CPL 2021 schedule tweaked to avoid clash with remainder of IPL season

“Cricket administrators must collaborate if cricket is to survive the risks and costs of Covid-19,” says Ricky Skerritt

In a shot in the arm for the BCCI and the IPL, the dates for the 2021 edition of the CPL have been revised; it will now be played in St Kitts and Nevis between August 26 and September 15. The CPL was originally scheduled to start on August 28, and end on September 19, but that changed after the BCCI began talks with Cricket West Indies (CWI) and the CPL immediately after it identified the September-October window for wrapping up the remainder of the postponed 2021 IPL.The revised dates will mean a tweaked match schedule for the CPL, and the challenge for both CWI and CPL is that there aren’t many free days in a packed home season comprising tours of the Caribbean by South Africa, Australia and Pakistan.Immediately after the ongoing series against South Africa, which ends on July 9, West Indies play a white-ball series comprising five T20Is and three ODIs against Australia, which will end on July 24. Three days later, the Pakistan series kicks off with a five-match T20I series followed by two Tests, scheduled to end on August 24.Related

The BCCI wanted the CPL to bring forward the start of the tournament for two key reasons: Firstly, there are several players as well as coaching staff that are involved with both IPL and CPL franchises, and also, the owners of two of the IPL franchises – the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Punjab Kings – own teams in the CPL too – the Trinbago Knight Riders and the St Lucia Zouks respectively. Secondly, the BCCI wanted the IPL-bound contingent to move sooner from the Caribbean to the UAE, where the remainder of the IPL will be played.”Both IPL and CPL are important to CWI, to our cricketers and to fans,” Ricky Skerritt, the CWI president, told ESPNcricinfo. “CWI’s role was to facilitate arrangements for a non-overlapping and smooth transition from one tournament to the next. Cricket administrators must collaborate if cricket is to survive the risks and costs of Covid-19.”The 2021 CPL comprises 33 matches, all of which will be hosted at Warner Park. In April, Pete Russell, the CPL chief executive officer, had said this edition would be open to crowds but attendance would be capped at 50% of the ground capacity.Skerritt explained that the CPL would also soon be finalising the guidelines for the franchises to be part of the bio-secure bubble. “Any bubble-related decisions are made by the local St Kitts health authorities and CPL medical advisors (same as CWI), in the context of the local Covid-19 situation,” he said. “Just four weeks ago, St Kitts recorded community spread for the first time. For over a year, all cases were imported, identified, quarantined, and recovered. The first local Covid-19 (related) death happened just two days ago.”

Signed for £16m, Orta’s "massive" Leeds flop is now worth just £750k

Leeds United supporters will be hoping that the wave of new signings that have entered through the door this summer gel well with the rest of the team moving forward, as a horror start to the new Championship season gets pushed firmly to one side.

Already, the signs have been positive, with new loanee Manor Solomon assisting Mateo Joseph's clever strike to break the deadlock versus Hull City last time out, whilst both Largie Ramazani and Ao Tanaka also impressed from off the bench.

Daniel Farke will just be keeping everything crossed that none of his new buys end up becoming notable flops in West Yorkshire down the line, like Helder Costa ended up being, after costing the Whites an eye-watering £16m to purchase permanently back in 2020.

Helder Costa's career at Leeds

Initially impressing Marcelo Bielsa and Victor Orta during Leeds' triumphant promotion season, the Whites would break the bank to land Costa when moving up to the Premier League, which would then turn out to be a colossal waste of money.

The Angola international would help himself to four goals and six assists from 43 Championship clashes during the 2019/20 season, before finding his minutes lessen in the top flight, with only 22 games handed to him in the Premier League.

By the time the 2021/22 season rolled around, Costa had fallen way down the pecking order, with loans out to Valencia and Al-Ittihad delaying his eventual permanent exit from Elland Road.

