Why Gareth Bale is caught between two stalls with dream move

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has attracted widespread interest from some of the top clubs in Europe over the course of the past 18 months, with Barcelona and Real Madrid prime among them, but just how realistic is a move to one of Spain’s big two?

The main stumbling block to any deal to one of La Liga’s hegemonic duo is the price above all else. When you look at his value to Andre Villas-Boas and how integral he is to the squad, the price of around £40m often mentioned seems around the right mark. The club have no pressing need to sell and having just sold Luka Modric to Real Madrid for north of £30m, nor will they want to start repeating the trap that Arsenal have fallen into the last few years of selling your best player each summer – a vicious cycle if ever there was one.

It’s clear that the money floating around the Camp Nou isn’t quite as rich as it once was, and if Tito Vilanova were to sanction a move for Bale around the €40m (£32m) mark, still significantly less than what Tottenham would deem an acceptable price for their man, then they would be blowing the vast majority of their transfer budget on one player, something that they will be loathe to do.

You also have to ask yourself, where exactly would he fit in to this current Barcelona side? The club’s acquisition of Spain left-back Jordi Alba from Valencia in the summer for the modest amount of €14m (£11m) on the face of it would appear to end any need for the club to pursue Bale in the future and he may have missed his chance.

Alba came through the ranks at La Masia before leaving the club after failing to break through into the first-team, finding his success elsewhere first like both Cesc Fabregas and Gerard Pique before him; a continuation of a fairly expensive transfer policy of bringing former players back to the club.

However, his success this term can be directly attributed to how familiar he is with the style and methods of the club so ingrained into their younger players and at just 23 years of age, he’s a long-term purchase. This means that the previously assumed role at left-back as Eric Abidal’s successor is no longer available, so would he fit in further up field?

Bale has shown that he can be effective drifting in off the flank at times, but far too often this has a more detrimental impact on the balance and overall threat of the rest of the side. He has displayed the ability to play quick one-touch football through the middle, with his goal away at Manchester City last term a testament to that, but it’s clearly not his natural game.

No, the Welshman is at his best when running onto a ball at pace or driving into the space in front of him. The possession-based game that Barcelona play means that the only position he’d be able to do that from is as an attacking full-back, and unless he actually bothers to develop a right foot any time soon that he can use consistently enough, I simply don’t see that happening, even if question marks remain over Daniel Alves’ future at the club beyond the end of this season.

Alexis Sanchez has at times struggled with the little space he receives closed in around the box and his natural game has been restricted somewhat and you could see Bale suffering in the same way in a more advanced role. He doesn’t possess the skill to beat a player at close quarters that a Cristiano Ronaldo or Luis Suarez does. Moreover, the likes of Christian Tello, Isaac Cuenca, Pedro and the exciting and emerging talent of Gerard Deulofeu would mark Bale’s purchase as a needless indulgence in an area where they are well stocked, with buying a recognised centre-half, rather than a versatile holding man capable of filling in seemingly a much more immediate and higher priority.

Speaking of Cristiano Ronaldo, he is the player which Bale is often compared to and he has developed that arrogant swagger in recent times. The 23-year-old has shown a worrying lack of work-rate in tracking back to help out his defender this season, almost as if he views it as beneath him and it’s no coincidence that both Manchester City and Arsenal absolutely tore Tottenham’s left flank apart in recent games. Off the ball, he is not only positionally naive and tactically unaware, it has got to the point where that area of the pitch is being targeted and it’s costing them in important games; for an arch pragmatist such as Jose Mourinho, you suspect that might be something of a problem looking further ahead.

As part of Luka Modric’s £33m move to join Real Madrid this summer, the two clubs signed a ‘commercial partnership’ deal, with Tottenham set to reap the benefits from this transfer long after the Croat has retired from the game, but part of that arrangement had many suspicious about what Tottenham may have given away to secure that lucrative relationship, with a first option on Bale the rumoured benefit for the Spanish giants.

When you look at the Real Madrid squad, they play a much more expansive, counter-attacking style of play than Barcelona, which would seem to suit Bale down to the ground a lot more and you could imagine him in a more advanced role on the left wing at the Bernabeu, particularly with Angel Di Maria continuing to frustrate and excite with almost crushing regularity, and his inconsistency could see Mourinho look elsewhere.

They seem pretty well set at left-back, with the excellent Marcelo and disappointing Fabio Coentrao left to battle it out for a starting spot, but despite the Portuguese international’s struggles since moving from Benfica, the club parted with €30m (£24m) just last summer, so for Mourinho to give up on him now before he has truly shown his best form would represent something of an embarrassing climb down and confession of a flawed transfer; a move which he is unlikely to sanction at the risk of handing the critical Spanish press more ammunition.

