Selected bowlers will begin individualised training next Wednesday
George Dobell14-May-2020Ashley Giles believes resuming training will be “safer than it is to go to the supermarket” for England’s players and support staff. Giles, the managing director of England men’s cricket, has unveiled plans for around 30 players to return to training in the coming days and weeks, with a view to staging international fixtures from July. While Giles accepts “we are all nervous” of the threat posed by Covid-19, he said the measures put in place to ensure the safety of all involved could create “conditions where we can play some Test cricket”. He hoped the steps taken would assuage the understandable concerns of not just prospective England players and support staff, but those of the opposition, and West Indies in particular, who are scheduled to be the first tourists of the summer.ALSO READ: Players given opt-out as government issues return-to-training guidelines”These are the very first tentative steps back to playing cricket,” Giles said. “This is individual-based training, so in many ways we should be able to get control of the environment so it’s safer to go back to practice than it is to go to the supermarket. It should be that controlled an environment. In this first phase, this should be a safer environment than going about daily life as it is: shopping, etc.”I went shopping last week and it’s a really weird feeling when you go out. You are almost threatened by anyone who comes near you. It can be quite scary but we are doing everything we possibly can to answer all of West Indies’ questions. We will be speaking to Pakistan as well and mitigate as much risk as we possibly can. We can’t mitigate all risk but as much as possible to get guys comfortable.”We are also outside where we know the risks are far less. We will certainly carry out the right risk assessments at the venues. We will make sure all the staff are trained and that we have the right equipment, including PPE [personal protective equipment]. We will make sure everything is there for the guys to go about their business as safely as possible.”Would I be confident if I were a West Indies player? I would be nervous, certainly, but we are all nervous aren’t we? I’m not making light of this but there are risks every time you go outside the house. We need to mitigate as many of the risks as we possibly can.”While much of the ECB’s efforts are centred on creating something as close to a bio-secure environment as possible, Giles revealed that players will occasionally be allowed to leave the “bubble” in order to visit their families. This may be especially relevant to England’s Test captain, Joe Root, who is expecting his second child in July.”We are trying to create an enlarged household,” Giles said. “I’m currently living with four in my household, but there may be a household of 35 players and staff in and around that Test squad. Once they are in that environment and tested and clear, we hope they can lead pretty normal existences.”But it isn’t realistic to expect them to be in a bubble for 10 weeks. While these guys are used to touring for perhaps three or four months, these aren’t normal conditions and people will want to see families. They are going to want to get home and see their kids. So we have to look at ways we can make that happen.”We are going to have to find ways where we can get players out of the environment. We are either going to have to be smart with how we can get guys in and out of that environment or we are going to have to be smart with selection.”Joe Root watches on during England training•Getty Images
The players involved (approximately 30) and venues to be used – seven initially and then 11 as more players return to training – will be announced early next week. The first training sessions, involving only bowlers, will start next Wednesday. The seven venues have not been confirmed but are believed to be Chester-le-Street, Edgbaston, Emirates Old Trafford, Hove, Kia Oval, Taunton and Trent Bridge. While there may be some surprising names among the 30, some may be seen primarily as net bowlers.”We will need to take a bigger group of players in with us whether that be to cover injury, net bowlers or practice matches,” Giles said. “We will have a red-ball focus at first, with the white-ball players [coming] later. Initially, it will be guys with a red-ball focus who may or may not have been involved in our system this winter and before who we’d like to go back to training.”ALSO READ: Closed doors open opportunities for England fringe playersGiles also revealed that, at this stage, none of the players or support staff likely to be involved has either been infected or opted out of the resumption of training. He confirmed, however, that should anyone decide to do so, there would be no negative consequences. He also indicated that coaches from outside the current England system will be utilised.”It may happen and that’s fine,” he said. “These are different circumstances and there will be no prejudice. But I hope we can put an environment in place that’s safe enough for guys to trust us that they can go back and take those first tentative steps to cricket.”We’re definitely going to have to mobilise the help of some of our network coaches. So, at one venue, four or five bowlers may train individually but with the same coach. But with social distancing they shouldn’t be close enough to pass anything on. It’s essential we stick to these guidelines and do it properly otherwise it will cost us.”A big part of my job is trying to get cricket on. There are performance aspects of what we do which is about winning and being the best. But I also have responsibility to try and get cricket going. It has to be safe and it has to be right. We would never compromise the safety of our players and our people. We have to remain confident and, right now, I am confident.”I think we have all got to understand there is a huge economic cost to the whole game. Helping to keep the lights on everywhere is really important. We can play a big role in that. We are a business like everyone else. Businesses across the world are suffering right now and we have got to try and do our bit to protect the business.”
Chelsea chiefs have discussed the possibility of hiring a UEFA Coach of the Year winner to replace Mauricio Pochettino.
Chelsea manager rumours
The Argentine has had plenty of disappointing moments during his first season at Stamford Bridge, including the EFL Cup final defeat to Liverpool at Wembley and, more recently, the 5-0 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League. However, that defeat at the Emirates is Chelsea’s only loss in their last 12 top-flight matches, showing how Pochettino could be turning the tide in London.

