Revealed: The £73k-per-week midfielder Arteta dreams of signing for Arsenal

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta personally dreams of signing a “very creative” midfielder, with the Gunners set to be front of the queue for his services next year.

Players linked with moves to Arsenal in 2025

The north Londoners and sporting director Edu Gaspar are already making transfer plans for next year, despite being fresh out of the summer transfer window with £100 million spent on five new additions.

While the likes of Mikel Merino and Raheem Sterling arrived to contribute further forward, the bulk of Arsenal’s new signings were brought in to bolster Arteta’s defence, so the club could look to add more attacking flair in 2025.

After missing out on a deal for RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko, who Arsenal made an offer for alongside both Chelsea and Man United, Arteta chose to keep faith in makeshift option Kai Havertz to lead the line – as he attempts to end their 21-year wait for a Premier League title.

However, that isn’t to say they aren’t monitoring new centre-forward options for next year, with Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram, Sesko and Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres among the strikers linked with moves to Arsenal in 2025.

Arsenal also couldn’t agree a deal for Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, despite agreeing terms with the Spaniard (Fabrizio Romano), but it is believed that Edu could go back in for Garcia – regardless of Neto’s arrival on summer deadline day.

There have even been rumours that Arsenal could be offered Real Madrid star Rodrygo in a swap deal for defender William Saliba, although the Gunners are highly unlikely to accept this as he is a crucial player for Arteta.

Mikel Arteta dreams of signing Florian Wirtz for Arsenal

According to The Boot Room, Arsenal’s manager has a real preference in mind when it comes to transfer targets – Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz.

Germany’s sensation played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s run to the Bundesliga title last season, and is attracting interest from elite European sides as a result.

Arteta is obsessed with the idea of signing Wirtz for Arsenal, as per TBR, and it is believed they will be right at the very front of the queue for his signature next year with the 21-year-old expected to leave.

The £73,000-per-week attacking midfielder won’t come cheap, though, as he will command a price tag of around £125 million.

“Florian is just a huge asset for this team through his carefree nature,” said former Germany boss Hansi Flick. “He’s simply an outstanding technician, loves to play, is very creative, has a good shot, runs hard and is quick. He’s got a good total package.”

Chris Silverwood praises 'controlled aggression' as Joe Root oversees England fightback

“Joe and I reflected on the Lord’s Test and thought about how we could get better,” says head coach

It’s amazing how a few days can change things. After the Lord’s Test, the talk was of England’s longest winless streak at home in 30 years and how Joe Root had lost control in the field. Now, after a thumping victory in Leeds, Chris Silverwood, the England coach, found himself answering questions about whether Root is a “great” captain. To be fair, there aren’t many people claiming Root is a great captain at this stage. While he has now achieved the most wins as an England Test captain, he has also presided over 20 defeats. Alastair Cook’s uncherished record of 22 hovers. What’s rarely questioned is whether Root is the right man for the job at present. It’s hard to dispute he is. And, even as the obstacles have mounted in recent weeks – the months in bubbles, the withdrawal of some of his best players, a fixture list that does nothing to help prepare his team for Test cricket – his calm, good humour and top-class batting have kept England in this series. There’s a lot to like – and respect – about Joe Root. And he did learn from Lord’s. Instead of getting sucked into squabbles, instead of trying to win games with words, Root ensured England retained their focus. Never was this more the case than in the field where, in the first innings, James Anderson was masterful and, in the second, Ollie Robinson and Craig Overton were relentless. It might be relevant that the catching was better, too. England tried to win the game, not a playground fight.Related

