Aston Villa signing who cost more than Duran is now in Turkey’s 2nd tier

Aston Villa dropped out of the top four in the Premier League on Sunday after they were comfortably beaten 4-1 by Tottenham Hotspur in London.

The Villans had taken the lead in the first-half, thanks to a scrappy goal from Morgan Rogers from a corner, and kept that lead heading into the break.

However, a second-half collapse resulted in all three points going to Ange Postecoglou’s side, after the hosts scored four goals in the second half.

Brennan Johnson levelled the score before a brace from Dominic Solanke put Spurs comfortably ahead, with substitute James Maddison scoring a late free-kick to make sure of the result.

Super substitute Jhon Duran was not enough to save the Villans on this occasion, as the Colombia international came on with 21 minutes left to play and failed to register a shot on goal, whilst he completed two of his four attempted passes.

The former MLS star has bailed out Unai Emery’s side on several occasions in the 2024/25 campaign but this one was too big of an ask, as the defence let the team down by allowing four goals to be conceded in just 45 minutes.

Jhon Duran's form this season

The 20-year-old sensation has already racked up six goals across the Premier League and the Champions League this season, despite starting one match in the two competitions combined.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Duran only managed five goals in 23 appearances in the Premier League and two goals in ten outings in the Europa Conference League, which shows that he is already on course to comfortably beat his tally in the top-flight and Europe this term.

The left-footed ace has scored winning goals off the bench against Bayern Munich, Everton, and West Ham United already this season in all competitions, and this shows that his goals have been meaningful and impactful for Villa, rather than being the third or fourth goal in heavy victories.

As you can see in the table above, Duran has outperformed his xG tally in the Premier League this season, which suggests that he has been ruthless in front of goal when chances have come his way for the Villans.

His emergence as a star for Villa should not come as a huge surprise, however, as the club did splash a significant fee of £18m to sign the then-teenager from Chicago Fire at the start of 2023.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

Although, spending a huge sum of money on a player does not guarantee that they will go on to be a success, as the Villans have learned the hard way in the past. In fact, they once spent even more than £18m to sign a centre-forward who struggled under Dean Smith – Wesley.

How much Aston Villa paid for Wesley

Aston Villa won the play-offs and were promoted to the Premier League at the end of the 2018/19 season and decided to dip into the market to bolster their squad ahead of the top-flight campaign.

Smith opted to swoop for Club Brugge centre-forward Wesley and the Villans reportedly splashed out a fee of £22m to secure his services in the summer transfer window in 2019, which meant that he cost £4m more than Duran.

They decided to invest such a big sum of money in the Brazilian number nine after his return of 17 goals and ten assists in 48 matches in all competitions for the Belgian side during the 2018/19 campaign.

As you can see in the table above, Wesley was handed plenty of chances to impress, starting 21 times, but only registered five goals and one assist, as he flopped for the money spent on him in that time.

Two of those goals and his only assist came in the 5-1 win over Norwich, which meant that he managed three goals and zero assists in 20 matches outside of that rout against the struggling Canaries.

In January of his first season, though, he suffered a horrendous knee injury against Burnley that eventually kept him on the sidelines for 57 matches.

The Brazilian, unfortunately, was never able to recover his Villa career after that lengthy absence, playing four more times in the Premier League, and his early struggles before his injury do not mean that he would have been a flop in the long-term without that injury, as the youngster could have adapted to the country and gone on to develop into a star.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

He was then released in the summer of 2023, after loan spells with Club Brugge, Internacional, and Levante, before joining Stoke on a free transfer last year.

Where Wesley is currently playing

At the time of writing (04/11/2024), Wesley currently plays for Karagümrük in the second division of football in Turkey, which illustrates how far his career has fallen since his horrific knee injury.

The £22m signing for Villa should be in the prime of his career, at the age of 27, and is, instead, arguably playing at the lowest standard of his senior career to date, having played in the Belgian top-flight, the Premier League, the Brazilian Serie A, LaLiga 2, and the Championship prior to this latest move.

Wesley-moraes-villa

In the 2023/24 campaign, Wesley made 23 appearances for Stoke City in all competitions, after joining on a free transfer from the Villans, and failed to register a single goal or assist.

