Everton now chasing 16 y/o prodigy defender who can also play in midfield

Everton are interested in completing the signing of a young player who has been dubbed a “wonderful talent”, according to a fresh transfer claim.

Latest Everton news

The Blues built on their momentum from last week’s memorable 2-2 at home to Liverpool, winning 2-1 away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday evening.

David Moyes continues to do a hugely impressive job back in charge of Everton, bringing far more positive times back to the club after a doomed period under Sean Dyche. New signings will clearly be needed this summer, however, with some names mentioned as options in recent days.

Burnley centre-back Maxime Esteve has been touted as a target for the Blues come the end of the season, with the 22-year-old part of a Clarets team that has incredibly conceded just nine Championship goals in the whole of the campaign to date.

Meanwhile, West Brom midfielder Tom Fellows was linked with Everton during the January transfer window, but their late efforts to snap him up ended up being in vein. That said, a new update has said that the Merseysiders will once again be in for the Englishman when the campaign reaches its conclusion.

Everton eyeing "wonderful talent" this summer

According to reliable journalist Alan Nixon on Patreon [via One Football], Everton are “keen” on signing Rotherham United teenager Harrison Duncan.

The 16-year-old centre-back, who can also play as a number six, is seen as a player with massive potential, and the Blues could offer him a trial at Finch Farm in the near future. He has received praise from so many in his young career to date, including from Steve Evans.

“He’s a wonderful, wonderful talent, but that’s all he is right now. He’s not ready to be playing against, say, Jay Stansfield, he’s not ready on a regular basis to be playing against someone like Jonson Clarke-Harris.

“You have to think that six weeks ago this kid was 15. He’s not 17 until next August. When we have him up here to train with the boys, it’s really good for him because it will make him better.”

Despite his tender years, Duncan has already made his debut for Rotherham, coming in the EFL Trophy back in August, and it remains his only appearance for them to date. The fact that Everton are eyeing him up suggests that they see him as a future Premier League player, however, and planning for the long-term future is always so important.

The Blues are about to embark on an exciting new era in the club’s history, moving to a new stadium and looking to become a bigger powerhouse in the English game, and signing young players with high ceilings has to be an area of focus.

Granted, experienced heads in and around their peak are also needed, but if the Blues could acquire Duncan’s signature now, it could prove to be a masterstroke over time.

Former Australia allrounder has enjoyed success with Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire

Ashley Noffke, the former Australia allrounder, is a contender for the vacancy as England women’s head coach, ESPNcricinfo understands.Noffke, who played one ODI and two T20Is for Australia in 2007-8, has enjoyed recent success as head coach of Brisbane Heat and Queensland Fire, winning the 2019-20 Women’s Big Bash League and 2020-21 Women’s National Cricket League. He signed a contract extension last year that runs until 2025 but is understood to have been interviewed for the vacancy created by Lisa Keightley’s departure. Noffke is highly regarded in Australian cricket and previously worked as Australia women’s assistant coach under Matthew Mott, who became England men’s white-ball coach earlier this year.Jonathan Finch, the director of England women’s cricket, interviewed several candidates last week and an appointment is expected in the next 10 days. The job was advertised in September and the successful candidate will start on a three-year fixed term until November 2025.Two other contenders share the name Jon Lewis: the former Gloucestershire seamer who is men’s pace-bowling lead at the ECB, and the former Durham batter who has worked with England’s women as a batting consultant over the last 18 months.Further candidates for the role include Jon Batty, who has coached Oval Invincibles to the title in both editions of the women’s Hundred, as well as Michael Bates, the wicketkeeping and fielding coach who has worked extensively in the women’s game, and Gareth Breese, the Welsh Fire and England women’s performance pathway coach.Charlotte Edwards, the former England captain and current Southern Brave, Southern Vipers and Sydney Sixers coach, has previously ruled herself out of the running.England are expected to name a squad for their upcoming West Indies tour shortly after a coach is announced.

'World champion' Sam Curran bounces back stronger to give England title-winning edge

Allrounder says missing 2021 World Cup through injury helped development as a key cog in T20 side

Sam Curran has admitted he spent the last few weeks of the T20 World Cup asking the relevant seven members of England’s squad what it was like to win the 2019 50-over World Cup. Along with the buzz of success after so much hard work, they confirmed being able to say you had won a World Cup, putting you in an exclusive club among English sportspeople, was a perk that did not get old. “Now to be in that position to say I’ve won one is very cool,” he said. The 24-year-old can also let people know he was Player of the Match in the final, with 3 for 12 against Pakistan at the MCG, and moreover the Player of the Tournament with 13 wickets – joint second from just 22.4 overs – at 11.38. Depending on how well-versed the company he finds himself in, he might even let them know he answered England’s call for a death bowler in emphatic fashion. But Curran feels the overall prize is much more satisfying. Not least because it is a declaration that makes everything that came before it worthwhile – vindicating the hard work and the tough times. For Curran, the latter was a lower back injury that ruled him out of the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE,Related

