Man Utd star who won 100% aerial duels outshone McTominay v Aston Villa

A win that could just act as the catalyst for a second-half-of-the-season charge towards Champions League football.

Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 2-1 on the road this afternoon, which took them five points behind Unai Emery’s side.

Rasmus Hojlund opened the scoring within the first 20 minutes, in what was an end-to-end half full of attacking scenarios for both sides.

After the break, Douglas Luiz equalised for the hosts, but a certain Scott gave Erik ten Hag’s team the potential season-defining three points.

Super sub Scott McTominay

Scott McTominay saved the day once again after replacing Marcus Rashford, which is a substitution that will have left some United fans confused, especially as the visitors needed a goal.

But prior to his arrival, Man United were being overrun in the midfield, with Villa becoming increasingly dominant.

The 27-year-old only made four passes and had six touches in his 17 minutes on the field, but his impact in the final third continues to deliver goals, and important ones at that.

In the 86th minute, McTominay latched onto a wonderful Diogo Dalot cross to produce a bullet header, which left Emi Martinez helpless in the Villa goal.

This was his seventh of the season, making him United’s top scorer in the Premier League. He’s also scored or assisted in all of his last three games, despite starting none.

That said, another player in white stood out in the Midlands today, and it was a man devoid of much praise over the last few years.

Harry Maguire was the real hero

Harry Maguire stepped up immensely in the absence of Lisandro Martinez, putting in a simply “colossal” performance, as per StatmanDave.

Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News gave the number five an 8/10 rating, describing him as “defensively solid", perhaps an understatement considering just good his display at the heart of Ten Hag's defence was.

As you can see, Maguire was a rock at the back all game long while serving as a dominant figure in both penalty boxes. The England international used his aerial strength to win the header which fell to the feet of Hojlund securing Maguire's second assist of the season.

The 6 foot 4 defender also stood strong at the back, clearing corners and crosses for fun while also making four tackles. Maguire also won 12 of his 13 duels in the tie, with a 100% aerial duel success rate, which provided security and assurance when Villa ramped up the anti.

The best way to describe his evening is that he put his body on the line for his team.

To top his performance off, he was comfortable on the ball, taking 71 touches and not giving the ball away often, which isn't always an easy task at a hostile Villa Park where the fans become the Villan's 12th man.

Overall, it was a perfect evening for Maguire and United. Not only will the three points boost confidence, squad morale, and togetherness, but it was a performance that the former captain needed and one that he can build upon.

CA chief Kevin Roberts concedes club cricket decline

Roberts also said that some players were counted twice on the way to reaching CA’s overall census participation figures

