3 dream signings Birmingham City could make using Rooney’s Man Utd connections

The January transfer window reopening could come at the perfect time for Wayne Rooney and his new Birmingham City side, the former Manchester United great turned Blues manager struggling in the St Andrew's dug-out so far.

New fresh bodies into the building handpicked by Rooney himself could be the catalyst for change as the under-pressure boss begins to leave his mark on the Blues, Birmingham falling down the Championship table at a rapid pace under the former Derby County manager's doomed reign to date with only one win from eight.

Rooney could well have a number of Red Devils players on his shopping list, relying on his ties still to Old Trafford in order to gain some exciting talents in through the door at St Andrew's to stop the rot.

Here are three Man United players the already under-fire Blues boss could attempt to sign on loan this January to liven up proceedings…

1 Joe Hugill

Joe Hugill

Rooney could well opt to bring in a fresh face up top this January, with Joe Hugill potentially his desired target who continues to be prolific at youth level for Man United.

Birmingham's strikers are struggling for goals minus young hot-shot Jay Stansfield – with five goals – who is on loan from Fulham, so Rooney could decide another loan buy is worth pursuing.

Hugill has seven goals in all competitions for the U21's side this season, scoring twice last time out in Premier League 2 action versus Everton.

The 20-year-old did struggle out on loan at non-league Altrincham recently – only netting one goal from seven National League appearances in 2022/23 – but Erik ten Hag might well see Hugill going under Rooney's wing on a short-term basis as a beneficial learning curve for his exciting prospect.

2 Omari Forson

Another youngster exciting those at Man United is Omari Forson, who would also benefit from a taste of senior action if he was to be loaned out.

Forson has been deployed at U23 level this season down both flanks and even through the centre of the park, with Forson excelling mainly down the left wing – four of his seven goals in all competitions coming from this role in the side.

Birmingham are light on numbers down the flanks so Forson could well be a worthwhile short-term buy this January, with Koji Miyoshi in recent weeks even moving over to the wing despite starting his career at the Blues mainly as a central attacking midfielder.

Other options in the winger positions such as Oliver Burke have just failed to acclimatise to St Andrew's – the Werder Bremen loanee routinely firing blanks for the Blues with zero goals – and so the skilful and clinical attacker from Man United could be a wise acquisition in the transfer window.

3 Radel Vitek

Manchester United's Radek Vitek warming up.

Lastly, the final name on Rooney's potential shopping list from the Red Devils could be Czech goalkeeper Radel Vitek.

Vitek was a surprise inclusion on the bench against Sevilla in last season's Europa League for Man United, with the 20-year-old shot-stopper highly thought of at Old Trafford.

The ludicrous decision to sack John Eustace and replace him with Wayne Rooney has backfired massively for Birmingham…

ByTom Griffin Nov 22, 2023

Amassing 55 appearances in numerous age brackets at the club, the time could be right for Vitek to experience the cut and thrust of EFL football on loan.

The Blues do have two experienced goalkeeper options on their books, with former Norwich City and Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper John Ruddy the preferred number one, but Vitek could offer the ageing shot-stopper some healthy competition if he was signed by Rooney.

Ruddy has struggled to keep the ball out of his net this season, only keeping four clean sheets from 19 appearances. Could a fresh recruit from the Red Devils hungry for more minutes come in and steal his number-one jersey?

'If the cricket is not serious then you won't be taken seriously' – T10 League CEO

With a decade’s experience of running IPL teams behind him, Arvinder Singh hopes to bring an emphasis on sporting excellence to go with T10’s entertainment value

Barny Read27-Nov-2018

Arvinder Singh, CEO of the T10 League, hands over the Player-of-the-Match cheque to Andre Fletcher•T10 League

