Alan Nixon drops Seny Dieng transfer claim

The asking price of Queens Park Rangers goalkeeper Seny Dieng has been revealed.

What’s the talk?

According to Alan Nixon’s report for The Sun on Sunday (via The 72), Mark Warburton has set the asking price for the in-demand QPR shot-stopper, whom Arsenal, Crystal Palace, Leed United and Sheffield United were all linked with this summer, at £12m.

However, Nixon continued by stating that the Rs would command a larger fee than £12m should a rival Championship side wish to sign the 26-year-old – something which is more than likely aimed at Sheffield United.

Fans will be buzzing

With Warburton having overseen arguably the most impressive transfer window of any Championship side this summer – with the Rs bringing in the likes of Andre Dozzell, Stefan Johansen, Charlie Austin, Jordy de Wijs, Sam Field, Sam McCallum, Andre Gray and Jimmy Dunne amongst others – as well as a rather remarkable start to QPR’s 2021/22 Championship campaign – with the club remaining unbeaten over their opening five fixtures of the season and currently sitting third in the second tier standings – things are certainly looking on the up at the Kiyan Prince Foundation stadium at present.

This is something that is only strengthened by Nixon’s recent report regarding the 58-year-old’s asking price for Dieng, as the ‘keeper has played a crucial role in the Rs’ impressive start to the new season.

Indeed, over his five Championship appearances so far this season, the £900k-rated shot-stopper has kept two clean sheets and has made an average of 3.2 saves per game.

These returns have seen the man Warburton himself dubbed an “outstanding” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking the 26-year-old as the club’s seventh-best performer in the second tier this term.

As such, considering how important the £4k-per-week Dieng appears to be within the QPR side, the fact that the club are not willing to let the goalkeeper leave the club unless it is for a substantial fee is sure to have left Rs fans buzzing – as it would very much seem that, if Warburton is to have any hope of securing promotion from the Championship this season, the Senegal international will play a key role in QPR doing so.

Rivalry needs a boost in series-decider

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy heads for a climax with much more at stake than the bragging rights in cricket’s most enthralling current rivalry

