– A primeira pessoa a entrar no campo fui eu. Falei: ‘O jogo no momento não me importa.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s outstanding performance in the second Test against Australia, in Antigua, which helped secure West Indies a draw, has lifted him to a career-best position of No. 5 in the world rankings.Chanderpaul was twice unbeaten in the match, for 107 and 77, and claimed the Man-of-the-Match award as West Indies kept alive their hopes of squaring the series, although the Frank Worrell Trophy is now safely back with Australia. Chanderpaul’s double continues a prolific run of form, following on from his 118 in the first Test, and he currently averages 156.50 in the series. In the past 12 months he has played nine Tests and scored 1,062 runs at 106.20, including five centuries on away tours to England and South Africa as well as this home series against Australia.Chanderpaul is now level with South Africa’s Jacques Kallis and just three points behind Mohammad Yousuf. Michael Hussey currently holds the No.1 spot, followed by Ricky Ponting and Kumar Sangakkara.West Indies’ captain Ramnaresh Sarwan just missed out on a return to the top 20 in after his fifth-day century. Sarwan scored 65 in the first innings and then 128 in the second and that performance has lifted Sarwan back to 21st place. From the Australians, Simon Katich is the most significant mover following his first-innings century and has climbed 12 places to 56th.After missing the first Test through injury, Jerome Taylor has climbed back into the top 20 of the bowling rankings. He took five wickets in the match – including Ponting in both innings – and moved up 12 places in the tightly packed rankings. It is the highest ranking of Taylor’s 19-match career and he is now just three points behind Matthew Hoggard in 13th spot, who is currently trying to force his way back into the England side.Brett Lee strengthened his position in fourth spot and is also holding the highest rating of his career. Lee was the outstanding bowler in Antigua, with match-figures of 8 for 110, on a docile surface. This included a destructive burst of reverse-swing in the first innings. He is closing the gap on team-mate Stuart Clark, who is currently occupying third spot.Muttiah Muralittharan is still in first position with Dale Steyn just behind him. With Sri Lanka hosting India in a Test series next month and South Africa playing in England around the same time, those two will be jostling for top place.

– A torcida do Bahia sempre surpreende positivamente. O Bahia jogou futebol no primeiro tempo, no segundo tempo.

Southampton linked with Alexander Sorloth

Southampton have been linked with a move for RB Leipzig striker Alexander Sorloth recently, and the Norwegian could be a big upgrade in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s attack.

What’s the word?

Following Danny Ings’ shock move to Aston Villa earlier this month, it appears that Southampton are in a hurry to add a new striker to their squad ahead of their Premier League opener against Everton on Saturday.

The Athletic have claimed that the 25-year-old Sorloth is one of the names they are considering as a replacement for the England international, with Hasenhuttl said to be a fan of the former Crystal Palace man.

Would Sorloth be an upgrade on Southampton’s current options?

Following Ings’ departure, Hasenhuttl is looking desperately low on goalscorers in his current squad, with Che Adams yet to hit double figures in the league since his arrival from Birmingham City.

Whilst Nathan Tella and Michael Obafemi have both impressed in attacking roles in pre-season, neither can be expected to fill the void left by Ings, who hit 34 goals in the previous two Premier League campaigns.

Sorloth has experience in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, where he managed just one goal and one assist in 24 appearances in the Eagles.

However, he enjoyed a sensational run of form when on loan with Trabonzspor in the 2019/20 season, managing 33 goals and 11 assists in 49 appearances for the Turkish side, which earned him a move to RB Leipzig.

After one season with the Bundesliga side, in which he managed six goals and three assists in 37 appearances, it seems as if he could be on the move once again this summer, and he could be a big upgrade to the current options available to Hasenhuttl, provided he doesn’t replicate his previous form with Crystal Palace.

The £14.4m-rated forward won a lot of plaudits during his time in Turkey, with his Norway teammate Erling Haaland singing his praises in 2020, dubbing him the “King of the North” on Instagram.

At 6ft 4in, Sorloth would certainly give Hasenhuttl a very different option up front, and would free up the possibility of sending more crosses into the box and more long balls forward, which is something they struggled to do last season when deploying a partnership of Ings and Adams.

Whilst the 25-year-old might never be a prolific Premier League striker, he could help to increase the output of someone like Adams, so he could be well worth the money if Southampton do bring him to St Mary’s this summer.

Vaughan's knee alarms England

Michael Vaughan has given England cause for concern ahead of the first Test against South Africa at Lord’s on July 10

Cricinfo staff02-Jul-2008Michael Vaughan has given England cause for concern ahead of the first Test against South Africa at Lord’s on July 10, after he was forced to sit out the final session of Yorkshire’s eight-wicket defeat against Durham at Headingley because of soreness in his right knee – the same one that has required four bouts of surgery and which forced him out of the game for the whole of 2006.According to The Yorkshire Post, Vaughan was seen flexing his knee while fielding on Monday afternoon, but the problem did not seem to hinder him during a fluent 72 in Yorkshire’s second innings. He was later seen clutching an ice-pack to the joint, but according to the county’s director of cricket, Martyn Moxon, there is no question that Vaughan will have to miss the Lord’s Test.”It’s difficult to say too much,” said Moxon. “Michael has a [pre-arranged] press conference on Friday, and he’ll outline his position then, but he has one or two body issues. His knee is a bit sore, but there’s no danger of him missing the Test match. He’s got a few niggles and I just think he needs a bit of time to let those niggles settle.”Vaughan has been withdrawn from Yorkshire’s squad for the Friends Provident semi-final against Essex on Saturday, but according to his team-mate, Darren Gough, who also underwent career-saving knee surgery in 2002, soreness was only to be expected. “His knee is stiff, but that’s what happens when you’ve had four or five operations,” he told The Guardian. “He’ll be fine.”