One month out from the second edition of the T10 League, the tournament chairman Shaji Ul Mulk was in Mumbai for an important meeting. He was bringing a new CEO on board.Arvinder Singh was closely involved with the IPL for ten seasons, serving as CEO of Kings XI Punjab from 2008 to 2015 before moving to Gujarat Lions for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.Arvinder hadn’t thought much of the T10 League’s inaugural season. But the Mumbai meeting with Ul Mulk convinced him of the potential of the format. Now sitting in the stands as the game roars around him, Arvinder explains his main task as the league’s CEO: to turn T10 into a bona fide tournament in cricket’s calendar.”I did not see [the first tournament] live,” Arvinder tells ESPNcricinfo. “I had heard about this but, to be frank, I did not take it seriously. I don’t blame anybody for what happened last year. It started off as four days of cricket, carnival and entertainment.”At the end of the day leagues are not made of all of that. While that’s okay to keep that in the stands and the entertainment high, if the cricket is not good and the cricket is not serious then you won’t be taken seriously.”That’s the change that you see here and that is something I put my foot down to ensure it stays.”Arvinder’s appointment came in the middle of a testing build-up to the league’s second season. Salman Iqbal, the league’s president, had stepped down, and one of the tournament’s eight franchises had to be rebranded following an order from the Sindh High Court. At one point, it seemed as if the 2018 season wouldn’t get underway at all.”It is certainly a big challenge but I’m not too concerned with what happens behind the scenes,” Arvinder says. “If the product is good and the product is good on the ground, that is what I’m focused on. I think the league itself needs to have the strength within itself to bear the challenges off the pitch and continue to focus on what the product is.”I believe there is tremendous potential for this format. It’s the fourth format sanctioned by the ICC and we have first-mover advantage and very exciting performances.”The ICC’s approval, and the big names on the tournament’s roster – Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Rashid Khan, Eoin Morgan – are evidence to Arvinder that the wider world could fall in love with T10.”You name them, they are all here, so there must be something right about this,” he says. “I keep talking to the players and everybody is pretty excited about this format. It’s up to the league now to take this forward and ensure that we’re able to showcase it in the manner of a professional league.”From a crowd-engagement perspective I appreciate the fact that the crowd wants to be engaged and be a part of the game as well.”This is fine in the stadium but there are also hundreds of thousands watching on TV. From that perspective, if I do not get the eyeballs for serious cricket then all of this has no meaning.”

Farke must finally unleash "fabulous" Leeds titan over £50k-p/w ace

Leeds United will host Ipswich Town just two days before Christmas next time out, hoping to give the Elland Road masses an early present with three points at the end of what should be a barnstorming contest between two promotion hopefuls.

Picking up a victory in this potentially thrilling encounter would ease some worries in Leeds quarters, Daniel Farke's side now winless in their last two matches after losing away to Sunderland narrowly and then having to settle for a share of the points against Coventry City despite dominating for large spells.

Farke might well have to be more cut-throat with his selection choices as the games start to come thick and fast in the Leeds calendar, the Whites showing signs of fatigue recently with the German boss not one for widespread rotation.

He might well have to change this approach, however, with one reserve defender becoming increasingly more eager for first team minutes at Elland Road.

Charlie Cresswell will hope he can get more opportunities to impress in the matches to come if selected, the patient 21-year-old sparingly utilised by his boss even after a promising loan switch to Millwall last campaign.

Charlie Cresswell's numbers for Leeds this season

Only starting one game so far for the Whites in the Championship, the towering titan has shown signs of his obvious quality even in fleeting moments.

Cresswell played his only full 90 minutes away at Birmingham early on this season when the Leeds team was very much still finding its feet after relegation, putting in a sterling effort at the back despite the narrow 1-0 loss on the day.

Charlie Cresswell for Leeds United

Leeds' number five was aerially strong in the game at St Andrew's, winning all but one of his aerial duels against the Blues as per Sofascore.

Further, the 21-year-old didn't shy away from making himself available for a pass in the game – amassing 95 touches in the defeat, accurate with 87% of his passes in a display that showed a real inner calmness for an inexperienced head.

Unfortunately for the one-time Millwall man, he could not quite kick on after starting this game with Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk since forming an effective partnership at the heart of defence.

Yet, Farke will see how he started this campaign and look at his time away in London as grounds for Cresswell being able to come in and do a job for the promotion challengers when required.

The 6 foot 3 Whites centre-back scored five times for the Lions in a fruitful loan stay at the Den, described by his then-manager Gary Rowett as "fabulous" in terms of his potential and "incredible" in his professionalism.

Struijk will be wary that he has keep his up his excellent form for Leeds with Cresswell breathing down his neck, the Dutch defender previously shaky in a Whites strip.

Pascal Struijk's numbers for Leeds this season

Whilst other senior figures exited Leeds in the off-season – the likes of Rasmus Kristensen and Tyler Adams leaving West Yorkshire – Struijk decided to stick it out with the Whites in a bid to help his team mount an immediate return to the Premier League.

It's been a largely positive season from a personal perspective for the Dutch defender, averaging 6.3 ball recoveries per game as a tireless presence.

Yet, he has had his fair share of off-days in the Championship too.

His individual display in a 3-1 home win over Swansea City was noticeably below-par despite Farke's men picking up three points come the end of the game, the 24-year-old failing to go in for a single duel or tackle against the Swans in a weak showing.

