Sri Lanka desperate to break rut as de Kock stands in for du Plessis

Quinton de Kock will lead South Africa in the last two ODIs as they will look to give their World Cup hopefuls more chances

The Preview by Andrew Fidel Fernando07-Aug-2018

Quinton de Kock tries to play late through the off side•AFP

Big PictureTwo Tests and three ODIs into the tour, there has been depressingly little competitive cricket between these teams. South Africa were wiped the floor with in the Tests, unable to muster competence with the bat until the final innings of the series. Since then, Sri Lanka have been woeful in the ODIs, their batting, fielding and bowling taking it in turns to fail in the three matches so far. The one-day series has already been decided, which would ordinarily make these last two games fairly pointless. But, thankfully, because the World Cup is on the horizon, there is a little more than pride to play for. Sri Lanka have to peel themselves off the floor, and try yet again to snap this losing streak against South Africa that has now stretched to 11 ODIs. South Africa now have the freedom to trial even more of their World Cup hopefuls. It is the reshuffling of South Africa’s side, prompted partly by the shoulder injury that has ruled captain Faf du Plessis out of the remainder of the tour, that may bring the two teams a little closer together. South Africa might decide there is little point in giving Kagiso Rabada another game, for example, and have Junior Dala fill in, instead. Provided the Pallekele pitch looks somewhat spin friendly, Keshav Maharaj could also come into the mix.The problem for Sri Lanka is that even South Africa’s second-string players seem to perform at a higher level than Sri Lanka’s frontliners at present. Reeza Hendricks, for example, hit a bright debut ton on Sunday, in a series in which no Sri Lanka batsmen have got themselves to triple figures. So even with a slew of potential South Africa changes, it is difficult to suggest Sri Lanka are finally well-placed to win a match.Form GuideSri Lanka LLLWW (completed matches, most recent first)
South Africa WWWLLIn the spotlightWhile South Africa have pinned hopes on Wiaan Mulder becoming a world-class allrounder, another all-round talent may be emerging in the form of Andile Phehlukwayo. Right now, Phehlukwayo’s batting may not quite be good enough for him to claim a place as an allrounder, and yet, on Sunday, the team sent him out ahead of Mulder in the batting order, and Phehlukwayo repaid that faith by hitting three fours and a six in an 11-ball innings that yielded 24 not-out. He has also been good with the ball. Though not as fast as Rabada or Lungi Ngidi, Phehlukwayo seems to have worked out quickly which lengths to bowl on Sri Lanka’s one-day pitches, and that nous has brought him six wickets in the last two games.Although one of the senior batsmen in what is a fairly inexperienced team, Upul Tharanga is yet to make a substantial contribution in this series. In and out of the side for so many years, Tharanga seemed to have unlocked the secret to one-day consistency in 2017, in which he averaged 48.14 with the bat. If Sri Lanka are to be a strong contender for the World Cup, Tharanga will have to ensure he keeps churning out 50-plus scores on a regular basis over the next year.Team newsAiden Markram may come back into the side for the injured du Plessis, with Quinton de Kock standing in as captain in the last two ODIs. South Africa will think seriously about resting Rabada, before JP Duminy takes over the captaincy reins for the one-off T20I.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk, capt.), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Reeza Hendricks, 4 Aiden Markram, 5 JP Duminy, 6 David Miller, 7 Wiaan Mulder, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Junior Dala, 10 Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Lungi NgidiSri Lanka may think about bringing Kasun Rajitha back into the side, perhaps at the expense of left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Kusal Perera, 2 Niroshan Dickwella (wk), 3 Upul Tharanga, 4 Kusal Mendis, 5 Angelo Mathews (capt.), 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Akila Dananjaya, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Lahiru Kumara, 11 Kasun RajithaPitch and conditionsThe pitch on Sunday seemed to be a generic one-day surface with plenty of runs, so expect the same on Wednesday. The ball does tend to zip around under lights at Pallekele, though, which may put the chasing team at a slight disadvantage.Stats and trivia Andile Phehlukwayo averages 36.57 with a strike rate of 100, with the bat. That is largely because he has stayed unbeaten in 10 of his 17 innings Upul Tharanga has hit only one fifty in eight innings this year Kusal Perera needs 24 runs to complete 2000 in ODIs

Chelsea: Poch could sign the next Drogba in "extraordinary" £69m-rated gem

The "striker curse" has engulfed many Chelsea players over recent years. The likes of Alvaro Morata, Gonzalo Higuain, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner were all brought in for big money but failed to excel in the blue shirt.