Sam Curran, England's unassuming superstar, delivers at the death in style

England's approach might lead other teams into the T20 era

“I don’t care about the injury,” Curran declared with a smile. “I can call myself a world champion, which is pretty cool. Obviously missed the last tournament and was gutted and the guys lost in the semi-final. But there was no real talk about that this year, it was just we’ve got a job on our hands.”Curran, though, does care. Or at least he recognises the opportunity the injury provided him. “I think I can look back at my injury maybe as a positive. I got a little bit stronger and it was the first bit of a break since I started playing.”Part of the rehabilitation back at his county Surrey involved getting him more robust physically, leading to far more gym work than he would usually be able to do given the relentless schedule. There was also the opportunity to work on fine-tuning his action with Surrey bowling coach Azhar Mahmood, which involved working on achieving more bounce by having his arm slightly taller and not closing in on himself as he delivered the ball.It meant when his captain Jos Buttler sat him down on the tour of Pakistan to talk about a role he saw Curran playing with the ball, which involved being able to perform in the powerplay, middle overs and at the death, he had the requisite skills to excel.”I think maybe it was a bit of freshness and doing a little bit of work back at Surrey,” Curran said of how the break helped. “Getting a little bit stronger, working on alignment. I think that’s again confidence: when you’re playing well and feeling in good rhythm you can naturally get a bit more of a buzz towards the crease.”These grounds in Australia are probably suited to the way I wanted to bowl and make guys hit me towards the bigger boundaries. It’s my first time playing in Australia so that’s been a great challenge and I’ve loved it because we’ve won the tournament so maybe I’ll keep coming back here more.”Curran was full of praise for Ben Stokes’ contribution•AFP/Getty Images

In terms of inspiration as a death bowler, there was no one in particular, he said. What nuggets garnered from around him came through conversations with bowling coach David Saker and the rest of the attack. There was, however, one man Curran describes as a constant source of inspiration to him and many others within English cricket – fellow allrounder, Ben Stokes.”When Stokesy was out there, geez…” started Curran before losing his thoughts thinking of the innings of 52 not out that eventually took England to their target of 138 with an over to spare. “He’s done it so many times.”I’ve looked up to him for so long and, phwoar, he’s got so much guts and passion and he just does it time after time.”There isn’t too much similar to Curran and Stokes. One looks like he’s due to hit puberty, the other looks like he’s been through it twice. But there is an overriding sense that, like Stokes, Curran has a knack for the big occasion. Maybe not as bombastically as his team-mate, but enough to consistently fulfil a role for England bowling late in the innings when batters target you most without being fazed.”I probably wouldn’t have loved being in the middle when we needed that – he made it look very easy,” Curran responded when it is suggested he would have enjoyed the pressure of the chase. Really? “No, I probably wouldn’t!”I’ve looked up to him [Stokes], he’s always contributing to all three phases of the game, bat, ball and in the field. That’s what you strive to to do – be there in the moment when the crunch time is. He’s done that so many times recently, that gives you inspiration and gives you confidence in the dugout when he’s out in the middle.”Curran might not realise it just yet, but, like Stokes, team-mates and England fans alike will feel a similar comfort going forward whenever the ball is in his hand. He has more than earned that trust after ensuring he, along with this England team, can call themselves “world champions”.

Spurs have incredible 16-year-old who could be a bigger talent than Donley

There hasn’t been much to celebrate for Tottenham Hotspur fans this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are 14th in the Premier League and crashed out of both the FA Cup and League Cup in the space of just four days last week.

However, while it’s easy to focus on the doom and gloom, there have been some positives, such as the emergence of Mikey Moore and the performances of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.

Moreover, academy gem Jamie Donley has stepped up on loan, although the club already has another youngster in the academy who could be even better.

Donley's impressive season

Following his stellar campaign with the youth sides last season, in which he racked up an impressive haul of eight goals and 17 assists in 27 games, Donley was sent on his first loan move to League One side Leyton Orient this term.

Things got off to a relatively slow start in east London for the 20-year-old, as while he provided his first assist in an FA Cup tie in early November, he didn’t produce his first goal involvement in the league until the 21st of December, but since then he’s been on fire.

In all, the “sensational” gem, as dubbed by talent scout Kulig, has scored five goals and provided six assists in 32 appearances for The O’s, totalling 2193 minutes, which means he’s averaging a goal involvement every 2.81 games, or every 199.36 minutes.

Moreover, he might feel like he should have another goal to his name this season, as his incredible strike from practically the halfway line caused Stefan Ortega to score an own goal in the game against Manchester City in the FA Cup on the weekend.

Overall, in Donley, it would appear as if Spurs have another exciting prospect on their hands.