There’s no denying that Bale would not sit comfortably in both of these sides, for he has occasionally shown the form and standard required, even if he looks incapable of doing it for prolonged spells at the moment. Aside from him not being quite ready to make the step up in my eyes, I just can’t see either club wanting to part with a fee of around £40m for someone neither of them realistically need to still compete at the highest level. You have to ask yourself, would he improve either side that much to warrant such an outlay?

The artificial inflation of British players means he could be priced out of any future move and while he may desire to move elsewhere further down the line in the pursuit of silverware, a move to either Manchester club would make much more sense. At the moment he is worth £40m to Tottenham but someway short of that for the Spanish pair, and bridging that divide remains the biggest stumbling block of all.

Celtic: Pete O’Rourke makes Reo Hatate claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke believes it will be difficult for Celtic to keep hold of Reo Hatate in the future, GiveMeSport report.

The Lowdown: Hatate helps Hoops pull clear

Hatate was one of five January additions at Parkhead and has since contributed to five Premiership goals in 492 minutes of action.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-22/” title=”Celtic updates!!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 24-year-old has helped Celtic go on an impressive winning run following the winter break, with seven victories on the spin seeing the Hoops go three points clear ahead of rivals Rangers.

Labelled as ‘amazing’ by Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, Hatate has caught the eye in Scotland, with pundit Gabby Agbonlahor believing his value has already tripled.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke was talking to GiveMeSport regarding the midfielder’s long-term future in Glasgow. He admitted it would be ‘difficult’ for the Hoops to keep hold of Hatate due to the possible money on offer in the Premier League.

“It’s going to be difficult for Celtic to keep hold of Hatate going forward if he keeps making the impact that he is.

“And as I mentioned earlier, Celtic and Rangers can’t compete with the money that’s on offer from clubs down in England as well.”

The Verdict: No surprise

It doesn’t exactly come as a shock that Hatate is already being linked with a move away following his impressive start, and O’Rourke’s comments are a potential worry in the long run.

However, Celtic officials are under no pressure to sell with Hatate contracted at Parkhead until 2026 following his £1.38m transfer.

Hopefully, Hatate will continue his fine form in Scotland, and even though that may result in his future being discussed even further, the Hoops may well reap the rewards with success on the pitch, starting with a possible Premiership triumph.

Journalist makes ‘£2.3 billion’ claim involving Spurs

Taking to Twitter, journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke of The Athletic has dropped a Tottenham Hotspur revelation as he makes a ‘£2.3 billion’ claim.

The Lowdown: ENIC protests…

Tottenham fans and the club’s board have endured a turbulent relationship with protests having been held over the Lilywhites’ ownership in recent times.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This has lead to rumours of potential buyers and questions surrounding whether chairman Daniel Levy or the ENIC Group would even consider selling the club (The Athletic).

Levy has played host to potential investors over this past year, including Singaporean entrepreneur Forrest Li back in December, who was an esteemed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium guest.

While a potential takeover doesn’t appear close for the time being, Pitt-Brooke has now claimed one American tycoon in Todd Boehly came pretty close in 2019.

The Latest: Pitt-Brooke makes claim…

Pitt-Brooke, making an interesting claim on Twitter, says Chelsea’s prospective buyer was actually nearing a purchase of Spurs for around ‘£2.3 billion’ at the time.

“Todd Boehly got close to buying Tottenham for roughly £2.3bn in 2019,” he explained.

The Athletic reporter also goes on to reveal ‘more on that’ offer in a recent article.

The Verdict: Interesting claim…

As Boehly joins the list of parties interested in buying Chelsea, with Roman Abramovich having put the club up for sale, his background comes as a mixed bag.

Owning 20 per cent of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Eldridge Industries’ CEO has come under scrutiny for some of his dealings, with his business model even likened to The Glazers of Man United.

Man City re-join Fabian Ruiz race

Speaking to Canale 8, as transcribed by Sport Witness and Tutto Napoli, journalist Antonio Giordano of Corriere dello Sport has shared a Manchester City transfer update involving old flame Fabian Ruiz.

The Lowdown: Sky Blue old familiar…

City fans will remember the Napoli midfielder being linked with a move to Eastlands as far back as two years ago.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-2/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, according to reports at the time, Pep Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain were very keen on signing Ruiz with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis going on to issue his exact demands to the press.

As City eyed both the Spaniard and colossal defender Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli in 2020, De Laurentiis openly stated he would only consider selling either of his star assets for €100 million (£83m).

