Maksimovic could be a West Ham bargain

West Ham United are in the race to seal Nikola Maksimovic in a free transfer this summer…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Plaza Deportivo, who claim the Irons are in a battle with La Liga outfit Valencia to sign the 29-year-old centre-back, whilst there’s also thought to be interest from Italy and Real Betis.

Maksimovic will be free to join whoever he wants next week when his contract finishes at Napoli, where he has been a regular presence for the past five seasons.

He’s currently valued at £9m by Transfermarkt, so it could certainly present some fantastic business for a team like West Ham, especially as manager David Moyes is said to be keen to bolster his central defensive options this window.

Absolute bargain

Given the need to strengthen areas right across the pitch, landing a vastly experienced defender could be an astute move to make.

The need for a new striker is perhaps paramount, whilst there is little depth in central midfield and at full-back, where injuries plagued the Hammers throughout 2020/21.

Capped 25 times by Serbia, the 6 foot 4 colossus would be a low-risk solution to Moyes’ needs. He has played 132 times in the Italian top-flight and 41 times across both European competitions, via Transfermarkt, something that cannot be said for much of the current squad.

In the past, he has been likened to former Manchester United brute Nemanja Vidic, which could suggest he’d be the perfect fit for Premier League football.

As would his average of at least 1.8 aerial duels won per game across the last two seasons whilst Maksimovic has also proven his ability on the ball, managing an impressive career average passing accuracy of 89.3%, via WhoScored.

It’s no wonder former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, who managed him at the Stadio San Paolo, dubbed him the “complete” defender. “He has no problems. I am satisfied, he is an excellent defender, complete, flexible and fast, he can play both centre-right and centre-left.”

Moyes must urge a move for the free agent next week, he won’t cost GSB a penny.

Why must Celtic sign Aaron Mooy?

When Ange Postecoglou signed on the dotted line as Celtic manager, there was a sentence the Australian muttered that will have had the Parkhead faithful dancing for joy.

He revealed pride in using academy players, suggesting they brought an extra sense of purpose to the football club.

That has been an area neglected by Neil Lennon and co in recent years but with players like Karamoko Dembele and Luca Connell coming through the ranks, it’s hard to ignore the young stars of tomorrow.

Celtic may need to move towards transitioning younger players into the first team, but they can’t ignore experience.

After all, following Scott Brown’s departure this summer, there is a void of experience, leadership and composure that’s been left behind.

Ismaila Soro looks like the Scot’s heir in waiting. The Ivorian has already proven to be a combative force in the middle of the park and if he can discover more consistency under the new boss, Premiership attackers will be fearing the worst.

He won more tackles (1.9 per game) than any other Hoops player to start more than one match last term, while his dominant European displays provided hope for the future.

As the Bhoys impressively beat Lille in the Europa League, the midfield general won a mind-boggling ten tackles.

If Soro gets more opportunities to start next season it will be interesting to see who plays in a pivot next to him. Liam Shaw has signed from Sheffield Wednesday but Callum McGregor had an impressive European Championships, scoring against Croatia.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-transfer-news-posetcoglou-ryan-delap-wyke” title= “Read the latest Celtic transfer news!”]

However, with Celtic requiring another experienced head in that area of the pitch, Postecoglou should turn to Aaron Mooy.

The Glasgow side had been considering an offer for James McCarthy who is now a free agent but the new manager’s head has been turned by the idea of linking up with Aaron Mooy again.

During Postecoglou’s reign as Australia manager, the pair worked alongside each other, a period of time where Mooy won 28 of his 42 caps for his country.

Coincidentally, the former Huddersfield and Brighton stalwart speaks highly of the coach. Speaking in an interview back in 2016, the midfielder said: “He’s a very good coach.

“The style that he wants to play is the way I like playing as well. I’m happy to be playing under him. He’s intimidating. But the way he wants to play football, I want to play like that as well.”

At the age of 30, Mooy is at an age where he still has plenty left in the tank, unlike Brown. The fact he’s playing in China may well suggest otherwise but it wasn’t long ago that he contributed 13 goals and 13 assists over four Premier League seasons.

As well as having the ability to dictate the tempo of a game, he is a ruthless tackler similarly to Soro. In his first top-flight campaign with Huddersfield, he won 2.8 tackles per game – more than the Ivorian last term.

Brown has always been a player who doesn’t shy away from the challenge but his form deteriorated in 2020/21. Replacing him with Mooy and lining the Aussie up alongside Soro could be a devastating combination for the new head coach.

