Arsenal fans savage Spurs after another embarrassing defeat

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal’s Under-18 team came from 2-0 down to beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 on Tuesday.

After falling 2-0 down, an exceptional late comeback saw the young Gunners emerge victorious.

Bukayo Saka pulled a goal back in the 85th minute before Brooklyn Lyons-Foster scored an own goal, inadvertently turning in a Saka cross. And, in injury time, Ben Cottrell scored the winner as the Gunners’ Under-18 side ended Spurs’ impressive unbeaten run this season.

Arsenal have now won 18 and lost just two of their 20 games this term, while Spurs have won 16, drawn two and lost one.

The Gunners have a four-point lead over Spurs at the top of the Under-18 Premier League South, though the young Lilywhites do have a game in hand.

And fans have revelled in the result, which came less than 24 hours after Arsenal leapfrogged Spurs in the Premier League following their 2-0 win over Newcastle United at the Emirates.

Newcastle United: Lee Charnley set to do the most Lee Charnley thing ever

Fans have long asked questions over Lee Charnley’s ability to be successful in his managing director’s role at Newcastle United, due to his failure to secure signings and constant bungling of straightforward looking deals.

So it will come as no surprise to fans that a report out today from the Daily Mail suggests that the club are unwilling to offer more than £12 million for star loanee striker, Salomón Rondón.

The asking price is £16m. The asking price has always been £16m. And if West Brom are still a Championship side in May, the asking price will continue to be £16m.

It is not a secret. It is etched into his contract, and the Baggies, the player and his agent will all have told Charnley as much.

Naturally, Charnley being the tremendous transfer negotiator that he is [insert sarcasm here], mulls over the deal and comes up with the logic [!] that, with increased interest in the player mounting all the time, and competition for his signature in the summer, a way-short £12m offer will get the deal done.

If true, how much more incompetence must be shown before Ashley makes the decision to replace him with someone who has a football background, and knows what it takes to negotiate with clubs.

The problem is, Ashley, allegedly (as per the Shields Gazette), has Charnley on a salary that is dwarfed by other clubs, and he knows that to bring someone else in would mean paying out more money.

But surely, failure to sign a player who is currently at the club, insists he wants to stay at the club and has a sell-on clause in his contract, must spell the end for Charnley.

His counter-argument will be the Miguel Almirón deal. He made a take it or leave it offer to Atlanta — short of any asking price, of course — and stuck to his guns, until the MLS side caved and accepted the bid.

But his argument is not really valid. In this particular case, they had already brought in Almirón’s replacement and with only being allowed a certain number of franchise players, they had to move the Paraguayan out, but with little other interest, the only option was Newcastle.

And, had Charnley got the deal done quickly, for the sake of — in football terms — pocket change, he could have been playing for the Magpies throughout January.

He has become renowned with dragging deals out, and more often than not, seeing them end in the player going elsewhere.

Some may argue he is working with Ashley’s hand pulling the strings, but when it comes to deals, if the money is released, it is his job to get them done, and the owner takes a back seat.

As much as Ashley is to blame for most of Newcastle’s shortcomings, Charnley shares a portion of the blame, and needs to be held to account for his failings.

What do you think of Lee Charnley’s role at Newcastle? Should he be replaced with someone more knowledgeable? Who would you bring in? Let us know…

The two most important things Manuel Pellegrini said at today’s press conference

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United will look to bounce back from their disappointing performance and result against Everton last time out when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Monday night.

The east London outfit’s hopes of securing a seventh-place finish this season suffered a big blow as they were beaten 2-0 by the Toffees on their own patch, leaving them five points adrift of a spot which could still yield European football next term.

Irons manager Manuel Pellegrini spoke to the press on Friday prior to his team’s trip across the capital, and these are the two most important things he said.

Marko Arnautovic’s form

The Austria international was booed off by sections of the London Stadium crowd when he was taken off against Everton, and no goals and one assist in his previous eight Premier League appearances tells you all you need to know about his current situation.

Pellegrini said: “I don’t think anybody can be happy. The fans are not happy, me, Marko is not happy but this happens to some players in a moment of the season when they are not in their best moment. Maybe they need the support more than to punish them.

“Talking with Marko, he wants to do things better. He is absolutely involved with our team, what happened in December with China is now over and finished.

“If anyone thinks that Marko doesn’t want to be here at West Ham, they are wrong. Marko is absolutely involved mentally and physically.”

West Ham fans should certainly be interested to hear their manager’s update on a player who has clearly gone down in many of their estimations, considering he has been their biggest goal threat over the course of the past 18 months or so.

Good season?

Considering the likes of Manuel Lanzini, Winston Reid, Andriy Yarmonlenko, Carlos Sanchez and Jack Wilshere have been missing for big chunks of the campaign, Pellegrini actually believes the 11th-placed Hammers have enjoyed a decent season in the circumstances.

The former Manchester City boss said: “Our mentality must always be to aim for more. With so many injured players this season – and long injuries too – I don’t think we’ve had a bad season but we must try to improve it over the last six games.”

While the injury factor has clearly been a big one with some of the players missing ones who would be on the team-sheet every week, it still doesn’t excuse some of the below-par performances that have been seen from those who have filled in.

