Romano Issues Big Diallo Update At Man United

Manchester United wonderkid Amad Diallo is keen to succeed at Old Trafford, and is set to be given a chance in pre-season, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

What’s going on with Diallo and Man United?

The Ivorian winger has scored 13 times in 37 Championship games this season, and has helped Sunderland to a playoff place in what has been a productive loan spell.

The 20-year-old joined United for an initial £18m from Atalanta in 2021, and looks set to receive a chance to shine at the club in pre-season.

Speaking on his YouTube channel (4.30), Romano revealed Diallo’s desire to play at Man United, and the club’s plans for him once he returns from loan.

“The dream of the player, I can guarantee to you, is to stay at Man United. He loves Man United, he loves the club. He was living the dream by joining Manchester United, and he wants to stay there to have this opportunity, to have this chance,” he stated.

“So the idea of Erik ten Hag, is to have Amad Diallo in the pre-season, to test him in the pre-season, to see his progress, but the numbers are speaking for Amad Diallo, scoring goals and doing incredible things with Sunderland.

“During July a final decision will be made about him, but the idea is to give him a chance, the player wants to fight for his Manchester United opportunity.”

Could Diallo have a place at Man United next season?

Although United have spent a considerable amount on wingers Antony and Jadon Sancho in the last two years, their inconsistent performances have meant that if Diallo comes in and hits the ground running, he could earn himself a place in the side.

Diallo has predominantly played on the right for Sunderland, and could inject more goals into a side which lacks them. United’s top scorer behind Marcus Rashford is Bruno Fernandes, with six league strikes this season, and Sancho and Antony have just nine between them.

Pre-season could be the perfect opportunity for the 20-year-old to establish himself in the side, but if he fails to make an immediate impact, then a loan could be considered further down the line.

United have been linked with Harry Kane, given their need for a centre-forward, but if they fail to land the Englishman, Diallo could fill in through the middle as a squad option in the early stages of the season whilst the club assess the options in the transfer market.

Rashid feels he is winning the mental battle

Adil Rashid believes he is becoming a mentally stronger bowler after a year back in the England white-ball sides and continues to pick the brains of Shane Warne over the art of legspin

Adil Rashid believes he is becoming a mentally stronger bowler after a year back in England’s limited-overs sides and continues to pick the brains of Shane Warne over the art of legspin.Rashid has made an impressive start to the one-day series against Sri Lanka, conceding 70 runs from 20 overs in the opening two matches, to continue the positive impression he has created since being recalled at the beginning of last summer. He has played all of England’s white-ball matches since his return to the side.Against Sri Lanka at Trent Bridge and Edgbaston, he has twice bowled his 10 overs straight through, keeping the batsmen on a leash during the middle stage of the innings, and on Friday was rewarded with the wickets of Angelo Mathews and Seekkuge Prasanna. In the modern one-day game, Rashid knows there will be times when batsmen will get hold of him – as has happened on a few occasions since his return – but is learning how to handle the pressure on the international stage.”I’ve just got to look to keep improving day by day and game by game,” he said. “I feel I’m getting better mentally and with my skills. But you can always have a bad day, a bad game or a bad series. So you have to be strong mentally.”It’s been a good 12 months for me, especially in the white-ball stuff. Every series that has gone by I’ve looked to improve. I’ve got experience as well and got more confident. I’ve looked to adapt to different conditions and teams, too. I’ve looked to study individual players, studying the strengths and weaknesses of individual players I’ve got a lot better that way.”As well as studying the players he has come up against, he has again been tapping into the vast knowledge of Warne after the pair briefly worked together during England’s series against Pakistan in the UAE last year. Warne was in Dubai on a promotional trip and attended net sessions in Sharjah where he worked with both Rashid and Pakistan’s Yasir Shah. Their paths crossed again this summer.”We had a general talk about legspin,” Rashid said. “He gave me tips and stuff. It was good to see him and good of him to give me a few tips. It was about the basics. Keeping it simple, bowling the same ball, ball after ball after ball and letting natural variation to take over from the hand and the pitch. It was about a positive mindset and keeping it simply, not really a technical thing.”While the one-day and T20 game has been good to Rashid in an England shirt, he had a tougher introduction to the Test game against Pakistan in the UAE – eight wickets in three matches at 69.50. He did show some of his mental toughness when he bounced back from a record-breakingly expensive wicketless debut innings to take 5 for 64 in Abu Dhabi and almost conjure a final-day England victory.England return to Asia later this year for Test series against Bangladesh and India with Rashid expected to be part of the touring squads. He said his Test ambitions remained “quite strong” but was not thinking too far ahead. “That’s a long way away. At the moment, I’m just trying to concentrate on the ODIs and the T20 game; whatever is in front of me. Hopefully that will take care of itself down the line.”