It's not as if the Whites dud was on a cheap wage either, with his pay packet during his final campaign with the club coming in at a high £32.5k-per-week, as per Capology, which saw him rake in more than the likes of Wilfried Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville and other key first-teamers in the process.

The expensive former Leeds man did have moments of magic like the strike above against Fulham up his sleeve, but these sublime goals were very rare to come by towards the end of his stint in West Yorkshire, with Costa's time in England finally ending last year when Portuguese outfit G.D. Estoril Praia snapped him up.

His once staggering £16m valuation has since plummeted, however, with the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers attacker's price tag now far less.

Helder Costa's transfer value in 2024

According to Football Transfers, Costa's value has taken a considerable hit, with the ex-Leeds number 17's estimated worth now standing at a meagre £750k.

The 30-year-old forward hasn't helped his own cause by managing no goals or assists from his first four games donning an Estoril strip, as his career continues to peter out even when he's far away from Leeds.

It's not as if this has been a sudden decline for Costa, however, with his value decreasing at a rapid pace year after year, with £8m falling off his price tag just 365 days into his doomed Whites career.

Wolves will just feel glad that they managed to offload their former attacker to Leeds, knowing that he could well have flopped at Molineux instead of Elland Road, after once costing the Old Gold an extortionate £13m in 2017.

It's no real shock that Costa isn't held in high regard by those with associations to Leeds now, but former Leeds man Noel Whelan ripped into the overpriced dud when he was still struggling at the club, labelling him a "massive flop" in 2021 when speaking to Football Insider.

Farke will pray that the likes of Ramazani and Tanaka aren't spoken about in a similar scathing manner at any stage during their stays in England, as Leeds look forward to Championship football kicking off again after the international break is up.

Tricampeão! Corinthians bate o Santa Fe-COL e conquista a Libertadores Feminina

Ben Slater fifty, Dane Paterson five-for keep Nottinghamshire in compelling contest with Warwickshire

All results remain possible despite rain and bad light hampering second day at Edgbaston

A fascinating LV=Insurance County Championship game is evolving at Edgbaston where Group 1 leaders Nottinghamshire closed the second day on 173 for 3 in reply to the home side’s 341.Despite the loss of most of the second session to bad light and drizzle, all results remain possible in a compelling contest between two sides in the thick of the quest for the top two spots.Nottinghamshire seamer Dane Paterson finished with 5 for 90 but shared his side’s frustration at a merry stand of 52 between Bears last-wicket pair Liam Norwell, who was 30 not out from 37 balls, including three sixes, and Olly Hannon-Dalby with 26. They built on the diligence of Matt Lamb’s 67 to assure Warwickshire of a third batting point.Norwell then troubled Nottinghamshire with the ball, taking all the three wickets to fall, including Ben Slater for an authoritative 77.After Warwickshire resumed on 250 for 6, Paterson quickly added to the three wickets he picked up the previous evening when Danny Briggs nicked behind and was superbly caught by wicketkeeper Tom Moores.Lamb reached an excellent half-century from 125 balls with his sixth four, driven through the covers, but lost another partner when Craig Miles lifted Luke Fletcher to point.Related

With acceleration needed, Norwell got off the mark with a straight six off Fletcher but Paterson completed his five-for when Lamb edged into the cordon. That third batting point appeared to be eluding Warwickshire when they needed five runs from the last two balls of the 110th over, from Paterson. But Hannon-Dalby nonchalantly flicked the first to the fine leg boundary and elegantly drove the next to the cover fence. The spectators loved that and thoroughly enjoyed the 40 minutes of frolicksome batting that followed as the tail-enders frustrated the bowlers until Hannon-Dalby edged Liam Patterson-White to slip.Nottinghamshire’s reply reached six without loss at lunch and, after much interference by bad light and rain, 28 without loss at tea. Haseeb Hameed and Slater then added 72 before, second ball after another brief delay, the former left a Norwell offering that knocked out off-stump.Norwell quickly added the scalp of Ben Duckett, lbw, and returned late in the day to end a stand of 78 in 19 overs between Slater and Joe Clarke when the former edged to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess.

