Wolves may swoop ahead of Liverpool and Arsenal to sign "phenomenal" ace

As Wolverhampton Wanderers look to turn what has been a disastrous campaign around, those in the Midlands could reportedly swoop in ahead of both Liverpool and Arsenal to sign an MLS talent in 2025.

Wolves transfer news

A 4-1 victory at Fulham looked destined to be a turning point in Wolves’ season. It felt as though Gary O’Neil’s side would simply kick on from there and eventually leave their poor start behind. One 4-2 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth – in which they conceded three penalties – and a 4-0 loss against Everton at Goodison Park later, however, and O’Neil’s job has never been in a more fragile state.

Three points adrift of safety and sat as low as 19th on just nine points, things couldn’t be much more bleak for Wolves, who desperately need to January transfer window to arrive. Whether it’s O’Neil in charge by that point or his successor remains unknown, but there’s no doubt that his side need reinforcements if they want to survive.

With that said, according to Caught Offside, Wolves could now swoop in ahead of Arsenal and Liverpool to sign Gabriel Pec from MLS side LA Galaxy when 2025 arrives. The talented winger has attracted plenty of potential after rising to stardom in America and is seemingly on the radar of Wolves alongside their Premier League rivals as well as Atletico Madrid, Napoli and Inter Milan.

Wolves plot to extend £60k-p/w star's contract as transfer interest grows

Wolves are looking to tie down one of their most important players to a new long-term deal.

1 ByBrett Worthington Dec 3, 2024

It would be fairly ambitious to suggest that Wolves are favourites for his signature. In fact, in their current position, they should find themselves low down on the list of suitors, but what they can crucially guarantee the Brazilian over the chasing pack is consistent game time. With the chance to replace Pedro Neto once and for all, Wolves should go all out for Pec.

"Phenomenal" Pec can finally replace Neto

Whilst Carlos Forbs arrived in the summer transfer window, the Ajax loanee has yet to show the level needed to break into O’Neil’s side or go as far as replacing a player of Neto’s calibre. Without that firepower, Matheus Cunha has of course stepped up, but when it’s not him then it’s difficult to find another player who is capable of dragging Wolves to unlikely victory. Fellow Brazilian, Pec, could change that though.

The LA Galaxy star is enjoying a “phenomenal debut season” according to MLS insider Tom Bogert and has deservedly earned the attention of some of Europe’s top clubs as a result.

The 23-year-old has only continued his form since that praise too, scoring 21 goals and assisting a further 18 in all competitions for LA Galaxy in 2024. Involved in 39 goals in 40 games, Pec is clearly one to watch.

Hales' 62 knocks out feisty Peshawar Zalmi

Irshad’s yorkers put Islamabad in trouble before Azam, Faheem and Dawson closed out the chase

Danyal Rasool24-Feb-2022

Alex Hales launches one over the top•PSL

Islamabad United were bruised, battered, and depleted, but like their opener Alex Hales, they returned with a bang, securing a spot in the second Eliminator. In a humdinger of a contest where momentum swayed back and forth, United sneaked home with three balls to go, eliminating Peshawar Zalmi. It was the returning Hales who spearheaded the win, punishing Zalmi dearly for reprieving him on multiple occasions, top-scoring with 62 off 49. Defending 170, Zalmi kept pegging United back with tight overs and occasional wickets, but the power-hitting depth of United won out in the end. Cameos from Azam Khan and Faheem Ashraf, followed by a six and a four from Liam Dawson off the only two balls he faced ensured United stayed alive in a pulsating contest.United’s inherent advantage lies in the number of players they have who can hit the ball a long way, and so even as the asking rate crept above 10, they always seemed to hold the slight edge. The patchiness of Zalmi’s bowling didn’t quite help, with brilliant deliveries and overs followed up by ordinary ones. Salman Irshad was sensational, particularly in the middle overs when two searing yorkers got rid of Hales and Asif Ali. Conversely, skipper Wahab Riaz endured a horror night, spanked for 52 in four crucial overs that allowed United to squeeze ever closer to their target. With the outcome on a knife’s edge until the last delivery, each side could reflect on key passages won and lost. For Zalmi, Mohammad Haris didn’t find his timing early on, and threw his wicket away, and while Shoaib Malik and Kamran Akmal rebuilt, the run rate never quite had United worried.Asif Ali is cleaned up by a slower yorker from Salman Irshad•AFP/Getty Images