Petersen thrives as Lancashire feather Middlesex's nest

On a dead Lord’s track, the Championship leaders have got themselves into a position where they almost certainly cannot lose

What ingredients there were for a high-quality encounter at Lord’s look already to be heading for a bland conclusion. That may seem melodramatic – should Middlesex collapse tomorrow, it may enter into “misguided” or “facetious” – but there were few other conclusions to draw from a day in which eight wickets fell yet only one was taken.Lancashire’s seven were shed in the pursuit of quick runs to hammer a tiring Middlesex attack further into the dust. Even Tim Murtagh’s shoulders, constantly in a slumped relaxed state, plummeted to knee height. Even Murtagh, a bowler who can make the ball talk for fun could barely muster a whimper from a pitch that does the long-form more harm than good. What should have been a compelling day’s cricket, in near-perfect conditions, asked spectators to find their own source of amusement. The evening session hosted a low sun and with it the chance for them to shed some clothing, get some colour and indulge in the sorts of conversations with opposing fans that only beer and minor heatstroke encourages.”So you see, it’s those bastards across the way – they’re the tight ones,” concluded one such tête-à-tête. It’s those across the way that Lancashire are looking to build a lead over: level on points with Yorkshire going into this match but leading Division One by virtue of number of games won.Middlesex, with their six draws from seven, sat 16 points off the Northern rivals. This fixture between first and fourth felt like it could set the tone for the next half of the season, when captains roll the dice and each session weighs heavier on the nerves. The opening exchanges were very much in Lancashire’s favour as they amassed their highest innings score of the season. Alviro Petersen was thoroughly unflustered, picking up where he left off to add 86 to an overnight 105: perhaps the only surprise was his failure to bring up his double hundred. Looking to move the game on, he was caught and bowled by Toby Roland-Jones, whose 31-over toil was made relatively worthwhile by four wickets.Flanking Petersen were the offerings from the middle order cavalry of Steven Croft, Karl Brown and Liam Livingstone. It was with Livingstone in particular that the most damage was done: 103 runs put on together at six an over – 67 coming in 11 overs after lunch, as Livingstone brought up a 54-ball half-century filled with reverse sweeps and the odd wristy thwack through the leg side. To nitpick, 500 perhaps should have come up easier than it did: a scampered single between Lancashire’s 10 and 11 that nearly resulted in a run out.But even with scoreboard pressure and a 12-over session before tea bowled by Kyle Jarvis and Neil Wagner – perhaps the best opening duo in the domestic game at present – Lancashire were unable to land a telling blow on the hosts. Even the one wicket they managed looked a tad lucky, though that is simply going by Sam Robson’s forlorn expression after he had been adjudged caught at first slip off the leg spin of Matt Parkinson. The disappointment was understandable: he had looked on the cusp of one of those Lord’s vigils he embarks upon when he basically invokes squatter’s rights. If anything, Robson’s wicket sharpened Nick Gubbins’ focus, who gave up driving for a while and worked his way to 71 at the close. He will recommence tomorrow with Stevie Eskinasi, who goes to bed on a new first class best of 43.Lancashire will be hoping that when they wake up tomorrow the pitch might too. Unfortunately this is yet another Lord’s track that needs a defibrillator rather than a roller. The new ball brings something out of it but not for long. From then on, whatever movement there is comes once the ball had passed the stumps. Steven Croft found that out the hard way as he scrabbled around to contend with the late dips and swerves. The skip in his step at the start of the final session had slowed to a trudge when stumps was called. If anything, perhaps the Lancashire bowlers might leave the match with a bit of sympathy for their Middlesex counterparts, whose charge has consistently been hampered by these sorts of pitches. Still, the Championship leaders have got themselves into a position where they almost certainly cannot lose. If they are not still bowling by this time tomorrow then they should consider that a victory.

