Tait's return gives Australia the edge

Kanishkaa Balachandran previews the final of the A Team Triangular Series

Competitions between India and Australia have, in the recent past, been compared to other legendary rivalries in cricket. Australia have just landed in India to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but their A side, set to depart the country, also have much to play for. In the pre-series build-up to Australia’s Test tour, it’s only fitting that Australia A and India A find themselves in the final of the tri-series starting tomorrow and followers will expect nothing less than a cracking contest. The first encounter, in Hyderabad, was forgettable for the hosts as they were vanquished by a superior all-round effort from the Australians. The second meeting, in Chennai on Wednesday, was reduced to a dead rubber but India bounced back to level the score despite suffering a few hiccups on the way.The crucial difference between the two results was Shaun Tait. On a comeback trail after a self-imposed break from the game, Tait’s swing and extra zip – his stock delivery – sparked India’s top-order wobble and his 3 for 27 off nine overs dictated the result. India had to make amends for the defeat and they did so, taking advantage of his absence for the final game yesterday in chasing down 273. Though Mark Cameron kept the batsmen in check with his speed, his support seamers leaked more than six an over, thereby emphasising why Tait is so important to the equation. Whether or not India find an answer to Tait remains to be seen; he’s all set to return after a rest, though it’s uncertain who he will replace. The ‘Test’ leg of the tour was initially meant as a selection trial for the Australian Test squad and while only a select few managed to make it, the rest have used this tri-series as a warm-up for the Sheffield Shield which starts in less than a month’s time. Simon Helmot, the A team coach, said the players have had to battle some of the toughest conditions, taking the humidity into account.”We’re very pleased with the competition through this tour,” Helmot said. “Both India and New Zealand have pushed us and the players are refreshed for the final.”Australia had experimented with the batting line-up on Wednesday, promoting Adam Voges and Marcus North to open, but Helmot said they would revert to their regular duo of Phillip Hughes and Luke Ronchi. Hughes, in fact, did well for himself at No. 7, scoring a brisk unbeaten 49 to lift Australia in the final overs.India, on the other hand, are yet to solve their opening woes. Crucially, Robin Uthappa and Swapnil Asnodkar have yet to justify their selection. They have managed only 33 and 23 runs respectively but the one under immense pressure is undoubtedly Uthappa. He fell to a poor shot after a sound start against New Zealand last week and yesterday lost his off stump to Cameron after punishing the same bowler past mid-on for a sparkling boundary. However, Dav Whatmore, the India A coach, threw his support behind Uthappa. “It is unfortunate that he hasn’t had the best of moments in this series but he’s experienced enough to work his way back into form quickly,” he said. The Indians also experimented with their bench strength for the final league game but Whatmore was non-committal on the final line-up.The unexpected postponement of the Champions Trophy left a huge gap in the international cricket calendar. Under normal circumstances, the final would have been overshadowed by the events in Pakistan but the bunch of hopefuls now find themselves thrust in the spotlight, thereby giving this series the higher profile it deserves.India A (probable): 1 Jaydev Shah, 2 Robin Uthappa, 3 DB Ravi Teja, 4 Suresh Raina (capt), 5 Rohit Sharma, 6 Yusuf Patha, 7 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 Piyush Chawla, 10 Praveen Kumar, 11 Dhawal Kulkarni.Australia A (probable) 1 Luke Ronchi (wk), 2 Phillip Hughes 3 David Hussey, Cameron White (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Marcus North, 7 Adam Voges, 8 Ashley Noffke, 9 Xavier Doherty, 10 Brett Geeves/Mark Cameron, 11 Shaun Tait.

Oval ball to red ball in Pacific Islands

The sporting landscape of Fiji and Samoa is dominated by the oval ball, but for the next two weeks the focus will be on a little red object as the MCC arrive for a six-match tour

Cricinfo staff06-Oct-2008The sporting landscape of Fiji and Samoa is dominated by the oval ball, but for the next two weeks the focus will be on a little red object as the MCC arrive for a six-match tour. The 14-man squad includes three county players – Glamorgan’s Mike Powell, Gloucestershire’s Tom Stayt and Worcestershire’s Josh Knappett – and the tour will also include coaching sessions in Suva. The MCC will donate US$2,500 to both the Fijian and Samoan cricket associations and the ICC will give US$1,250 to each country.Bob Baxter, a ten-time MCC tourist, will manage the trip. “This tour gives us a wonderful opportunity to represent the club both in the quality of our play but also in the way we conduct ourselves,” he said. “We’re looking forward to some good competitive cricket, played in the right spirit.”Stayt, a right-arm medium-pace bowler, is looking forward to some action after a 2008 season hit by injury. “It was frustrating to end the season fully fit and still raring to go,” he said. “This MCC tour gives me a great opportunity to keep my momentum going as I look to impress the coaching team at Gloucestershire ahead of next season.”The tour opens with the first of three 50-over matches against a Samoan XI at the Garden Oval, in Tuanaimato, then the tour moves to Fiji for three further games.

Crystal Palace linked to Weston McKennie

Crystal Palace are one of three Premier League sides reportedly keen to secure the services of Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie this summer.

What’s the story?

According to Italian outlet Tuttosport (as relayed by Sport Witness), the Eagles are ‘determined’ to land the highly-rated 22-year-old in the final few days of the current window, although they’re expected to face stiff competition from a couple of Premier League rivals.

Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur are also credited with an interest in McKennie, and the report states that a swap deal with Spurs for midfielder Moussa Sissoko is an option for Juve.

The capital club are said to want the USA international, courtesy of new director of football Fabio Paratici, who took him to Turin on a permanent basis last year and remains a big fan of the box-to-box dynamo.