Ricky Ponting expects Australia to win their ODI series against West Indies but there is more at stake for his team than a simple five-match contest. Of greater importance than the immediate results will be what Australia learn about their new group of fringe players, some of whom could soon become permanent members of the team. They have not played a one-day international since losing the CB Series to India in March, so this will be their first outing without the newly retired Adam Gilchrist and Brad Hogg available for selection. They are also missing the injured Matthew Hayden, who at 36 has shown no indication of quitting limited-overs cricket but is unquestionably in the twilight years of his career.Making do without key squad members could become more frequent for Australia, who have a hectic schedule over the next 12 months. First they will prepare to defend their title at the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in September and that will be followed by a Test tour of India, home series against New Zealand and South Africa and Test trips to South Africa and England.”I know the selectors and Cricket Australia are very conscious of our workload, and we’ve got some big series coming up,” Ponting told . “The selectors are very mindful of making sure that we’ve got the best players on the paddock for those big series, and I think in the next 12 to 18 months you’ll probably see more players having a break when we feel it’s appropriate.”That will almost certainly mean more opportunities for players like Shaun Marsh, David Hussey and Cameron White, who will be trialed in the West Indies one-dayers. Marsh and Shane Watson are likely to be the first opening combination tested but there is also an important bowling role up for grabs – that of a specialist spinner to replace Hogg. Ponting wants White to step up in the Caribbean.”There’s no question that the spin bowling department in both forms of the game for us is going to be a challenge,” Ponting said. “White’s obviously been picked as the spinner on this tour. We just need to keep exposing him to different situations and putting him under a bit more pressure. Hopefully he plays a big role for us during the series.”It is a big ask of White, whose legspin was eagerly watched when he started his state career at 17, but he has since turned into a middle-order batsman who bowls a bit. He is not Victoria’s first-choice spinner in any form of the game and in nine domestic one-day matches last summer he picked up six wickets at 51.16 with an economy rate of 5.01.Should he struggle with the ball, Australia might have to think about another domestic slow bowler, or instead make greater use of part-timers like Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds. At least if the openers fail there are plenty of others lining up to take those spots, including Clarke and James Hopes. These are the questions Australia are hoping the ODI series, which begins in St Vincent on Tuesday, will go some way to answering.Regardless of Australia’s evolving line-up and the fact that West Indies should regain Chris Gayle, Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivarine Chanderpaul, who all missed Friday’s Twenty20 international, Ponting expects his side to triumph. “It was a tough contest in the Test matches, and the shorter the format, often the tighter the competition is,” Ponting said.”If Gayle is fit for the one-dayers he obviously adds a lot to their side. Their bowling group will be pretty steady for the one-dayers, but in saying that our one-day side stacks up pretty well against most around the world. I’d expect us to win the series that’s for sure.”West Indies’ team manager Omar Khan said Sarwan’s groin injury was about 70% healed and they were keen to add him to the side that beat Australia in the Twenty20 match. However, West Indies know it would be foolish to take any chances if there is a possibility Sarwan will exacerbate the problem.”Any team having three players like Gayle, Sarwan and Chanderpaul coming in will be boosted tremendously and the team will be going into the opening clash a confident bunch,” Khan told . “We are not going to risk any of our players who are injured because this is a five-match series and we want the best out of the players.”

Birmingham City: Cosgrove departs on loan

Birmingham City have recently announced that Sam Cosgrove has left the club to sign for League One side Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan deal.

What’s the story?

The 24-year-old signed for Birmingham back in January 2021, having caught the eye with a number of impressive performances at Aberdeen.

The forward netted 47 goals in 103 appearances for the Scottish outfit, which saw him earn a move to St Andrew’s Stadium on a three-and-a-half-year deal.

Cosgrove has found regular game time hard to come by with Birmingham though, in what has been a frustrating move for him to date, whilst also not being the ideal scenario for the club’s supporters, who would have hoped that he could replicate his strong showings in front of goal from his days in Aberdeen.

He’s since moved to Shrewsbury Town on a season-long loan deal, and will be hoping he can make a good impression away from Birmingham this term.

It’s the ideal move for all parties involved

There were high hopes for Cosgrove when he first signed for Birmingham and you can understand why, with the striker having an impressive record in front of goal whilst with Aberdeen.

However, for one reason or another, he hasn’t hit the heights originally expected of him, with Cosgrove failing to score in 12 appearances for the Blues during the 2020/21 season.

He hadn’t been included in the matchday squad for Lee Bowyer’s side this term, which dropped a sizeable hint that his future could lie elsewhere.

Lee Bowyer already has strong options available to him though, with Scott Hogan and Lukas Jutkiewicz showing that they can perform to a high standard in the Championship, and they’ve got the ideal backups pushing them for their starting places in the team with Chuks Aneke and Jonathan Leko.

Therefore, the writing was pretty much on the wall for Cosgrove, who is valued at £1.35million according to Transfermarkt. He’ll be hoping he can make a positive impact for Shrewsbury, as they look to build on a 17th-place finish in the League One standings last term.

Birmingham City’s supporters are likely to feel as though the club have made the right call in sending Cosgrove out on loan, as he wouldn’t have been featuring for the Blues’ first-team anytime soon, so it makes sense for him to further his development in English football with a temporary move elsewhere this summer.