£4k-p/w Rangers Enforcer Dismantled Hibernian

Glasgow Rangers followed up their impressive Old Firm derby win last weekend with a 3-1 win over Hibernian away from home on Sunday in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a stunning free-kick from captain James Tavernier. He shaped to cross the ball into the box before whipping a strike into the top corner, which caught out David Marshall at his near post.

Romanian international Ianis Hagi then made it 2-0 in the 55th minute as the attacking midfielder rebounded his own blocked shot to rifle a strike into the bottom corner from just inside the box.

Todd Cantwell completed the scoring for Rangers in the 86th minute. The Englishman followed in after Marshall's save from Tavernier and slotted the rebound into the back of the net before Paul Hanlon scored a consolation goal in stoppage time.

There were a number of impressive performers on the day for Michael Beale and one player who stood out alongside the skipper – who was involved in two of the three aforementioned goals – in a rare appearance was central defender Leon King.

How did Leon King perform against Hibernian?

The Light Blues academy graduate staked a claim for a starting position heading into next season with a composed and efficient display at the heart of the defence in his first start since November.

Glasgow Rangers head coach Michael Beale.

He was pivotal to what Rangers did, both in and out of possession, as they were able to completely dominate Hibs from start to finish.

Defensively, the 19-year-old gem could not put a foot wrong as he cruised through the game with impressive ease – as per Sofascore, the 6-foot enforcer won 100% (10/10) of his duels and made four clearances, two interceptions, and four tackles – no other Gers player won more individual battles.

King also won all six of his contests on the ground and both of his aerial duels and this shows that King was able to dominate the opposition attackers, who did not get any change out of the Scottish defender, which also increased the number of opportunities his side had to make things happen going forward.

The teenage titan was also key to what Beale's side did in possession of the ball – as per Sofascore, the 96-touch ace completed 85% (67/79) of his attempted passes, 100% (1/1) of his dribbles, and created one chance for his teammates.

This shows that the £4k-per-week tank was not a liability on the ball and was, instead, able to drive the team forward with the ball to find teammates in good positions, which then allowed them to showcase their quality in the final third.

Therefore, King's performance was exceptional at the back as the youngster was able to combine sublime defending with composure in possession to dismantle Hibernian alongside the usual protagonist in Tavernier, who himself created three chances and scored from right-back as he made a huge impact at the top end of the pitch.

Man United Planning Future Bid For £20,000-A-Week Player

Manchester United are preparing an attempt to snap up Evan Ferguson in a future transfer window, according to a report from Sky Sports.

Who wants to sign Evan Ferguson from Brighton?

The 18-year-old has taken the Premier League by storm this campaign, with the teenager already emerging as a first-team regular and goalscorer for Brighton. Helping the Seagulls to break into the top six, he has managed a total of 17 games this season and has six goals and two assists already. That means he currently has an average of 0.88 goals or assists per 90 minutes – an impressive record for a youngster.

In addition, the attacker has already made an impact for the Republic of Ireland at international level. He's broken into the first team reckoning with three caps and already has his first goal under his belt – showing that the big stage certainly doesn't faze him.

It's these showings that have now led to interest in his services from across the rest of the top flight. A fresh report from Sky Sports suggests Man United are keen to land the forward in the future and that they have laid down plans to prise him away from his current side from the next summer transfer window.

They won't be alone in trying to snap up Ferguson's signature, though, with the striker also wanted by Tottenham Hotspur.