The Potters then decided that they did not want to keep hold of the Brazilian titan, who failed to score in 20 Championship outings, and he made the move to Turkey’s second tier earlier this year.

Hopefully, he can get his career back on track and earn himself a move back to one of Europe’s top leagues, thanks to his goalscoring record in the second division in Turkey.

Chetan Sharma: Everyone asked Virat Kohli 'to reconsider' stepping down as T20I captain

Chetan Sharma: Told Virat to continue as captain for the sake of Indian cricket

Everyone present in the meeting had asked Virat Kohli to reconsider stepping down as India’s T20I captain on the eve of the T20 World Cup, chief selector Chetan Sharma said on Friday.Breaking from the recent norm of announcing squads via press releases, Chetan featured in a press conference today to name the ODI squad for the three-match series in South Africa. He was asked if Kohli was indeed asked to not give up the T20I captaincy when he conveyed that decision to the board and the selectors just before the T20 World Cup.He said, he said…

Sourav Ganguly: We had requested Virat not to step down as T20 captain but he didn’t want to continue as captain. So, the selectors felt that they cannot have two white-ball captains in two white-ball formats. That’s too much of leadership.
Virat Kohli: When I decided to leave the T20I captaincy and communicated that, and I approached the BCCI first about my decision, that this is my point of view, and these are the reasons due to which I am doing this, it was received in a very nice way. There was no offence, no hesitation (from BCCI). I wasn’t told you don’t leave the T20 captaincy. Instead it was received well; I was told it’s a very progressive step and in the right direction.

“When the meeting started, it was a surprise for everybody,” Chetan said. “Because the World Cup is upon you and you hear this news, what will be the reaction of a normal person? Everyone who was present in the meeting asked him to reconsider, to rethink; ‘we can talk about this after the World Cup’. All the selectors felt this could affect the performance in the World Cup. It was told to Virat for the sake of Indian cricket to please continue as captain.”It was told to him by everybody available in the meeting. All convenors were there, board officials were there. Everybody said that. Who will not say that when you hear such a news? You will be in shock. What will be your instant reaction? It was a matter of the World Cup. We thought let’s talk after the World Cup. We told Virat the World Cup is upon us, and everybody requested let’s talk after the World Cup.Related

Virat Kohli's biggest gambit yet

Kohli must scrap for his place in the changed world

Ganguly on Kohli's comments: 'Leave it to BCCI'

“But he has his plans. We have to respect his decision. If someone has taken a decision, and he said in the media also, that he was thinking [along these lines] from the time of WTC, but at that time everybody told him to think about it.”Kohli had earlier contradicted similar claims from BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, saying, “I wasn’t told you don’t leave the T20 captaincy. Instead it was received well; I was told it’s a very progressive step and in the right direction.” Ganguly had explained Kohli’s removal as ODI captain as a natural progression once Kohli gave up the T20I captaincy, which, he said, they didn’t want Kohli to give up at that time. However, Kohli’s denial created a controversy, pitting the outgoing captain’s word against that of the president’s.Chetan Sharma: “We told Virat the World Cup is upon us, and everybody requested let’s talk after the World Cup”•AFP/Getty Images

“The main goal for everybody is the same: to keep India on top. We don’t want controversies,” Chetan said. “That is the reason we don’t come out. Our job is to select the team, make sure the best guy goes and plays for the country. When these controversies happen, it makes us sad as cricketers.”I was joking that Ajaz [Patel] has been dropped by New Zealand after taking ten wickets. Imagine if we had done something similar, what would have happened to us.”Kohli’s implication, perhaps, was that he had expressed his desire to continue as Test and ODI captain when he resigned as the captain of the shortest format, but the selectors only told him 90 minutes before the meeting to pick the squad for the South Africa Tests.Chetan was asked why, then, did they not inform Kohli that if he gave up the T20I captaincy, ODI leadership would not be guaranteed either.”If Virat told you about the T20 decision, would you be able to tell at that time that we want one or two captains,” Chetan said. “That wasn’t the right time to do it, we were in the middle of a World Cup. The World Cup was upon us. We were only thinking that the decision should not affect us in the World Cup. We have to cool things down. At that time, we don’t have the time to think about split captaincy, we had only requested that this can be discussed later. Everybody in the board said that.”When you’re in the middle of the series, you can’t always say such things. You decide only when the selectors start thinking about that format. So, when the selectors discussed, and we feel we should have one white-ball captain, this is what we told Virat, and he agreed. We communicated what was on our minds, and we are always ready, 24×7, to discuss anything. There’s no problem at all.”On the decision to let Kohli know before the Test meeting and not when the time came for the ODI selection, Chetan said he wanted to give both the captains time to process the decision. “We wanted to announce it then because we don’t want to disturb them in the middle of the [Test] series [in South Africa],” Chetan said. “We gave time to Virat and Rohit [Sharma] to process it and get it into their systems.”Selectors have [always] communicated brilliantly with the board. There is no communication problem with the team management, with the captain, even with the domestic players. All five of us speak to all the domestic players because that is our job, that is our duty. We told Virat then to give everyone time. And we informed before the meeting. You can tell him only when the selectors have met and agreed. One of our selectors was in South Africa [with the ‘A’ team] so we had to get everyone together to meet.”10:58