In truth, the Blues still haven't replaced the potent physical presence of Diego Costa, who departed Stamford Bridge after enjoying a largely successful period in West London, winning two Premier League titles and netting an impressive 59 goals in 120 appearances in all competitions.

Mauricio Pochettino desperately needs a dominant focal point up top and with the January transfer window fast approaching, the Argentine could be presented with more funds to purchase one of Europe's most promising forwards.

Were Chelsea interested in signing Dusan Vlahovic?

Across the summer, Chelsea were heavily linked with a move for Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic to bolster their attacking firepower.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

It was rumoured that the Blues considered offering Romelu Lukaku as part of a swap deal for the Serbian hitman in August and while the Belgian striker agreed on personal terms with the Italian giants, they were unable to strike a deal as the English club wanted Juve to drastically lower their asking price, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The report detailed that the Old Lady were demanding a £34m fee for Vlahovic plus Lukaku, however, the Premier League side were unwilling to go beyond a fee of £21.5m with add-ons included.

While a deal didn't materialise in the summer, there are reasons to be optimistic about a transfer being concluded in the future after Juve teammate Samuel Iling-Junior previously drew comparisons for the similarities that Vlahovic shares with Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba.

He said: "Didier had that energy. Obviously he was a finisher. But when you go on the pitch I think energy is the most important thing in a top player.

"Dusan has got the lot. He speaks on the pitch. But it’s more his energy. When he’s going to press, he just naturally takes you with him.”

Is Dusan Vlahovic similar to Didier Drogba?

Didier Drogba arrived at the club at the age of 26 and quickly established himself as a dominant goal-scoring focal point in Jose Mourinho's title-winning machine.

The Ivorian had the ox-like strength, exceptional hold-up play, incredible movement and incisive finishing in his repertoire that saw him net an outstanding 164 goals in 381 appearances for Chelsea.

Didier Drogba

And in the early stages of Vlahovic's career, it appears that the 23-year-old possesses the unerring attributes that can see him follow a similar path to stardom taken by the former and that is a tantalising prospect for supporters to envisage.

Standing at 6 foot 3, Vlahovic is a traditional frontman, notoriously clinical in front of goal, can hold off defenders and make the piercing movement in behind that the opposition struggles to live with.

Described by teammate Filip Kostic as the "best striker in Europe", the 23-cap Serbian international has netted a commendable 65 goals in 147 appearances in Serie A.

While he would undeniably bring a consistent goal-scoring touch to Stamford Bridge, he's been labelled by former Juventus player Alessio Tacchinardi as "extraordinary" and could be the first step to improving their focal point.

Although it would be a monumental challenge to replicate the legendary legacy that Drogba crafted as a blue-blooded god, the Serbian machine, who is valued at £69m (€80m) as per CIES Football Observatory, has all the tools in his armoury to fix Chelsea's fortunes in front of goal.

As such, with Nicolas Jackson – who has just two league goals to his name this season – failing to fire, a renewed approach for Vlahovic could be needed in January.

Newcastle can soften Burn blow by unleashing £120k-p/w man in new role

Newcastle United have had an excellent few days. After a disappointing defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League last week which was succeeded by a 2-2 draw with Wolves, the Magpies bounced back emphatically.

A memorable 3-0 win in the EFL Cup at Old Trafford to knock the holders out of the competition was followed up by a 1-0 victory over Arsenal in the Premier League on Saturday evening to put Eddie Howe’s side seven points behind leaders Manchester City.

However, it’s not all been rosy in the garden as key defender Dan Burn sustained a nasty back injury against the Gunners which may be set to keep him out of action for a while.

Dan Burn injury latest

Burn landed awkwardly on his back during the first half and struggled until the interval before swiftly being replaced during the break by £40m summer signing Tino Livramento. Howe admitted that the injury “looks worrying” and now the 31-year-old is a doubt for Newcastle’s crucial European bout away at Dortmund on Tuesday.