Whilst it doesn't mention that a deal will go ahead this coming summer – which is unlikely considering he has only just penned a new agreement with Brighton – it suggests that the interest and the bids could begin from this time next year.

Are Man United signing Evan Ferguson?

The player certainly looks like he could be a real talent in the future, especially considering what he has already achieved at such a tender age.

Already, the attacker has managed a rating of 6.76 on WhoScored – putting him within the top ten performers in the current Brighton squad. It shows that even at 18 years old, he has already become a vital part of the success his side are having, with the Seagulls assured of a European place with a game to spare.

Even those in the media have already been quick to laud the striker's performances. Football journalist Josh Bunting labelled Ferguson as "excellent", and it seems as though the player ticks plenty of boxes.

If Ferguson was to become a new recruit at Old Trafford, his arrival may well be considered bittersweet, as Sky Sports also noted how he had recently been dubbed a "£50m-plus mistake", with the Red Devils failing to take him in following a previous trial.

Nevertheless, Erik ten Hag would surely love to have the chance to snap up Ferguson this summer, and judging from his performances, the forward will be worth the wait.

South Africa Test players begin pink-ball experience

A cohort of South Africa’s Test players will begin their preparations for the floodlit Test against Australia later in the year by facing the pink ball in the A-team series in Brisbane. The opening four-day game against Australia A at Allan Border Field will be a first experience of facing the pink ball in first-class for the South Africans, albeit this match will be in daytime conditions. The South Africa A squad includes nine Test players, including captain Stephen Cook who made his Test debut against England in January, with some of them having a good chance of being in the squad for the full of Australia tour which starts in October and includes South Africa’s first day-night Test in Adelaide from November 24.The other Test players on this tour are Dean Elgar, Temba Bavuma, Wayne Parnell, Vernon Philander, Dane Piedt, Stiaan van Zyl, Dane Vilas and Hardus Viljoen. Elgar and Bavuma are established in the Test line-up while Piedt is currently the frontline spinner. There had been initial reluctance from the South Africans to play a Test under lights with a lack of preparation and experience in such conditions being a major factor. However, after much behind-the-scenes work an agreement was reached to mean that Australia will host two day-night Tests in their season with Pakistan also playing under lights at the Gabba in December.”The guys are really on a high and looking forward to the first game,” Cook said. “It will be the first time the guys play with the pink ball in a first-class match, so the guys have prepared for that and are very excited about that. The second match of the series will be played in Townsville from August 6-9, before a one-day series that also involves India A, Australia A and a National Performance Squad begins on August 13.

Arsenal Could Sign £17m Star To Emulate White Success

Arsenal have enjoyed a year of vast progression, with Mikel Arteta having overseen the development of many of his assets into some of the top players in their field.

The Spaniard is owed massive credit for how his project has blossomed, from the stuttered start he faced to the 2021/22 failure to secure top four. Nothing has slowed down his steady improvement, and he and his club profited massively last term.

Having now secured Champions League football and announced themselves as the closest competitor to Manchester City by far, the task is now to bridge that gap, with this summer a key opportunity to do so.

Arguably the biggest weakness that was outlined last campaign came at the heart of defence, as William Saliba's mid-March injury saw their form drop and the title charge derailed. Whilst this is largely owed to the immense presence of the Frenchman, a lack of adequate backup truly exacerbated his absence.

Therefore, bolstering their backline should be high on their priority list.

Fortunately, a fine opportunity has already presented itself for this transfer window, as it was reported last month that the Gunners were one of many clubs monitoring Bayern Munich's Benjamin Pavard.

Reports in Italy have stated that due to a dwindling £84k-per-week contract, an offer of just €20m (£17m) could be enough to tempt him out of Germany as reported by Tuttosport, via FCInternews.

Could Benjamin Pavard replicate Ben White?

Given his ability to play at both centre-back and right-back, it is hard not to immediately draw comparisons between the France international and Ben White.