He was then caught out most recently against Coventry on Saturday as Bobby Thomas managed to get up between him and Archie Gray to score.

Struijk also experienced a horror season during Leeds' relegation down to the second tier, averaging a second-rate 6.75 Sofascore rating in the Premier League.

Whilst featuring for the Whites in that disastrous campaign, he helped his side pick up a pitiful four clean sheets from his 29 matches.

It even saw football pundit Clinton Morrison describe Struijk as looking uncomfortable during an FA Cup tie against Cardiff last season when speaking to Sky Sports, the 24-year-old now a key part of the Leeds jigsaw under Farke despite this poor season.

Still, with the fixture list becoming congested soon, there must be some temptation on the German manager's end to switch things up slightly and potentially finally give Cresswell a start with the £50k-per-week Struijk – as per Capology – at risk of dropping out if so.

Farke must now unleash the England U21 international and see what he is capable of in a Leeds shirt at this level ahead of Struijk.

Willey suffers shoulder injury
January 22Perth Scorchers import David Willey has been ruled out of the remainder of the Big Bash League with a left shoulder injury. He will fly home on Tuesday night for further assessment and treatment in the UK.It is understood the injury is not serious at this stage but has been bothering Willey, the England allrounder, since the Scorchers’ loss to the Hobart Hurricanes on December 30 in Launceston. He was ruled out of the Scorchers latest match against the Hurricanes last Friday night and the ECB medical staff have advised him to return home.Willey has endured a frustrating tournament form-wise with both bat and ball coming off limited cricket in the lead-up. He was shuffled through multiple roles with both bat and ball. He batted in three different spots in four innings, including opening the batting, and his bowling role changed regularly in the games he played.Willey has not played for England since the India series last July after a back injury ruled him out of the tour of Sri Lanka. The Scorchers do welcome back some key Australian internationals for their next match against the Sydney Thunder on Thursday at Perth Stadium. Shaun Marsh and Jason Behrendorff both return from ODI duty.Wicketkeeper batsman Sam Whiteman has been ruled out for two to three weeks with a quad injury he suffered in the loss to the Hurricanes. But Josh Inglis appears to have overcome a broken toe and looks set to slot in as a like for like replacement.Vince replaces Denly at Sixers
January 11Sydney Sixers have roped in James Vince for the remainder of the season as a like-for-like replacement for fellow England batsman Joe Denly, who has been called up by England for the Test series in the West Indies later this month.Vince, who recently played for Auckland in the Super Smash in New Zealand, had earlier turned out in the 2017-18 BBL season for the Sydney Thunder. He is set join the Sixers squad ahead of their match against the Perth Scorchers on Sunday at the Optus Stadium.”I’m extremely excited about joining up with the Sixers,” Vince said. “The Big Bash is a fantastic competition to be a part of. The guys are playing some great cricket at the minute and are in a strong position heading into the second half of the tournament.”Hopefully I can hit the ground running and make some good contributions that will help us go all the way this year. Sydney is a fantastic place and the SCG is an incredible ground, I can’t wait to get started.”The Sixers are currently third on the points table and have seven more games left in the league stage.Mark Waugh hits at BBL batting
January 4The quality of batting in this year’s BBL has provoked debate. Melbourne Renegades have yet to register an individual half-century in five matches and on Thursday limped to 9 for 126 against Adelaide Strikers. Not for the first time it was spin causing the major problems as Liam O’Connor, Rashid Khan and Colin Ingram proved a handful. It was enough for Mark Waugh to term the standard of batting against spin as “embarrassing” although he had also noted a couple of days previously that the state of some of the wickets wasn’t helping.Australia had an awful time against spin in the UAE last year when they played three T20Is then struggled against Kuldeep Yadav in the India series in November. Their next T20Is are set to be in India during the limited-overs tour which starts next month so life is unlikely to get easier.Maddinson nears comeback
January 4Nic Maddinson is closing in on a comeback from the broken arm he suffered in the Sheffield Shield last month having surprised himself at the speed of his recovery.Maddinson needed surgery after being struck by a short ball from Jhye Richardson and was unsure whether he would hit the surgeon’s timescale of a return in around four weeks. But he appears on course for that with a comeback looking likely when Melbourne Stars face Perth Scorchers at the MCG on Wednesday.”It seems to be pulling up better and better after everything I do,” he told the . So I thought, why not push it a bit harder and try and play.”

West Ham given Bowen contract news after information from Sullivan source

West Ham insider Claret & Hugh have shared a quote from the club's co-chairman David Sullivan in what they describe as "fantastic" contract news.

