Sunil Gavaskar wants 'substantial' pay hike for domestic players

He warned that the Ranji Trophy would remain an ‘orphan and poor cousin’ of the IPL if wages don’t rise

Sunil Gavaskar has called for a “substantial” hike in the wages paid to India’s domestic cricketers, and asked BCCI president Sourav Ganguly to look into bridging the pay gap between the Ranji Trophy and the IPL.At present, domestic cricketers earn a match fee of INR 35,000 per match day, and share among themselves 10.40% of the BCCI’s annual media rights income. Their revenue pales in comparison to the amounts that players can earn from the IPL auction, with a minimum base price of INR 20 lakhs.”IPL dominates Ranji Trophy,” quoted Gavaskar as saying, while delivering the Lal Bahadur Shastri Memorial Lecture in Delhi. “Unless their match fees are increased substantially, it will be considered an orphan and poor cousin of Indian cricket.”Gavaskar placed the earnings of domestic and IPL cricketers in relation to their respective workloads.”I am hoping new president Sourav Ganguly will look into this,” he said. “The disparity that you see between IPL players, who don’t always play first-class cricket, and those who play all the domestic games, about 80 days, and somebody who plays 14 days of IPL.”There is big disparity. I am talking about the uncapped players. Hopefully that will be narrowed down as much as possible.”

Fabrizio Romano shares new David Moyes contract update out of West Ham

Fabrizio Romano has shared his own update on the future of manager David Moyes as the West Ham boss' deal ticks closer to expiry.

Discrepancies over Moyes contract situation at West Ham

The Scotsman, as things stand, is set to leave the London Stadium on June 30th with no new terms signed.

West Ham desperate to tempt defender as they ready salary offer

He could be a very astute option.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 5, 2024

Moyes stands out as one of the club's most successful ever managers, having guided them to a first piece of major silverware since the 1980s last season, with West Ham clinching the UEFA Europa Conference League triumph in Prague.

This comes amid successive campaigns qualifying for Europe under Moyes' tutelage, West Ham achieving that feat in each of the 60-year-old's full seasons in charge since he took over for a second stint in 2019/2020.

However, there have also been some complaints over Moyes' pragmatic approach to games during his time at West Ham, and their domestic form last season nearly resulted in the former Everton boss being shown his P45 (Jacob Steinberg).

His tenure is splitting the Irons fanbase as of now, with technical director Tim Steidten looking at managerial alternatives to Moyes, should the club and their head coach opt to part ways.

While Moyes has stated that a new deal is on offer at West Ham, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has actually refuted such a suggestion.

“There have been provisional talks over a new deal for David Moyes,” stated Ex back in February.

“However, I’ve been advised that at no point it’s been put forward for signing. The manager possibly was referring to an agreement but that’s provisional, but not in front of him to sign.

“It’s understood that any decision by the board as to whether to offer him an extension will be made at the end of the season, following a review on how the season pans out.”

Now, as per Romano, rumours are circulating again in regard to Moyes' future as we slowly approach the crunch summer period.

Fabrizio Romano shares Moyes contract update out of West Ham

Romano has shared his own update on Moyes' future at West Ham in an interview with CaughtOffside this week.

Supporters will be pretty eager to find out what is happening with Moyes, and whether or not the club have fully identified a preferred candidate to succeed him this summer.

David Moyes.

However, according to Romano, it remains the case that nothing has been officially decided.

"Rumours appear to be continuing on David Moyes but at this stage I’m not aware of decisions made about him by West Ham,” Romano said to CaughtOffside for his Daily Briefing.

“The club are fully focused on the Premier League and European football, so everything that comes next will be discussed later. I think many times we heard that Moyes was almost gone and he’s still there.

“Nothing is decided yet.”

Women's T20 World Cup a chance for England to 'put a few things to right' – Natalie Sciver

England name squad to face Ashes foes on Australian turf with Georgia Elwiss adding to all-round arsenal