Losing the £13m man will be a huge blow for the Magpies with some key games on the horizon after having a “ridiculous impact” at St. James’ Park, according to former Celtic frontman Frank McAvennie.

Burn is the second left-back to pick up an injury at Newcastle United over the past week after Matt Target pulled his hamstring two minutes into the side’s midweek game at the Theatre of Dreams and is facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Nevertheless, there is another option that Howe can explore in order to ensure the Newcastle defence keeps their solidity in Burn’s absence.

How Newcastle can soften the injury blow

Kieran Trippier has had yet another tremendous season in the North East, having featured 15 times for the Magpies and registering seven assists in all competitions, including six in the Premier League. Only Wolves star Pedro Neto has earned more across the entire division.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has played at right-back in every single game under Howe in the 2023/24 campaign, according to Transfermarkt. Nonetheless, with Burn likely to be out with a back problem, the head coach could look to use his £120k-per-week defender on the opposite flank for once.

Trippier has previously had experience at left-back. While the right side is his preferred area of dominance, heavy competition from the likes of Reece James, Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold has compelled England manager Gareth Southgate to put Trippier on the left during certain games.

Trippier’s most infamous game at left-back came during the Three Lions’ win over Croatia in EURO 2020 two years ago. The fullback’s impressive display led Southgate to call him a “warrior” and even a “defensive animal”.

During that 1-0 victory against Croatia, Trippier ended the game with an 85% passing accuracy, having completed 14 balls into the final third and was dispossessed just once during proceedings. Furthermore, the former La Liga champion won 50% of his ground and aerial duels, completed five ball recoveries and had one interception, as per FotMob.

In an unfamiliar environment, Trippier thrived and could be the glaring solution to Newcastle United’s left-back crisis, with Livramento, who won the Man of the Match award in midweek against Manchester United, coming in on the right for the time being.

Monank Patel among four debutants named in USA squad for T20 Qualifier

He is one of four first-time selections in the USA squad along with David Wakefield, former Pakistan Under-19 allrounder Jannisar Khan and legspinner Usman Ashraf

Former Gujarat Under-19 batsman Monank Patel is in line to make his USA debut after being named in a 14-man squad for the 2020 ICC World T20 sub-regional Americas qualifier beginning September 19. Monank is one of four first-time selections in the USA squad along with Christchurch-based batsman David Wakefield, former Pakistan Under-19 allrounder Jannisar Khan and New York legspinner Usman Ashraf.USA squad

Ibrahim Khaleel (capt/wk), Usman Ashraf, Elmore Hutchinson, Nosthush Kenjige, Ali Khan, Jannisar Khan, Jaskaran Malhotra, Saurabh Netravalkar, Monank Patel, Timil Patel, Roy Silva, Sunny Sohal, Steven Taylor, David Wakefield

