E é difícil jogar no Maracanã.

Formidable CSK in Gujarat Titans' way of second straight IPL final

By virtue of finishing in the top two, both teams who are similar yet dissimilar in their methods, will have two shots at reaching the final

Moody: Super Kings might turn to Jadeja in the powerplay

Big picture: Titans and CSK – similar yet differentIt is no coincidence that Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings, teams that have built their campaigns around continuity, consistency in selection and role clarity, have earned the right to a second chance by finishing in the top two.MS Dhoni’s leadership traits are something Hardik Pandya, his opposite number, has deeply embodied over time. The backing of misfiring seniors, handholding junior players, encouraging the uncapped, boosting morale of players on the bench are all characteristics of a popular leader for whom the team would go the extra mile.Hardik’s handling of Vijay Shankar, once seen as his competitor, or young Noor Ahmad and Josh Little, to cite a few examples, has been as exemplary as Dhoni’s handling of Ajinkya Rahane, Tushar Deshpande or Matheesha Pathirana.Related

Shami succeeds flying in the face of T20 logic

With the bat, Vijay is enjoying his best year at the IPL with the backing he has seldom received elsewhere. Mohit Sharma’s journey from a net bowler, who swallowed his ego to sharpen his skills last year, to being one of the key bowlers this season is also a result of the captain’s backing.Rahane’s career appeared to have hit a dead end until he linked up with CSK. An injury to Ben Stokes gave him a foot in the door. Five games in, he broke the doors down with a batting approach seldom seen earlier. Now, as he gears up for the playoffs, Rahane’s career has received an unlikely second, or maybe third, wind with the prospects of being a World Test champion looming.Shivam Dube’s journey from an inconsistent allrounder to an on-demand six hitter against spin or Deshpande’s evolution from an erratic seamer riddled with no-ball problems and consistency to a gun striker are all examples of players thriving under the freedom and backing Dhoni has given them.Tuesday’s Qualifier 1 will pit these two similar, yet very different teams against each other in what promises to be a blockbuster clash. CSK will enjoy more than a slight edge, given they’ll have the home advantage emphatically by their side. The Chennai fans will have one more chance to celebrate their larger-than-life icon, their talismanic leader as a place in the final is a step away.Titans will quickly have to shake off weariness from their final league fixture against RCB that went past midnight. A long road trip to the airport and the subsequent processes to board will be perhaps longer than the flying time to Chennai itself. To do this all in the space of a few hours, knowing there’s another game to look forward to the next evening will no doubt be another test for the table-toppers.That they’ve made it this far for a second straight season is as much credit to the team as it is to the management. Now for the opportunity to be only the second team, after CSK in 2011 and 2012, to have a second straight crack at a home final in their second year of existence. It can’t get bigger than that.7:14

Form guideChennai Super Kings WLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
Gujarat Titans WWLWWTeam news: Will Hardik bowl?Hardik hasn’t bowled in three games now. When he last bowled in a game on May 7 against LSG, he didn’t complete his quota. Against RCB, without Hardik the sixth bowler, Yash Dayal and Mohit conceded 93 off their eight overs. If Hardik isn’t bowling, they might require either Dasun Shanaka or Rahul Tewatia to chip in, depending on conditions in Chennai.Josh Little, who featured in eight of Titans’ first 10 games, is back in India after international duty with Ireland and could replace Dayal in the side. If Titans go down that route, Abhinav Manohar is likely to return in place of Shanaka.CSK don’t believe in making too many changes, so expect them to go unchanged.Impact Player StrategyTitans have mostly used Shubman Gill or Vijay Shankar as Impact Player when they bat. With Gill set to play the WTC final within a week of the IPL finishing, it’s perhaps prudent to not expose him to potential on-field injuries. That said, Vijay gives them an additional bowling option, if required. However, he hasn’t been called in to bowl a single over so far this season. With the ball, one of them will likely be substituted for Mohit Sharma.Gujarat Titans (probable XII): 1 , 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Hardik Pandya (capt), 4 Vijay Shankar, 5 David Miller, 6 Dasun Shanaka, 7 Rahul Tewatia, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Yash Dayal, 10 Mohammed Shami, 11 Noor Ahmad, 12 Ambati Rayudu’s sharp catching may have earned him the right to not be subbed off in the Qualifier 1•BCCI

