Newcastle fans can’t quite believe what Everton boss Marco Silva has said after the two sides played out a thrilling encounter on Saturday.

Everton rocked up to St. James’ Park on Saturday afternoon full of confidence and verve, and it showed.

Coming off the back of one of their most impressive, professional and resilient performances of the season against Liverpool, the Toffees raced out to an early lead against the Magpies.

Of course, an epic comeback including goals from Salomon Rondon and Ayoze Perez turned the match on its head, and ex-Sunderland ace Jordan Pickford had an absolute nightmare in the second half.

The English international was lucky not to be sent off in the first half, then saved a penalty and spent the next 20 minutes winding up the home support, only to let the first Newcastle goal go straight through him and make a complete mess of the second.

Silva doesn’t think the 25 year-old was affected by the crowd though, saying: “Jordan is an expressive player.

“Two seasons ago he made a big step in his career coming to us and, then, playing at the level he played for the national team in the World Cup and he is able to cope with all atmospheres in all stadiums around the world.

“I’m not thinking that the good and not so good things he did in the game were because of the crowd.”

It was clear for all to see that Pickford let the occasion get the best of him though, and Newcastle fans are crucifying Silva’s verdict on what has become a key talking point from Saturday’s clash.

Morgan Schneiderlin’s resurgence at Everton could potentially alter Marco Silva’s summer transfer plans, but should save the Toffees a whole load of cash.

What’s the word, then?

Well, since signing from Manchester United in a deal potentially rising to £24m, the Frenchman has failed to convince the Goodison Park faithful that he has been worth the money.

He has been booed by the club’s supporters following an alleged training ground row, and has seen his confidence become shot under both Ronald Koeman and Silva, the latter of whom is convinced by his quality and is keen to help him rediscover his mojo.

Recently, however, the former Southampton man has two successive starts against both Cardiff and Liverpool – the fact that he was trusted to start the Merseyside derby speaks volumes of how his fortunes with the Toffees are starting to change.

Transfer plans ripped up

Everton were reportedly in for Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart back in the summer, and again in January, but were rejected twice by the defensive midfielder who they are obviously intent on landing – one would assume that they will make another move for him in the summer.

However, what Silva and the Toffees perhaps weren’t banking on is Schneiderlin to turn his Toffees career around impressively in such a short space of time, a factor which could potentially see the club bin their plans to sign Tousart or in fact another defensive midfield option.

Idrissa Gueye has also performed admirably since his attempts to force a move to Paris Saint-Germain in January failed.

So, with the pair bang in form and in the prime years of their career, Silva should perhaps focus on recruiting in another area which needs some investment, such as the right-back position, and trust his current options to do the job in the defensive midfield areas.

Arsenal’s on-loan winger Reiss Nelson has been included in the England Under-21 squad while on loan at Hoffenheim, per the FA.

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a productive season in the Bundesliga, scoring six goals and laying on one assist in 17 domestic appearances.

What’s the word?

Nelson is named as one of seven attacking players by manager Aidy Boothroyd, alongside the likes of Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He has struggled in recent weeks in Germany, however, and was recently dropped from the squad to face Nurnberg.

Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann said, as reported by the Daily Mail, that it was an “educational measure” to leave him out, suggesting that there was no injury involved in his absence.

German outlet Sport1 add that there were “obviously disciplinary reasons” behind him being dropped.

Nevertheless, he will be eligible to play against Poland and Germany in the upcoming international friendlies.

Nelson has made a total of 16 senior appearances for Arsenal and is scheduled to return to the Emirates at the end of the season.

He has won a total of four caps for the Under-21s, scoring two goals.

Shock call-up

This is surprising for a number of reasons, not least due to the axe wielded by Nagelsmann earlier this week.

If Nelson has disciplinary issues at his club, he should not be called up by his country.

That is an indisputable fact and yet there Nelson is, preparing to meet up with the Young Lions.

He has been in good form when he has played in 2018-19 but he has yet to prove his discipline and does not warrant his selection.

Nagelsmann is attempting to educate the youngster and England calling him up undermines those efforts and may well limit the potential of a player widely regarded as a wonderkid.

If the issues that are occurring in Germany are not resolved due to this news, then what is usually a huge boost for young players could end up seriously harming his development.

Well, the season now looks all but over for Steven Gerrard and his men, after what was an embarrassing defeat to Aberdeen in the cup, there isn’t much hope sitting within Ibrox. Clearly, every Ger reading this will know that the Gerrard project is only in its first phase, though this Rangers we’re talking about. 

The pressure is on.

This season seems to have just passed Gerrard by, and with his maiden campaign coming to end, he can look to next season full of excitement and knowledge of what is needed. Things will improve. They simply have to.

Rangers must step up next season, surely it’s time someone stops Celtic’s reign, both in the league and cup competition.

During the season, Gerrard has mentioned time and time again after games that there will need to be changes made throughout his time as Rangers’ boss. With that in mind, this upcoming summer is a huge chance for the Liverpool icon to make a few requests to the board and really begin to pile some pressure on bitter rivals Celtic.

So, here are a couple of demands we feel the Englishman should make:

Investment in youth 

So far during his time, Gerrard has preferred signing the older player for the experience ala Gareth McAuley, Steven Davis or Jermain Defoe, or loaning in youth prospects. So, with that in mind, in order to get the correct balance, it can be argued that Gerrard should look to invest in the youth academy at Rangers.

Loaning in a youth player only brings a temporary connection to the club, meaning players may not necessarily give all they can because after all, it isn’t their mother club.

However, creating a successful youth academy of their own will bring a new lease of life to the Gers’ development, as well as saving the club some money from having to make loan deals themselves.

Basically, the more talents like Glen Middleton to emerge, the better.

Increase the transfer budget 

If there were to be a further increase in the transfer budget, it would without a doubt be music to Gerrard’s ears. It would mean not having to make cheap signings on older players, or relying on contracts to end for a free transfer. Going forward, it would give the 38-year-old manager a chance to bring in some real talent on a permanent basis, giving him that foundation that he can begin to build a successful side on.

With this in mind, Gerrard must know that he needs to improve the squad, as he has mentioned before, it is time to bring in some magic to the side and begin to mount a serious title challenge for the seasons to come.

It has been an incredible three years to be a Sheffield United supporter hasn’t it?

The Blades’ appointment of Chris Wilder in 2016 turned out to be a masterstroke for the club as they stormed to the League One title at the end of that season before finishing in the top half of the Championship last year.

The 2018/19 campaign has seen them reach new heights as United are now within touching distance of a return to the top flight of English football after 12 years away.

Wilder’s side are currently second in the league standings and hold a one point-lead over Leeds United yet they are by no means guaranteed to achieve automatic promotion with the club facing eight season-defining fixtures.

To achieve their goal of Premier League football next season, they will need their players to avoid becoming complacent against sides who they realistically should be beating giving the nature of their performances this season.

One individual in particular could provide the spark needed for the Blades to get over the finishing line by finally proving his worth at the club. Kieran Dowell joined United on loan from Everton in January and was thought to be the solution to Wilder’s side’s occasional issues with providing creativity for the likes of Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick.

However, the midfielder has yet to show the consistency needed to succeed at Championship level despite clearly being a promising young player. His winning goal against West Bromwich Albion in February outlined just what he is capable of and if he can provide more moments like that in the coming weeks, it could make all the difference between automatic promotion and the lottery of the play-offs.

More importantly for Dowell, by demonstrating Premier League-level qualities in the Championship, he may finally be given a chance to play in the top-flight on a regular basis, whether it be with his parent club Everton or as part of the Blades’ squad next year.