Newsroom: Clear communication could have made change of guard smoother

Chetan explained the rationale behind the switch, which was what Ganguly had said too: “When it comes to planning, the selectors were not comfortable with two white-ball captains. So we thought we must have one white-ball captain and one red-ball captain, and he [Kohli] is the red-ball captain. It was a hard decision, but we have to take hard decisions as selectors. Same with the playing XI, you take hard decisions. We took this decision, I know Virat is an important player, and he is going to be a very important player for us in the coming days and coming years.”While at it, Chetan also quashed reports of a rift between Kohli and Rohit. Asked if they planned to have Kohli and Rohit sit down to iron things out, Chetan said, “But about what? Things are absolutely fine. That’s why I was saying don’t go by speculations. We’re all cricketers first and selectors later. There is nothing between them.”Sometimes I read reports about them and laugh. I’m telling you there is such good planning between them about the future. Things are fantastic. If you were in my place, you would have enjoyed watching how these guys are working together aa a team and family and a unit. It’s really saddening when people make up things like that. So please, leave controversies behind in 2021. Let’s talk about how to make them the best team.”Chetan said the selectors were going to resume holding press interactions when required. “We don’t want to hide anything,” he said. “Those who do something wrong usually hide things. We’re not hiding anything.”

Cerny upgrade: Rangers eyeing up move for "immense" star

Glasgow Rangers have a two-week break in the last international window of the year to reflect on the season so far and how they can improve in the months to come.

Philippe Clement will surely have mixed feelings about how his side have performed throughout the 2024/25 campaign, as the Light Blues have been miles off the pace in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers have already lost three games and dropped points in four of their ten games, which has left them in third place and nine points behind Aberdeen and Celtic in the table.

They also failed to qualify for the Champions League, losing to Dynamo Kyiv, and are currently competing in the league phase of the Europa League.

The Scottish giants have had success in the League Cup, however, as they secured their place in the final with a 2-1 win over Motherwell in the semi-finals at Hampden Park.

Clement and head of recruitment Nils Koppen have less than two months to prepare for the upcoming January transfer window, and could use it to bolster the squad and improve the team’s chances of having a successful second half of the season.

Rangers eyeing wing wizard

In fact, the Ibrox chiefs are already reportedly looking at new players who could come in to add to the manager’s options across the pitch in January.

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, Rangers are interested in Peterborough’s Kwame Poku and are one of a number of clubs in the race to land his signature.

The report claims that the Scottish giants have sent scouts to watch the Ghana international in action in League One in England this season, but they are far from the only team to have done so.

It states that Premier League duo Southampton and Ipswich Town, who are both battling relegation this season, and Championship side Burnley have also been keeping tabs on the forward ahead of a potential swoop for his services in the January window.

The Boot Room adds that the 23-year-old winger is also out of contract at the end of the season, which means that Peterborough are in a difficult position where they cannot demand a huge sum of money for his signature, as he could leave for nothing next summer.

Rangers also have an advantage over Southampton, Ipswich, and Burnley as – due to being a team outside of England – they can agree a pre-contract agreement with Poku from January onwards, whereas the English sides have to wait until the end of the 2024/25 campaign.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Clement and Koppen must, now, take advantage of this and strike a deal for the young whiz, whether that is in January or next summer, as he could arrive at Ibrox as an upgrade on current right-sided flanker Vaclav Cerny.

