With the Premier League firmly heading towards the business end of its campaign, time is running out for Leeds United’s Gaetano Berardi to make his long-awaited comeback from injury and finally taste a bit of top-flight football.

The Switzerland international has been out of action since last summer after picking up an ACL injury versus Derby County in the Championship, with the Whites making the incredibly classy gesture of handing him a one-year contract extension to provide him with a bit of support while he recovers.

Berardi is the club’s longest-serving first-team player since initially arriving from Serie A side Sampdoria back in 2014 and has played 155 games, but given recent reports linking the club with a move for Nicolas Nkoulou this summer, it appears his time at Elland Road may be coming to an end.

It’s been suggested that Nkoulou – who played under Marcelo Bielsa at Marseille – is a target the Leeds boss personally wants, with the Cameroon international set to be available on a free transfer once his own contract comes to an end.

The 30-year-old’s arrival would further add to the Whites’ centre-back ranks, and it’s certainly an area where Bielsa has a number of different options at his disposal when everybody is fully fit and firing.

He can call upon the likes of: Liam Cooper, Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Luke Ayling, Pascal Struijk and even Leif Davis, and so Nkoulou’s arrival would further push Berardi onto the side-lines.

At 32, Berardi is in the twilight of his career, and given the seriousness of his knee injury, it’s difficult to see how he will ever get back to his powerful best for Leeds.

Clearly, the Swiss ace is still a major presence in the squad, with Bielsa himself declaring that “his opinion is one the changing room listens to, and also the staff.”

Indeed, The Athletic’s Phil Hay delivered an insight into Berardi’s influence at Elland Road, revealing: “People at Leeds try to make the point that Bielsa sees Berardi as a fundamentally good footballer who is easy to coach and easy to direct. Bielsa admires his discipline.”

But with Nkoulou’s possible arrival, the writing may well be on the wall for Berardi when his current contract comes to an end.

After clinching a superb 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road at the weekend, Aston Villa make the trip to Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Dean Smith’s side took home all three points thanks to a first-half goal from Anwar El Ghazi, and with tonight’s opponents currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table, back-to-back wins is very much on the cards.

The Villa boss could look to freshen things up slightly both in midfield and in attack, and with that in mind, below is a look at how Smith’s side might line up when they take on the Blades.

In goal, Emiliano Martinez can close the gap on Manchester City shot-stopper Ederson in the race for the Premier League’s Golden Glove award, with the Argentine just two clean sheets behind.

The back-four should also remain unchanged, with veteran full-back Ahmed Elmohamady once again filling in for the injured Matty Cash.

Both Marvelous Nakamba and Jacob Ramsey – who was outstanding in particular against Leeds – should keep their places in midfield, but January signing Morgan Sanson is surely now pushing for his first start in the top-flight after yet another cameo at the weekend.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Sheffield United, Smith said: “If you throw people in they can find it hard very early and it can hamper them for the rest of their progression. I’ve been lucky I’ve been able to feed him in gradually but he’s certainly ready to start games now and I know we’ve got a very good player on our hands.”

And in the front-line, the 46-cap Trezeguet could get his first start in a long while and replace Bertrand Traore on the right-hand side, with the Egyptian perfectly suited to combating the Blades’ wing-back system.

It would certainly be a bold call to make two key changes to his winning side, but Smith will want his players as fresh as possible given the quick turnaround in games.

Predicted XI: Martinez; Elmohamady, Konsa, Mings, Targett; Sanson, Nakamba, Ramsey; Trezeguet, Watkins, El Ghazi.

Airdrie manager Ian Murray has confirmed that winger Thomas Robert has had a trial with Celtic over the last two weeks, saying it is an ‘exciting’ time for the young talent amid links with the Hoops.

The 20-year-old, son of former Newcastle United star Laurent, was first linked with a move to Parkhead back in December when Neil Lennon was still leading the Celtic charge.

Nick Hammond reportedly watched the youngster in League One action prior to the New Year, and it seems as if he’s had a successful stint in and around the Hoops squad in recent weeks.

Robert has made 14 senior appearances for Airdrie, scoring four times and providing two assists.

Thomas at Celtic

Talking to the Daily Record, Murray said:

“I can provide clarity on Thomas being in with Celtic and training with them.

It’s brilliant for him personally and brilliant for the club because it shows that we are doing something right.

It was a no-brainer to let him go on trial with Celtic. It was a chance for Thomas to showcase himself and train with top level players and coaches.

He was in a top level training environment which is second to none. He was working with top players and for any footballer, it’s an exciting time to do that.

It’s testament to Thomas, his teammates and the club because we are starting to build those connections.

We are taking young players in and improving them which is our model. Thomas has grabbed lots of headlines and he’s a great asset to us.

Thomas is now back with us, he’s been tested and trained with us yesterday. He’s adapted to everything that we’ve asked him to do exceptionally well.”

Transfer Tavern take

The Hoops joined a host of sides in the race for Robert’s services before the January window, and it appears as if they may be at the front of the queue following his Lennoxtown trial.

He’s out of contract at the end of the current season, so Celtic could well take Robert to Parkhead on a long-term basis for a minimal fee.

The Frenchman appears to fit the bill in regards to the club looking to lure top young talent ahead of the summer window. A deal for Liam Shaw is already tied up, while Wigan Athletic striker Kyle Joseph appears to be another player of interest.

Robert may well be another youngster to make the move to Celtic Park, and it seems as if he’s done his chances no harm during his trial in recent weeks, going off Murray’s comments.

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Dean Windass thinks that keeping their front-three fit could be the key to Tottenham’s top-four chances.

Jose Mourinho’s side looked down and out following five defeats across six matches in January and February, but three victories on the bounce before the loss to Arsenal has seen Spurs emerge as genuine Champions League contenders once more – they are currently six points adrift of fourth-placed Chelsea.

Having thrashed Burnley and then scrapped past Fulham, Tottenham made it nine points in eight days after putting four past Crystal Palace to move within touching distance of Chelsea.

Harry Kane and Gareth Bale both scored twice, whilst the final piece of their attacking trio, Heung Min Son, grabbed his third assist in as many games.

And with those three all in outstanding form at present, Windass admitted that keeping them fit could result in Spurs finishing in the top-four, although they may have suffered a dent to that with Son Heung-min going off injured against the Gunners.

He told Football FanCast:

“Mourinho doesn’t take any prisoners, like Dier at the back, he’s made a few mistakes and he’s dropped him. The players know if they don’t perform then he will take you out. But I think if they keep Gareth Bale fit and the front-three fit, then I think they can get in the top-four.”

It’s all about momentum at this time in the campaign, and Tottenham have that in abundance at present.

Bale, Son and Kane have started together four times this season, and Spurs have managed maximum points in each of those games.

If Mourinho can keep those three fit for the majority of the run-in, then this year might end in glory for the north London outfit, only weeks after their season appeared to be petering out into a mid-table finish.