Nearly 24 months on, with the player’s deal running out in 2023, it now appears the Serie A side will let Ruiz go for much less as reports suggest Napoli now value him at around £16m.

As his price drops by a whopping £67m, City and Guardiola are allegedly back in the frame.

The Latest: Giordano shares news…

As per Italian reporter Giordano (via SW), Guardiola is personally eyeing Ruiz again alongside the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Newcastle and Arsenal.

He also says that an ‘inevitable’ auction will be triggered for the Spain international ‘in two months’ as Ruiz enters the final year of his Napoli contract.

The Verdict: Time to pounce?

City’s depth, particularly in midfield, is nothing short of extraordinary with Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne all able to play either side of Fernandinho or Rodri in the middle of the park.

This isn’t even counting central-midfield youngsters like James McAtee who have emerged from City’s academy ranks recently with huge promise.

This begs the question – is it really worth the selection headache for Guardiola? Especially when top targets like Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland are arguably the major priority right now.

Despite Ruiz’ plaudits, with former Premier League striker Emile Heskey calling him ‘phenomenal’, we believe Guardiola is better placed prioritising a forward.

Tony Weston could save Rangers millions

Rangers bolstered their first-team squad in the January transfer window by completing a number of deals in an attempt to improve Gio van Bronckhorst’s Ibrox squad.

Ross Wilson dipped into his transfer war chest to secure loans for Amad Diallo, Aaron Ramsey and James Sands, whilst striking permanent moves for John Souttar and Mateusz Zukowski, with the former set to officially join in the summer.

Bringing a player in from another club is one way to add further options to the squad. and another is unearthing a gem from the academy to make the breakthrough at senior level.

Save millions

One Rangers B team player who may be ready to make such a step up is 18-year-old Tony Weston, who has been in phenomenal form for the youth teams.

The Gers signed the striker from English club Blackpool in 2020, where he had made his senior debut in the FA Cup.

His ex-Tangerines manager Simon Grayson previously heaped praise on him, saying: “He’s got so much enthusiasm. The lads were watching what he was doing, where his pure enthusiasm and love of being a professional footballer is at the front of his mind.

“He’s got 30-year-old lads behind him in the warm-up and I’ve never known a 16-year-old lead with stuff like that. He’s got confidence in his ability and it’s great for him.”

Since arriving at Ibrox, Weston has been in sensational goalscoring form. He was dubbed “clinical” by Gers coach Steven Smith and his record backs that up, with five goals in nine cup matches and 21 goals in the Scottish Lowland League for the B team.

This means that the 18-year-old has 26 goals in all competitions at youth level, suggesting that he is now knocking on the door of the first team. His record is sublime for the academy side and he will surely be grabbing Van Bronckhorst’s attention with his prolific scoring return.

The Dutch head coach must now offer him a chance in the senior team, whether that is before the end of the current campaign or in the summer for pre-season ahead of 2022/23. If Weston can make the step up, and his terrific tally of goals suggests that he can, then he would save Ross Wilson millions.

Rangers would not need to go into the transfer market to sign a striker if the teenage starlet proves himself as a genuine first-team option, and that is why he must be handed the opportunity to show what he can do at Ibrox. They would stop the club from needing to splash out seven-figure fees on a new striker, instead being able to invest that money on another area of the squad.

Southampton: Lyanco out of Man City clash

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has been dealt a setback for today’s FA Cup quarter-final clash against Manchester City as injury news emerges.

The Lowdown: Saints looking to bounce back…

Following an impressive five-game unbeaten run in the Premier League stretching from late January to late February, the Saints and Hasenhuttl have been brought back down to earth after three consecutive top-flight losses (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/southampton-latest-developments/” title=”Southampton latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Defeats away to Aston Villa and at home to Newcastle and Watford haven’t exactly got Southampton off to a great start this month, but those results could be swiftly forgotten if they pull off an FA Cup upset today.

The Saints take on Premier League champions and current frontrunners Man City at St Mary’s as they look to build upon their impressive 3-1 win over West Ham in the last round.

While most of Hasenhuttl’s squad are now available for selection, the 54-year-old will be without defender Lyanco and goalkeeper Alex McCarty, with the former’s absence in particular coming as a setback.

The Latest: Hasenhuttl dealt Lyanco setback…

As relayed by Daily Echo reporter Alfie House, the Brazilian will miss today’s crunch encounter with Pep Guardiola’s side, with Lyanco having still not recovered from injury.

He tweeted: “#SaintsFC have only two players out for #MCFC, Alex McCarthy and Lyanco. Everyone else is in training and available for selection.”

