A day before the start of the Jharkhand vs Haryana Ranji Trophy fixture at Jamshedpur’s Keenan Stadium, while the local Jharkhand boys were training, a young boy strolled out to the turf. When a securityman stopped him, he teared up and said he only wanted a selfie with Saurabh . Saurabh Tiwary wasn’t around at the time, but the fans didn’t know that. After the boy, a few others attempted to get into the ground to try and meet him.Tiwary’s popularity in the Jharkhand cricket circles has to be seen to be believed. Das, who has also coached the Jharkhand team in the past, was in attendance, and recalled an old story that gives you a glimpse into Tiwary the person.”He must have been 15 or 16, and a ball hit his head during training. He needed some stitches. He went to the hospital and came right back to me. I told him to pad up and go bat in the nets [and he did so] – I wanted to see if he was scared and wanted to test him,” Das said. “I have never had a student as dedicated as Saurabh. His keenness to be at the ground and his hunger for runs is unmatched.”Tiwary wore the India cap – in three ODIs, in late 2010 – and had a lengthy run in the IPL, playing 93 matches across 11 seasons between 2008 and 2021, missing out only in 2014, 2018 and 2019. The only time Jharkhand won a domestic tournament, the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy in 2010-11, Tiwary was the captain. Add to that 8076 first-class runs, 4050 in List A cricket, 3454 in T20s… one dream, however, remained unfulfilled.”Cricket has taught me two things. One is that you have to fight for everything, and the second is that you need to understand you won’t get everything in life. Some things will remain out of reach,” Tiwary said. “I had a dream that we will win the Ranji Trophy but I couldn’t achieve it. That takes us back to the thing about fighting for everything. O gramado repleto de poças travou o desenrolar da partida, fazendo jogadores errarem em profusão, aumentando erros em divididas e diminuindo a qualidade dos chutes. O Vasco assustou em conclusão de Rayan, enquanto a equipe tocantinense viu Fábio Lucas e Washington tentarem oportunidades nos primeiros minutos.

Aos poucos, o Cruz-Maltino foi se impondo, mas esbarrou nas condições do gramado. Paixão e Barros tentaram jogada na área, mas o meia se atrapalhou em uma poça. Logo depois, Ray arrancou livre, passou pelo goleiro e finalizou, mas chuto mais água do que bola. A nova chance da equipe de William Batista veio em cobrança de falta: Julião arriscou e o chute assustou o goleiro Pedro.

CRUZ-MALTINOS SAEM NA FRENTE

Incisivo, o Vasco quase teve a “ajuda” de uma poça d’água. Um lançamento parou na poça d’água e atrapalhou o goleiro Pedro. GB encheu o pé e o camisa 1 desdobrou-se para salvar.

De tanto pressionarem, os Meninos da Colina saíram na frente. Após lançamento para a área, a bola parou em uma poça e ficou diante de Ray. O camisa 7 concluiu de cavadinha e mandou para a rede.

PRESSÃO VASCAÍNA E DESGASTE NO CAPITAL

Ainda em meio à partida chuvosa, o Vasco tentou manter seu ímpeto na volta do intervalo. Os comandados de William Batista acharam brechas para pressionar o adversário. Rayan arrancou livre até a área e finalizou rente à trave. O Capital, por sua vez, via seus atletas se ressentirem do longo tempo de inatividade (a equipe não atuava desde setembro de 2022). e caírem com cãibras. Todas as suas substituições aconteceram por desgaste físico.

Aos poucos, a equipe da Colina foi caindo de ritmo. À exceção de conclusão de Ray para fora, Paixão e Rayan tentavam tabelas, mas não conseguiam ir à frente. Na reta final, as entradas mais ríspidas tomaram conta da partida. Após recorrer a lances de bola aérea, o Vasco voltou a ter grande chance em finalização de Leandrinho que foi por cima do travessão.

VASCO CELEBRA EM RETA FINAL ELETRIZANTE

Aos trancos e barrancos, o Capital aproveitou vacilo cruz-maltino e foi se lançando a frente. Em uma delas, Careca arrancou até a intermediária e foi parado com falta por Vitão. Pablo partiu para a cobrança, Cadu pulou com atraso e viu a bola entrar na rede.

Nos acréscimos, o Vasco reagiu alçando bolas para a área. Em meio a tanta tensão, a equipe chegou à vitória. Após lançamento, GB aproveitou uma sobra, cruzou e Roger subiu entre os zagueiros para cabecear, definindo a vitória por 2 a 1. De alma lavada.