Despite this, there are still plenty of rumours regarding a change on the touchline, with former Blues bosses Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte mentioned as candidates to return to the club. Meanwhile, Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi is thought to be a leading candidate, should Chelsea part ways with Pochettino, who recently said when asked about his future once again:
"I think enough is enough. All the managers need time to translate their ideas and their philosophy. More when the team is like this squad is. We need to have time. It's not my decision.
"It's difficult to see every single week that I'm under scrutiny and I'm under judgement. But it's not my decision to be here or not to be here. If we want the history of Chelsea, I think it's a lot of work to do. We will see if we have time to be in this way.”
Another update has now emerged regarding a 4-2-3-1 style manager who is currently looking for a new job.
Chelsea in Stamford Bridge talks for Hansi Flick
According to Football Insider in the last 48 hours, Chelsea are still undecided when it comes to Pochettino’s long-term future at the club, and have therefore been discussing potential replacements.
Pochettino’s position will be reviewed at the end of the season, with top-level Chelsea chiefs holding internal talks about bringing in Hansi Flick, who is currently out of work, so could be a stress-free and swift appointment.
Flick left his position as manager of the German national team last September, and before that, was the boss of Bayern Munich. He won seven major honours at the Allianz Arena during his two-year stay, including the Champions League, and was named the UEFA Coach of the Year for 2019/20.
The 59-year-old averaged an impressive 2.53 points per game with Bayern in 86 matches and came in for praise from Thomas Muller in 2020, with the forward saying: "The coach's thumbprint is unmistakable. We all want the same thing, and are pulling in the same direction.
"The last time we were so well drilled was under Pep Guardiola. Every player was allowed to add their own touch to their position based on their preferences, strengths and weaknesses, but the role was always clear. There were no ifs, buts or maybes. Hansi gives us clear guidelines – not options, but specifics. That's why we were able to come back so well after he took charge."
A comparison to Pep Guardiola by Muller is high praise indeed, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Blues firm up their interest in Flick over the coming months.

Talks continuing between Cricket Ireland and ECB to hold three-match series in late July

The prospects of Ireland’s ODI series against England going ahead were boosted on Monday, as their centrally-contracted players returned to training under strict health protocols following government approval.Cricket Ireland has been involved in discussions with the ECB for several weeks about moving the three-match series forward from September to the end of July, and the games look set to go ahead pending approval from the UK government.Ireland men’s and women’s squads will resume training this week, with some players starting on Monday, following deep cleans at the Cricket Ireland High Performance Centre in Dublin, the Civil Service ground in Belfast, and at Bready CC, as well as online education sessions for players and coaches over the weekend.ALSO READ: Ireland itching to play England ODIs despite risks, says Paul StirlingRichard Holdsworth, Cricket Ireland’s high performance director, said that the timing of the resumption was necessary to avoid falling behind England’s white-ball players, most of whom returned to training last week.”We are still in discussions with the ECB,” Holdsworth said. “In terms of getting ready for those matches should the approval come, with a six-to-eight-week period regarded as essential from the standing start of lockdown to being ready for international cricket – particularly for our bowlers – it was crucial that our players did not lose any more time with the England squad already back to training.”In addition, there is also still the outside prospect of the men’s T20 World Cup in late 2020 – so it may still be a big year for the men’s squad. The women’s squad are looking at a rescheduled World Cup qualifier tournament which, if it proceeds this year, will require a lead-up programme.”We have a few players still overseas at the moment, and two who permanently reside in England, but otherwise we expect to have the contracted senior men’s squad involved today. The women’s senior performance squad and the four emerging contracted players will start training from tomorrow [Tuesday].”Ireland’s centrally-contracted players remained on full pay throughout the lockdown – although the majority of their earnings usually comes from match fees rather than retainers – and have been in regular contact with support staff over the past few months.Training will start at an individual level under strict guidelines similar to that followed by England, meaning players will turn up in full kit after registering their temperature before leaving home, use all their own equipment, and have no access to changing rooms or storage facilities.England are likely to be without several important players for the series, with the expectation that they will name completely separate Test and white-ball squads for the series against West Indies and Ireland respectively. The series is also set to be the first in the qualification process for the 2023 World Cup via the new ODI Super League, and Paul Stirling told ESPNcricinfo last month that “whatever team they [England] put out, we know it’ll be a strong one”. England have won their last five completed ODIs against Ireland, a run which dates back to their famous defeat in Bengaluru at the 2011 World Cup.