Kevin Roberts, the Cricket Australia chief executive, has conceded that club cricket is in “gradual decline” and admitted that there is widespread disaffection in the game’s grassroots following numerous signs of anger manifest in reports in the nation’s two major newspaper groups. In May, published a story revealing an old internal document in which Cricket Australia had called for a generational change in the leadership of clubs, spun to suggest that the governing body had “appealed for the dismissal of thousands of long-serving club volunteers”.This week, following the publication of CA’s annual cricket census figures that habitually trumpet an overall increase in participation, the journalist and columnist Malcolm Knox wrote reports suggesting that the governing body vastly over-inflated its figures, making the contention that registered club cricketers number only about 250,000.Roberts, who had declined to be interviewed by Knox before the publication of the story in the on Sunday and instead asked to speak this week after his return home from the UK, conceded a problem area though disputing the precise nature of the figures. He did so in an open letter to all registered club players and volunteers around the country.”Whilst I disagree with the conclusions reached and the figures provided by Malcolm, what came through clearly to me was the sense that some within the cricket community don’t feel they are being heard,” Roberts wrote. “We acknowledge that the number of registered players in traditional club environments has experienced a gradual decline over the past few years, even though total cricket participation continues to grow at a healthy rate.”Cricket clubs, like all club sport, face retention challenges in an increasingly time-poor society. As a volunteer, I also appreciate that leading a cricket club is becoming harder and new volunteers are not always lining up to help the club stalwarts. The commitment to supporting volunteers and making sure the game has a successful and sustainable future is one of Australian cricket’s top priorities under my leadership.”I understand it will take more than a letter from me to make everything better. It’s on me to lead ongoing consultation and action from all of us at Cricket Australia and the State & Territory Cricket Associations who serve their communities. We need to maximise the impact of the millions of dollars we’ve committed to improving community cricket facilities and the 68 new community cricket staff employed by State & Territory Cricket Associations to support clubs and volunteers.”ALSO READ: How many cricketers does Australia really have?Following the announcement of the census results, published a detailed breakdown of CA’s club participation figures, reflecting three consecutive years of decline in club cricket numbers – from 392,812 male and female, senior and junior players in 2016 to 365,076 this year. There has been a renewed focus within CA upon making its own participation numbers more accurate so that funding and resources can be better directed towards problem areas. At the same time, CA’s community cricket chiefs Belinda Clark (currently acting as the head of team performance) and Kieran McMillan have openly acknowledged that more needs to be done to bridge the gap between burgeoning school programs and clubs.”In recent years, we introduced modified junior formats to improve recruitment and retention, started offering free community cricket coaching programs and invested in growing cricket for girls,” Roberts wrote. “These commitments are starting to bear fruit. Providing improved digital support to reduce volunteer workload is another key focus into the future.”Having spent most of my life in cricket clubs as a player, coach, volunteer and parent, I’m passionate about clubs being the heart and soul of their communities. The initiatives I mentioned above are a positive step in the right direction, and we will continue to engage and listen to cricket communities, even if we don’t like what we hear.”Roberts also conceded that some players were counted twice on the way to reaching CA’s overall census participation figures – something he admitted was true even of his own daughter for the fact she plays both club and indoor cricket – but defended the wider methodology used.”When combining school participation programs and registered players, we reach the total participation figure of 1.65 million. Whilst this does include some players more than once, like my daughter who plays club and indoor cricket, it’s simply not true to suggest that total participation is inflated by double-counting most or all registered players,” Roberts said. “We are proud of cricket’s deep connection with local communities and the fact that cricket plays a part in the lives of so many participants across the country.”Like most organisations, we are working to improve our data. Junior clubs will have noticed this with all registrations being managed online this season, a process which makes it much easier for parents and players to register anytime, anywhere. I have had the privilege of meeting many of cricket’s employees, players and volunteers throughout my lifetime of involvement in cricket.”Cricket has helped shape who we are, and in some cases, has seen us become friends for life. Your passion and commitment to the game are key reasons why cricket is such a strong part of our nation’s fabric.”

Mystery spinner Waqar Salamkheil will 'bamboozle' batsmen – Mandla Mashimbyi

Tshwane Spartans assistant coach admitted that the 17-year old new recruit from Afghanistan was a mystery to them as well

Liam Brickhill04-Sep-2019

Afghanistan’s mystery spinner Waqar Salamkheil

Not many South Africans would have heard of Waqar Salamkheil, the youngest new recruit for the second season of the Mzansi Super League. Indeed, Tshwane Spartans assistant coach Mandla Mashimbyi admitted that Salamkheil “is a mystery to us as well” after the 17-year-old left-arm wristspinner was signed up for R180 000 (US$12,000) at the MSL draft on Tuesday. He has played just 12 first-class matches, one of which was a Test match – against Ireland, earlier this year. Salamkheil picked up four wickets in the match as Afghanistan won by seven wickets. Besides that, he has played in eight T20 matches, seven of which were in the Afghanistan Premier League. Salamkheil played seven games for Kandahar Knights, claiming ten wickets, and a video featuring a few dismissals of those got the Spartans’ team management excited.”We saw a couple of videos, and we really liked what we saw,” Mashimbyi said. “He is similar to [Tabraiz] Shamsi. He is going to bamboozle a lot of guys. Hopefully, he can do his job properly. It’s nice to have that mystery factor. We don’t know what he will bring, but no one else knows either.”Head coach Mark Boucher called Salamkheil’s signing a “brave” decision, and one that was part of a broader strategy to cover all bases after Spartans’ poor showing in the inaugural MSL.While Salamkheil has no prior knowledge of South African conditions, many of his team-mates will know exactly what to expect from the SuperSport Park pitch. Nine members of the squad, including Morne Morkel and Roelof van der Merwe, are either still playing their cricket in local South African teams or have been part of teams that have been based in Tshwane.”Our squad this time has got cover for everything,” Boucher said. “It’s massive to have guys who’ve played there before. They are comfortable in the surroundings, have good memories and have won a lot of trophies. That will play to our advantage.”Boucher added that the Spartans would remain on the lookout for a new captain, with AB de Villiers vacating that role this season. “AB won’t be captain, we’ve discussed that. He’s a fantastic player but he must go out there and play and perform like he’s been performing in the last while.”We have a few leadership options, we’ll talk to them and see how they feel. I don’t think AB needs that burden, he’s in that stage of his life where he must enjoy his cricket and that’s probably when he plays his best.”