Juventus are thought to be open to a swap deal involving Sissoko as he would fit into Max Allegri’s side far more comfortably than the Texan, although Palace and Villa are closely monitoring the situation.

Fans would be delighted

Although McKennie is not believed to be particularly keen on a move to either Villa Park or Selhurst Park, Juventus are aware that the £22.5m-rated youngster can raise them significant funds, meaning an imminent exit could occur.

His arrival in south London is one that would surely delight the Palace supporters, given his potential and past endeavours for the Old Lady and Schalke.

During his time at the Bundesliga outfit, McKennie earned praise from several impressed onlookers following a string of mature performances despite his tender years, including forme manager David Wagner.

“He has embraced this role of taking on more responsibility on the pitch,” commented Wagner, reviewing McKennie’s endeavours in 2019/20 (as relayed by Bundesliga.com). “He is a leader.”

After arriving at the Allianz Arena in a shock move 12 months ago, the American scored six goals and provided two assists in 46 appearances for Juve as they limped to a third-place finish in Serie A.

However, new manager Allegri has reportedly deemed him surplus to requirements, and Palace could potentially be the team to benefit.

It’s not often the Eagles get the opportunity to pick up a talented prodigy from one of European football’s heavyweights, and therefore, chairman Steve Parish must swoop before one of their domestic rivals snaps McKennie up from under their noses.

And, in other news…Parish must sanction Crystal Palace move for £10.8m-rated gem, Vieira needs him

Chandigarh look to regain momentum

Cricinfo previews the clash between Chandigarh Lions and Royal Bengal Tigers

Big PictureThe advantage that Chandigarh have going into the match is that they have played two less games than the three other teams locked on four points. However, the exclusion of Chris Cairns and Dinesh Mongia from the squad might weigh heavily on their minds during this crucial stage of the tournament.A win against the in-form Royal Bengal Tigers in their fourth match will not only be a confidence booster but will ensure valuable points to help the ICL 20-20 domestic tournament winners seal a spot in the semis. While the wins in the first two games against the two extremes of the table – Mumbai and Chennai – were relatively close encounters, they were brought down to earth by a ruthless Hyderabad outfit the last time around as Jimmy Maher and Abdul Razzaq hardly broke a sweat to ease to a nine-wicket win.Bengal have been enjoying a rich vein of form with the only blip coming against the Ahmedabad Rockets. Even though they were crushed by ten wickets, they bounced back in the very next game against the Dhaka Warriors to affirm their supremacy at the top of the table. The Bengal squad seems to be one, strong cohesive unit with every player putting up stellar performances in at least one match. If Hamish Marshall and Craig McMillan shared the limelight before, sparkling performances by Deep Dasgupta and Rohan Gavaskar have hogged the latest headlines.Where they rankChandigarh, in sixth position with four points, won’t be too bothered having played the least number of games among the teams. However, they will be looking to enter the elite four and will look for points on the way, especially with games against their nearest rivals coming up.Bengal, in second position with eight points, are certainly the favourites for the title. They will want to break free from Hyderabad in third place and narrow the gap with Chennai at the top to possibly ensure an easier pick for the semis.Form guide (most recent match first) Chandigarh Lions: LWW
Royal Bengal Tigers: WLWWWStatsBengal’s Deep Dasgupta is top of the wicketkeeping charts along with Khalid Mahmood (Lahore) and Paul Nixon (Delhi) with the most number of dismissals – three catches and four stumpings.None of the Chandigarh batsman have scored a half-century in the tournament so far, the highest being 47 by Dinesh Mongia against Chennai in the second game.Players to watchHis economy rate is yet to cross the six-an-over mark in the three matches so far. A disciplined bowler first, Andrew Hall is an extremely capable batsman which makes him one of the most sought-after players for the shorter formats. He is expected to come good in this last round of matches as Chandigarh look to bag the second piece of silverware this season.
Among the more illustrious stars of the international galaxy like Marshall, McMillan, Upul Chandana and Lance Klusener, there has been one performer who has quietly been doing the job for Bengal. Paceman Eklak Ahmid is just behind Chandana in the wicket-taking charts with six wickets and more is expected from the promising left-arm seamer who has delivered the goods whenever he has played. The only time he didn’t, Bengal were mauled by Ahmedabad.Quotes”Now that we’ve all played a fair amount of Twenty20 cricket, we know each other’s game and we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. Barker told he can leave Rangers

According to Football Insider, Glasgow Rangers winger Brandon Barker has been told he can leave Ibrox before the end of the transfer window.

The Lowdown: Not long left

There are just a matter of hours left before the transfer window slams shut.

With John Lundstram (rangers.co.uk), Fashion Sakala and Juninho Bacuna all making the move to the 55-time Scottish champions, there may not be many more new arrivals, but outgoings still look likely.

The Latest: Barker told he can leave

As per this latest report, Barker has been told he can leave the club today, with sources at Ibrox informing Football Insider.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the season (Transfermarkt), so he may have played his last game for the club even if the move is only a loan.

The Verdict: Makes sense

This is a move that makes sense for all involved. Barker has made just 26 appearances for Rangers in all competitions since making the move to Ibrox, joining Oxford United on loan last season after he couldn’t nail down a spot in Steven Gerrard’s starting XI.

However, he is a player that still has potential. He was called “one of the best” by Andy Halliday in regards to his performances in training at Rangers (via This is Futbol), while three goals and four assists in 19 League One appearances at Oxford displayed his ability – he had five strikes in total, mustering up 12 goals throughout his senior career. Surely there will be a suitor for him between now and the deadline.

In other news, this former Ger could make a shock transfer.
