With Dubravka’s future far from certain, however, Newcastle continue to look at options from across Europe, and one goalkeeper who has attracted the interest of a number of Premier League clubs is Lille’s Lucas Chevalier.

French news outlet Sports Zone, relayed by Get Football News France has since gone on to state that Newcastle are “showing interest” in Chevalier, alongside the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City.

Sports Zone indicate that a deal is more likely to happen in the summer than January, at which point a number of top clubs are set to battle it out for the 23-year-old’s signature.

The goalkeeper has enjoyed a very impressive first half of the season in Ligue 1, with former Newcastle man Remy Cabella describing him as “one of the best goalkeepers in the world right now.”

There is every sign the Frenchman could be a better addition to the squad than Grabara, given that he has outperformed the Pole on a number of key metrics over the past year.

However, Trafford has also been solid between the sticks for Burnley during that time period, and the Magpies have confidence that a deal to sign the Burnley keeper could be possible this month.

As such, with clubs from across Europe queuing up for Chevalier, it may be difficult to get a deal done this summer, and Newcastle may be better off pursuing a deal for Trafford.

Pep Guardiola is tasked with rebuilding the Man City defence, with it recently being revealed that captain Kyle Walker wants to leave the club, having been left out of the squad for the 8-0 demolition of Salford City.

The Sky Blues are particularly keen on a new centre-back, having a £33.5m bid accepted for Lens’ Abdukodir Khusanov, and the deal is now nearing completion.

Guardiola is keen to make multiple additions this month, with progress being made for Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, whereas Palmeiras’ defensive gem Vitor Reis is another key target.

City’s opening bid for Reis was knocked back by the Brazilian club, but they remain undeterred, with journalist Ben Jacobs revealing they are optimistic about being able to get a deal over the line.

As such, Man City have taken immediate action to try and get a deal done, with journalist Andre Hernan taking to X to provide an update on the transfer pursuit, saying: “I heard from a negotiation source who says this was just a first offer and that it will increase in the coming days.”

The journalist states the Sky Blues’ initial offer for the defender was considered too low, but they are willing to make an offer of €40m (£34m) to get a deal over the line. Palmeiras are said to be in “no rush” to finalise the move, indicating that a deal may not be possible until later in the January transfer window.

Reis could be a long-term success at Man City

The 19-year-old is already making a name for himself in his home country, having made 18 appearances in the Brazilian Serie A this season, and his defensive talents have been on show for all to see.

Over the past year, the Brazilian has averaged 1.87 tackles per 90, placing him in the 81st percentile compared to his positional peers, while an average of 3.08 aerials won per 90 ranks him in the 82nd percentile.

Of course, given that he is still a teenager, it may take time for Reis to get to a level where he’s capable of being a consistent starter for Guardiola’s side, but there are signs that he could soon be ready to make the step-up.

Members of the Brazilian media have lauded the starlet as a “monster”, while journalist Bence Bocsak has hailed him for his passing ability, which could make him a perfect fit in a Guardiola system.

£34m is a lot to spend on a teenager, but Reis is showing signs he could be capable of going right to the very top.

The Egyptian is arguably a better all-around striker than Haaland, and these attributes could perhaps help City get back to their best over the next few months.

When compared to his positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues, Marmoush even ranks in the top 1% for shot-creating actions and assists, the top 3% for successful take-ons and in the top 9% for touches in the opposition penalty area.

These statistics prove that Guardiola is buying one of the finest strikers in Europe. Hopefully, he can be the catalyst needed to spur on the rest of the team.

Signing such a player won’t come cheap to the Etihad side. According to journalist Florian Plettenberg, City will have to pay a fee of around €80m (£67.5m) to sign the striker this month.

Considering his form during the 2024/25 campaign, there is no doubt that Marmoush is worth a fee in this region, with Frankfurt holding firm in their valuation of their prized asset.

In a bid to improve his wide options, Guardiola spent £30m on signing winger Savinho from French side Troyes last summer.

During his loan spell at Girona in 2023/24, he scored 11 goals and grabbed ten assists as they secured qualification for the Champions League after a stunning season in La Liga.

During the early part of the season, Savinho received plenty of praise from pundit Paul Merson, who backed the City starlet to become a “superstar” in the future.

“I haven’t seen anything like him for a long time” added Merson when discussing the summer signing, and if he maintains his current form, he can be a star for City over the coming years.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the 20-year-old ranks in the top 3% for progressive carries (6.51) and successful take-ons (3.33) per 90, along with ranking in the top 11% for touches in the opposition penalty area (6.77) and assists (0.35) per 90 over the previous 365 days.

His potential is limitless, with the £30m fee that Guardiola paid for him looking like one of the finest bargains in City’s recent transfer history.

Not only that, but Savinho’s market value has soared since making the move to England last summer…

Not only does this suggest the club could make a significant profit on him if they so desired, but his value is also more than Marmoush.

They have a genuine sensation in their midst and the manager will hope to give him plenty more game time, which will only see the Brazilian get better and better as time goes on.

After several days of impasse, a group of Pakistan’s leading players including captain Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Rizwan agreed to sign the PCB’s central contracts – though only after successfully negotiating changes in several clauses.The group signed the contracts nearly a week after receiving them and just before flying out for the tour to Netherlands, after the PCB revised them on the day of departure. But ESPNcricinfo understands the players have signed on the condition that they will return after the Asia Cup in the second week of September to pick up discussions with the board over a couple of other clauses they remain unhappy about.The PCB announced 33 central contracts this season, splitting between white and red-ball players for the first time 2022-23. As per standard practice the PCB handed the players their copies of the contract at the start of the pre-tour camp in Lahore. Unusually, several players across categories didn’t sign immediately, seeking time instead to run the contracts by their advisers and lawyers before doing so. These players are believed to have objected to multiple clauses in a contract that the PCB generally makes unilaterally, given there is no players association in Pakistan.The players expressed a significant number of reservations about the contract, from minor ones to those of a broader nature: these range from questions around the NOC process for participation in foreign leagues, to seeking more information about image rights in ICC events and shares from participation fees at ICC events and clauses around signing individual endorsements.That led to a spate of meetings among the players themselves as well as with the board. Against that backdrop, and the fact there is no player’s body in the country, the pushback from a group of elite national cricketers, more aware than ever not only of their commercial value but rights as employees could be seen as a marker of sorts in player-board relations. Even until late on Thursday, as Pakistan readied for departure, there was a real chance that the captain, star fast bowler and wicketkeeper-batter – among others – travelled without having signed contracts.It is also significant that throughout the discussions, the monthly retainer amounts and match fees were not among the points of contention. All players will receive match fees of Rs. 838,530 PKR (approx. US$3800) for a Test, Rs. 515,696 PKR for an ODI (approx. US$2300) and PKR 372,075 (approx. US$1700) for a T20I. The retainer for a top Pakistan red-ball contract is PKR 1,050,000 per month (approx. US$4700) and PKR 950,000 (approx. US$4300) for a corresponding white-ball contract.