The returning Shadab Khan bowled a sensational first three overs, prising Akmal out just as he began to threaten. It wasn’t until the final five overs that Zalmi properly pushed the pedal, realising perhaps that they were well off the pace. Twenty-one came off the final Shadab over and 62 off the final five as Malik brought up a half-century and Hussain Talat struck 28 off 15.Zalmi might also look back on the chance to remove Hales for a duck off the fifth ball of the chase when Haris missed a colossal stumping chance off mystery spinner Ali Majid. The luckless Majid manufactured another opportunity against the Englishman in the third over, only for Khalid Usman at extra-cover to put it down. Zalmi were tempting fate, and slowly finding theirs was being taken out of their own hands.Aside from that drop, Usman had a near-spotless day, his four-over spell the most economical of the game. Bowling out his quota in the first ten, he had United reined in, allowing just 17 runs and cleaning up opener Will Jacks. When Irshad removed Shadab Khan, the asking rate was creeping up to 10, though United’s repository of power hitters meant it wasn’t a huge problem just yet.Irshad was spectacular through the middle, plugging some of the damage Hales and Azam Khan were inflicting on Wahab Riaz at the other end. But despite three crucial wickets, the presence of Azam and Faheem continued to signal danger for Zalmi, and when the bowlers missed their lengths, they were punished with huge sixes. That kept the game in a holding pattern of sorts right down to the final over, which began with United needing ten. Azam’s dismissal off the first ball was followed, in true United fashion, by Dawson whacking his first two balls for ten.As Wahab Riaz’s dream ended, the veteran Pakistan bowler collapsed to his knees, unable to stem the tears. The contrast of emotions with a jubilant United side, somehow still alive in a tournament where fate was almost conspiring to kill them off, was both jarring and touching. It was a game full of flaws from both sides, but that almost made it perfect.

Organisers have abandoned the first day of play in the Sheffield Shield match between Queensland and South Australia at the Gabba due to Brisbane’s floods. The match was scheduled to begin on Wednesday but Cricket Australia, Queensland Cricket and Stadiums Queensland agreed play on the first day would not be possible. The game will now be a three-day contest starting on Thursday with extended hours for the remainder of the match.”Considering the amount of rain that has fallen, Dave (Sandurski, Gabba curator) and his team have done amazing things to have a venue potentially ready to play,” Queensland Cricket chief executive Terry Svenson said. The match is the fifth-placed Bulls’ penultimate game of the Shield campaign ahead of a clash with Tasmania in Hobart from March 23. The Redbacks are last on the ladder without a win from their six matches. Both sides are depleted due to Australia squad members being away on the tour of Pakistan. Queensland are missing Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Mark Steketee while South Australia are without Travis Head and Alex Carey, with Henry Hunt set to captain South Australia for the first time.

Now worth just £3m: Everton must brutally get rid of Dyche’s flop

Recruitment has been rather hit-and-miss at Goodison Park over these past several years. Everton know that improvements are needed, and will hope that The Friedkin Group will turn the ship around when they complete their purchase of Farhad Moshiri’s 94% stake.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

One of the most pressing concerns, aside from Sean Dyche’s future as first-team manager, has got to be the club’s attacking threat – or lack thereof.

Everton's attack needs a rehaul

Everton have been one of the least effective attacking outfits in the Premier League this season, and though Dominic Calvert-Lewin isn’t scoring, having blanked across eight matches, Dyche’s pragmatic tactics have failed to inspire synergy or success from a frontal standpoint.

Everton desperately need to conjure up some fresh inspiration from somewhere, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be from Calvert-Lewin. Beto carried a threat of sorts, but he too doesn’t emit the kind of aura that suggests he will shape into a free-scoring phenomenon.

Everton actually signed an up-and-coming talent over a year ago to bolster their frontline, but Youssef Chermiti’s time at Goodison Park has been ineffective thus far.

TFG should brutally cash in on Youssef Chermiti

Chermiti had surgery on a foot injury at the start of August, just before the start of the 2024/25 season, in what has proved to be a detrimental blow to his chances of making a positive impression at senior level so far.

Last term, Chermiti completed 20 appearances for Everton but only started once in the Premier League and failed to score a single goal – though he did pick up four yellow cards. Though he was viewed as a project-type signing, the £15m fee paid to Sporting Lisbon should provide Dyche with a greater return.

Already, the 20-year-old striker is showing little promise of cementing a starring role in Everton’s first team in the years to come, though fans will hold onto hopes of an exciting return to action soon, with Dyche confirming that he is back in training.

When Chermiti joined the Merseysiders, he claimed that it was “a big move for me,” but now he faces a fight to even secure a future at the club, with Everton’s decision to sign Armando Broja from Chelsea in the summer something that could thwart him in establishing himself.