Monank, 25, was the standout player at a USA Cricket selection camp held in Texas this June, scoring an 80-ball unbeaten century in a 50-over trial match. Once a team-mate of Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, the promising top-order batsman had to move to New Jersey for family reasons.Wakefield, 24, has been one of the top batsmen in the last few seasons of Christchurch club cricket playing for Old Boys Collegians CC. He made his Canterbury A debut in March and a month later traveled to the USA to compete in regional trials in Florida, where he made a pair of half-centuries. His performances at the Texas camp were more modest with scores of 6 and 24, however, he stood out with his electric fielding. Wakefield qualifies to play for USA through citizenship, having been born in North Carolina before his family moved back to New Zealand when he was still an infant.Jannisar, who will turn 37 in October, opened the bowling for Pakistan Under-19s in 1996 in a four-day game against an England Under-19 side captained by Andrew Flintoff. He made his first-class debut that same year for Peshawar and went on to play 68 first-class matches, the last coming for PIA in January 2014. He then moved to Houston, where he has been playing club cricket and doing youth coaching. Jannisar went wicketless at the Texas camp, but he did do well as a finisher with knocks of 38 off 47 and 22 not out off 11.Ashraf, who turns 22 on Friday, came through the New York regional combine held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx this June. Invited to the camp, he claimed figures of 1 for 47 and 2 for 44, including the prize wicket of former USA captain Steven Taylor. The young legspinner will serve as understudy to Timil Patel, who is the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20 cricket with 31 scalps from 16 matches.Eight of the other 10 members of the USA squad were part of the group that travelled to Antigua in January for the Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 tournament. Taylor played for Jamaica as part of his first-class contract with the franchise, though he is available to play for USA in the T20 Qualifier since the West Indies domestic season does not begin until October.Ali Khan is also back. The fast bowler was unavailable for the Super50 in January due to work commitments but his performances for Winnipeg Hawks in the Global T20 Canada (10 wickets in eight matches) and Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL (eight wickets in five matches) have brought him back into contention. As expected, Xavier Marshall was left out of the squad. The former West Indies international made his USA debut at the Regional Super50 earlier this year, but was not invited to the Texas camp. Marshall drew the ire of the selectors and coaching staff when he skipped the last two days of the USA Cricket regional combine in New York in order to play a pair of club cricket matches in New Jersey and New York.Aside from Marshall, the others who have been left out following the Super50 are allrounder Adil Bhatti, left-arm spinner Prashanth Nair, offspinner Usman Rafiq as well as spinning allrounders Mrunal Patel and Nisarg Patel. California batsman Srini Salver has been named as a travelling reserve player.USA’s first match at the T20 Qualifier is against Panama on September 19. They will also play Belize and Canada in the double round-robin tournament to be held at a new USD 5.2 million facility at Church Street Park in the Raleigh suburb of Morrisville, North Carolina.

Liverpool could beat Chelsea to £80m signing who’s Coutinho 2.0

There was never any doubting Jurgen Klopp, surely? Last term Liverpool looked a shadow of the team that had run Manchester City so close to the title, and indeed won the Premier League during that bizarre campaign during the pandemic.

The club had lost its aura and that was largely due to a paperweight midfield that was without a cut and thrust capable of competing with the barnstorming central areas that City and Arsenal possess.

They lacked a Rodri, a Thomas Partey, players who crash around while still bringing an element of class to the way they use the football.

However, in 2023/24, that problem has been fixed. A holding midfielder is perhaps still required but in Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister, a brighter picture has been painted.

So, the thought of adding to that young triumvirate of players is exciting. Enter the January transfer window…

Liverpool's January plans

Chief among the club's plans for the upcoming transfer window will be keeping Mohamed Salah who was the subject of a mega bid from Saudi in the summer.

The thought of their great Egyptian leaving in the next few years is becoming more of a reality the longer time goes on and finding an heir apparent is wise.

It perhaps explains recent links to Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz. The German has attracted the interest of Chelsea of late according to reports but Liverpool are in the conversation too.

Indeed, as per claims in Spain, the Reds are even preparing a €92m (£80m) bid to lure the 20-year-old away from the Bundesliga.

Wirtz's stats this season

Widely renowned as one of the most promising young footballers on the continent, Wirtz has recovered exceptionally well from a horrendous ACL injury that kept him out of action for the best part of nine months in the latter stages of 2022.

Despite that, he was still able to feature 25 times across all competitions for Leverkusen last term, posting four goals and eight assists.

In 2023/24, however, he has gone to another level. Under the wing of former Liverpool hero Xabi Alonso, Wirtz already has six goals and ten assists in 17 outings.

It's been a remarkable start to the season for a young talent who sadly for Alonso seems destined for greater pastures.

Wirtz's style of play

Wirtz is a phenomenally versatile player having played on the wing fleetingly in his young career, as well as a second striker and as a classic number 10. It's in that attacking midfield position, however, where he's been electric this season.

A right-footed talent, the player's heat map (as per Sofascore) dictates that he likes to drift inside onto his favoured foot, often operating in the left-hand channel.

Though, as a remarkable goal in October (shown below) dictates, he can also operate equally as well on the opposing side, gliding past players in jaw-dropping fashion.

This is seemingly a player who has it all. Anton Ferdinand, whether you take his opinion seriously or not, is one man who has been left in awe of the Germany international who he claimed should be spoken about "in the same way as Bellingham", a man Liverpool were so religiously linked with before his move to Real Madrid.

