Newcastle "optimistic" they’ll seal £20m signing with large up front fee

Newcastle United are pushing to complete the signing of a "brilliant" £20m-rated long-term target in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies are being linked with players left, right and centre this summer, with AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori emerging as a candidate to bolster Eddie Howe's defence. An approach has been made for the Englishman, who is seen as a dream partner for Sven Botman.

Tomori isn't the only Milan player being looked at by Newcastle, however, with fellow central defender Malick Thiaw seen as an alternative to him. Juventus centre-back Federico Gatti is also considered an option at the heart of the defence, which is clearly seen as a key area of the pitch to add quality. The 26-year-old made 30 starts in Serie A last season, proving to be a key figure for the Turin giants.

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori.

Leeds United ace Crysencio Summerville was named the Championship's best player last season, helping the Whites reach the playoff final, and he has been linked with a summer move to St James' Park, being seen as someone who could add quality in wide positions.

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen is considered the top target for Newcastle between now and the beginning of next season, however, in what would be a statement piece of business, considering the England international has grown into a formidable player and is representing the Three Lions at Euro 2024.

Newcastle pushing to sign "brilliant" goalkeeper

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jacobs claims that Newcastle are trying to sign James Trafford with a larger up front fee, with Burnley wanting £20m after rejecting a £16m bid – which included lots of add-ons – earlier in the summer:

"In terms of priorities for incomings, Newcastle want a goalkeeper, and they're still working on James Trafford from Burnley. Burnley want £20million for that deal, and Newcastle's last offer was about £16million – but it was quite add-on heavy.

"So not only would Newcastle have to go up in value, but they would also have to provide more of a guaranteed fee to get that over the line. But they remain optimistic, nonetheless."

Trafford is arguably the standout goalkeeper for Newcastle to bring in as a long-term replacement for Nick Pope this summer, considering his age and potential. He will be viewed as England's future No.1, assuming he continues on his current trajectory.

Admittedly, 21-year-old found it tough in the Premier League at times last season, being relegated with Burnley in the process, but he still received plenty of praise for his performances, including from Ian Wright, who said: "He was brilliant, I was delighted for him. Coming into the Burnley side after a £19m move, Vincent Kompany has shown a lot of faith in him and he made some very, very good saves.

"A lot of the Burnley fans weren’t quite sure simply because of [Arijanet] Muric and how well he had done to come up, but he made some fantastic saves. It was great the way he spread himself, it was very Schmeichel-esque, that was a really good save."

Trabzonspor make contact to sign £45,000-p/w Newcastle star

He’s been an important part of Eddie Howe’s side.

ByTom Coates Jun 27, 2024

To even be compared to Peter Schmeichel says a huge amount about Trafford's ability, given the Dane's status as one of the best 'keepers of all time, and Newcastle would potentially be signing a top-quality player for the next 10 to 15 years.

Um dos destaques do time no empate contra a equipe alagoana, Nene segue no time e recebeu elogios do treinador.

Outscored Isak: Newcastle line up £20m CF who’d make Gordon unplayable

With the start of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign just over one month away, Newcastle United are working toward improving their squad ahead of challenging for a top-four finish once again, having enjoyed a taste of the Champions League last season.

Seventh-placed Newcastle were decimated by injuries last season but still gave a good account of themselves, only missing out on European qualification after Manchester United – who finished eighth – won the FA Cup.

Newcastle striker Callum Wilson

Several signings have been made already on Tyneside but there is a sense that Eddie Howe is hoping to sign a striker, with Callum Wilson being transfer-listed and attracting interest from divisional rivals West Ham United.

Newcastle transfer news

According to Football Transfers – as reported earlier this week – Howe is actively seeking to bolster his attacking ranks and has already made an enquiry to sign Jonathan David from LOSC Lille.

The Canada international is allowed to leave the Ligue 1 club this summer given that he's entering the final year of his contract, with separate reports suggesting that he could be available for a cut-price £20m fee.

What Jonathan David would bring to Newcastle

Newcastle already boast a high-class forward in Alexander Isak but adding another talented striker to the fold could pay dividends, and given that David is only 24, he has many years of prolific service within him.

In fact, despite Isak coming out on top with regard to league form last season – as shown below – it was David who actually performed better across all competitions, netting 26 times while Isak scored on 25 occasions for the Magpies.

