With Liverpool's summer transfer window bursting into life, the Reds are now reportedly keen on signing a midfielder who starred in a shock victory at Anfield last season.

For a moment, it looked as though Liverpool were going to make it through the entirety of the summer transfer window without a reinforcement. Things have changed this week, however, with Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi emerging as a target for those at Anfield. Pushing on for the Spaniard's signature, Arne Slot could yet get the missing piece that his midfield is crying out for.

In a deal that could see Liverpool trigger Zubimendi's hefty €60m (£52m) release clause, the Reds may well open their summer spending in style. But that doesn't mean that the 25-year-old will be the only name through the door. Recent rumours suggest that those at Anfield could yet turn to further reinforcements before the end of the month.

Names such as Anthony Gordon have been mentioned once again after he initially stole the headlines earlier this summer, and now a fellow England international has been linked with a move to Merseyside.

According to Rudy Galetti for TeamTalk, Liverpool are now keen on signing Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace alongside interest from Manchester United, after the midfielder impressed in the second-half of last season at Crystal Palace.

Wharton only arrived at Selhurst Park in January but has since enjoyed an upward trajectory to earn such links in the space of just seven months, with his club believing he should now be valued higher than the likes of Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo at £100m+.

Of course, Liverpool fans will be well aware of his quality, having witnessed it first-hand in Palace's shock 1-0 victory over the Reds at Anfield last season, in which Wharton dominated.

By the end of the shock result, Wharton had won eight out of ten duels, made six tackles and created one chance in an all-action display highlighted.

With Slot's system using a double pivot at the base of his midfield, signing both Wharton and Zubimendi could be an act of genius by Liverpool if they can afford it. The duo, on paper, would provide the perfect balance, handing Slot a midfield destroyer and someone who can conduct things from the heart of his side. Meanwhile, both players are excellent ball progressers.

Unsurprisingly, the England international has earned high praise from those at Selhurst Park, with Eberechi Eze saying via BBC Sport: "He's an incredible player to play with. Playing with him at Palace, I've got used to seeing the way he plays and understanding him. He's very calm, composed, and a joy to play with. For someone so young, he's very mature and very wise.

Najmul Hossain Shanto’s maiden Test hundred headlined Bangladesh’s batting effort, while Tamim Iqbal and Mominul Haque added meat to the day’s total with two very different half-centuries.Shanto, under fire after low scores against West Indies earlier this year, initially supported a rampant Iqbal during their 144-run second-wicket stand, and then, after his senior partner’s exit for a 101-ball 90, strengthened Bangladesh’s position with an unbroken 150-run third-wicket stand with his captain.Shanto struck 14 fours and a six as he moved to 126 off 288 balls by the end of the day, while Haque was not out on 64 off 150 balls, having struck six boundaries. Shanto did take 38 balls to move from 90 to 100, but it was in the third session, at a point in the game when Bangladesh could afford to focus on not losing wickets.Sri Lanka were more disciplined in the third session than in the first two, when they looked too eager for wickets. Kumara showed off his pace but was quite wayward, while Lakmal couldn’t really decide his angle against the two left-handers. Iqbal and Shanto went on to add 144 runs, the first century stand for Bangladesh for the second wicket since November 2018.Iqbal drove with panache, particularly straight down the ground against the three fast bowlers – and also struck five fours through the covers and played one superb square-cut off Fernando in the second session. His dismissal on 90 was against the run of play. When Shanto did break the boundary drought with a superb cover drive in the 74th over, it took him to his century.He later struck two consecutive fours off Lakmal, stamping his authority with a straight drive and a cover drive. And Bangladesh dominated from start to finish, a rare experience for them in an overseas Test.

Leeds working on signing Georginio Rutter replacement

As per an exclusive report from Football Insider, Leeds are eyeing up the services of Queens Park Rangers gem Ilias Chair, as they go about further strengthening their attacking positions.

With Solomon and Ramazani adequately bolstering the second tier side down the wings, the number ten spot is now a position of priority to add numbers to, considering Georginio Rutter's departure is yet to be addressed with any new faces in through the door.

That's where Chair could potentially come to the rescue, with Football Insider revealing that the West Yorkshire side are set to test QPR's resolve surrounding their Moroccan gem, with his contract now into its final year at Loftus Road.

Chair could fill the hole left behind by the Frenchman packing his bags for Brighton and Hove Albion, as he is known in Hoops quarters to be a tricky menace on the ball for Championship defences to contain, much like Rutter used to be for the Whites.

What Chair can offer Leeds

Leeds fans will be all too aware of Chair's ability to conjure up a moment of magic from nothing, having scored this sublime solo strike last season against Farke's downtrodden troops, on the way to a miserable 4-0 defeat being inflicted on the promotion chasers.

Away from that sickening sucker punch, however, Chair could soon be scoring sumptuous goals like this on a regular basis for Leeds if he is snapped up soon, with the Hoops number ten bagging 34 strikes across 217 second tier games to date in West London, alongside registering 34 assists.

As can be seen, looking at the table above, the QPR star was a lively attacker for many a Championship defence to contain last campaign, with seven goals and eight assists managed from 44 games.