As per Football Transfers, the Portuguese talent, who stands at 6 foot 4, is currently worth just £3m, marking a steep decline from the fee that was forked out for his services only one year ago.

yussef-chermiti-transfer-gossip-sporting-everton-dyche-dominic-calvert-lewin

Let’s see how it pans out, but Everton may well have put Chermiti on the backseat already, with his dropped market value hardly an indicator of things going well.

With the January transfer window looming, it remains to be seen whether a loan exit could be on the cards in the New Year, with journalist Chris Beesley predicting back in September that the struggling striker may “now be loaned out in the second half of the season”, when he is back to full fitness.

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Whatever occurs in 2025, the £15m signing certainly needs something to help kickstart his floundering Toffees career.

Everton need to sell a star who Richarlison thought was "like Ronaldo"

Regardless of Sean Dyche’s fate, this Everton star needs to be sold in January.

Ricky Ponting: Rishabh Pant's journey as captain could be like Rohit Sharma's

Says that Pant’s “learning experiences” from the last year and a half will make him a “better leader and person”.

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-20221:05

Ponting discusses Pant’s leadership trajectory

Ricky Ponting had not even realised it. Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant may not have thought of it as well. And it may not have struck people in Indian cricket either. That Ponting, the former Australia captain who had several intense duels with India captains during his playing days, has already groomed two future India captains in the IPL.Well before taking over as the head coach of Delhi Capitals (then Daredevils) in 2018, Ponting had coached Mumbai Indians and had chaperoned Rohit’s captaincy from 2013 to 2016, to help the franchise to two IPL titles, in 2013 and 2015. Rohit has since become one of the top all-format players for India and has taken over the India captaincy in at least two formats.Related

What a ten-team, four-venue IPL might look like

Nortje cleared of 'serious injury', to continue rehab with Delhi Capitals

Pant is now in a very similar situation. A vital all-format player for India, in his early 20s, a new IPL captain, and a possible future India captain, also being groomed by Ponting.”I hadn’t thought about that actually but they are actually quite similar,” Ponting said of the Rohit-Pant comparison a day before the two teams he has coached face each other in IPL 2022. “When Rohit took over at Mumbai, he was quite a young man as well, and had started out in his international cricket. He was probably very similar [in age], I’m not sure how old he was but he would have been 23-24, similar to what Rishabh is here at the Delhi Capitals.”To tell you honestly, they’re quite similar people. I know they are great mates and they talk all the time and they’re probably exchanging things about leadership and captaincy along the way as well. Rohit probably doesn’t want to give too many secrets away because we’re going to play against him in a couple of days’ time (laughs). I think there’s every opportunity for Rishabh’s journey to be similar to Rohit Sharma’s. He’s a young captain of a successful franchise and growing on a daily basis and hopefully Rishabh can have the same sort of success Rohit’s had at the Mumbai Indians. And then with some experience in a role like this in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, I’ve got no doubt in the years to come there’s every chance that Rishabh could be an international captain. No doubt about it.”The manner in which both Rohit and Pant were handed their IPL captaincies was also similar; Rohit took over from Ponting mid-season in 2013 and Pant was handed over the baton last IPL after Shreyas Iyer picked up a shoulder injury.Ponting is now in his fifth season with Capitals, and he has overseen Pant’s evolution not just as captain but as a player and individual too, after Pant was bought by Daredevils in the 2016 auction. Since then, Pant has played 84 games for them to amass 2498 runs while averaging 35.18 and striking at 147.46, and has quickly gone up the ladder to take over as a long-term captain.Ponting said the “learning experiences” Pant has had in the last 12-18 months with India and in the IPL will make him a “better leader and person”.”His evolution – not just the last one year, this is my fifth season now at the Delhi Capitals – and his evolution as a player and as a person has been quite dramatic,” Ponting said. “Last couple of years with some more responsibility in and around the Indian team, and captaining the Delhi Capitals last season, there’s a lot of learning experiences for him through the last 12-18 months for him which will keep helping him become a better leader and person on a daily basis. I know Rishabh really well, and that’s what he talks about all the time, trying to find ways to improve.”There’s no doubt that his maturity in the last 12-18 months with his play and also with his leadership and captaincy has been outstanding. It’s a big part of my job as well to try and help and guide him and push Rishabh in the right direction where I can. But saying that, he’s got a very good grasp on what leadership is all about because he’s been in successful teams and he’s been under strong leaders in the past. It’s up to me, if there’s anything I can help him with, I’ll do it along the way.”Ponting will now hope he can help Pant lift the IPL trophy two months from now and cheekily ask the BCCI for a ‘captaincy-grooming bonus’ they never knew they owed him.