Pathirana and Dube have been used as Impact Players in each of their last three matches. In the previous game, Ambati Rayudu had a chance to provide a rare glimpse into his fielding abilities with a stunning catch at mid-off. So, after having a minimal role on the field for much of the group stages, Rayudu may well have earned the right for continuity. Is Dhoni thinking that way, though?Chennai Super Kings (probableXII): 1 Devon Conway, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 , 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Ambati Rayudu, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 9 Deepak Chahar, 10 Maheesh Theekshana, 11 Tushar Desphande, 12 Stats that matter Jadeja has a particularly good match-up against Hardik, having dismissed him twice in four innings. In comparison, Gill has struck at 153 against him without being dismissed even once in 36 deliveries. Shami has the wood over CSK’s openers. He has dismissed Conway on each of the two occasions they’ve faced off earlier, including the tournament opener. Shami also has the lid over Gaikwad, who has only managed to score at a strike rate of 70. It’s the lowest strike rate he has had against any pacer off whom he has faced at least 15 deliveries. Gaikwad hasn’t let being dismissed by Rashid alter his approach against the legspinner. His strike rate of 147 is the third-best in the IPL among all batters who’ve faced a minimum of five overs from Rashid. The 32 sixes Tewatia has hit in the death overs is the joint-most – alongside Jadeja – by an Indian since IPL 2020Pitch and conditionsHot weather, surfaces on the dryer side and spin-loading – all pretty common at this time of the year in Chennai. Expect it to be no different. The defending team will have to contend with some dew later at night. Four of the seven games so far this season at Chepauk have been won by the chasing side.

Newcastle monitoring "special" record-breaking wonderkid who idolises Neymar

Newcastle United are monitoring a “special” record-breaking international forward who idolises Neymar, according to a new report.

Newcastle veteran's nightmare season continues

Odysseas Vlachodimos has played just one game for Newcastle United since completing a £20 million move to St. James’ Park from Nottingham Forest last summer – with the Greek behind both Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in the pecking order on Tyneside.

The 30-year-old, however, had remained a regular for his national team, having started all six of Greece’s Nations League group matches, keeping four clean sheets to help Ivan Jovanovic’s side to win five.

That run between the sticks came to an end at the weekend, though, as Vlachodimos was dropped for Greece’s play-off fixture against Scotland, with Jovanovic instead naming Olympiakos’ Konstantinos Tzolakis in his place.

While no doubt frustrating for Vlachodimos, the decision proved to be the right one as Greece ran out as comprehensive 3-0 winners at Hampden Park to seal their promotion to Nations League Group A and sink Scotland down to Group B.

He could be an exciting addition for Eddie Howe.

Speaking after the game, former Scotland defender Willie Miller was full of praise for the Greeks’ performance.

“Sometimes the opposition are just better than you and the Greeks were better. Sorely disappointing, a great performance from Greece and a poor one from Scotland,” he said, according to BBC Sport. “Greece were just a better side, we had no answer for them. We had no creativity and no threat, we didn’t make it difficult at all for Greece.”

Newcastle monitoring Vlachodimos' teammate

Among those on the scoresheet for Greece in their 3-0 win over Scotland was teenager Konstantinos Karetsas, who recently switched his international allegiance from Belgium to represent the Azure & White. Karetsas scored his side’s second on the night, firing beautifully into the top corner from just inside the Scotland box.

At just 17 years of age, his goal saw him become the youngest player ever to score a competitive goal for the Greek national team.

According to TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, Newcastle are among a number of clubs who are currently keeping tabs on Karetsas. Bailey reports that representatives from Newcastle, Manchester United and Liverpool were all in attendance to watch the young attacking midfielder in action against Scotland.