As you can see, David and Isak are quite alike, and while some might feel that a more striking variation in options at centre-forward options could provide Howe's outfit with an additional dimension, the Swede's skillset is tried and tested and David could dovetail right into the project.

Given that Isak has enjoyed an impressive attacking bond with Anthony Gordon – the left winger won the club's Player of the Year award – David could find that he too enjoys an almighty partnership with the coveted England international.

Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak

Gordon scored 12 goals and added 11 assists across all competitions last term, praised for his "unbelievable" efforts by Bruno Guimaraes, and his fleet-footed trickery could make all the difference for David as he strives to establish his shooting skills on English shores.

David, in turn, could add to the crispness and fluency, ranking among the top 3% of centre-forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, as per FBref.

The Canada international, who has been lauded for his "mind-blowing" attacking talent by scout Jacek Kulig, would ease the goalscoring burden on Isak's shoulders and then some, but, furthermore, it could provide Gordon with another focal point to build an on-field rapport with and wreak havoc over the coming months and years.

Newcastle should move to seal the deal. For a ballpark outlay of £20m, this could be a shrewd signing indeed that would fuse the Magpies' attacking output for the year ahead.

Perfect for Guimaraes: Newcastle could land "truly remarkable" £51m ace

He’s one of the most exciting prospects in world football.

Kyle Jamieson leads the way as New Zealand pace pack secure 192-run lead

Half-centuries from Faheem Ashraf and Mohammad Rizwan, however, helped Pakistan avoid the follow-on

Karthik Krishnaswamy28-Dec-2020New Zealand’s four-man pace attack has been an unstoppable force at home ever since it took its current shape earlier this year. On the third day at Mount Maunganui, they showed they can be nearly as potent even in conditions without a great deal of help for fast bowling, and even when one member of the quartet has a broken toe.Watch cricket on ESPN+

New Zealand vs Pakistan is available in the US on ESPN+. Subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to the series

But as they have done through this Test match, Pakistan kept the hosts from running away with the contest, with defiant half-centuries from Mohammad Rizwan and Faheem Ashraf reviving their hopes of saving the Test match. Pakistan were 80 for 6 in response to New Zealand’s 431 when the two came together, and when Ashraf was last out for 91 to signal stumps on day three, they had avoided the follow-on.By then, the follow-on question was probably just academic, with Pakistan having kept New Zealand in the field for 102.2 overs in improving batting conditions, and with Neil Wagner having gotten through 21 of those overs – including a 13-over spell either side of lunch – with the aforementioned broken toe. The idea of a tricky fourth-innings chase against Yasir Shah may not have appealed to New Zealand either, given the turn both he and Mitchell Santner have already derived. In a weird way, Pakistan had achieved what they had set out to do at the start of the day, when their top order adopted a stonewalling approach to try and wear the fast bowlers down and cash in later. For much of the day, it had appeared as if there would be no “later”, with the depth of New Zealand’s attack giving the specialist batsmen no respite, particularly with Wagner putting his injury behind him to bowl with his usual intensity. But as the ball grew older and the bowlers tired over a long day – stumps were drawn at 7.28pm with play extended thanks to a series of short rain and hail interruptions either side of the tea break – Rizwan and Ashraf went through a period when bat genuinely dominated ball.Faheem Ashraf takes on the short ball•AFP via Getty Images

When Fawad Alam top-edged a hook to the keeper off Wagner, Pakistan had crawled to 80 for 6 in 59.1 overs. From there until New Zealand took the second new ball, Ashraf and Rizwan counterattacked, scoring 79 runs in 20.5 overs, both batsmen showing a willingness to take on the short ball with the pull.In the half-hour or so before the second new ball was taken, the pitch seemed at its most benign, with full balls coming to the batsmen in straight lines and short balls sitting up to be hit. Ashraf cut and pulled successive balls from Kyle Jamieson to the boundary. Rizwan punched Tim Southee down the ground, beating mid-off to his right with minimal effort. Jamieson, who had conceded an astonishing nine runs in his first 17 overs, went for 20 in his next three. The new ball brought the wicket, but not before the seventh-wicket pair had brought Pakistan to within 45 runs of saving the follow-on. With the four quicks doing the bulk of the work, Santner had barely had to bowl his left-arm spin all day, but he made his presence felt with an outstanding run-out to send back Rizwan for 71, a rapid sprint from deep square leg to midwicket followed by a side-arm flick that hit the stumps direct at the non-striker’s end.Yasir Shah came and went quickly, bowled by a Trent Boult inswinger, but Ashraf played his shots – a lofted drive over the covers off Southee was a particular highlight – rode his luck, and trusted the defence of Shaheen Afridi to drag Pakistan past the follow-on mark. Then, with minutes to go for stumps, a bit of extra bounce from Jamieson found his edge, and his innings ended nine runs short of what would have been an outstanding hundred.Abid Ali looks back after being bowled by Kyle Jamieson•Getty Images