Vaclav Cerny's form this season

The Light Blues swooped to sign the Czechia international on a season-long loan from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg during the summer transfer window.

Cerny has enjoyed a relatively strong start to life at Ibrox, despite reacting emotionally to supporter frustration against Hibernian earlier this term, and has contributed with six goals and five assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

His form in the league phase of the Europa League has been particularly impressive. The left-footed winger has produced two goals and two assists in four starts in the competition, including two goals and an assist in the 4-0 win over FCSB.

Cerny has, however, had mixed success with his performances in the Premiership for the Light Blues, with struggles out of possession and moments of quality on the ball.

As you can see in the table above, the 27-year-old ace has contributed with five direct goal involvements in nine appearances, which is more than one every other game on average.

This shows that, even though he has not been an outstanding creative threat, the Wolfsburg loanee has made a big impact at the top end of the pitch.

However, his duel success rate of 28% and his failure to average even one tackle and interception combined per game shows that the winger has struggled badly out of possession, as he has not offered much defensively and has been dominated by opposition players in physical battles.

Why Kwame Poku would be an upgrade on Vaclav Cerny

The Light Blues must now swoop to sign Poku from Peterborough as the 23-year-old star has the potential to offer more in and out of possession in comparison to Cerny.

Journalist Josh Bunting once hailed his work rate as “immense” and that is backed up by his 1.7 tackles and interceptions per game in League One this season, more than twice as many as Cerny’s per match.

The Ghana international has also won 47% of his duels, winning 5.7 duels per game, which shows that he fares far better than the Rangers man in physical contests, and these statistics suggest that the youngster would be a significant upgrade on the wing from a physical and defensive perspective.

Poku’s attacking displays for Peterborough in the 2024/25 campaign also suggest that the potential is there for him to be an upgrade on Cerny in the final third for the Scottish giants.

As you can see in the table above, the current Rangers forward would need to score six goals and provide four assists in his next six Premiership games to equal Poku’s return for the Posh.

The Peterborough star, who scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in the 2023/24 campaign, has also produced two assists in two games in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy combined, taking his tally to ten goals and seven assists in 17 games.

If he can carry that kind of form over to Scotland then Clement could have a ready-made upgrade on Cerny to take over from the loanee when he returns to Wolfsburg at the end of the season.

Rangers could replace Lawrence at Ibrox by signing De Bruyne-like star

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in a deal for the attacking midfielder.

Rain halts England fightback after Knight and Brunt rattle Australia

The home side slipped to 12 for 2 after England’s captain had got their first innings close

Andrew McGlashan29-Jan-2022

A stirring England fightback was halted by rain in Canberra after Heather Knight’s magnificent career-best 168 not out carried England to within 40 of Australia’s first-innings total on the third day before Katherine Brunt rattled the home side with two quick wickets. It left Australia with a precarious lead of 52 and a ball moving significantly for England’s quicks, but there was no more play after lunch as heavy rain swept through. There will be an early start on the final day with 109 overs to be bowled, but time is now running out to force a result. England are the side more desperate for the four points as they trail 4-2 overall. However, the fact they were even in such a position to consider it was down to the performance of their captain. The ninth-wicket stand between Knight and Sophie Ecclestone was extended to 100, an England record, then No. 11 Kate Cross chipped in with a useful hand until Ellyse Perry’s third wicket ended the innings.Brunt then made immediate inroads as the weather closed in. She found Alyssa Healy’s outside edge with one which bounced and moved away as the wicketkeeper bagged a pair and had Rachael Haynes taken at short leg with the penultimate delivery before rain arrived on the stroke of lunch. It took Brunt’s match haul to seven wickets and carried her to 50 overall in Test cricket.”Brunty’s having a brilliant Test and the way she bowled – the aggression, the skill – hunting Australian wickets, and to pick up those two wickets felt like we could really break the game open, try and get them out for a cheap score and set up a chase so obviously a little bit frustrating,” Knight said. “We are still holding out a little bit of hope…there’s a little bit of time left in the game so we are going to have bowl absolutely out of our skins to try and take early wickets and put the Aussies under the pump. We live in hope.”Knight, who resumed on 127, went past her previous best of 157 made in 2013 and become just the second batter to make two 150+ scores in Ashes Test after Karen Rolton. She had come out with positive intent from the start, unfurling a glorious cover drive, a hook against Perry and a slog-sweep off Jess Jonassen which took her to 150 off 274 balls.”Think it’s my best innings for England, definitely,” Knight said. “The situation we were in, in an Ashes game against probably the best team in the world, so super pleased. I felt quite rusty at the start, they bowled pretty well with the first new ball, but when you’ve played a lot of white-ball cricket and you have a red-ball moving it’s quite hard not to have a little flirt with it, and I did that a few times, but managed to get through that tricky period and when the spin came on I felt a lot more comfortable and found my rhythm.”The way Sophie batted was unbelievable, the team really need her to stand up. She’s got a really sound technique and really chuffed for her that she was able to put in that patient knock…to get us so close to the score. I was looking at a great situation being 70 or so behind, so to get to the deficit we did was a real effort.”It was a frustrating morning for Australia who had hoped to secure a far more substantial lead. When they finally bowled England out it felt a long time since there was talk of the follow-on.Ecclestone was given two lives, both by Meg Lanning at slip, the first coming in the opening over of the day and another when she had 33 but that was a tough one diving to the right. She was eventually trapped lbw by Tahlia McGrath who became the seventh bowler to take a wicket.