After all, the former Brighton and Hove Albion stalwart moved to north London having enjoyed the bulk of his career through the centre, only for Arteta to employ him at full-back in their most successful year yet. This is no coincidence.

ben-white-arsenal

The presence of such a defensive machine offers that foundation for their free-flowing attack to thrive, and as such Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard have all enjoyed their best goalscoring seasons in the league.

This is owed to the 1.6 tackles and two clearances per game of the 25-year-old whose mere positional awareness makes them a stronger defensive unit.

So, to add another player who has seen similar positional progression to the squad, they would immediately have valid cover for Saliba and whoever is selected as the starting right-back.

After all, during a term in which the Bavarian giants narrowly claimed the Bundesliga title, the 27-year-old has lived up to Uli Hoenes' praise that he would be an "outstanding signing".

His 7.35 average Sofascore rating was actually the second-highest of anyone on his team, only behind Joshua Kimmich, and is upheld through his five goal contributions, 2.3 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per game.

His mindset has also been praised too, with his former boss Julian Nagelsmann claiming back in March: "Benji had a good performance. He always wants to win. He scored goals too today. He did very well against Paris (first leg). He's playing more often in his favourite position and is doing a good job. I know that he feels comfortable here."

With an additional offensive impetus but sharing a broader physique that differentiates themselves from the midfielder-style modern-day full-back, these two could offer huge benefits to the squad depth, not to mention adding another serial winner into their ranks.

Somerset hold nerve in 31-run win

Jack Leach finished with 6 for 42 as Somerset completed a 31-run Specsavers County Championship victory over Warwickshire on the third morning at Taunton.Resuming on 131 for 8, needing a further 53 to win, the visitors battled for 14 overs before being bowled out for 152, Rikki Clarke ending unbeaten on 55.Lewis Gregory was the other wicket-taker as Somerset took 19 points to keep alive their hopes of a maiden Championship title. Warwickshire had to be content with three points and are not yet out of relegation danger with only one game remaining. The first half hour saw Clarke and Chris Wright carefully build on their ninth-wicket stand against the spin of Leach and Roelof van der Merwe.Clarke reached his half-century off 138 balls, with eight fours and a six, and the pair had reduced the deficit to 37, with the stand worth 86, when an inspired piece of captaincy by Chris Rogers brought the breakthrough. He introduced Gregory from the River End and, with his fourth delivery, the seamer had Wright caught behind for 45.”I brought Lewis on because I felt the batsmen were getting into a rhythm against our spinners,” Rogers said. “I just had a bit of a feeling that a change of pace might cause problems.”Such decisions often come down to luck and it’s nice when they go your way. It makes you look like you know what you are doing! When Clarke took a single off Leach’s third ball of the 58th over, Somerset moved in for the kill, surrounding last man Josh Poysden with close fielders. The tail-ender got an inside edge and Marcus Trescothick ended the game with the 394th first class catch of his Somerset career, at leg-gully, breaking a club record set by Jack White, whose career ended in 1937.The wicket sparked jubilant celebrations on the pitch and the home side could celebrate an unlikely win after being bowled out for 95 on the first morning.”It wasn’t the sort of pitch I would want to spend my career batting on,” Rogers added. “Each ball behaved a bit differently and that creates questions in the minds of batsmen, which makes them tentative.”But our spinners are bowling well and I’d take the same sort of wicket in our final home game against Notts if it means winning the title!”However, Warwickshire’s captain, Ian Bell, was more critical of the surface that Somerset had laid on.”The pitch wasn’t dangerous in any way so there was no cause for complaint,” he said. “The ECB want wickets that turn, but I don’t think that sort of surface is great even for the development of spinners.”It may bring them more wickets, but they will then find themselves bowling on slow low tracks if they step up to international level.”As for Warwickshire’s prospects for the final throes of the season, Bell added: “It’s disappointing because we are now right in the mix at the wrong end of the table. The game summed up our Championship cricket this season because we were good in spells, but not consistent enough.”We have a big final at Lord’s to look forward to so we can’t afford to dwell on this defeat. But whatever happens we need to look at our four-day cricket because there have been problems stretching back to the end of last season.”