Rodgers must replace Kyogo with Celtic’s "sensational" star

Celtic have found themselves in a real race to land the Scottish Premiership this season as they battle their closest rivals to secure the trophy.

The Hoops are currently second in the table and two points behind Philippe Clement's Rangers ahead of tonight's round of fixtures in the top-flight.

Brendan Rodgers' side have drawn two of their last four matches in the league, which has resulted in their drop down to second place, and the Northern Irish head coach will be hoping to avoid any more dropped points this evening.

The Bhoys host Dundee at Parkhead and come into this match off the back of an unconvincing 3-1 win against Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers applauds the fans.

They were 1-0 down at half-time and needed two goals in stoppage time to secure all three points, as substitute Adam Idah made a huge impact off the bench.

Rodgers must now brutally ditch Kyogo Furuhashi from the starting XI in order to make room for the Ireland international to be unleashed from the start.

Kyogo Furuhashi's performance against Motherwell

The Japan international endured a rough 45 minutes of action at Fir Park before being hauled off at the break to be replaced by the deadline day loan signing from Norwich City.

After the match, Rodgers confirmed that the half-time substitution was a tactical one, although he also added that the former Vissel Kobe star did have a knock on his shoulder, as Kyogo was not providing the focal point of the attack that was needed.

The statistics back up that assessment from the Northern Irish boss as the 29-year-old lightweight only won one duel against an opposition player in those 45 minutes.

Celtic forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

Staggeringly, the Japanese forward also failed to complete a single pass to his teammates as all three of his attempted passes went astray.

He ended the half with a 0% pass accuracy, 0% dribble success rate, and one 'big chance' missed for the Hoops, which illustrates how poor the attacker's performance was against Motherwell.

Adam Idah's impact against Motherwell

After Kyogo's disappointing half of football, Idah came on to save the day with a superb performance and impact during the second half of the game.

The Irish marksman, whose display was hailed as "sensational" by Chris Sutton, did not take long to make his presence felt as he got on the end of a cross from Greg Taylor to brilliantly guide his header into the far corner to make it 1-1 in the 51st minute.

He then scored the goal to put Celtic 2-1 up in stoppage time, before Luis Palma added a third, in the 94th minute with a fantastic finish on his left foot from Alistair Johnston's cross.

The Norwich loanee did superbly to get across his defender and opened his body up to finish into the bottom corner on his weak foot, which showed great composure and quality at that point in the match.

Along with his goals, Idah's all-round performance was impressive. He won three of his six duels, completed one dribble, and completed 89% (8/9) of his attempted passes in 45 minutes plus stoppage time on the pitch.

These statistics show that the 23-year-old ace offered far more to the team than Kyogo both in his contributions in front of goal, in build-up, and out of possession, with his finishing, movement, link-up play, and strength.

Adam Idah's form for Celtic

The £23k-per-week striker did not arrive to much fanfare when he joined on loan, with no option for the club to make it permanent, from English Championship side Norwich on deadline day.

Norwich forward Adam Idah.

Idah had only started 12 of his 28 league appearances for the Canaries during the first half of the campaign, which meant that the Hoops – on the face of it – were signing a back-up from the second division in England to solve their goalscoring woes.

However, the Ireland international has hit the ground running in Scotland and possibly left David Wagner wondering why he did not start him more in Norfolk.