Better than Mudryk: Chelsea have a teen who could be their next Hazard

Chelsea has been the home to numerous elite-level talents over the years, with many capturing the hearts of the fanbase.

Didier Drogba was a striker who produced consistent moments of magic in the final third for the Blues, starring in the Champions League final back in 2012 – scoring the crucial equaliser before sliding home the winning penalty in the shootout.

John Terry is another player who’s cemented himself in the club’s history forever, making 546 appearances for his boyhood club over a 17-year period from 2000 to 2017.

John Terry celebrates winning the Europa League with Chelsea

He often featured alongside midfielder Frank Lampard, with the former England international still to this day the club’s record scorer after notching a total of 211 goals during his 13-year stint at Stamford Bridge.

However, in recent years, the club haven’t had as much success as they would’ve liked, with one player standing out as a fan-favourite after his own contribution to the football club.

Eden Hazard’s time at Chelsea

After joining the Blues in a £32m deal back in 2012, Eden Hazard arrived at Chelsea, unknown to many and loved by everyone, after his spell in West London.

The Belgian quickly caught the eye with his quick dribbling and his eye for goal, immediately becoming a fan-favourite at the Bridge.

No goal can quite sum up his talents other than his solo effort against Arsenal back in 2017, where the winger picked up the ball up in the middle of the park, before shrugging off numerous players before slotting home.

Arguably his best performance came in his final game for the club, scoring two against the Gunners in the Europa League final victory, before departing in a seismic £150m deal to join Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Whilst no fan wanted the star to depart the club, it was a move that made sense given his achievements for the Blues, allowing Hazard to go and feature at the very top level of European football.

Since his departure in 2019, the club have failed to sign an adequate replacement for the winger, but new boss Enzo Maresca could unearth his own version of the Belgian in the months ahead.

Chelsea's next Eden Hazard

Mykhalio Mudryk has endured a tricky start to life at Chelsea, only scoring seven times in his 62 appearances following his £89m move to the club from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in January 2023.

Mykhaylo Mudryk for Chelsea

He’s only started one league game under Maresca so far this season, struggling to cement his place in the side following the form of Cole Palmer and Noni Madueke – alongside new addition Pedro Neto.

As a result, Maresca could unleash youngster Kendry Paez upon his move to the Bridge, with the 17-year-old able to make his first appearance for the club on his 18th birthday in May – with the club forking out £17m for the talent last summer.

Despite his tender age, he’s already demonstrated that he’s a bigger talent than big-money signing Mudryk, whilst also being the perfect player to fill the boots of Hazard.

When comparing their respective stats from the last 12 months, youngster Paez has contributed with more goals and assists in fewer matches – whilst also averaging more progressive passes per 90 – demonstrating his talent in the final, potentially following in Hazard’s footsteps.

The Ecuadorian averaged more carries into the final third per 90, showcasing his dribbling ability, similar to that of the Belgian fan-favourite who loved to attack the opposition 1v1. He may register fewer progressive carries than a certain Mudryk but he still evidently excels in that area.

Although it’s still very early days in his professional career, Paez has shown that he has all the abilities to thrive in his career, hopefully being able to transfer his skills to Stamford Bridge upon his move in the coming months.

As for Mudryk, Paez’s move could spell the end of his time at the club, with the Ukrainian needing to demonstrate his talents between now and May to avoid losing his place to the 17-year-old.