When not playing for Greece, Karetsas plays for Racing Genk in the Belgian Pro League, for whom he’s scored two goals and provided four assists in 30 games this season. The Belgian-born star, who, according to BBC Sport, idolises Brazil legends Neymar and Ronaldinho, was described as “pretty special” by former Scotland winger Pat Nevin after his standout performance across two legs against the Tartan Army.

Greek journalist Stephen Kountourou, meanwhile, has hailed him as one of world football’s future stars: “We had to fight tooth and nail with the Belgian FA to stop him representing them and that was seen as a big coup for Greek football, because Karetsas is rated not just as a potentially decent talented player but as one of the big players for the future in international football.”

Tahlia McGrath says conceding 562 in warm-up game was 'perfect prep'

Allrounder says Australia “travelling really well as a group” despite absence of Meg Lanning

Tahlia McGrath has described the fact that Australia were pushed by England A in their Women’s Ashes warm-up as the perfect preparation for the series.England A bowled Australia out for 284 in the first innings of their three-day, red-ball warm-up match in Leicester last week then piled on 562 in reply, led by centuries to Lauren Winfield-Hill and Paige Scholfield.”It was perfect prep for us,” McGrath said at Trent Bridge, two days out from the Test which will begin the multi-format series. “We really enjoyed it. We got tested, we had a long day in the field and we had some really good moments and some moments that we’ve had some really good discussions about and reflected on. From a preparation point of view, we couldn’t be happier. We’ve had some really good chats, reflected and we’re going into this five-day game really confident.”Related

McGrath is vice-captain for Alyssa Healy, who in turn will lead the side in place of regular skipper Meg Lanning, who was ruled out of the tour for medical reasons. McGrath said she was impressed with how Australia had adapted in the circumstances.”Meg’s an outstanding captain and it’s obviously going to be a bit different without her, but everyone’s stepped up and just found that five percent extra,” she said. “It’s a collective approach with the side and Midge [Healy] is doing an outstanding job with leading from the front. Every time she speaks, everyone stops and listens. So we’re finding everyone’s stepping up and doing that little bit extra and we’re travelling really well as a group.”McGrath has been hugely impressed with Phoebe Litchfield, who is expected to open alongside Beth Mooney as Healy moves down the order to manage her workload, which also includes keeping wicket.Litchfield scored 68 during a 167-run stand with Annabel Sutherland, who made 116, as Australia reached 371 for 7 in the second innings of the warm-up game.”Phoebs has been unreal,” McGrath said. “If I was her, I’d be quite nervous, my first major tour away, and she’s like she’s been doing it for years.”She’s absolutely killing it, extremely hard working at training, and she’s so hard on herself, she just wants perfection. I’m really enjoying watching her journey and I’m excited for her, if she gets the opportunity, to watch her go out there and do her thing.”I look at our squad and I’m just excited about how much talent there is. You look at the Phoebe Litchfields, the Darcie Browns, yes, they’re young in age but wow, they’re serious cricketers. I don’t think it matters who we put on the park, it’s going to be a really good team and yeah, we’re missing a bit of experience but we’ve got some talent and we’ve got a lot of domestic experience behind us as well so I’m excited for different individuals to stand up at different times.”England enjoyed the best of the weather on Tuesday and were able to train on the outfield at Trent Bridge while Australia had been forced to train entirely indoors due to heavy morning showers. But McGrath didn’t believe that would dent Australia’s hopes of taking four points from winning the Test, which looks set to be played in finer conditions and with a fifth day providing an added buffer against a draw.”That’s one thing we were really excited about, the prospect of a result, and both teams play a really aggressive brand of cricket and are both in some really good form at the moment,” she said. “Personally, I love the five days I’d love to see it from now on. That’s where I stand on it. But we’ll leave that for others to decide.”If any moisture remains in the air, McGrath will look forward to the chance to try and swing the red Dukes ball, which she said had provided a learning experience in terms of how to use it, but a welcome one ahead of just her fourth Test appearance in what will be 53 matches for her country.”I’m feeling really good,” she added. “If you’d asked me a couple of months ago, maybe a different story when I was learning the red ball. But we’ve all put in a lot of hard work, we’ve had a lot of discussions as a team, a lot of discussions with our skill group coaches… everyone’s feeling really good about their game.”We’ve had a decent training block where we’ve trained pretty uncomfortable at times and we’ve come out better for it, so I personally go in full of confidence and I know for a fact that the team goes in really confident as well.”