They have been more than good enough to get results that West Ham simply haven’t got, and that must be a worry ahead of the summer.

West Ham United: Manuel Lanzini’s injury blow prolongs the creative curse

Lady luck just isn’t favouring West Ham United.

On another day, they could’ve easily come away from Old Trafford as victors. However, a cruel stroke misfortune struck the Hammers, who despite being the better side suffered a crushing loss.

To make things worse, influential midfielder Manuel Lanzini limped off after a great showing He’s reportedly (as per Claret and Hugh) suffered a groin strain and the extent of his lay-off is yet to be determined. In any case, it seems like this curse is hovering around the Hammers at the moment.

Manuel Pellegrini never seems to have a fully fit squad and must be frustrated with mounting injuries. Indeed, the Chilean must be worried about how his creative flow is being disrupted by constant injuries. Lanzini was menacing at Old Trafford, bamboozling Manchester United’s defenders with his tricks and flicks before putting in a sublime assist for Felipe Anderson’s equalizer.

It seemed like the Argentine wizard had found his best touch after returning from injury. Yet, the script had something else in mind. As the season draws to a close, the Hammers find themselves without a proper creative link in attack.

Frankly, Anderson can’t be relied upon to do everything. Even Samir Nasri, brought on to add that touch of guile to their attack, sits on the sidelines.

It’s almost as if the Hammers are cursed in attack. Their strikes are misfiring and now their creative stars are forced out through injury. This cannot go on for long and a big summer must lie ahead for David Gold and David Sullivan, whether or not they’re planning to spend as much money as last season.

Clearly, attacking reinforcement needs to arrive if Project Pellegrini is to hit the next level.

Opinion: Chelsea would be foolish to accept insulting bids for Reece James

Transfer ban or no transfer ban, one area Maurizio Sarri needs to try fine-tune at Chelsea in the summer is right-back.

This season, Cesar Azpilicueta has been on a rapid decline, while Davide Zappacosta has just not cut it at Stamford Bridge.

Bearing that in mind, Sarri would be crazy to overlook Reece James next term after the incredible campaign he has been having in the Championship with Wigan Athletic.

And thankfully, to the relief of Chelsea supporters, it does not look like that is going to be the case.

The Sun reports the Blues have rejected a £10m bid from Brighton for James, with the 19-year-old now being tipped to challenge Azpilicueta for that right-back position, a challenge he could so easily win.

Compared to the 29-year-old, James comes across as a much better fit for the way Sarri wants to play.

Technically, the Wigan loanee is a far superior footballer to Azpilicueta. To put things into perspective, his ability on the ball is so good that Paul Cook has been playing him in midfield.

Considering that ability, James is exactly the sort of player you want at right-back during attacks. Defensively, many will argue that Azpilicueta’s experience and 1v1 defending still makes him No.1, though.

But after a season where he has actually been poor in that area, as well as in attack, now looks the perfect time for him to make way for someone like James.

Therefore, insulting £10m bids like the one Brighton have reportedly made, must continue to be rejected.

James, an incredibly gifted footballer, is Chelsea’s present and future.

Tottenham would do very well to sign Youri Tielemans this summer

Who cares about the league when Tottenham have a serious chance of winning the Champions League?! As ever, Mauricio Pochettino has worked wonders this season but, should he lift the biggest trophy of them all, they better get building a statue.

Spurs weren’t given the slightest chance of winning the Champions League after a miserable group stage but now they’re in the semi-finals, anything is possible.

Just imagine it. Mouth-watering.

To think that they could mark their stadium opening by blessing it with a European trophy is unthinkable but thanks to those players on the pitch, it’s now a genuine possibility.

Still, not to be a buzzkill here, but although it could pan out to be a successful season without signing a player, those behind the scenes in North London will surely realise the need to strengthen this summer to improve their chances in all competitions next season.

The next phase of the project has to be to get back to challenging for the Premier League title, as well as making this stage of the continent’s elite competition a frequent home for the club. What’s the point in the stadium otherwise?

To that end, Youri Tielemans has massively impressed since joining Leicester on-loan and he is player that Tottenham have since taken real notice of, with Belgian outlet HLN claiming earlier this month that Spurs were continuing to track the star ahead of a potential £40m bidding war.

Furthermore, the Mirror reported last week that Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers was concerned about potentially losing the Monaco ace to the likes of Spurs or Manchester United.

Tielemans, (who is valued at £19.8 million on Transfermarkt) could be seen as the replacement Spurs never got for Mousa Dembele, as the fellow Belgium international moved to China in the January window. Indeed, he’s shown an impressive level of quality since his move to the Foxes, looking great in his debut against Spurs at Wembley a few months ago.

The centre of midfield is sure to be an area that Tottenham improve upon this summer and Youri Tielemans is without a doubt the ideal signing for them to make. With Premier League and international experience already under his belt at the age of 21, Tottenham can be sure he would make a significant impact should they sign him.

Although his Leicester loan spell has been brief, Tielemans has been sensational.

With two goals and five assists, the Belgian youngster has shown exactly why he is destined for great things now and in the future.

Do you agree that Youri Tielemans would make a good signing for Tottenham? If not, why not? Join the discussion by commenting below…