As you can see in the table above, the 6 foot 3 monster has provided Rodgers with a phenomenal threat at the top end of the pitch, with five goal contributions in four appearances.

These statistics, and his fantastic impact against Motherwell, show why the manager should unleash Idah from the start against Dundee this evening, as he has the quality to be a match-winner for Celtic.

Kyogo Furuhashi's struggles this season

Meanwhile, Kyogo should be brutally ditched from the XI to make way for him after his disappointing display at Fir Park last time out on Sunday.

It was, unfortunately, not a rare off-day for the Japan international as he has struggled at times this season, following on from his immense form last term.

The experienced marksman plundered 27 goals in 31 Premiership starts during the 2022/23 campaign but has not been able to carry that level of scoring over to this season.

Celtic winger James Forrest warms up with Kyogo Furuhashi.

Kyogo has played 27 times in the Scottish top-flight this term and has contributed with nine goals and three assists, which is a return of one strike every 204 minutes on average. That is down considerably from his average of one goal every 86 minutes under Ange Postecoglou last year.

His finishing has left a lot to be desired as the Japanese gem has missed more 'big chances' (13) than the forward has scored goals (nine), which suggests that he has not made the most of the chances that his teammates have provided him with.

A pass success rate of 67% and a duel success rate of 39% in the Premiership this season also does not suggest that he is making up for his wasteful finishing with quality in the build-up or out of possession.

Put simply, Idah has more to offer for Celtic in the number nine position than Kyogo on current form, both on and off the ball and in front of goal, which is why the Irish dynamo should be brought in ahead of him from the start against Dundee this evening.

David Ornstein shares Everton appeal update he’s heard contrary to reports

It's been a frustrating season so far for Everton, to say the least, with Sean Dyche's side earning the results of a mid-table side only to sit on the verge of the relegation zone due to a 10-point deduction earlier in the campaign. Now awaiting the result of their appeal regarding that deduction and the result of their second Financial Fair Play charge, David Ornstein has provided an update for Everton fans.

Everton appeal news

In the best-case scenario, Everton will win their appeal over the initial deduction and have any relegation fears instantly eased in the Premier League. Without the deduction, those at Goodison Park would be sitting comfortably 12th in England's top flight and 10 points clear of the relegation zone. As things stand, however, if they fail to win their appeal, the Toffees will remain just outside the dropzone and above Luton Town on goal difference.

"Brilliant" player has no future at Everton after ruthless Dyche decision

He has endured a season to forget.

ByTom Cunningham Feb 22, 2024

In the worst-case scenario, not only will Everton fail in their appeal, but also be hit with a second punishment after being charged for breaking profit and sustainability rules once more at the start of the year. It was a decision that the Merseyside club were left unhappy with yet again though, releasing a statement on X.

David Ornstein has now at least provided an update and twist on the timeline of Everton's appeal and second charge, writing in a Q&A for The Athletic: "I hear the Nottingham Forest case will come next and then Everton’s second charge, but some are of the understanding it’s the other way around. Clearly, the speculation is not helpful to anyone and the quicker there is clarity the better – for the clubs involved and the Premier League as a whole.”

If that is to be the case, then Everton will undoubtedly be keeping a keen eye on the punishment that Forest face, as they prepare for the worst once again.

Potential consequences of Everton's second charge

If Everton were hit with a second point deduction and they failed in their appeal of the first one earlier this season, then it would likely all but end their Premier League survival chances. And with that relegation could come a flurry of departures this summer, including Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana.

According to recent reports, Branthwaite, valued at £75m, has attracted the interest of Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur, and is also even a shock target of Liverpool's. If Everton dropped down to the Championship, it remains to be seen whether they'd receive their hefty asking price for the defender or be forced to accept a lower offer.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Meanwhile, Onana has been at the centre of rumours regarding Chelsea and Newcastle United in recent months and could yet get his move this summer. Like Branthwaite, relegation could see the Belgian sold in a cut-price deal. As the weeks tick by, the more nervous Everton will come that their actions off the pitch will have dire consequences on the pitch for Dyche's side, who have otherwise performed well this season.