Klopp may have Szoboszlai in his ranks now, a man compared to the marvellous Philippe Coutinho but truth be told, Wirtz is the true heir.

Like the Brazilian who left Anfield for Barcelona, he likes those left-hand channels, cutting inside and unleashing a deadly dose of creativity.

At his peak, Coutinho was a freak of nature in the opposition's third of the pitch. During 2017/18, he sat inside the top 2% of positionally similar players in the Premier League for progressive passes per 90 (11.77) and progressive carries (5.60).

Wirtz isn't quite the same level of ball carrier, managing 4.23 per 90 this season in the Bundesliga, but his creativity is immense. Ranking inside the top 2% of positionally similar players in the German top-flight, he has registered 7.59 progressive passes. It's not quite the dizzy heights of Coutinho just yet but at the age of just 20, these numbers will certainly get even better.

Such a generational talent would, therefore, be a wonderful addition to the Anfield ranks. It's just a pity they'll have to break the bank to seal their next Coutinho.

Durham plot winning farewell for Collingwood

A win for Durham at Chester-le-Street would be a nice way for Paul Collingwood to go and there is every chance after Matt Salisbury set up a dominant opening day

ScorecardDurham have made the perfect start to Paul Collingwood’s final match, producing a strong performance to lead Middlesex by 106 runs on day one of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash at Emirates Riverside.Coach Jon Lewis demanded that his players put in a display to reflect the career of the former England all-rounder to respond from their humiliating defeat at the hands of Leicestershire last week. Matt Salisbury rose to the occasion with the ball, claiming his best figures in first-class cricket of 6 for 37 to bowl out the visitors for 121.Gareth Harte and Michael Richardson made fifties to lead the way with the bat as Durham bounced back from their abject efforts from Grace Road. Collingwood’s hopes of ending his career in style were dashed when he was dismissed for 32, although Harte was there at the close unbeaten on 76 with the home side ending the day 227 for 5.Middlesex made the curious choice to bat on a chilly September morning at Chester-le-Street, allowing Collingwood to receive a guard of honour from his team-mates. Nick Gubbins and Sam Robson made a decent start scoring 32 off the first seven overs. However, Salisbury made the breakthrough, producing a fine delivery to take Gubbins’ edge behind to Stuart Poynter for 19. The 25-year-old displayed a good rhythm after an underwhelming first over and he notched his second wicket of the morning by trapping Robson lbw.Chris Rushworth beat the bat several times before being rewarded with the scalp of Middlesex captain Dawid Malan. Salisbury kept bounding in with menace with almost every delivery, accounting for the wickets of Stevie Eskinazi and Robbie White. Mark Wood put Durham in control with the wickets of Max Holden and James Harris.Durham wrapped up the tail in just 16 deliveries at the start of the second session. Salisbury struck twice in the same to claim his maiden five-wicket haul in first-class cricket, dismissing James Fuller courtesy of a bizarre stroke along with Ethan Bamber. Wood wrapped up the innings when he bowled Tim Murtagh, claiming his third wicket of the day.The home side needed a response with the bat after being skittled twice in the sixties in their humiliating defeat at the hands of Leicestershire at Grace Road. Cameron Steel and Alex Lees were composed in the early stages, although both openers were out after making starts as Murtagh and Harris made inroads.Harte and Richardson held firm at the crease, guiding Durham past Middlesex’s first innings total. Richardson past fifty for the second time of the campaign, reaching the milestone off 67 balls, including six fours. However, he was unable to kick on as Murtagh struck to break the partnership of 89.Richardson’s dismissal brought the arrival of Collingwood, who received his second guard of honour of the day – this time from the visiting side. Harte eased the pressure on his skipper playing two fine strokes to reach his fifty off 98 balls.Collingwood was dropped on nine by Eskinazi, who took a blow to the face in the process, forcing him to exit the field. The Durham skipper played a couple of crisp drives through the covers before he fell for 32 to Bamber – leaving the crease at the Riverside for potentially the final time.Harte continued his innings unbeaten with Poynter at the end, with Durham boasting a healthy lead of 106 runs at the close.