The Verdict: Bad news

Hasenhuttl will want the 25-year-old back in action as soon as possible for the final Premier League run-in, mainly to boost his options in defence and provide more strength in depth.

Called an ‘incredible’ player by journalist Josh Stewart, Southampton’s manager has held no shortage of praise for Lyanco this term. Professing his ‘love’ for the defender recently, the Austrian also drew attention to the player’s character and how it fits perfectly at Southampton.

Clearly rated quite highly by those inside and outside St Mary’s, it appears that he still isn’t available, and Hasenhuttl won’t be pleased that he has to do without him again today.

Tottenham: Source makes Zaniolo claim

According to a report from Football Italia, Tottenham Hotspur could be among the possible destinations for AS Roma attacking midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo.

The lowdown: Mercurial talent

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence in Italy and is already a fully-fledged senior international.

Back when he was a teenager, Zaniolo was lauded for ‘incredible’ physical attributes following a 2-1 victory over FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League by none other than club legend Daniele De Rossi.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

On that night, the cultured midfielder put on a masterclass in the Stadio Olimpico, earning an 8.98 rating for a display containing two goals, two tackles and one interception (Whoscored).

The latest: Zaniolo ‘unhappy’

As per various Italian sources (via Football Italia) Zaniolo is believed to have been left ‘unhappy’ having been excluded from the recent Rome derby clash with Lazio. That snub has led the eight-cap star to ‘consider his future’ at the Serie A club.

This is apparently not the only time this month he has been left ’embittered’ by former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho, who also chose not to start the youngster when Roma played in his hometown against Spezia.

The report claims that either Spurs or Juventus could be the benefactors of any falling out as both remain attentive to the talented forward.

In fact, it’s stated that Fabio Paratici is a ‘huge admirer’ of the former Inter Milan youngster having attempted to take the starlet to Turin previously.

The latest: An expensive luxury?

Despite struggling with regular injury woes, this season the Italian youngster has scored four times and provided eight assists in 33 appearances across all competitions.

Predominantly a right-winger but capable of interchanging with various roles in the attack, the young dynamo has even been compared to Spurs favourite Paul Gascoigne by agent Claudio Vigorelli for his similar ‘physical qualities’, and would likely act as direct competition to January signing Dejan Kulusevski.

Valued at £29.70million and under contract in Italy until 2024 (Transfermarkt), signing Zaniolo would be an expensive venture for the summer transfer window, but he would add a brilliant fourth option behind Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Kulusevski.

Newcastle handed Fabian Schar injury boost

Newcastle United are back in Premier League action on Sunday with an away clash against Tottenham Hotspur.

Having lost their two previous league games against Chelsea and Everton, both away from home and with a 1-0 scoreline, the Toon will undoubtedly be hoping that they don’t make it a hat-trick of away defeats on the bounce against Antonio Conte’s side.

Heading into the showdown in north London, it seems as though the Magpies have been handed an injury boost which will surely be music to the ears of many Toon supporters.

What’s the news?

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of Sunday’s match, Howe was discussing the current fitness situation regarding defender Fabian Schar, who left the Switzerland squad early with an abductor injury during the recent international break.

He said: “Fabian Schar came back having not trained or played but we’ve had a couple of sessions with him so we think he’ll be fit.”

Having played the full 90 minutes in all but one of Newcastle’s league games since late November, it’s safe to say that Howe sees the Swiss international as a pivotal figure in his squad.

Also, to highlight how important a figure he is at the back for the Toon, the 30-year-old has won 71.4% of his tackles, the third-highest of any Newcastle player to make more than one tackle, also recording far more interceptions (60) than any of his team-mates.

Even from an attacking point of view, Schar has shown how useful he can be by scoring one goal and providing two assists in the current campaign.

Taking all this into account, it’ll definitely have a lot of Toon supporters buzzing if the Swiss colossus is indeed fit enough to start at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and able to maintain fitness for the remainder of the season.

However, with Spurs striker Harry Kane scoring seven goals and providing three assists in his past eight league appearances, Schar will certainly have a tough test on his hands trying to contain the England captain for 90 minutes if the Newcastle defender starts tomorrow.

Everton missed out on Lukas Nmecha

Everton’s financial issues could act them to move smart in the summer transfer window, and it’s quite likely that unless a number of key players are sold to raise funds, free agents and loan moves will be targeted.

While Rafa Benitez will certainly not go down in Everton history as anything more than a disastrous appointment, his successor Frank Lampard may need to follow in his footsteps from the Spaniard’s dealings in last summer’s transfer window, and control the club’s finances well.