Extra bounce from Jamieson had been one of the main themes of the first half of the day. He had made the initial breakthrough, after Abid Ali and the nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas had seen off Boult and Southee’s first spells without too much trouble while barely disturbing the scorers. Then Jamieson came on and produced two balls that lifted from just short of a length in his first over of the day, getting the first to bounce over Abid’s attempted square cut, and the other to crunch into his glove while he attempted to defend. Those two balls must have been at the back of Abid’s mind at the start of Jamieson’s next over, because he was late in getting forward to defend a fullish ball delivered from wide of the crease. That created a gap between his front pad and his bat, which came slicing down at an angle, and the ball zipped through to knock back off stump.Having made this opening, New Zealand burst through it. Boult, who had pushed Abbas back with numerous short balls from over and around the wicket, got him to push weakly at a length ball angling into him, and found his edge through to slip.It didn’t take long for three down to become five down. Southee, returning to the attack for his second spell of the morning, bowled the ball of the session to send back Azhar Ali: angling in towards off stump, straightening late, rooting the batsman to the crease. There was the faintest of edges through to BJ Watling, which umpire Chris Gaffaney failed to pick up, but Watling reviewed immediately, superseding his captain Kane Williamson. The theme of uncertain footwork continued four balls later, when Haris Sohail failed to get far enough forward to drive a Southee ball angled across him. He edged to gully, and Pakistan were 52 for 5. At this point, a three-day finish didn’t seem inconceivable. By the end of the day, Pakistan were somehow still clinging on to visions of a draw.

South Africa hold off Nida Dar for thrilling three-run win

A 60-run ninth wicket partnership took Pakistan to the brink of a comeback victory, but South Africa managed to hold the visitors at bay

Firdose Moonda20-Jan-2021

Nadine de Klerk defended four runs off the final ball against a Pakistan ninth-wicket pair who shared an unbeaten stand of 60 in a thrilling first ODI at Kingsmead, which saw South Africa eke out a three-run victory. In an error-riddled fielding affair on both sides, Pakistan were all but out of the chase when they fell to 137 for 8 in the 41st over. But Nida Dar and Diana Baig nibbled away at the target of 201 and took Pakistan to within 23 runs off the last two overs, within 16 runs in the last over and within four runs off the final ball. De Klerk, who turned 21 just four days ago, delivered a full delivery pitching on leg stump which Baig could not get it away. For Pakistan captain Javeria Khan, it should never have got that close. “We took the game quite deep. I feel it shouldn’t be taken too deep. We should have shown a lot of intent in the middle phase and finished the game in the 45th or 46th over,” she said afterwards.Pakistan’s chase was slowed after they lost early wickets and found themselves at 42 for 3 midway through the 11th over. Omaima Sohail and Nida scored 29 runs in 81 balls for the fourth-wicket between Sohail was run out. When Sidra Nawaz joined Dar, they managed just seven runs in 17 balls, which meant that Pakistan scored 36 runs from 17.2 overs and fell behind the required run rate of four an over.Dar and Aliya Riaz rectified that with a 51-run partnership that came in 10.2 overs, including an eight-run solitary over from stand-in captain Suné Luus, but it still needed a big push at the end for Pakistan to reach the target. South Africa showed every sign of letting it slip, with five missed run-out chances and several dropped catches, including putting Baig down in the penultimate over. Luus was the culprit again and let the ball slip through her hands after Baig tried to launch Shabnim Ismail out of the park. The usually fiery South African quick was livid, but opted not to let it show. Although she described their performance in the field as feeling “a lot like amateur cricket,” she looked past the Luus drop and “stayed positive for the youngsters.”Particularly for de Klerk, who was tasked with bowling at the death ahead of the hosts’ most experienced campaigner Marizanne Kapp. De Klerk showed immense composure under pressure, especially after being hit for four off the penultimate ball. South Africa will laud de Klerk’s temperament but have acknowledged that their fielding is an area which needs to be improved on ahead of the next match. “That’s one thing that let us down today,” Ismail said.Pakistan also have areas of concern in that department and Nawaz notably put down Lara Goodall on 0, off Baig. South Africa were 29 for 2 then and a wicket could have seen them collapse cheaply. Instead, Goodall and Laura Wolvaardt shared a 55-run third-wicket stand that put South Africa back on track. Fifteen balls after Goodall was dismissed, Wolvaardt was run out, slow to respond to a call from Mignon du Preez and South Africa reached the halfway stage at 89 for 4.Du Preez and Kapp put on 64 together, with Kapp top-scoring with 47 off 59 balls., but South Africa’s tail fell away. They lost four wickets for 26 runs, with Baig in action at the end as well, and scrambled their way to 200 in the last over. They would have been happy to reach that total on a pitch that lacked bounce and on which Nashra Sandhu seemed to find some turn, but made hard work of defending it.The second match in the series will be played on Saturday, in which South Africa will don an all-black kit as part of their campaign against gender-based violence. In this first match, the South African team raised their right fists shortly after the national anthem was sung, in solidarity with injustice and inequality and as a show of anti-racism, as the men’s team did in the first Test against Sri Lanka. Pakistan did not join South Africa in the gesture but ESPNcricinfo understands the PCB assured CSA of their support verbally.