Shreyas Iyer called the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL 2024 final “comprehensive”, lauding his team for playing “like invincibles throughout the season”.”This is what we demanded from the team and every individual, they stood up on the right occasion,” Iyer said after KKR secured a third IPL title, their first since 2014. “It is hard to express how we are feeling right now. The wait was so long. We played like invincibles throughout the season. There is so much to cherish right now.”KKR enjoyed one of the most dominant IPL campaigns ever, equalling Shane Warne’s Rajasthan Royals from 2008 for the fewest losses across a season (three). I am running out of words right now,” Iyer said of KKR’s season. “We have been tremendous right from game one, and when we stepped [out], all we demanded from ourselves was to back each other no matter the situation.”The game could have gone either way – they have been playing phenomenal cricket, SRH, throughout the season. Today, we were lucky enough to bowl first and, at the same time, every situation went in our favour. Thanks to SRH [for] the way they have played throughout the season. They have been simply phenomenal.”It was one-way traffic from the time Mitchell Starc snared Abhishek Sharma with arguably the ball of the tournament. It pitched on middle and leg and zipped sharply past Abhishek’s outside edge to smash into off stump. That wicket started a slide; Vaibhav Arora took out Travis Head for a first-ball duck with a peach of an awayswinger before Starc struck for a second time, dismissing Rahul Tripathi for 9, and SRH were 21 for 3 inside five overs.”That [big games] is when all the big players stand up,” Iyer said of Starc. “It was a high-pressure game. He has been so good off the field. He has never shown any sort of complacency in his work ethic. Every time we used to go for the plunge pool, he used to be there… something for everyone to learn.”Iyer was also effusive in praise of Andre Russell, who picked up 3 for 19 in 2.3 overs to finish with 19 wickets for the season, his best tally with the ball at any IPL. “He has got that magic wand, which he is hiding somewhere on the field,” Iyer said. “He is hoping to come and bowl and deliver for the team. He is waiting for me to call him all the time.”Russell has been lucky for us. Starc: ‘There have been plenty of jokes about the money’Mitchell Starc reckons being “more experienced and older” since the previous time he played in the IPL (2015) helped him deal with the pressure of his huge price tag. Starc became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL, going for INR 24.75 crore (US$2,982,000 approx.) at this season’s auction. He then had a tough start to the campaign, going for 100 runs across his first two games without getting a wicket, but was Player of the Match in both KKR’s playoffs – the first time a player has done this at the IPL.”There have been plenty of jokes and whatnot made about the money,” he said with a laugh after the final. “It’s been a long time since I have played in the IPL. I am certainly an older and more experienced player now. It’s probably helped with managing all the expectations or leading the attack or whatever it maybe. I am certainly glad I am a bit more experienced and older to deal with all of that.”Personally, it has been a lot of fun, been great to learn and see how these guys go about it. Full credit to the whole squad of players and staff, it has made my life pretty easy.”It is a great night for KKR. What a game, what a series, what a season. It was an upward journey through from the start of the IPL to now, but we have a fantastic squad of bowlers and batters and our staff have been fantastic to get everyone peaking at the back end of the tournament. We have been such a consistent side. We haven’t had one or two people standing out, it’s been contributions from everyone. So, great to contribute personally but I think the fact that we’ve had everyone contribute throughout the year has been a big part of our success.”

Narine: ‘Couldn’t ask for a better birthday gift’Sunil Narine said the freedom he got, especially form team mentor Gautam Gambhir, to express himself with the bat made a huge difference to his season. His final tally read 488 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 180.74. He also got 17 wickets, and took home the MVP award for a record third time.”Getting the role to just go there and express myself, trying to get the team off to a flier, that’s key,” Narine said. “The backing of the support staff, especially GG [Gambhir] just saying, ‘go there and enjoy it, just try to win a few games for the team; I am not asking you to do the entire season, but just a few games.’ That was very good advice.”This is Narine’s third IPL title with KKR after 2012 and 2014, and it came on his 36th birthday.”Coming into the ground today it felt like 2012 [when the final was also played in Chennai]. I think the feeling is overwhelming and I genuinely couldn’t ask for a better birthday gift,” he said. “I am enjoying my cricket at the moment, batting, bowling and fielding. What helps is when your team is winning. We have a great bunch of guys who put out a lot of work throughout the season and the fight we gave throughout the season is very good. It shows how good a team we are.”

When we were going for runs, at one point of time it was almost nine an over, and the way we came in and took wickets, I think those wickets were imperative at that point of time,” Shreyas said. “The attitude and approach of every bowler was to come and see to it that they get the wicket and that’s what they did.”When you have variety in the bowling lineup, and the way they have been bowling throughout, it is just mesmerising. And to be honest, they have been true in terms of their work ethics.”No one is taking their position lightly and the way they have been capitalising on the opportunities provided by the support staff and the management, I think it’s simply amazing. Hopefully we keep continuing with the momentum in the final.”Shreyas was also happy with the batting effort. KKR were without Phil Salt, who’d made himself an indispensable member of the XI this season but had to leave on England duty. Rahmanullah Gurbaz came in in his place for his first game of the season and went on to make a 14-ball 23 to give KKR early momentum in their chase.”The way Gurbaz came in, it was his first game. He gave an impactful start for us. Sunny [Narine] as usual taking the momentum from thereon, I think it’s pretty important in the powerplay,” Shreyas said. “And from there on, the middle-order batters, we have to just come in and see to it that we carry forward the same run rate.”After Gurbaz and Sunil Narine did their bit in the powerplay, Shreyas and Venkatesh put on an unbroken 97-run stand to fire KKR into the final.”Right now, it’s important that we go back and enjoy the moment. We have won an important game,” Shreyas said. “Come the match day, the final, we’ll be in our zone and see to it that we deliver our best.”