However, the talent conveyor belt at Hotspur Way seems to be never-ending, as there is another prospect currently in the academy who could be an even bigger talent.

In The Pipeline

The Spurs prospect more exciting than Donley

While the likes of Moore and even Will Lankshear have already made their debuts for the first team and look like they could go on to be brilliant players, the academy gem who could be a bigger talent than Donley is yet to play even a minute of first-team football.

Lucá Williams-Barnett has taken the academy by storm over the last year, so much so that while he hasn’t made it onto the pitch, he has made it onto the first-team bench a few times, which for a player who only turned 16 in October is incredible.

It’s not hard to understand why the club might want to fast-track his development when you take a look at his recent form, though.

For example, in just 13 appearances this season, totalling 1042 minutes, the teenage sensation, who respected football analyst Ben Mattinson has described as someone “to keep an eye on” going forward, has scored 14 goals and provided eight assists.

That means the dynamic “cheat code,” as described by academy expert and pundit John Wenham, is averaging 1.69 goal involvements every game, or in other words, a goal involvement every 47.36 minutes, which is frankly absurd.

Ultimately, it’s obviously too soon for Postecoglou to start using Williams-Barnett on a regular basis for the first team. Still, it might make sense to give him some minutes sooner rather than later, as he looks like he could be a future superstar for Spurs.

Chanderpaul's debut knock lifts West Indies after Labuschagne, Smith flay double hundreds

After chasing leather around the ground, the visitors’ openers repelled Australia’s new-ball surge

by 524 runsWest Indies debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul weathered a short ball assault late on day two on a grassy Optus Stadium pitch after double centuries from Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith powered Australia into a commanding position in the first Test. After spending 152.4 overs in the field, Chanderpaul impressively defied Australia’s star-studded attack alongside skipper Kraigg Brathwaite as the West Indies showed belated fight in a bid to claw back into the match.Chanderpaul, the son of legendary batter Shivnarine, copped an initiation into Test cricket as he edged a sharp delivery from quick Mitchell Starc through the slips. He then was hit on the pads by Starc only for the not out decision to be upheld in an umpire’s call.Chanderpaul was all at sea against quick Josh Hazlewood’s accuracy before a fluent drive through long on was a much-needed confidence boost. But he was back in the wars after being hit in a delicate spot, which required medical attention, before copping blows to the body from fierce short balls from Cummins and Hazlewood.Showcasing doggedness and similar technical characteristics to his father, Chanderpaul soldiered on gamely and started to look increasingly comfortable on a pitch playing few tricks. He unleashed several cavelier shots to counter the short ball but made it through his first test in this format. The gritty opening partnership has provided a much-needed spark for West Indies after a forgettable performance in the field.Australia declared 15 minutes into the final session when Travis Head was bowled for 99 just one delivery after Smith brought up his fourth Test double century.Head’s dismissal brought a close to Australia’s massive first innings, where they had three straight century-plus partnerships to vindicate Cummins’ decision to bat first on a green-tinged Optus Stadium surface which hasn’t produced fireworks so far.Australia’s massive innings was dominated by Smith and Labuschagne, who combined for a 251-run partnership and batted almost through the entire first session.Labuschagne reached his second Test double century just before lunch, celebrating by taking off his helmet followed by an enthusiastic wave of his bat. Two balls later, out of nowhere, he was dismissed just short of his highest Test score of 215 when he edged the spin of Brathwaite to wicketkeeper Josh Da Silva.Riding a dose of luck, Labuschagne continued his strong form at Optus Stadium, where he scored 143 and 50 three years ago against New Zealand in the last Test played at the ground.Marnus Labuschagne leaves to a rousing reception•Associated Press

Just before lunch, Smith equalled Sir Donald Bradman with his 29th Test century. He reached the milestone with a single to long on, who was strangely not brought in to restrict the run.In the process, Smith also passed 4000 Test runs at home. Only Bradman (98.22) and Sir Garfield Sobers (66.8) have better home averages than Smith’s 64.53.He also continued his dominance over West Indies, who he currently averages 232.33 against from six Tests.Even though the match meandered amid a smattering of fans, who started to create their own excitement by mocking West Indies’ sloppy fielding, Smith was unwavering in his concentration. He also reinforced his penchant for his new refined technique, where he has eradicated shuffling across the crease.Eyeing a declaration, Australia put the foot down in the second session with Head scoring at better than a run a ball in a 166-run partnership with Smith to flatten a lifeless West Indies attack. After aggressive captaincy early on day one, Brathwaite’s 30th birthday was soured as he sought a defensive approach and he might face further criticism for his use of the bowlers.Quicks Alzarri Joseph and Jayden Seales were surprisingly not used in the first hour despite West Indies needing early wickets to claw back into the contest.Brathwaite finally had some cheer later in the day in a rearguard along with his new opening partner Chanderpaul in belated signs of life from the tourists.
