Everton: Allan committed to Toffees

Everton midfielder Allan won’t be following Carlo Ancelotti out of the door at Goodison Park this summer.

Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli journalist Valter de Maggio says (via Sport Witness) that he’s spoken to the Brazilian, who reiterated his commitment to the club.

The lowdown

Allan moved to Merseyside last summer for a fee of £21.7million, penning a three-year contract (via BBC Sport).

He reunited with Ancelotti, who had managed him at Napoli from May 2018 until his sacking in December 2019.

BT Sport commentator Darren Fletcher described Allan as a ‘vital’ midfield presence for Everton, with Martin Keown labelling him ‘very important’.

The 30-year-old played 24 Premier League matches in his debut season, missing more than two months of action with a muscle injury at the turn of the year (via Transfermarkt).

Ancelotti left Everton at the start of June to return to Real Madrid, potentially igniting fears that the players he helped lure to Goodison would seek a way out.

The latest

Allan purportedly told De Maggio that he was still on ‘very good terms’ with Ancelotti but is equally ‘very happy’ at Everton.

“I can confess that I had the opportunity to speak with Allan,” the journalist said. “I asked him about his future also because [of the] rumours that they would like him at Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid.

“He has remained on very good terms with the Reggiolo coach. Allan revealed to me that his club will be Everton also because he is very happy there.”

The verdict

This will be a blessed relief for any Everton supporters who had put two and two together and braced themselves for Allan’s exit.

He carried out the defensive midfield role expertly this season, and you sense the Blues’ European ambitions in 2021/22 will partly hinge on his availability over the course of the campaign.

It remains to be seen, meanwhile, whether blockbuster 2020 addition James Rodriguez is still entirely committed now that Ancelotti is gone. Worryingly, he’s said to have fallen out with new boss Rafael Benitez in the past.

Hampshire 2nd XI recover to record comfortable win

Hampshire 2nd XI kicked off their One-Day Trophy campaign with an incredible 100-run victory over Glamorgan on the Nursery Ground of the Rose Bowl yesterday.

Iain Brunnschweiler22-May-2002Hampshire 2nd XI kicked off their One-Day Trophy campaign with an incredible 100-run victory over Glamorgan on the Nursery Ground of the Rose Bowl yesterday. After 45 minutes play, it didn’t look as though Hampshire would even make it to treble figures as they were left reeling at 17-5.Glamorgan’s chief destroyer was Alex Wharf, who took three quick wickets, and ex-Dorset bowler Owen Parkin took a couple. This crisis called for some serious character. Alex Morris started the rearguard with some sensible batting, but the star of the show was Irfan Shah, as he took the attack to the Welsh lads. The pair took the score past the hundred mark, with Shah driving and pulling any loose deliveries to the boundary.Morris was run out for 35. His partner continued with Damien Shirazi in another vaulable stand. Shah’s 62 and Shirazi’s 42 helped Hampshire to 201.James Schofield and James Hamblin then took up the task.Schofield ripped out 5-35, and Hamblin 3-36, as they completed the turn around with some brilliant seam bowling. That left a wicket apiece for Shah and Lawrie Prittipaul to wrap up the Glamorgan innings for just 92.

Wolves transfer update on Neves

Lots of Wolves fans have been flocking to a transfer update on Ruben Neves.

As per Italian football journalist and transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio, the Portugal international is currently the ‘favourite’ midfielder to join Arsenal if Granit Xhaka leaves for AS Roma, as there are ‘difficulties’ for them in trying to sign Manuel Locatelli, who would rather wait until Juventus make a move.

Neves has been a key player for the Midlands club ever since their promotion to the Premier League in 2018, averaging more tackles (2.4), interceptions (1.8), shots (1.9), passes (54.9) and long balls (5.3) per game in the top flight than both Leander Dendoncker and Joao Moutinho in the 2020/21 season (WhoScored).

At just 24 years of age, he could still have plenty to offer at Molineux, and Wolves supporters might certainly question selling him to a direct rival after losing Diogo Jota and Matt Doherty to Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur respectively last year.

West Indies A lose again despite Morton century

A blistering century from Runako Morton could not save West Indies A from a disappointing defeat against Kent in the cathedral city of Canterbury

Sean Beynon23-Jun-2002A blistering century from Runako Morton could not save West Indies A from a disappointing defeat against Kent in the cathedral city of Canterbury. Morton smashed 126, only to see the tourists’ competitive total of 257 overhauled with five balls to spare in an exciting finale. After an admirable effort from the batsmen, the West Indian bowlers gifted Kent an unlikely win. A regulation victory against British Universities and a scrambled win over Sussex is not much to show after an uninspiring start to the tour. They begin the first-class leg of the six-week visit against Derbyshire on Wednesday, looking for a return to winning ways.Morton, at least, was superb. The 23-year-old, who has struggled in his two ODI’s to date, took apart an inexperienced Kent attack after Daren Ganga had won another toss. He hit 11 fours and four sixes in his 133 ball knock, occupying the crease for a little over two hours. His effort was not to be enough on a beautiful summer’s day at Canterbury, the perfect setting for batsmen. Ed Smith (87) and Matthew Walker (75 not out) led the way, seizing on every opportunity given by an inaccurate attack.Kent raced to 84 for one in fifteen overs. Marlon Black and Reon King were particularly wayward, inexcusable from the international pairing. Black redeemed himself slightly by dismissing young talent James Hockley, but Kent were gifted nine boundaries in as many overs. Smith and James Tredwell (30) were severe on anything loose, adding 54 for the second wicket.Walker and Smith continued the attack with a workmanlike vigour. They added 105 for the third wicket, hitting seventeen boundaries between them. King, Tino Best, Gareth Breese and Dwayne Bravo were all too expensive, with six foot seven inch spinner Sulieman Benn (1-26) again the pick of the bowlers. Breese did at least remove Smith to put Kent under pressure. With the required rate climbing well above six, Walker crashed Best for a timely six to relieve the pressure. Geraint Jones (25) found the fence twice, Bravo not the man for such a tight situation. King returned, finding Jones’ edge, but too late. Victory was secured with a bye, a sloppy end.Earlier, West Indies made a dreadful start, losing Ganga to a mix-up from the first ball of the match. Devon Smith (25) and Donovan Pagon (16) stopped panic setting in, before a double change bought wickets for James Tredwell (1-32) and James Golding (3-58).Bravo (40) joined Morton, as the pair increased the run-rate, reservingtheir harshest punishment for Jamie Hewitt, whose four overs cost 40. Bravo was again impressive, the 18-year-old Trinidadian accumulating runs, a lofted six his only extravagance. The stand had reached 98 before he became Golding’s second victim, trapped plumb leg before.Morton continued apace, dispatching bad balls with a refreshing flamboyance. He appears have taken his second chance after disciplinary lapses led to him being expelled from the St. Georges Academy last year.Breese (15) and 17-year-old Lendl Simmons (15 not out) added runs at the death, with Morton dismissed from the final ball of the innings. The visitors had reached an eminently defendable target, and would have ensured victory if they had not lapsed so badly with the ball.