Stats – Root becomes England's most successful Test captain

It was a point made by Silverwood as he reflected on the third LV= Insurance Test on Sunday. As well as praising the “character” and “quiet confidence” of a side who suffered such a dispiriting defeat at Lord’s, he credited Root for inspiring a response.”He reflected on the Lord’s Test and some of the decisions he made,” Silverwood said. “He does learn as he goes along and that’s a great characteristic for a captain to have: to reflect back honestly and make a difference. And he’s certainly made a difference this game.”Joe and I reflected on the Lord’s Test and thought about what we could learn and how we could get better. And I think there was a controlled aggression around what they did [at Headingley]: the way they hit the lengths hard, the way they put the India tail under pressure and forced them to make decisions all the time. I think you can be aggressive in a very controlled way and I think they got that right.”Seeing him become England’s most successful captain was superb. It’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a while. He’s in a great place at the moment and I’m really enjoying watching him.”I think he’s a good Test captain. I think he is growing and learning all the time. We saw that last week. I think there’s potential there for him to be one of the great England captains. He’s got the potential to be. If we win in Australia, we can have this conversation again.”Some will scoff at the idea that Root, who has captained England in more Tests than anyone bar Cook in history, is still talked about as “growing and learning” and in terms of “potential”. But he does appear to have found another level with the bat and he has, at times, almost single-handedly kept England in this series. If he can keep improving with the bat, why not as a leader? He may be faced with even more challenges this week. England are understood to be considering resting either Ollie Robinson or, in particular, James Anderson to ensure their long-term fitness. As the pair have 29 wickets between them in the series, the absence of either would be a major blow. Jos Buttler’s availability is currently unclear, too, with his wife due to give birth in the coming days. Silverwood confirmed that Jonny Bairstow would take the gloves should Buttler be ruled out.”What I don’t want to do is break them,” Silverwood said of Anderson and Robinson. “We’ve got a lot of cricket in front of us. The Tests are coming thick and fast now. They’re back-to-back. It is difficult.”These guys are giving everything, every day when we’re out on the field. We’ve got to make sure we’re looking after them, but I won’t be making any decisions or judgments right now until we get to London.”With Chris Woakes and Mark Wood fit for selection, though, there may be a temptation to freshen things up a little. The performance of Craig Overton was also encouraging.”They’re both big lads, physically, and they’ve both got great character,” Silverwood said of Overton and Robinson. “And when they’re out there you can see that coming out for them. They both get into the battle which is great for the players, there’s plenty of energy there. They are relentless with what they do with their skills and I think that sort of physicality and character does give you presence on the field.”An attack of Overton and Robinson might not have been what Root envisaged when he was making preparations for the Ashes a few months ago. But you have to play the hand you’re dealt and, at Leeds at least, Root played it very well.

Arteta handed £42 million striker boost as Arsenal transfer stance emerges

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been handed a real boost in his pursuit of a new striker, as news comes to light on a £42 million star this week.

Arsenal pursue new centre-forward signing for 2025

The north Londoners couldn’t get a deal for RB Leipzig sensation Benjamin Sesko over the line during the summer, with Edu Gaspar and the Gunners recruitment team ending the transfer window with no new centre-forward.

Arsenal made a proposal for Sesko, alongside the likes of Chelsea and Man United, but the Slovenia starlet opted to remain in his current surroundings and further his development in the Bundesliga.

This ended up being hardly the end of the world, as makeshift striker Kai Havertz has started the new Premier League campaign right from where he left off last season – in electric form. Indeed, the German boasts five goals in all competitions already, with his latest coming on a memorable night against PSG in the Champions League this week.

That being said, reports have claimed that Arteta is keen on signing a partner for Havertz up top, and a potential alternative to Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal have Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram on their shortlist, with Sporting Lisbon star Viktor Gyokeres also a target for Edu.

Arsenal are fans of Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran too, which comes as no surprise considering the Colombian’s absolutely incredible start to 24/25, despite being linked with a move away from Villa Park.

Of course, Sesko remains a target for Arsenal as well, with all of these reports of striker interest suggesting that Edu and Arteta are biding their time before settling on a number one target for 2025.

According to reports out of Germany this week, the Premier League title hopefuls could add a new name to their growing list of striker targets – Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush.

The Egypt striker – who’s already racked up seven goals and five assists across eight appearances in all competitions – is turning heads across Europe thanks to his run of scintillating form.

West Ham are preparing fresh plans to sign Marmoush alongside both Newcastle and Aston Villa, as per GiveMeSport, but now Arsenal have been thrown into the mix as well.

Omar Marmoush "dreams" of joining Arsenal or Liverpool

According to Bild, via Sport Witness, Marmoush “dreams” of joining Arsenal or Liverpool – with a potential move to the former in his sights.