Spinners, Avishka Fernando, Bhanuka Rajapaksa give Sri Lanka vital Super league points

India collapse from 157 for 3 to 225 all out in rain-hit game

Andrew Fidel Fernando23-Jul-20211:37

Muralidaran: India played into Sri Lanka spinners’ hands

Sri Lanka spinners ripped through India’s middle order after a long rain break, taking five wickets in the space of 38 runs, to knock the wind out of India’s innings. Then, chasing 227 in 47 overs, opener Avishka Fernando compiled a mature 76 off 98 balls to put Sri Lanka on the brink of victory. There were some middle-order jitters, but the 109-run second-wicket partnership Fernando had put on with Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who hit 65 off 56, had made enough ground to eventually see the hosts clamber to their second ODI win of the year. The winning runs were hit with three wickets and 48 balls to spare, earning Sri Lanka 10 valuable ODI Super League points. They move to 11th on the table. Only the first seven teams gain automatic qualification.India, fielding as many as five debutants, and having made six changes to the side that sealed the series on Tuesday, were, for a change, the team that made the most mistakes. In addition to losing wickets in a heap, there were poor reviews, and at least three dropped catches. They had had one good partnership, between Prithvi Shaw and Sanju Samson, which was worth 74, but none of their batsmen hit a half-century in relatively good batting conditions. With what was essentially a third-string attack on show for India, the bowling lacked the menace the likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and Deepak Chahar provided earlier in the series. Although Rahul Chahar’s legspin caused problems late in his spell, precipitating the fall of four Sri Lanka wickets for 26 runs, they were always struggling to derail the chase. It wasn’t easy for hosts however. It fell to No. 7 Ramesh Mendis and No. 9 Akila Dananjaya to complete the victory. If Shikhar Dhawan had taken a tough chance off Rajapaksa on 32, or if Shaw at slip had held on to a chance off Mendis first ball, there was a chance panic could have overtaken the Sri Lanka dressing room.Earlier, India had been scorching a path to a total in the range of 300 when the rains arrived. They had been 147 for 3 after 23 overs, with Suryakumar Yadav quickly warming to his work, Manish Pandey batting alongside him. But Sri Lanka’s spinners suddenly appeared much more threatening after the 100-minute interruption. Pandey edged debutant Praveen Jayawickrama behind in the 25th over, then Hardik Pandya was given out lbw (upon review) against the same bowler, in the 29th.Praveen Jayawickrama picked up 3 for 59•AFP/Getty Images

Dananjaya then took over, finding purchase with both his offbreak and the legbreak. He had Yadav lbw for 40 off 37, then K Gowtham lbw as well, the batter missing a full toss. Later in that same over, when Rana sent an outside edge to the keeper, India had been reduced to 195 for 8. The spinners took three wickets apiece, Dananjaya giving away only 14 runs off his last five overs, after his first five had gone for 30. Chamika Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera then came back into the attack to bounce out the tail, and have India all out at the start of the 44th over.Sri Lanka lost Minod Bhanuka in the sixth over of the chase, but Fernando played a restrained innings, hitting only the bad balls away, and taking few of his usual risks even inside the powerplay. Rajapaksa lived more dangerously, once inside-edging Hardik Pandya past the keeper while on 20, but also produced some beautifully timed boundaries, sometimes making room or coming down the track to blast the spinners. With Rajapaksa on the attack, Fernando settled into a rhythm of taking singles and twos into the outfield, gradually advancing his score, and reaching his second half-century of the series off the 53rd ball he faced. Rajapaksa brought up his maiden ODI fifty with a reverse-swept boundary off Chahar in the 20th over. He was out not long after, caught at fine leg off Chetan Sakariya, but had made a valuable – if streaky – contribution. The only other partnership of note in the match had been between Shaw and Samson. India had set off quickly during the powerplay, and despite the loss of Dhawan, had been 66 for 1 after 10 overs. Early in the middle overs, the batting pair were intent on putting the spinners under pressure. Shaw, for example, struck three fours in four balls in Jayawickrama’s third ODI over. Their aggression also contributed to their downfall, however. Shaw was out for a run-a-ball 49 when he missed a leg-side shot against Dasun Shanaka, and Samson came down the track attempting to hit Jayawickrama inside out and was caught at cover for a run-a-ball 46.
