Arne Slot’s Liverpool had to sit out this set of Premier League fixtures, as Storm Darragh called off what could have been a tempestuous Merseyside Derby in itself if it wasn’t for a late postponement.
Everton would have been up for the contest, with it being the last league fixture between the fierce rivals at Goodison Park, whilst the Reds would have equally been raring to go in the tasty affair after a disappointing 3-3 draw away at Newcastle United.
But, the ultimately got in the way, which will now have given Slot time to ponder on how the season is currently unfolding, with his side sitting pretty at the top of the standings with a sublime 35 points.
Still, league titles aren’t wrapped up in December, with the Dutchman wanting to guard against complacency creeping in, which did stunt his high-flying side at St James’ Park.
Main Liverpool underperformers vs Newcastle
Fresh off the back of convincingly beating Manchester City 2-0, Liverpool would have made the trip up the Toon brimming with confidence, only to be rudely met by an inspired Newcastle home display.
The likes of Darwin Nunez and Caoimhin Kelleher stood out in particular as poor performers in the back-and-forth 3-3 draw, with the Uruguayan managing just 25 touches of the ball alongside missing two big chances, whilst the Reds number 62 had to fish the ball out of his goal a depressing three times.
Thankfully for Slot’s men, Mohamed Salah continues to come up trumps like a man possessed for the Merseyside giants, with his two strikes in the barnstorming affair undoubtedly helping the away side salvage something from the game.
That said, he didn’t get too much help from his attacking colleagues; notably Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.
Anthony Gordon vs Mohamed Salah
Indeed, the ex-Feyenoord boss would have been let down somewhat by the opposing flank, as Gakpo had a quiet night on Tyneside, alongside Luis Diaz registering zero shots on target during his short cameo in for the 25-year-old.
Whilst the game at Everton was called off, a promising Liverpool youngster starred out on loan once more down the wings, with the tricky and quick attacker possessing the potential to be the club’s next Sadio Mane when he returns away from the options currently available.
Liverpool have found their next Sadio Mane
The starlet in question here is Ben Doak, who is lighting up the Championship this season for his loan employers in Middlesbrough.
Ben Doak for Liverpool
Whilst he only has one goal next to his name so far, the Scotsman has still been operating as a creative menace down the right channel, with a stunning five assists picked up when slaloming forward with venom for Michael Carrick’s outfit.
He did nearly score a sumptuous solo strike last time out versus Burnley, as one of his three successful dribbles nearly resulted in James Trafford picking the ball out of his own net, but Carrick will just be overjoyed he has the 19-year-old as his temporary disposal before he potentially explodes into life back at Anfield.
His blistering runs forward donning a Liverpool shirt could see him become the club’s next Mane if everything slots into place nicely, with the Senegalese attacker going on to become a modern-day great having chipped in with goals and assists aplenty.
Mane notched up a ridiculous 120 goals in total for Liverpool across 269 games, with Doak aiming to replicate Mane’s highs when given a chance back at Slot’s men when this formative loan stint is up.
Of course, it’s unrealistic to expect the 19-year-old to be instantly amazing for a team routinely near the top of the Premier League pile, but he has already been branded as potential “world-class” talent by ex-Scotland manager Craig Levein.

This was off the back of his heroics with Scotland, who he has one assist for in Nations League action, but he has also proven himself to be a captivating watch in the Championship too, with his electric showing for Boro at the end of November versus Hull City gaining him various plaudits at the Riverside Stadium.
Whilst Gakpo and Diaz are already at the calibre of the Premier League, Doak does feel like the next big thing to come out of Anfield who might well become a star on the same level as Mane over time.
He’s tricky, diminutive, exciting and capable of finding the net; it certainly sounds a lot like the Senegalese, doesn’t it?

Actor, comedian and cricket lover to take over from Clare Connor in October
ESPNcricinfo staff04-May-2022
Stephen Fry has been named as the next President of MCC•MCC
Stephen Fry, the actor and comedian, has been named as the next President of Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).Fry, a lifelong cricket supporter, is a patron of the MCC Foundation, and delivered a memorable MCC Cowdrey Lecture last year. He was nominated for the role by the current President, Clare Connor, and will take over when her term ends on October 1.”I am honoured and proud to be nominated as the next President of MCC,” Fry said. “It is a club that is known throughout the world for what it represents in the game and to be gifted the opportunity to perform this role is truly humbling.”I thank Clare for this incredible opportunity and I look forward to supporting her as President Designate over the summer before commencing my own innings in the autumn.”Fry is an English actor, screenwriter, author, playwright, journalist, poet, comedian, television presenter and film director. He is also an advocate for mental health and has been President of Mind, the mental health charity, for over a decade. An MCC Member since 2011, he is widely known to be a lover of cricket and delivered the 20th MCC Cowdrey Lecture in November 2021. As only the second non-cricketing personality to give the Lecture, following Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 2008, his impassioned speech was both powerful and memorable, and included the suggestion that Yorkshire had exuded a “mephitic stink” during their handling of the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.”When he [Rafiq] said today that he didn’t want his son to go anywhere near cricket my heart fell to my boots,” Fry said during his speech. “But actually that simple statement crystallises everything, it gives us a clear human image that says it all. It is a rallying cry.”Unless all our nation’s sons and daughters with the talent and desire to have a life in cricket are confident that cricket will want to have a life with them, the spirit of cricket, its very flame, will flicker and go out. Let’s dedicate ourselves to ensuring that that will never happen.”Connor added: “I am thrilled to be able to announce Stephen as my successor. He has a deep love and care for cricket and will be a wonderful ambassador for MCC. The Cowdrey Lecture he delivered last year was inspiring and showed the extent to which he understands the challenges and opportunities that both MCC and cricket face. He will bring a wealth of experience to the role and I hope he thoroughly enjoys his year.”Fry’s appointment was ratified at MCC’s Annual General Meeting at Lord’s on Wednesday, the first in the club’s 235-year history to be held in a hybrid format, with members attending in person at the ground as well as online.