Creating 11 big chances across the full season too, with Rutter creating double that remarkably, the "terrific" attacking midfielder – as he has been described by his boss Marti Cifuentes – could come into his own even more playing for a team fighting for promotion up near the top of the division, as opposed to ensuring they remain afloat in the league.

Chair could end up striking up a terrifying partnership with Manor Solomon in attack, therefore, who will be excited at the potential prospect of linking up with the EFL wizard.

Solomon needs a confidence-boosting season to come at Elland Road after having injury issues dominate his playing days of late, and might well find that he's even more devastating going forward dropping down a division with Chair next to him, having picked up four goals and two assists from only 24 games in Premier League action when fit and firing.

Bagging his own sensational screamer against Leeds in the FA Cup last year, both could make Leeds an even more stunning team to watch in attack, and would make Rutter moving on firmly a thing of the past.

Chelsea have spent £252m on a midfield trio of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Roméo Lavia, with all three joining the club during 2023.

Fernandez (who joined first in January) made 40 appearances for Chelsea last season in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing three assists while Caicedo made 48 appearances last campaign, scoring one goal and registering four assists. He also played a part in the club keeping 11 clean sheets.

Lavia spent the entire season out through injury, missing 43 fixtures through various problems including hamstring and ankle issues, only managing one appearance in the 2023/24 season which lasted 32 minutes.

It's evident the future of Chelsea's midfield looks bright, however, and in Andrey Santos they have another option to slot in before too long.

Andrey Santos' loan spell so far

Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has returned to Strasbourg on loan for the 2024/25 campaign following a successful loan spell there for the 2023/24 season. Santos made 11 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring one goal and contributing to two clean sheets.

The 20-year-old midfielder was signed from Vasco for around €20m (£16.8m) in January 2023, with the deal being agreed the month prior. The Brazilian youngster had already impressed, captaining his youth national team, and earning a senior call-up.

Impressively, Santos has scored two goals in his first two games this campaign, playing 180 minutes and proving to be a key figure in the Strasbourg side.

Santos vs Fernandez & Caicedo

Both Caicedo and Fernandez could be in trouble as Santos goes from strength to strength and offers an extremely complete midfield profile, described as a "superb" box-to-box midfielder by scout Jacek Kulig.

These metrics are from the 2024/25 season so are based on minimal data so far. However, this really shows the strong start Santos has made in Ligue 1, coming out on top in six of the nine metrics assessed.

Santos has scored one goal per 90, scoring two in two so far, while also recording 1.50 shots, with one of those shots on target per 90 minutes. This goal threat is far superior to any of the other midfielders here, who haven't scored yet and also aren't known for their goalscoring qualities.

An area these midfielders are known for is their progressive passing and Santos is right up there for those metrics too, averaging 5.50, bettering the numbers of the Chelsea pair, and only 1.70 less than Rice.

Rice and Caicedo are well known for their defensive abilities, and Santos is actually averaging more tackles than both, with five per 90, compared to Rice's 0.40, and Caicedo's 3.21 per 90.

Mix this defensive output with his passing progression (also making 2.50 key passes, the most of all the midfielders here), and you can see why Santos is a hybrid of Fernandez and Rice, which could spell trouble for Caicedo if his form continues.

The Karachi Kings snapped up Martin Guptill to fill in for Colin Ingram, while the Quetta Gladiators picked Andre Russell to replace Tom Banton, and Islamabad United brought in Usman Khawaja to cover for Alex Hales in their top order.These were some of the biggest signings made on Tuesday night, when the six PSL teams met to choose replacements for the players who will miss the remainder of the 2021 season, which is set to resume on June 2. Tivemos a maior posse de bola e finalizamos mais de 20 vezes, o goleiro deles teve uma noite brilhante com várias boas defesas. Temos agora dois jogos decisivos fora de casa que serão como duas finais. É ter foco total nos treinamentos para que possamos ir lá agora para Campinas buscar a vitória’, contou.

Essa pode ser a segunda vez que o goleiro conquista um acesso na carreira. A primeira ocorreu em 2011 quando defendeu o Náutico, equipe ao qual possui 104 jogos, atrás apenas do Campinense, onde realizou 107. O Avaí é a terceira equipe ao qual o atleta mais vestiu a camisa, com um total de 79 jogos. Glédson atuou em 56 partidas nesta temporada, sendo a mais ativa em toda sua trajetória no futebol. Em 2021, apenas o goleiro Éverson, do Atlético-MG teve mais atuações que ele. O jogador também falou sobre esse momento especial.

‘Me sinto muito honrado e feliz pelo ano que tenho vivido. Estou com 38 anos e consegui atingir boas metas pessoais e coletivas. Como por exemplo o título catarinense quando tivemos a defesa menos vazada, além de grandes jogos na Série B. A expectativa agora é se doar ao máximo para conseguir o acesso. Esse ano vai ser ainda melhor se conseguirmos conquistar esse feito, que é o sonho de todos que estão no clube, bem como dos torcedores. Estamos bem perto desse feito’, disse o goleiro.

Com contrato até 30 de novembro, Glédson é o goleiro que mais tem jogos sem sofrer gols na Série B, com um total de 15 partidas. Sendo também o quarto com o maior número de defesas em toda a competição (89).