Newcastle now join race for "special" teenage star likened to Cole Palmer

Newcastle United have joined the race for a “special” young star who has been likened to Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, according to a new report.

Newcastle plan for big summer after Carabao Cup success

Newcastle have had quite the season. Not only are the Magpies firmly in the race for Champions League football next season, they also won the Carabao Cup – their first piece of major silverware in 64 years.

To clinch the trophy, Eddie Howe’s side beat Premier League leaders Liverpool 2-1 in the final at Wembley Stadium, with both Alexander Isak and Dan Burn on the scoresheet.

Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle about the club’s open-top bus parade, which took place over the weekend, Burn said: “It’s something I’ll never forget – I knew there would be a lot of people but when we saw the sheer amount of people it was amazing.

“It really hit home, what it means to the region and the city, the achievement that we’ve managed to do. The lads were starting chants all the way round and just being able to take in that moment, it was only an hour but it’s an hour I’ll never forget.”

On his goal in the final, which saw the English defender head home Kieran Trippier’s corner, Burn said: “The first few days, my phone was getting constantly pinged with videos and remixes, when I was away with the England lads it was on TV all the time and I ended up having to switch the TVs off at the end because I was starting to get a bit embarrassed!”

“I will watch it forever, I’ll never tire of it – it was an amazing moment.”

Newcastle join race for Dibling despite huge price tag

Even after such a successful season, Newcastle are expected to bolster their squad in the summer, with Howe keen to push on from this year’s achievements and build more depth. Among those players thought to be interesting the Magpies is Southampton’s Tyler Dibling.

According to Chronicle Live, Newcastle are now one of several clubs keen on the English talent and are “expected to closely monitor” his situation at Southampton in the coming weeks, as the Saints brace for a significant transfer shake-up when they eventually get relegated back to the Championship.

Though previously Southampton put a price tag of £100 million on Dibling’s head, it’s thought that the asking price will significantly drop in the summer to ensure a sale.

Dibling has been one of Southampton’s standout players in an otherwise poor season for the club, and has been heavily lauded for his performances by former Premier League players Danny Murphy and Dion Dublin.

“It is the quality he has got – the belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good,” Murphy told BBC Sport of the 19-year-old in December.

“It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special.”

Dublin added: “Do you know what it is? I don’t want to put any pressure on him, but he plays his game like Cole Palmer, doesn’t he? He plays free and easy, and he gets himself into good positions, rolls players and takes the ball well.”

Ellyse Perry: Australia have Ashes series win 'in their sights'

Allrounder warns that tourists have yet to produce “complete performance” on tour

Valkerie Baynes17-Jul-2023Australia have rediscovered their mojo, but simply retaining the Ashes is not enough for a world-beating side who have been pushed to their limits by England. The hosts can make it victories in two white-ball series from two if they clinch the final ODI in Taunton on Tuesday, although the best they can do points-wise is to move to equal with Australia on eight, which will mean the overall contest is a draw and the tourists still heading home with the Ashes. Ellyse Perry, whose innings of 91 set Australia up to break a three-game losing streak in the second ODI in Southampton, said that wouldn’t do.”That last game in Taunton is really important to us because I think a few of us have been involved in campaigns where we’ve retained the Ashes, but it’s always nice to win the Ashes so it’s a good challenge for us,” Perry said on Sunday. “It’s the last game so everyone has that in their sights.Related