His transfer stance will come as a real boost for Arteta, as the 25-year-old fits his profile of a young, versatile forward who can play on both flanks and as a number nine.

Omar Marmoush for Frankfurt.

Marmoush boasts over 30 caps for Egypt and is represented by the same agency as left-back Kieran Tierney (CAA Stellar), so he also has a loose connection to Arsenal through the Scotsman.

Eintracht are apparently ruling out a January transfer, though, so Edu and co will have to wait until next summer to get a deal done. It is believed the Bundesliga side will want around £42 million for a deal to be done, and if he continues in this form, that price could even rise between now and 2025.

Another draw for Arteta will be his attitude, with Eintracht boss Dino Toppmöller praising Marmoush’s “tireless” work rate.

Everton wasted £58m on Goodison star who earned more than Calvert-Lewin

Everton have put their poor start to the season behind them, with a three-match unbeaten run following the dismal four defeats in a row to kick off the year.

As such, the Toffees have clambered out of the drop zone and will be confident that they can put it all behind them, especially with a favourable (on paper) run of fixtures coming up in the Premier League. Sean Dyche will be looking ahead with renewed optimism.

Let’s not forget that Jarrad Branthwaite has been sidelined for six of the seven fixtures thus far, and with the young titan set to return after the current international break, there’s reason to be sanguine.

The defensive issues of recent months have been concerning, but Branthwaite’s return will go a long way toward fixing that for good. All this fragility at the rear has made us think about what it would have been like to have Yerry Mina at the top of his game in this Everton side – unfortunately, the Colombia international scarcely claimed top fitness across his years at the outfit.

How much Yerry Mina cost Everton

Everton signed Mina from Barcelona in August 2018. The towering defender was only 23 at the time and cost £27m, which was a steep figure but seemed worth it for a player of high-standard quality.

He had just risen to fame after his performances on his nation at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, scoring an equaliser against England in the first knockout phase before the Three Lions surprised the globe with a competitive penalty shootout victory.

However, Mina would fall heavily by the wayside on Merseyside after a lasting series of injuries ravaged his chances of living up to and surpassing that initial price tag.

Former Everton manager Marco Silva commented on the South American’s “unlucky” track record on the fitness front back in 2019, having been restricted to a bit-part role in his maiden term, but as you can see, he only enjoyed two seasons of comparatively high availability.

And when considering that he earned £120k per week during his time at Goodison Park, more than starting number nine, Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£100k per week), took home both then and now, the misfire is really underscored.

Combining his transfer fee (£27m) with the centre-back’s total earnings across the five-year period he plied his trade in the Premier League, it can be unravelled that Mina cost the club from £58m in total, or, to put it another way, £760k per top-flight start.

It’s poignant, mostly because Mina – like Calvert-Lewin, who has endured his own injury woes in recent years – could have reached such loftier heights.

Yerry Mina's Everton career

Perhaps the most frustrating point of all this is that Mina is actually an excellent defender. When fit, the Colombian showcased his quality and indeed cannot be fully discredited after recovering his fitness levels at the perfect time toward the business end of the 2022/23 term.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and Everton'sYerryMina

Everton were in an imperilled position, and time was running out to craft a purple patch. He scored two goals from just seven Premier League appearances that year, but started all four of Everton’s final matches and indeed had a vital say in this proud club’s future after bundling home against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the penultimate week to salvage a last-gasp point.

It fuelled Goodison for the finale, which saw Bournemouth fended off and Abdoulaye Doucoure volley in a second-half winner to preserve top-flight status. Mina played the full 90 on his final display and kept a clean sheet, winning eight of his 11 contested duels, as per Sofascore.

Former Everton player Yerry Mina

He encapsulated the phrase short but sweet, putting in some colossal performances to save a club from falling. It’s fair to say that without his efforts, the Toffees wouldn’t have found the verve to avoid the maw of relegation.

Oh, what could have been. Fans will cherish the defender’s best moments, but sadly, they were few and far between for a player who arrived with a weight of expectation and took home a pretty penny besides.