After Calafiori: Arsenal ‘close’ to signing dream Odegaard teammate

After two months away, Arsenal are back, well, sort of.

Mikel Arteta's side made their way to the USA this week for their pre-season tour and will play their first match against Bournemouth in the early hours of Thursday morning, UK time.

Unfortunately, besides the two teenage goalkeepers, Lucas Nygaard and Tommy Setford, fans won't see any new faces for the game against the Cherries, as the club have yet to make an outfield signing this summer.

However, the good news is that it appears as if Italian defender Riccard Calafiori could complete his move from Bologna in time to join the tour, and based on recent reports, Edu Gaspar and Co are edging ever closer to finalising another exciting deal for a Euro 2024 star who could be unreal alongside Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from respected journalist Kiki Marin, Arsenal are now "getting closer" to securing the services of Real Sociedad ace Mikel Merino.

Marin does not mention a potential price the Gunners may have to pay for the 28-year-old, but according to a separate report from GIVEMESPORT earlier this month, it is likely to be around £25m.

At this price, signing the Spanish international seems like a no-brainer, as he could be Odegaard's dream teammate.

Why Merino would be a great teammate for Odegaard

There are two primary reasons why Merino would be such an excellent signing for Arsenal and a great teammate for Odegaard, and the first is his defensive output.

The Gunners played a relatively attacking brand of football at points last season and scored the second-highest amount of goals as evidence of that, but much of their success was built off an imposing defensive unit that conceded the fewest goals in the league, and the Sociedad star could make that even more robust.

For example, according to Squawka, the 28-year-old dynamo won a staggering 326 duels last season, which is an impressive number regardless of context. However, it's made all the more remarkable considering no other player in Europe's top seven leagues could even win 300 duels, leaving the Spaniard in a league of his own.

Now imagine if the Gunners' mercurial captain could focus all his attention on what is happening ahead of him, safe in the knowledge that he has the continent's preeminent duel winner behind him to snuff out any potential counter-attacks; he'd be free to create to his heart's content.

However, it's not just in defence that the 6 foot 2 "monster", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, could be of use to the Norwegian.

In 45 appearances last season, he scored eight goals and provided five assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 3.46 games, an impressive record for a player starting in central and defensive midfield.

So, if he can be that dangerous for a team that finished sixth in La Liga, imagine what he could do for a side fighting for a Premier League title and in a midfield alongside a player like Odegaard.

Ultimately, while Merino is that little bit older than the typical Arsenal signing in recent seasons, he's clearly someone who could add a great deal of quality in both defence and attack and, for the reported price tag, Edu and Co must ensure he makes his way to the Emirates in the coming weeks.