Signings like Andros Townsend and Demerai Gray may not have been the kind of marquee, electrifying signings that fans would have been hoping for before the start of this season, but they have both got excellent re-sell values that will bring in good profit for the club, should they depart.

One free agent that the club almost secured a number of years ago was Lukas Nmecha, who at the time was contemplating whether or not to renew his contract at Manchester City.

This was back in 2017, former Everton director of football Steve Walsh planning to complete the deal according to reports, via Sports Illustrated – and should he have succeeded in persuading the German striker to make the move across the North West to Goodison Park, the Toffees would have reaped the rewards – evident by his recent form with current club Wolfsburg.

After signing a new deal in 2018 with City, the striker joined the Bundesliga outfit at the start of this season for £7.2m, and his performances have led to his valuation increasing to £16.2m according to Transfermarkt.

Described as a “baller” by German journalist Jasmina Schweimler, the 23-year-old has featured in 18 German top-flight games this season, starting 11 of them, and has netted six goals so far while operating more as a wide-man, earning his first four caps with his country.

He has also netted two Champions League goals with Wolfsburg – proving that he can perform on the big stage, having already proved his ability at international level, having scored 12 goals for Germany’s U21s, also winning the U21 Top Scorer award at last summer’s UEFA European U21 Championship – helping his country to win the trophy.

Among attacking midfielders and wingers in Europe’s top five leagues and continental competitions, Nmecha ranks in the top 5% for goals per 90 (0.51), top 4% for aerials won per 90 (2.21) and top 18% for pressures in the attacking third per 90 (7.01) – proving that he is becoming a more “complete” forward as he has been previously described by former teammate and City captain Vincent Kompany.

Rangers flop who “will always make 3 or 4 howlers” is becoming Barisic 2.0

The January transfer window is due to open for business next week and there are some big calls that will have to be made by Danny Rohl and the board at Glasgow Rangers.

Whilst there will be a lot of attention on who they bring in to bolster the squad, as new signings are always exciting, there should also be some focus on who they need to move on from the club.

One of the toughest parts of squad building is knowing when the right time to move a player on is. The Light Blues have suffered because they have failed to time departures right in the past, such as was the case with Borna Barisic.

Why Rangers let Borna Barisic go too late

The Croatia international spent six years at Ibrox as a left-back for the likes of Steven Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale, and Philippe Clement, making 236 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt.

In his last season with the Gers, though, the left-footed star’s performances regressed, and he was not the same player he once was at Ibrox.

After recording nine assists in 30 Scottish Premiership matches in the 2022/23 campaign, the summer of 2023 may have been the perfect time for the club to cash in on Barisic, as his contract only had 12 months left to run at that point.

Instead, they kept hold of the Croatian defender and, as you can see in the statistics above, his performances in and out of possession regressed in the 2023/24 campaign.

Barisic then left on a free transfer at the end of the season, as Clement opted to go in a new direction at left-back, and Rangers may have ended up regretting not letting go of him sooner.

The current Rangers star who is in danger of becoming the new Barisic

There is now a current Light Blues player who is in danger of becoming the new version of Barisic at Ibrox, as they have regressed on the pitch.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

In the summer transfer window, Rangers were reportedly interested in a deal to sign Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles, but they ended the window without adding a new goalkeeper to Russell Martin’s ranks.

That is a decision that they may now regret because first-choice goalkeeper Jack Butland has been far too error-prone in the 2025/26 campaign, and has regressed with each passing season in Glasgow.

The English shot-stopper was somehow beaten at his near post by Lawrence Shankland in the 2-1 loss to Hearts on Sunday, and it was his seventh error leading to a shot or goal already this season, per Sofascore.

After that loss, journalist Jonny McFarlane posted that “Butland, no matter how well he’s playing, will always make three or four howlers a season”, which has, unfortunately, been true since the start of the 2024/25 campaign.

That regression in his consistency clearly sounded some alarm bells inside Ibrox because they were then interested in a deal to sign Charles from Sheffield Wednesday, possibly to replace Butland.

However, Rangers opted to back their man by avoiding any new goalkeeper signings, and they have been punished for that support, as he has already made more errors than he did in the entirety of last season.

As was the case with Barisic, it seems like the Light Blues have held on to Butland a season too long, and there could be a decision for Rohl to make in January, as a new goalkeeper to challenge the Englishman could be needed.

£7m Rangers duo have been so poor they make Miovski & Chermiti look good

This £7m Rangers duo have been so underwhelming at Ibrox that they even make Bojan Miovski and Youssef Chermiti look good.