Contesting a global tournament is motivation in itself, but for England’s Women’s World T20 squad, their campaign on Australian soil will also carry an inevitable desire to make things right. It is a fact not lost on Natalie Sciver as she prepares for her fourth T20 World Cup with an England squad comprising vast experience and raw youth, a new coaching set-up and more than an notion of something to prove after a disappointing home Ashes defeat during the English summer.”A lot has changed since then for us really,” Sciver told ESPNcricinfo on Friday. “As a group we’re in a good space to put that series behind us and hopefully get a few wins.”Sciver and Katherine Brunt form not only part of England’s experienced core but two thirds of a triple all-round threat identified by new coach Lisa Keightley along with Georgia Elwiss, who joins the squad in place of spinner Kirstie Gordon as the only change to the England touring party which defeated Pakistan in three ODIs and two completed T20Is in Malaysia last month.During that series, Sciver struck an 85-ball century in the second ODI shortly after a successful WBBL season with Keightley’s Perth Scorchers where she made 342 runs in 13 appearances at an average of 38.00 and with a strike rate of 123.02.Sciver has enjoyed some personally satisfying moments in the shortest format, becoming the first English cricketer to take a T20I hat-trick, against New Zealand in 2013, and the first woman to hit a six at the inaugural WBBL in 2015, but to win the World Cup final on March 8 would be something else.”After the summer we had, I think it would be really special,” Sciver said. “To be able to keep putting ourselves out there as a team and compete and put ourselves out there to succeed or to fail, as a squad that’s all we can ask of ourselves, to be able to turn up and do the best that we can with the conditions that we’ve got, so looking forward to hopefully putting a few things to right.”Natalie Sciver talks with Lisa Keightley during a Perth Scorchers game•Getty Images

Sciver said going straight from their 12-4 defeat in the multi-format Ashes series into the Kia Super League, meant many players didn’t have time to deal with the disappointment until much later.”We probably put a few things on hold until after the KSL and really waited for that time off to kind of re-set and make sure that we’re fresh again to go in the winter,” she said. “It’s motivation in itself to be in a world tournament and on the world stage and hopefully show everyone what we can do again and just make sure that we’re kind of in our own bubble.”Elwiss returned to action during the drawn Ashes Test after a stress fracture in her back had put her out of the game for five months. She last featured at a T20 World Cup with a solitary match in 2016, scoring a duck and claiming 2 for 9 in England’s emphatic win over Pakistan in Chennai. But Keightley said it was her two years’ experience playing for Melbourne Stars in the WBBL that helped seal her place this year, with England to open their tournament against South Africa in Perth on February 23.”We looked at what we had and I thought we had probably too many spinners for what we need out in Australia so we’ve opted for a couple of seamers,” Keightley said.”For Georgia, she covers two skill sets with the ball and with the bat. Georgia has played in Australia in the WBBL and done really well out there so for me she was an important inclusion into our team to give us options and a player who’s got experience out on Australian pitches and her variations will come in handy out there.”England Women’s T20 World Cup squad•Getty Images

The England squad has four players aged 24 or under with Freya Davies, Sarah Glenn and Mady Villiers all set to make their T20 World Cup debuts and spinner Sophie Ecclestone somewhat of a veteran at the age of just 20, having been part of the side which finished runners-up to Australia in 2018.For 24-year-old Davies – who has played just five T20Is – it could be a baptism of fire if called upon as part of England’s pace attack at the WACA, but Keightley has every faith in her.”I think she’ll be fine because a lot of people don’t know what Freya Davies does,” Keightley said. “It’s quite nice to have a few players that are unknown and teams aren’t sure what they do. You have to take your time and have a look and in T20 you can’t do that for too long.”I’d be telling her to play how she’s played, that works, that’s got her here, and not to go too far away from that. If she can do that, I think she’ll go pretty well.”The squad leaves for Australia on January 22 for a warm-up T20 tri-series against Australia and India.Meanwhile, the ECB have announced that England Women will host India for two T20Is starting at Taunton on June 25 and four ODIs from July 1 in Worcester, followed by two T20s and four one-dayers against South Africa starting in Hove at the beginning of September.

Celtic plotting move for £6,000 p/w international who fits Rodgers’ profile

Celtic are thought to be preparing an offer to sign an in-demand player this summer, according to a new report.

Celtic want new goalkeeper, winger and striker

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers are currently looking to seal another Scottish Premiership title ahead of Rangers, with the two rivals also set for a showdown in the Scottish Cup final next month.

“Incredible” Celtic transfer target now likely to leave for free

The Bhoys could land a bargain this summer.

ByBen Browning Apr 18, 2024

However, behind the scenes, Celtic are already making plans ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with plenty of business wanting to be done. Reports have suggested that those at Parkhead want a new goalkeeper, winger and striker, with a replacement for the retiring Joe Hart at the top of the agenda. Rodgers previously admitted that that the club could be “braver” with their additions.