Phil Tufnell Diary

I seem to be having a bit of a sabbatical at the moment with the Benson and Hedges Cup dominating the fixture list while I am excused duty in one-day cricket

02-May-2002I seem to be having a bit of a sabbatical at the moment with the Benson and Hedges Cup dominating the fixture list while I am excused duty in one-day cricket. But it was a pleasure to be able to sit back with my feet up watching the boys get off to such a convincing start to the one-day season. It’s all a bit disappointing in a way as I had just got into the swing of the season with a few wickets, and then the Benson and Hedges Cup comes along. I tend not to get selected for the one-day stuff and so there is a danger that I might lose a bit of rhythm. But I have a second team game here and there, do a bit of bowling in the nets and that sort of thing just to keep the eye in and turn the arm over and then keep the fingers crossed that the boys progress. There is always the chance that we’ll get a wicket that looks like it might turn, and then I’d probably get a game but, being early season, it’s usually seam-orientated. I must admit it all becomes a bit frustrating, especially after a good start to the season, but I’ll just have to keep myself in knick.Deep down, I want to be involved in all the matches, but I have to accept there is team balance to be taken into account, pitches, the weather and all that kind of stuff. As Embers is always keen to remind us, the only way we’re going to do well is by being a squad of players. It has become that, with the youngsters chipping in when more senior players get injured. It is a squad and we all have to get behind one another and push together in all the competitions. Before I took my little break, the ball was coming out of the hand well and I felt my game was in good order. Generally the mood is buoyant in the camp. Ashley Noffke has come in and looks a fine prospect. I’m pleased he’s on our side and not playing against us. It has been great to get two wins by getting 450 or so on the board and then enforcing the follow-on and bowling them out again. That’s the way to do it.It does mean some long stretches in the field, but I would rather do it that way than being on the end of 600 and chasing round the field all day. Eminently preferable to be bowling them out, getting a few wickets and finishing up with a win, I would say.It all goes to help me still thoroughly enjoy my cricket, and it’s great to get off to a good start. Mind you, we began in a similar way last year and couldn’t follow it through. This year the guys might be that little bit more experienced and hardened and we can push on forward right the way through to the end.Of course, it will be under the control of a new captain, because Angus Fraser has decided to retire. I think he was going to do so anyway at the end of the season, but this job opportunity came up and he decided it might not be around later and so he should go for it. I think he was a bit upset not to have been able to finish the season off, but everyone supports him in his decision. He’s been a fantastic servant to the club over a long, long time and I wish him well in everything he does. Provided, that is, he doesn’t write anything nasty about me once he’s got into the press box!I was sad to see the old boy go. I’ve changed next to the same spotty backside for the last 18 years with Middlesex and England and it was always reassuring to have my old mate around. We played a lot of cricket together and went along similar career paths. Furthermore, it means that I’m the old boy in the side now. Gussie was the last of that era, so now the mantle passes to me and I’m not quite ready to hang my boots up yet awhile. Now it’s my job to try to help out the new man, Andy Strauss, as it always is for senior players to help youngsters whether it’s batting, bowling or captaincy. If I see anything in the field or if he wants any advice, I’m there to help. That is something that happens anyway, but I will have a little more of a senior role now.I’ll enjoy that extra involvement and responsibility, because we have a very young side at the moment and one that is performing very well. They keep me on my toes and young at heart. I don’t think Andy will need that much help because he’s a shrewd and bright chap with his own ideas on how the game should be played. I think he’ll be powerful and dominant in his own right. I’ll be happy to help him wherever I might be needed.

India skittled for 102 at Barbados

The Indians dislike Barbados as much as they like Port of Spain – or possibly more