Manchester United may be about to strike lucky after it emerged that one of their long-term targets is set to be sold this summer.
United need change after Palace humiliation
A heavy 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace underlined Manchester United's need for change on and off the pitch this summer.
Manager Erik ten Hag seems a dead man walking despite vowing to fight on, while there are going to have to be major changes to the playing staff too. As it stands, the Red Devils sit 8th in the Premier League and could end the season without any European football to look forward to next season, after finishing bottom of their Champions League group this time around.
Sofyan Amrabat's loan will not be made permanent, with the Moroccan having proved a disaster at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Anthony Martial, Jonny Evans and Raphael Varane are all out of contract in the summer and will likely be allowed to leave, which will free up significant wages.

The Manchester Evening News claim that as many as 21 players could leave the club this summer in a major clear out, and while this may be optimistic it seems certain that there will be change in defence.

Benfica star set to leave
That comes courtesy of Portuguese outlet Record, who report that Benfica are gearing up for another big sale this summer.
The newspaper [via Sport Witness] claim that the Lions are "planning a significant sale", and have decided that Antonio Silva will be the player sacrificed to continue their transfer policy, having waved goodbye to the likes of Darwin Nunez, Enzo Fernandez and Goncalo Ramos in recent transfer windows.
There has been significant speculation over Joao Neves, but Benfica are keen to balance their books with the sale of defender Silva instead, who is liked by plenty of Europe's top clubs.
Manchester United are named as one of the chief interested parties, with "United having officials watch almost every Benfica match" to keep an eye on the youngster. Alongside the Red Devils, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG are all also named as those keen on the 20-year-old, who still has three years left to run on his £26k-per week contract in Portugal's second city.
His deal has a 100m euro release clause (£86m) but it is unlikely that Benfica will demand that amount to part ways with him, though it is added that they are yet to set a price tag on the Portuguese starlet. Still just 20 and with a wealth of experience under his belt, Silva seems destined for the very top. But he would come at a hefty price.

Celtic ended their 2023/24 campaign in the perfect way possible as they won the SFA Cup at Hampden Park with a late 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon.
Adam Idah came off the bench to score in the 90th minute after a hard-fought match between the two Glasgow teams at the national stadium.
The Ireland international reacted quickest to Jack Butland's fumble of Paulo Bernardo's effort to slot the ball into the back of the net and secure the trophy for the Hoops.
It was a fantastic end to the season for Celtic, as they won the double, but it was not all sunshine and rainbows for Brendan Rodgers as there were some underwhelming performers on the pitch.
One player who he must now ensure is not a regular starter in the 2024/25 campaign, as ruthless as it may seem, is centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.
Why Kyogo Furuhashi must be dropped as a starter
The Japan international was selected to lead the line ahead of Idah for the SFA Cup final but was a Hampden no-show with an underwhelming display at the top end of the pitch.
GlasgowWorld's Ben Banks awarded him a player rating of just 4/10 for his performance, citing his complete lack of impact on the game for Celtic.
He lasted 62 minutes on the field before the manager opted to bring on the Irish sensation, and failed to register a goal, an assist, or any memorable moments.
It was simply another no-show in what was a frustrating campaign from the former Vissel Kobe star at Parkhead under the Northern Irish head coach.

As you can see in the table above, Kyogo was incredibly wasteful in front of goal, with ten more 'big chances' missed than goals, and was loose with his passing, whilst also being a liability in physical duels.
The player who should replace Kyogo in the lineup
Earlier this month, Football Insider reported that Celtic are ready to make a summer offer to sign Idah on a permanent deal and the Irish forward should be brought in to be the regular starter up front next term.
The 6 foot 3 star has been on loan from English Championship side Norwich City and the Hoops must now bring him back to Parkhead for the 2024/25 campaign, so that he can kick on and nail down a position as a starter.

As you can see in the table above, Idah has significantly outperformed the Japanese flop as a goalscorer, with a far better conversion rate, and far fewer minutes per goal on average in the Scottish Premiership.
The Canaries loanee also stepped up on the big occasion to score the winning goal on Saturday, after Kyogo's 4/10 no-show at Hampden, and all of these reasons are why Rodgers must ensure the 29-year-old is not a regular ahead of the Irishman next season.
