warner during the Australia World Cup squad’s trip to Gallipoli•Cricket AustraliaOf greater concern to Langer is the task of getting his side prepared for their first World Cup match against Afghanistan in Bristol, the reason for their match scenario practice, which saw bowlers asked to simulate specific stages of an innings. After a difficult home summer, Australia embarked on an eight-match winning streak in India and Pakistan and they now have two warm-up games in England to settle on a starting side. The main selection questions centre on how to fit Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja and Warner into the top three while Coulter-Nile appears to be favoured as the third seamer in an attack also featuring Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins. The coaching staff will be bolstered by World Cup winners Ponting and Brad Haddin and, while England’s batting has dominated the local cricket headlines, Langer is adamant that Australia won’t be drawn in to changing their tactics.”We’ve been hearing it for 12 months. We’ve shown if we stick to the formula then we’ll have some success. It’s as simple as that. And when it comes to playing India and England it’s just like match play, we’re just going to have to compete harder and be ready for them. In terms of scores, a lot will have to do with the grounds we play on, the conditions, whether we’re chasing or setting, all those sorts of things but we’re really clear on the game plan. We showed in India and Dubai that, if we stick to it, we’ll score big enough scores to win games of cricket.”We love our cricket and we’ve been good at it. When everyone says we’ve got to start playing like England or start playing like New Zealand or start playing like India, no – we’ll keep playing like Australia because we’ve won four of the past five World Cups and that’s something to be proud of.”The boys are aware of it and we know if we stick to the Australian way of playing great cricket… history has shown we’ll be pretty good.”

Journalist says underrated Arsenal target now wants Edu to bid for him

It is believed an "underrated" Arsenal target actually would like the club to make a transfer bid for him as sporting director Edu continues his work this month.

Edu looking for January signings at Arsenal

Previous reports have suggested that manager Mikel Arteta would ideally like two new full-backs, a centre midfielder and a striker (Miguel Delaney), but certain roadblocks make strengthening all four positions near impossible this month.

Arsenal plotting official bid for £100k-p/w star who's "charmed" Arteta

The Spaniard is a big admirer.

Arsenal spent north of £200 million last summer, which has somewhat limited their budget, and Financial Fair Play regulations mean they may have to be careful about how much they spend in January.

That being said, that hasn't stopped Edu from attempting to reinforce at least a couple of key areas. Indeed, there have been claims that Arsenal have opened talks to sign Everton midfielder Amadou Onana this month, with the Belgian apparently keen to join them.

Reliable transfer source Fabrizio Romano, speaking to Kick last week, also stated that Arsenal signing a new full-back is certainly a possibility.

“A new full-back for Arsenal? Yes it is a possibility, it is a possibility for Arsenal to bring in a new full-back in January," said Romano this week.

"They have to see what opportunity they can find, if it’s a loan deal, but Arsenal are exploring options in that position, they are in the full-backs market, I can confirm that, there is a possibility, there is a chance, we will have to see, but I think it’s a possibility."

Despite some limitations, Arsenal could still see some new faces make the move to north London. In terms of their chances of signing a new striker, one player who continues to attract attention is Brentford star Ivan Toney.

The England international, who is set to return from his ban for alleged gambling breaches this month, scored 20 league goals last season and has been heavily linked over the last few months.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank poured cold water on the possibility of Toney leaving before January 31, unless they were handed an unbelievable offer. The Dane refused to clarify what he defined as an irresistible bid for his man, and given the nature of the transfer window, you cannot rule anything out.

Toney would welcome Arsenal move to sign him

According to CBS journalist Ben Jacobs, speaking on The Done Deal Show, relayed by TBR Football, Toney would welcome an Arsenal bid to sign him over Chelsea.

"My understanding remains that yes Toney would welcome a move from Arsenal, more so than Chelsea, and for Chelsea he’s not necessarily top of the list," said Jacobs.

The desire of the player to join Arsenal is certainly there, and that may help in Edu's possible attempt to bring him to the Emirates Stadium – either this month or later in the year.

The 27-year-old, even before his excellent 2022/2023 campaign, was starring at Brentford with journalist Dean Jones calling him a largely "underrated" player.

Houghton weights up next chapterEx-England captain now retiredCoaching qualifications in progressWHAT HAPPENED?

Playing her final game for Manchester City on the last day of the 2023-24 WSL season, Houghton is weighing up her next move. She completed part of her coaching qualifications towards the end of 2023, something which seemingly accelerated hanging up her boots. However, the 36-year-old isn't sure if she's quite ready to dive into coaching with both feet.

Houghton said, via : "I completed my B licence over Christmas and I think that was probably part of my decision to retire. I enjoyed being on the grass and giving something in a different way. All the girls have been asking, 'Are you coming back to give the team talks?' I've said, 'No girls, I've done my ten years of that'.

"I think I would have attributes to go down the coaching route but when I was doing 9am-7pm at St George's Park every day I was thinking, 'I don't know if I'm down for this'.

"I like to learn. I like to try something new, so for me it's just about having an open mind to try and wanting to progress in a different area and try different things really."

Houghton has only just stopped playing after a 22-year career that began when she made her first-team debut for Sunderland at the age of just 14 in 2002. As a result, a new-found freedom that she has never known could delay the next chapter.

"I'm actually most looking forward to the simple things. Sunday dinner, seeing my nephews grow up, spending time with family. Just being able to take ownership and having a little bit more freedom, to be honest," she explained.

In the short-term, Houghton could entertain more media work, having combined the later years of her playing career with ad-hoc punditry gigs. As for Manchester City, their defence is in need of fresh blood ahead of next season after also bidding farewell to long-serving left-back Demi Stokes and the versatile Esme Morgan.