Mark Boucher rues batting failure as pressure grows on World Cup qualification

The balance of South Africa’s side came into focus with results suggesting they were a batter short

South Africa’s narrow defeat by 14 runs in the first ODI, rather than their loss by 78 runs in the third game, is to blame for their failure to win the one-day series in Sri Lanka, according to coach Mark Boucher. His team, who have not won an ODI series since beating Australia at home last March, now lie ninth on the World Cup Super League points table and their journey to the 2023 World Cup could become tricky, with series against India, Australia and England to come.South Africa were 155 for 1, chasing 301 in the first-match, when Temba Bavuma had to retire hurt with what turned out to be a broken thumb. They reached 209 for 2 before losing 5 wickets for 80 in the last 10.3 overs. Had they reached the target, South Africa would have pulled off the highest successful chase in a day-night match in Sri Lanka.”If I look at the series as a whole, we were given an opportunity to win the series in the first game. We were in control of that run chase and we slipped up in maybe a period of five overs. We were unfortunate to lose Temba when we did. In order to win a series in the subcontinent, you’ve got to cash in when that opportunity arises,” Boucher said. “That’s the biggest regret, that we didn’t finish off that first game.”Fast-forward to the third ODI, and they were in danger of being bowled out for their lowest total in an ODI in Asia (which is 110) when they teetered on 54 for 6 but managed to get to 125, well short of the 204-run target. After a strong bowling performance in the series decider, South Africa lost their top four in the first 10 overs, which Boucher called the “turning point” of the game.Related

“It was frustrating because everyone in our top order has had a good knock in the previous two games,” Boucher said. “They’ve spent some time out in the middle; the guys are in good form. On a wicket that is tough, and is going to get tougher as the game goes on, to lose three wickets in the first five overs and four of your top six in the first 10, you’re always going to be on the back foot. Although we kept up with the required run rate the whole time we just lost wickets. And they did bowl well — they bowled smartly. Their seamer bowled with good energy and bowled good areas, backed up by some good catching.”Arguably South Africa also paid the price for a bottom-heavy side, which has as many as seven bowling options (eight if you count Reeza Hendricks, who did not bowl), including three spin-bowling and three seam-bowling allrounders, and appears a batter short. Boucher acknowledged that South Africa shortened the line-up after the first game, when they left out Kyle Verreynne, to include both Wiaan Mulder and George Linde as seam and spin allrounders, but believed that the form of players like Aiden Markram, Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen would see the team through.”We thought with the three spinners coming in, we wanted to have the option of three seamers. That is why we took a batter out and put Wiaan in. Also, our batters are in good form and we also wanted to have three seamers,” Boucher said. “It would have been nice to have another batter but we would have been in a difficult position losing four batters in the first 10 overs anyway. We’ve got depth in our batting with the allrounders; we batted right down to Keshav [Maharaj].”In the end, South Africa used four spinners, including Markram. All of them bowled a full quota of 10 overs, making it the first time South Africa have delivered 40 overs of spin in an ODI and suggesting that as much as their batters struggle in spinner-friendly conditions, their bowling resources have caught up.”It’s a change of mindset. As South Africans, we are used to fast-bowlers, a lot of allrounders but you’ve got to back that up with good spinning options and that is where we are quite strong at the moment,” Boucher said. “We’ve got a lot of depth in the spinning department and guys are really competing. Shammo [Tabraiz Shamsi] is No. 1 in T20s and Keshav has really come a long way and he is bowling at his best. The mindset has changed to try and be smarter in these conditions.”Maharaj has also acted as stand-in captain for Bavuma and though South Africa have yet to confirm a T20I captain, he seems to be the frontrunner. “Kesh has got a very smart brain. With the way he has led the guys on the field, his bowing changes and his fielding positions, he demands a lot of respect on the field,” Boucher said. The T20Is are South Africa’s last outing before the World Cup in October-November and they will welcome back Quinton de Kock, who was rested for the ODIs, Lungi Ngidi, who missed out for personal reasons and David Miller, who had a hamstring injury. However, those matches do not necessarily have the same importance as the ODIs in the greater scheme of things and, having dropped points in Ireland and Sri Lanka, South Africa have plenty to do to automatically qualify for the next World Cup.