“I would go with supporters thinking we could maybe be a little bit braver in terms of bringing in another level of player. But that’s up to me to try and fix that over the course of my time here. You look at the strategy here and you have to be careful because in some ways it has worked. You bring in players for a minimal fee and then they go out and make the club a lot of money.

“What I want to hopefully balance in my time here is that we can still do that, because it is an important part of the modern game. But we also want to be brave enough to hang our hat on a ready-made player.”

A number of keepers have been linked with moves to Scotland, such as Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher, Trabzonspor's Ugurcan Cakir, Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson and Werder Bremen's Michael Zetterer.

Loanee Adam Idah could make his move to Celtic Park permanent, with Blackburn Rovers star Sammie Szmodics another attacking target. However, another player has now emerged on the Hoops’ radar, but they aren’t the only side keen.

Celtic plotting move for Bayer Leverkusen ace

According to Football Insider, Celtic are plotting a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Patrick Pentz. The left-footed shot-stopper is currently on loan at Danish side Brondby and is also wanted by Southampton and PSV Eindhoven.

It is believed that Pentz, who picks up around £6,000-a-week, ‘fits the type of profile Rodgers is looking to bring in between the sticks’ due to his ability on the ball.

An Austria international, Pentz is under contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2025, so this summer could be the last chance the newly crowned Bundesliga champions have at receiving a fee for his services.

However, saying that, Leverkusen signed Pentz on a free transfer in January 2023 and he is yet to make a senior appearance for the German side. At the age of 27, Pentz may want guaranteed first-team football at his next club, and you could say that Celtic would be able to offer that with Hart set to retire, making this one to watch.

Kohli says toss had big impact, but wants more competitiveness from his players

Rues lapses that led to first-innings deficit that was ‘hard to come back from’

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Feb-2020

Over the dominant home season, India’s coach Ravi Shastri talked about taking the pitch and the toss out of equation, which, while lofty, is something for dominant teams to aspire to. To a large extent, India did do that in home Tests, but in away conditions against good teams, tosses can play a big part. That was the first thing Virat Kohli mentioned in his post-match interview with Simon Doull after a ten-wicket loss as early as on the fourth morning in Wellington. However, he also spent some time talking about how the India batsmen and bowlers needed to be better despite getting the rough end of the toss.”Day one it was probably the toss that turned out to be very important,” Kohli said. “But at the same time, as a batting unit, we take a lot of pride in being competitive, and we were just not competitive enough. I don’t think we put their bowlers under enough pressure in the first innings. Anything over 220-230, then you are talking a different language. Even the deficit looks much lesser if you get that score on the board – and if you get the last three batsmen out cheaper, which wasn’t the case… But yeah, that first innings put us behind the game already, and that lead put us under pressure, which was hard to come back from.”India’s bowlers don’t usually come up against conditions where staying in good areas for long periods is not good enough to get you wickets. In New Zealand, the definition of good areas is different, and you have to vary your angles a lot to get something out of the slow surfaces that keep getting better as matches progress. India were generally shorter of those good areas, and didn’t quite use variations as well as New Zealand – no doubt, much more accustomed to bowling there – did.Not only that, the last three New Zealand wickets went on to add 123 runs, which broke the back of India’s resolve, which was built largely on Ishant Sharma’s five-for after he beat the odds to make this Test despite a grade-three ligament tear on his ankle in January.”I think as a bowling group they have taken a lot of pride in being competitive and bowling good channels for long enough,” Kohli said. “Till about seven wickets we were really good. Even when Ross [Taylor] and Kane [Williamson] had a partnership, we got stuck in. We thought, ‘Okay if we stop them under a lead of 100, it is a great effort from hereon’. Because the wicket did get better to bat on. But I think those last three wickets and 120-odd runs really hurt us and really pushed us out of the game.”I think overall we really did put in a good effort but we still could be a lot more disciplined. That’s something the bowlers have recognised themselves. That’s not something that needs to be pointed out to them anymore. They were not as happy with their bowling performance as they would have been otherwise. That can happen in this game at the international level, but it’s about how we learn from it and how we bounce back.”Kohli wasn’t about to be harsh on any particular batsman, but wanted a better show from the whole group. “You don’t want to be too hard on the guys because Prithvi [Shaw] has played only two innings away from home now, and he will figure it out. He will find ways of scoring runs. He is a natural stroke-maker, and he will find ways of scoring runs and putting up good starts for us more often than not.”I think Mayank [Agarwal] was outstanding in this game, first innings as well as second innings. Really applied himself well. And he is probably the only guy along with Jinks [Ajinkya Rahane] that got some kind of tempo and momentum going for us as far as batting is concerned. I think we have to stick to our template that has got us success and not think too much about where we are playing or what kind of pitch we are playing on. Our strength is to put enough runs on the board for our bowlers to get attacking. I think that is something as a batting unit that we need to take more responsibility.”Kohli also reaffirmed his faith in Shaw and his attacking qualities during his post-match press conference, when asked if there was any technical issue the young opener needed to sort out.”I think we can sit down and analyse maybe after 8 or 10 similar dismissals,” Kohli said. “I don’t think for a guy who is playing away from home, probably experiencing a different kind of bowling attack at the international level compared to playing at home – he will figure out, he will find ways to score runs because he is a natural strokeplayer and he scores runs. It’s not that he gets small runs, he gets big runs and knows how to get runs.”It’s just a matter of understanding the pace of the wicket and conditions as soon as possible. Again, when he is in a clear frame of mind, he is very, very destructive. I think overseas as you would have seen, whenever we have done well, the opening partnership has been with a lot of clarity and positivity, even clearing the in-field, taking bowlers on, so that you put them under pressure. He is that kind of a player.”Once he feels that he can do it, I think it will be a different ball game. The mindset can shift very quickly. I think as a batsman until you are committing the same mistake about seven or eight times, you can’t really sit down and worry about things too much. It’s just a matter of spending enough time and then things start to flow automatically. He obviously wants to perform and no doubt about it, every batsman wants to. We need to give him that time to get used to the conditions a little bit and once he starts scoring, he will feel more confident about it. I don’t think at this stage he needs to be sat down and be explained what’s going wrong because I don’t see anything wrong. It’s the execution of things which wasn’t there in this game which if it comes off, it’s a whole different language.”