Anand Vasu02-May-2002The Indians dislike Barbados as much as they like Port of Spain – or possibly more. After being asked to bat, India were knocked out for 102, a score largely deriving from an innings of 48 from Sourav Ganguly. Mervyn Dillon, striking gold right from ball one, ended with four for 41. In response the West Indies were 33 for one when one rain stoppage too many put an end to the day’s play. The Indian innings bore all the markings of a procession – a funeral procession, if you like. Glum faces and a lot of silence, right from the very first ball of the match.A full, straight delivery from Dillon, angling in, got through the bat-pad gap and Shiv Sunder Das was clean-bowled for a golden duck. Das did not have to wait long in the changing rooms for his opening partner.A change of guard in the opening partnership meant that Wasim Jaffer came into the side to join Das. After edging one streaky boundary through the slips and punching one cleanly off the back foot to the point fence, Jaffer failed the test. Poking at one outside the off, Jaffer walked back to the pavilion as Dillon celebrated his removal of both openers.Sachin Tendulkar then dealt Indian fans a heavy blow, falling for a duck. When he played away from his body to give Pedro Collins his first wicket, caught behind by Ridley Jacobs, Tendulkar notched up ducks in consecutive innings for the first time in his 94-match career.Rahul Dravid, the man for the occasion when India collapse, began well, nudging the ball into the gaps in characteristic fashion. Just when he was looking good, however, with the score on 50, a complete misunderstanding cost the Indian vice-captain his wicket. Dravid could not have the comfort of glaring at his partner, though, for it was none other than his skipper. There was a series of calls, the usual “yes” and “no”, before a good throw from Shivnarine Chanderpaul saw Cameron Cuffy whip off the bails at the bowler’s end and Dravid (17) was found short of his crease.VVS Laxman, Man of the Match in India’s win at Port of Spain, played a loose shot. After making just one, Laxman played an airy drive away from his body, only to be bowled.Ajay Ratra, after being dropped by Carl Hooper at slip, made sure that the West Indian skipper did not have to rue his mistake for long. Dillon was the beneficiary as Ratra (1) edged a delivery through to the ‘keeper.Harbhajan Singh pulled one ball to the fence in characteristic fashion before attempting to repeat the shot with somewhat different results. Dillon was the man waiting at deep-backward square when Harbhajan (13) sent the ball straight into his hands.Zaheer Khan smacked one over-pitched Dillon delivery beautifully through covers but was undone by a sharp bouncer from Adam Sanford. Fending the ball off awkwardly, Zaheer only found Ramnaresh Sarwan at short-leg.At this point, Ganguly realised that there was little point in sticking around. Coming down the track to Dillon, he seared one ball through covers before taking the aerial route for maximum off the very next ball.Javagal Srinath did not last long, being trapped plumb in front by Dillon. The frequency of Ganguly’s risk-taking increased, and with it the slashes over the infield. One such attempt saw Dillon take a superbly-judged catch right on the edge of the point fence. That brought about the end of the Indian procession from wicket to pavilion. There is, in fact, a joke that does the rounds every time India are dismissed cheaply. “The batsmen are just going in to check if the markings have been done properly. Once they’re happy with the crease markings they’ll be back,” goes the quip. That certainly applied to many of the batsmen on display today. In the face of what can be described as disciplined bowling at best, the batting fell apart. One man, however, stood tall. Ganguly, with 48 (76 balls, three fours, one six), contributed almost half of India’s final tally of 102.The West Indies then proceeded to show that there was no devil in the wicket as they comfortably reached 33 for one when play was called off for the day. Stuart Williams (18), never the most convincing of openers, was the sole casualty, edging Zaheer Khan through to Jaffer in the slips.Chris Gayle, thumping the ball through the offside as only he can, had 14 to his name, while Ramnaresh Sarwan was yet to get off the mark. Thanks to several rain stoppages, only 46.1 overs were bowled on the day. No worries on that count though; there’s still plenty of time left in this match.

Southampton handed Delaney boost

A major update has emerged about Southampton target Thomas Delaney, regarding Dortmund’s stance on his future.

What’s the talk?

According to Sky Sports Germany, As relayed by Saints Extra and the EDP, Borussia Dortmund are ready to sanction a sale for Southampton target Thomas Delaney this summer, amid interest from the Saints, Crystal Palace and Norwich.

The report claims that Delaney would prefer a move to the Premier League over any other top division, handing a boost to the three English sides.

Wanyama 2.0

It’s time to say bye-bye to Mario Lemina this summer. Newcastle are reportedly keen on the Saints outcast and Martin Semmens needs topermanently axe him from the squad and put the funds towards a deal for Delaney ahead of next season to bolster Ralph Hasenhuttl’s squad. Lemina has had loan moves to Galatasaray and Fulham in recent seasons but it is now time to cash in on him and get him off the books for good to help fund a move for Delaney.

The Danish midfielder could be Victor Wanyama 2.0 at St. Mary’s with his exceptional defensive midfield talent, which is why Semmens must sanction a swoop for him immediately.

Wanyama was a midfield beast for the club during his time on the south coast. He averaged superb WhoScored ratings of 7.12 and 7.02 in his final two Premier League seasons at Southampton, before moving on to Tottenham in 2016. The Kenyan was a rock in the middle of the park as he averaged 5.4 tackles and interceptions in his final campaign in red and white.

Throughout his career, Delaney has proven himself to be adept at winning the ball back for his side. He has a career average of 3.5 tackles and interceptions per game across over 150 competitive appearances, which is only 0.2 lower than Wanyama’s career average. This suggests that he is of a similar quality to the former Saints star and could arrive this summer and be the enforcer in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s midfield.

After a 1-0 win over Hoffenheim last season, Dortmund director Michael Zorc hailed the “outstanding” performance of Delaney at centre-back. The 29-year-old was deployed at the back due to the club’s injury issues and caught the eye with an excellent display.

Zorc said:

“We really deserved to win the game. We had to replace Lukasz Piszczek early on, but Thomas Delaney did an outstanding job in central defence.

“The introductions of Haaland and Reus gave us an additional attacking push and we created many goalscoring opportunities. We should have put the game to bed earlier, but we did our job here very well. When you consider as well that we haven’t won here for so long, I’m very satisfied.”

These quotes only emphasise Delaney’s quality and show that he is versatile in terms of where he can play on the pitch. The £85k-per-week beast has played at centre-back, defensive midfield and central midfield over the past 12 months for club and country.

He could be a terrific addition to Hasenhuttl’s squad and could provide the same qualities that Wanyama did at St Mary’s.

Semmens needs to get Lemina out of his squad and needs to strike a deal for Delaney as soon as possible before Palace and Norwich are able to swoop in for him.

AND in other news, Semmens could strike gold for Saints with swoop for 5ft 6 starlet, Ralph would love it…