Here’s a detailed look at Arsenal’s top 10 sales… 10 Emmanuel Adebayor £25m to Man City, 2009
When Manchester City began to flex their newfound financial muscle, Arsenal were one of the clubs they visited most often to pick off talent.
Adebayor’s £25m switch to Eastlands was swiftly followed by the capture of Kolo Toure, who cost the Citizens £14m. Of course, Adebayor burned what bridges he had left with Arsenal fans when he celebrated in front of them in their first meeting just weeks later.
9 Samir Nasri £25m to Man City, 2011
samir-nasri-arsenal-transfer-manchester-city
Manchester City came calling again in the summer of 2011, as Samir Nasri was the latest to tread that particular path out of Arsenal. In fairness to the Frenchman, he won trophies in his first season, vindicating his move, which followed a year of dazzling performances in north London.
Another £25m was headed Arsenal’s way as a result, with the Gunners welcoming the likes of Gervinho that summer.
8 Joe Willock £25m to Newcastle, 2021
Midfielder Joe Willock made a £25m move to Newcastle United in 2021 after a successful loan spell at St James’ Park.
Soon after his loan arrival, Willock scored in seven successive Premier League games, matching Alan Shearer’s Magpies record, which resulted in the Toon spending big and handing the player a six-year deal.
7 Aaron Ramsdale £25m to Southampton, 2024
Arsenal's Aaron Ramsdale
Aaron Ramsdale ended three years at Arsenal by sealing a summer switch to Southampton in the summer of 2024. The Saints paid an initial £18m for the goalkeeper, with the fee potentially rising to £25m.
Whether conditions for that are met remains to be seen, though one suspects that the south coast club’s struggles in the Premier League cast doubt over Arsenal getting full whack for their former player.
6 Eddie Nketiah £30m to Crystal Palace, 2024
Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah
Striker Eddie Nketiah spent seven years as a professional with the Gunners after coming through the academy, having also spent six months on loan with Leeds United in 2019.
Nketiah made more than 100 first-team appearances for Arsenal, but could never nail down a regular first-choice starting spot, resulting in an eye-catching £30m exit across London to join Crystal Palace in 2024.
5 Alex Iwobi £34m to Everton, 2019
Continuing the theme of academy players leaving Arsenal is Alex Iwobi, who joined Everton for £34m in 2019.
The Nigeria international made 149 appearances for the Gunners, contributing to 39 goals, the last of which came in the Europa League final defeat to Chelsea in 2019.
4 Emile Smith Rowe £34m to Fulham, 2024
Emile Smith Rowe playing for Arsenal
After falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta and struggling with injuries, Emile Smith Rowe sealed a permanent Arsenal exit in 2024, becoming Fulham’s most expensive signing in the process.
The attacking midfielder was tipped for big things after coming through the Gunners academy and has started brightly at Craven Cottage.
3 Cesc Fabregas £35m to Barcelona, 2011
Iconic midfielder Cesc Fabregas swapped Barcelona for Arsenal as a teenager in 2003 and quickly broke into Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans in north London.
The Spaniard would go on to spend nine years in an Arsenal shirt before returning to the Nou Camp in a £35m deal. To make things worse for the Gunners, Fabregas would move back to England in 2014, this time with Chelsea.
10 memorable Cesc Fabregas moments
Following Cesc Fàbregas’ retirement, Football FanCast brings you 10 memorable moments from the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Barca midfielder’s career.
ByMark Marston Jul 3, 2023 2 Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain £35m to Liverpool, 2017
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s move to Liverpool in 2017 is one of Arsenal’s most expensive departures.
Signed from Southampton in 2011, Oxlade-Chamberlain won three FA Cups and three Community Shields with the Gunners, making 198 appearances in total.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool came knocking and forked out a £35m fee for the Englishman, who would go on to win the Premier League and Champions League at Anfield.
1 Folarin Balogun £35m to Monaco, 2023
Currently top of the charts as Arsenal’s record sale is Folarin Balogun, who joined Monaco in 2023 after failing to break through to the first team from the Arsenal academy.
Balogun impressed in France with Reims the season before to catch Monaco’s attention, with the attacker penning a deal until 2028 with the Ligue 1 side.
His £35m switch is all the more impressive from the Gunners’ perspective given he was hardly in the first-team picture at the time of his departure.
Manchester United put in a fantastic performance to draw 2-2 away to arch-rivals and Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The Red Devils worked incredibly hard throughout the game, going toe to toe with the Merseysiders and ensuring they put their poor run of form behind them.
Despite no goals coming in the first half, it was still an action-packed opening 45 minutes. Rasmus Hojlund had the golden chance of the half, but his shot was straight at Red’s goalkeeper Alisson.
Despite the Dane’s miss, United still took the lead through a ferocious Lisandro Martinez strike. The unexpected goalscorer lashed home his shot from inside the corner of the Liverpool box. However, United’s lead did not last long. Cody Gakpo drew things level with a similar strike just seven minutes later.
The home side, roared on by the Anfield faithful, took the lead from the penalty spot after the ball struck the arm of Matthijs de Ligt. Mohamed Salah made no mistake from 12 yards out. United, however, had their reply, through who else, but Amad Diallo. The young Ivorian met Alejandro Garnacho’s cross to equalise for the visitors.
Despite chances at the end for both sides, the game ended as a memorable 2-2 draw. There were certainly standout performances for Ruben Amorim’s side, with Harry Maguire performing particularly well.
Harry Maguire’s stats vs. Liverpool
Just one day after it was confirmed that Maguire’s one-year contract extension would be activated by the Red Devils, he put in a colossal performance against the club’s biggest rivals at Anfield.
Dealing with the likes of Salah, Gakpo and Luis Diaz is a difficult task, but one that Maguire handled admirably.
He flew into tackles fearlessly and was dominant in the air. At the death, he had a chance to win it, set up well by Joshua Zirkzee, However, the ball bobbled, and the defender could not find the back of the net. That was perhaps his only mistake.
Nevertheless, it was a performance that the Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst deemed worthy of a 7/10 rating. The United correspondent explained that it was the United number 5’s “best performance for United at Anfield”.
Indeed, the stats via Sofascore back up that statement. The 31-year-old completed seven clearances against Arne Slot’s side, making four interceptions and winning three duels. He was a rock at the back.
As good as the Red Devils defender was, there was someone who was perhaps even better. That man was the United captain, Bruno Fernandes.
Bruno Fernandes’ stats vs. Liverpool
Fresh from a suspension which meant he missed United’s last outing against Newcastle United, Fernandes really stood up for the count against Liverpool. It was a completely dominant display, described as an “utterly inane” performance by Sky Sports presenter Joe Thomlinson.
He was everywhere, creating chances from all over the pitch, and putting in some fantastic challenges off the ball. He was rewarded with a fantastic assist for Martinez, a lovely reverse pass after some good tight-space dribbling. He also played Garnacho in behind the Reds’ defence which led to Amad’s goal.
The stats certainly show just how good Fernandes was on Sunday. He had 88 touches of the ball, creating four chances along the way. The Red Devil’s skipper also won a whooping 11 duels, showing just how good he was without the ball.