Newcastle interested in signing 22-year-old "jewel" this summer

Newcastle United are interested in completing the signing of a defensive "jewel" this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with lots of potential new signings at the end of the season, as PIF look to provide Eddie Howe with enough funds to make significant reinforcements.

Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande has jumped out as a primary target in recent weeks, with the 20-year-old Ivorian considered an ideal long-term partner for Sven Botman at the heart of Newcastle's defence. Contact has even reportedly been made with the defender, further suggesting that he could come to Tyneside in this summer.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Elsewhere, Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could depart Stamford Bridge in the coming months, and the Magpies are seen as contenders to sign him, battling Tottenham for his signature. There have also been links surrounding Brentford and England ace Ivan Toney should Howe decide that he wants to add to his attack.

Newcastle fans will also be hoping that a number of key players stay put rather than move elsewhere, and Callum Wilson could now reportedly remain at the club. That's partly due to Financial Fair Play and choosing not to bring in an expensive striker in his place.

Newcastle want defensive "jewel"

According to a new report from Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are keen on signing Salernitana centre-back Lorenzo Pirola in the summer window.

The 22-year-old is described in the report as a "real jewel" of a player, and there is hope that the Magpies could snap him up for a fee of around €30m (£25.7m).

Pirola could be exactly the type of profile that Newcastle are looking for ahead of next season, in what is a crucial area of the pitch to add at least one new face. Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles are now both in their 30s, with the latter also currently out with a serious ACL injury, so they hardly represent the long-term picture at St James' Park.

Salernitana ace Pirola has experienced a tough season with his team, who sit bottom of Serie A by some distance, but he has still arguably stood out as one of their best players. He has averaged 3.2 clearances and 2.3 aerial duel wins per game in the competition, as well as winning 1.3 tackles per match, which is impressive considering he is one of the youngest members of the squad.

The fact that his side have been relegated to Serie B also means that could be expected to move on, and this could be beneficial for Newcastle, giving them an even better chance of signing him.

Freedman could strike gold by immediately axing £110k-p/w Newcastle trio

He’s been linked with replacing Dan Ashworth at St James’ Park this summer.

ByEthan Lamb Apr 26, 2024

Back in 2019, it was reported that both Manchester City and Manchester United were eyeing a move for Pirola, with the pair watching him for Italy at the Under-17 World Cup. This further shows his potential as a player, and why the Magpies should look to strike a deal for him.