West Ham tie Bowen down with new deal

Earlier this year, West Ham moved to tie down star player Jarrod Bowen with new and improved terms in a big boost for the club.

"Strong personality" now a firm favourite to replace Moyes at West Ham

The Hammers boss is likely to leave next year.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 23, 2023

The England international's been an absolutely pivotal player under David Moyes this season, scoring 11 goals in just 17 Premier League starts so far, and his form is made all the more important by Declan Rice's departure in the summer.

Bowen appears to have taken the mantle from Rice as West Ham's integral figurehead, a fact recognised by the Irons who rewarded the winger with a long-term contract till 2030 in October.

“I’m so pleased to have signed a new long-term contract at West Ham," said Bowen on his new contract (via whufc.co.uk).

“Everyone knows what this Club means to me, so committing my future until 2030 means so much to me and my family. I’ve loved every minute of my time here. Winning the Europa Conference League in Prague was an amazing moment, scoring the winner in the last minute will be something I’ll cherish forever.

“It’s left us all wanting that feeling again and again – we want to create more memories together, for our fantastic fans, and for this fantastic Football Club.”

However, despite his commitment to West Ham, there have still been reports suggesting that clubs likes Liverpool are looking to sign Bowen as we approach 2024.

This would come as a real worry for supporters, who won't want to see yet another star fan favourite leave so soon after Rice's £105 million move to Arsenal.

Insider refutes Bowen claims in message from Sullivan

There have also been apparent claims that Bowen's new contract includes a release clause for interested parties, but that suggestion has now been refuted by Sullivan himself.

Irons insider Claret & Hugh have a quote from the West Ham board member, who says Bowen's deal actually doesn't contain a clause and the player is 100 per cent committed to east London.

gideon-kidoa-jarrod-bowen-west-ham-opinion

“We had a one on one meeting meeting 6 weeks or so ago and sorted everything out within 12 hours," said Sullivan to C&H. "There is absolutely no release clause. He loves West Ham and has total security with us."

The outlet describes this as "fantastic" news for Moyes and co, who really don't face the prospect of losing Bowen any time soon. Commenting on Jurgen Klopp's fondness of the former Hull City star, West Ham sporting director Mark Noble also says he was never worried.

"To be honest, it didn’t worry me because he’s just signed a new long-term deal with us a month ago," he told TNT Sports (via Liverpool Echo).

"I think Liverpool and Jurgen (Klopp) have always been big fans of Jarrod (Bowen). With the way that Jurgen sets his teams up and the way he plays."

Michael Klinger announces BBL retirement

The 38-year-old is committed to play another T20 Blast season with Gloucestershire in the UK this year

Perth Scorchers stalwart Michael Klinger has announced that he will retire from the Big Bash League at the end of the season. The 38-year-old is the BBL’s second all-time leading run-scorer with 1917 runs, with Brisbane Heat star Chris Lynn only eclipsing him in the Heat’s win over the Scorchers on Friday night.Klinger has been a pivotal part of the Scorchers’ success after crossing from the Adelaide Strikers in 2014, helping them win two titles and reach three finals in five seasons. He made 71 not out off just 49 balls in the 2016-17 BBL final against the Sydney Sixers. But Klinger has just endured his worst season in the BBL, scoring just 115 runs in nine innings at a strike-rate of just 83.33. He even had the misfortune of being dismissed off the seventh ball of an over against the Sydney Sixers and was dropped from the Scorchers side after a duck against the Hobart Hurricanes in the following game.Records – The BBL’s top run-gettersKlinger has been recalled to the squad for Sunday night’s final home game against the Melbourne Stars after Shaun Marsh was ruled out with hamstring tightness but he has announced this will be his swansong.”This season so far has not gone to plan for both myself but more importantly the team and I’m looking forward to seeing the Scorchers get back to the top where we belong next season,” Klinger said.”I have fantastic memories of my time with the Scorchers and I’d like to thank my teammates, coaching and support staff and all our fantastic fans for making my time so meaningful and enjoyable at this great club. Also, a huge thank you to my family for their continued unconditional support.”I’m looking forward to what the future holds for me in cricket either on or off the field.”Klinger is committed to play another T20 Blast season with Gloucestershire in the UK this year. It will be his seventh T20 Blast season at the club. He will captain the side and fill a role as batting consultant.Scorchers coach and former teammate Adam Voges said Klinger had made an enormous impact on the club.”Maxy’s contribution to the Perth Scorchers has been outstanding,” Voges said. “On the field his record speaks for itself and he has played a huge part in our success in recent years.”Off the field you will not meet a nicer person who always puts the team’s needs ahead of his own.”