Luckhurst was full of praise for the man lovingly dubbed the Portuguese Magnifico by United fans. He explained Fernandes put in an “influential performance”, and praised him for how he “supplemented the midfield” for his work off the ball.
Fernandes, Maguire and their United teammates will be hoping to carry this momentum into their next outing. They face a tough trip away to Arsenal in the FA Cup third round next weekend.

Jos Buttler to take charge amid ongoing fitness doubts over England white-ball captain
Matt Roller22-Jun-2022

Eoin Morgan will sit out of England’s third ODI against the Netherlands on Wednesday due to a “tight groin” as concerns over his form and fitness continue to dominate the narrative around England’s white-ball sides. Jos Buttler will take over as captain.Morgan finishes the series with no runs and two dismissals from the eight balls he faced and while it is hardly unprecedented for him to rest himself for part of a series, his fitness has become a mounting issue this year.He said at the start of this tour that he would rest himself for at least some of England’s international fixtures this summer due to his concerns about playing games on consecutive days, something he has made a point of avoiding in the T20 Blast for Middlesex after suffering a thigh injury during the T20I series in Barbados earlier this year after playing back-to-back games.Morgan also said that he hoped to play all three games in the series “if possible” but his right groin, which he tweaked while playing for Middlesex last month and felt during Sunday’s second ODI, has left him unable to do so. He missed their optional training session on Tuesday and was ruled out of the third ODI on the morning of the game.England did not pick a spare batter in their squad so one of their allrounders – Moeen Ali or Sam Curran – will bat in the top six. David Payne, the Gloucestershire left-arm seamer, also makes his international debut.Morgan has hit a single half-century – against Sri Lanka in July 2021 – in the last 18 months across both international and domestic cricket in both 50-over and T20 cricket and his back-to-back ducks have furthered the impression that his latest form slump could be terminal. He insisted that he can “still contribute to a World Cup win” and intends to lead the side in the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year but has admitted that leading England’s defence of their 50-over title in India in 2023 feels “a long way away”.Buttler, his heir apparent, will be captaining in his ninth ODI having regularly deputised in Morgan’s absence over the past six years.