“We’ve also probably been chasing a complete performance from the group and that hasn’t come yet. We’ve played patches of really good cricket and today, the way that we fought the whole way through and wrestled back momentum at different stages is one of our better outings on this trip, but I think there’s still a really great opportunity for us to play to our potential. That’s a great carrot and, as I said, to win the Ashes rather than retain them.”In a quick turnaround of just over 48 hours between matches, both sides must overcome the emotion of playing through another nerve-jangling finish after Australia won by three runs on the final ball at the Ageas Bowl, Nat Sciver-Brunt’s unbeaten century taking England to the brink of another victory that would have kept the series alive. The closeness of the contest was in keeping with the entire series, which has been hard-fought throughout, and Heather Knight, the England captain, said afterwards that victory in the final match would prove there was no longer “a gap” between the sides. Meanwhile, Alana King, the legspinner who turned the game Australia’s way with three key wickets, believes her side is still some distance ahead and keen to show it in Taunton. But Perry has a more nuanced view.”I actually have probably a slightly different look on the gap,” she said. “If you look across the last four or five years, we’ve had lots of really, really close games against different opponents, whether that’s been India or England, New Zealand at times, South Africa. But I think something that probably has been key to those last few years has been the consistency of our play and the ability to find ways to win lots of matches.”So I don’t know if there’s always been a huge gap. I think teams are certainly finding different ways of playing and improving and I think that’s no different for us, so we’ve got to keep evolving and keep improving. But, in terms of gap, I think it’s just that we’ve been really consistent and England have played some really consistent cricket this series so it’s pushed us often and I think we’ve pushed them as well. Hence why it’s been so tight.”Ellyse Perry proved the difference in a tight Southampton ODI•Getty Images

Amy Jones, the England wicketkeeper-batter, first mooted the idea that England were closing on Australia during this series after her explosive innings of 40 not out from 21 balls lifted her side to a respectable total in the first T20I at Edgbaston before the visitors managed to scrape past them by four wickets with just one ball remaining. That was a turning point for the hosts, who went on to win the next three games to claim honours in the T20 leg 2-1 and take a 1-0 lead in the ODIs, as it was the catalyst for England to play with the confidence of a side that knew their opponents were beatable.Australia, in the unfamiliar position of losing a string of close encounters, were forced to change things up and they opted for a four-pronged spin attack for the Ageas Bowl.King, who hadn’t played since Australia’s victory in the Test which opened the series, claimed 3 for 44 while offspinner Ashleigh Gardner – who bagged 12 wickets in the Test – took 3 for 54 and bowled a tight penultimate over before left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen reprised her role of ice-cool death bowler with great success for the third time in four ODIs against England. Jonassen had bowled the last over during the group stage and in the final of last year’s 50-over World Cup, with Sciver-Brunt also scoring a century in each of those games. At Bristol last Wednesday, Knight and Kate Cross managed to get one up on Jonassen as they guided England to victory with 11 balls to spare.Georgia Wareham was their other spinner in Southampton, taking 1 for 47 from her 10 overs, but it was her unbeaten 37 off 14 balls, including 26 runs off Lauren Bell in the final over of Australia’s innings that lifted the total to 282 for 7, asking England to produce their second record ODI run chase in as many matches to win.”It was really deliberate selection decision for us to have the four spinners in the team and they did an amazing job,” Perry said. “For Alana to come in and play a first white-ball game of the series and perform the way she did, Georgia’s been consistent the whole way, Ash is so dependable and then JJ closing out – I’ve just named four of the best spinners in the world there, which is amazing to have at our disposal.”I think what our spinners have done really well is just built constant pressure. I think from a pace group, and it’s something that we’ll keep working on and it presents a really awesome opportunity for us to take our game to a new level, is just to be able to build that consistent pressure. We’ve bowled well in patches at times but often let players off the hook and with England’s aggressive approach to that, especially at the start of their innings, that’s kind of got away from us at different points in time.”That’s why the spin has been so effective, the ability to maintain pressure throughout an over and a spell, and then that’s picked up wickets. As I said ,I think the pace group’s probably been off at different times, but that’s a really exciting thing because if we can get that right then I think there’s a complete game of cricket in us.”