Newcastle have decided to extend contract of "excellent" £50,000-a-week ace

An “excellent” Newcastle United player will be offered a contract extension at St James’ Park, according to a new update regarding his future.

Latest Newcastle news

Attacking reinforcements will be needed for the Magpies soon, especially if Callum Wilson brings an end to his time at the club, and Botafogo striker Igor Jesus has been linked with a move.

The 23-year-old is now a three-cap Brazil international, scoring once in that time, as well as netting eight times in 24 appearances for his current team. His spell at Shabab Ah-Ahli has caught the eye the most, however, with 43 goals and 20 assists coming his way in 88 outings.

Aside from Wilson, Newcastle will have concerns about star striker Alexander Isak moving on, and plenty of potential replacements have been lined up if he does find another club soon.

One such figure is Viktor Gyokeres, who continues to produce an astonishing level of consistency for Sporting CP, scoring a stunning 16 goals in just 11 Primeira Liga appearances so far this season. Victor Osimhen could also be an option, despite only moving from Napoli to Galatasaray on loan during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle will hand "excellent" player new deal

According to a new report from The Shields Gazette, Newcastle will give Sean Longstaff a contract extension, agreeing to add a year to his current deal, ensuring he stays put until at least the summer of 2026. The Magpies have decided to trigger the option to extend the £50,000-a-week midfielder’s stay by 12 months, continuing to see him as an important part of Eddie Howe’s plans moving forward.

Sean Longstaff

Retaining Longstaff’s services for another 12 months makes complete sense for Newcastle, considering what a solid and experienced player he has become down the years. The boyhood Magpies supporter may not be the most flamboyant player at Howe’s disposal, but the manager clearly values him, saying last year: “I’m so pleased that he’s got the headlines tonight.

“The two goals were great finishes. His all-round performances this season have been excellent. He’s getting the rewards for what I saw last year. He didn’t play for me initially but behind the scenes, I saw a player that was really committed to his training, really wanted to improve, so I’m delighted now he’s getting the rewards for that.”

Now 27, Longstaff is in the best years of his career, possessing lots of experience but still being young enough to be an important figure over the next few years.

A decision will eventually need to be made, in terms of whether to hand the Englishman another extension at St James’ beyond 2026, but for now, giving him that extra year is a must, rather than losing him at the end of this season.

Newcastle now willing to gamble on signing "fantastic" main target in 2025

He’s a former Premier League star…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 17, 2024

Longstaff’s box-to-box quality continues to be an invaluable asset – he has averaged 2.4 tackles per game in the Premier League this season – not to mention his knowledge of Newcastle and his will to win for them, so this has to be considered good news for the Magpies.

O jogo
PRIMEIRO TEMPO

SALGUEIRO A CRESCER NA PARTIDA
Jogo reiniciado e o Carcará continuou a pressionar.