Start time 9.30am (0400 GMT)Big Picture The Border-Gavaskar Trophy heads for a climax with much more at stake than the bragging rights in cricket’s most enthralling current rivalry. The events of the next five days in Nagpur will be watched with keen interest not just in Mumbai and Melbourne but in London and Lahore and across the cricket world. Apart from a flurry of celebrations and farewells, there are two key questions: Do Australia have the mettle to perform under this intense pressure? And will India’s new captain, now in a permanent role, apply his usual attacking instincts when a draw will give him the series?Australia have been restrained so far but now is the time to let loose all inhibitions because there is only one way they can take the trophy back with them. Those who have seen them play catch-up ever since Bangalore feel more than just the trophy may slip out of their hands: their supremacy is clearly on the line. But the cricket, and the contest, hasn’t been of the highest quality and intensity. Only the Bangalore draw has so far lived up to what we have come to expect of India-Australia clashes. While Bangalore was tantalising, Mohali was too one-sided, and Delhi was dead once India started dropping catches on the fourth day.The Kotla pitch didn’t help matters, and the pitch at the new stadium in Nagpur is an unknown quantity. That shifts the focus to India’s approach going into the final match with a one-match lead. On the last two occasions they led 1-0, they looked to defend the lead, and not double it. At The Oval in 2007, not only did India not enforce the follow-on but also took their time in setting a target. In Bangalore, against Pakistan in 2007-08, the declaration came too late on a crumbling final-day pitch.India have enough distractions they need to stay clear of: this is Sourav Ganguly’s last Test, VVS Laxman’s 100th, and Gautam Gambhir, the leading run-scorer in the series, has been ruled out for the match. It’s not even been three days since India’s most successful bowler, and the first-choice captain for the series, Anil Kumble, retired. As a result, Mahendra Singh Dhoni will perhaps for the first time attend the team meeting as Test captain. On the last two occasions he captained – winning both times – he came to know of Kumble’s absence only on the morning of the match. It will be interesting how he changes from being a stop-gap captain to a full-time one.Australia, too, enter new territory as they go into the last match knowing the best possible result will amount only to a drawn series. Since the 1999 series, when they drew against West Indies by winning the last Test in Antigua, this is only their second such experience. In the 2005 Ashes, England held on to a tense draw, and their 2-1 lead, at The Oval. This is also a series during which Australia are coming face to face with the limitations that the retirements last year left them with. Apart from Mohali, their batsmen have stood up well enough to make sure they don’t lose despite a blunt-looking bowling attack. Especially heartening will be Matthew Hayden’s return to form during the Delhi Test. Three out of their top five have managed a century each, and Shane Watson has been handy at No.6. But if Australia are to draw this series on a pitch that will most likely be to India’s liking, their bowlers will have to turn up, individually and collectively as a unit. Twenty wickets will not be easy for this attack, and therein lies Australia’s test of character. The winds of change are very much in swing, and this Australian team wouldn’t want to be blown away.Form guide (last 5 Tests)India DWDLW
Australia DLDWDWatch out forIt’s time the real Brett Lee stood up. He has taken seven wickets at 57.71, and has not even managed to keep the run-flow down. This has been a severe dent to the reputation he came with: that of being the best pace bowler in the world. With two of the Fab Five gone, the focus now sits on Rahul Dravid, who has looked good almost every time he has come to bat in this series, but his best effort remains 51 he scored in Bangalore. In his last 10 Tests, he has averaged 29.50, with only one century – on a flat Chennai pitch against South Africa.Sourav Ganguly couldn’t have planned it better. He will play his last Test in Nagpur, the site of his supposed beginning of end. While he has scored a century already, and is No. 5 on the run-getters’ list, don’t rule out yet another parting shot.Harbhajan Singh makes a comeback to the side after an injured toe kept him out in Delhi. This is an important match for him: from now on he will be India’s leading spinner, and not for a one-off Test. He will like that he starts his new innings against Australia. Harbhajan is also just one short of the 300-wickets mark. The difference between Australia in Mohali and Australia in Delhi was Matthew Hayden. More than the runs he scored, his return to form had an uplifting effect on the rest of the batsmen. What’s more, one could sense he had just started.Team newsM Vijay, the Tamil Nadu opener, who had a successful Ranji season last year and scored a double-century in the season-opener this year, has left that match mid-way to get his Test cap. Dhoni said in his pre-match conference that Vijay will open the innings. Harbhajan, too, makes a comeback, to take Kumble’s place. India won’t be fiddling around with the rest of the combination.India 1 M Vijay, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 Sourav Ganguly, 6 VVS Laxman, 7 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Amit Mishra, 11 Ishant Sharma.Jason Krejza could make his debut, but the important question, in case he comes into the side, is whose place does he take? Although the three fast bowlers haven’t put Australia in winning situations, it could be difficult to drop any of them. Mitchell Johnson has been their leading wicket-taker, Brett Lee improved considerably in Delhi, and Stuart Clark has been the only one to have kept the runs in check. If Krejza does debut, Cameron White will be the most likely casualty, but then again with only five specialist batsmen in the side they would like the cushion White provides at No. 8.Australia (from) 1 Matthew Hayden, 2 Simon Katich, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Hussey, 5 Michael Clarke, 6 Shane Watson, 7 Brad Haddin (wk), 8 Cameron White, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Mitchell Johnson, 11 Stuart Clark, Jason Krejza.Pitch & conditionsThe 22 most important yards are a big unknown in this Test. This will the first first-class match for the new VCA Stadium in Nagpur. According to Ricky Ponting, the pitch is “rock hard like concrete and there’s no grass on it”.”With no history to the wicket, we don’t know if it’s going to bounce, or stay low, or what it’s going to do. One thing I know is that it is going to spin, it’s so bare. Hopefully we win the toss,” Ponting said.Stats & Trivia This will be the 80th Test that the Fab Four play together, and the last because Ganguly will retire after the match. He will have played 113 matches alongside Dravid, 102 with Tendulkar, and 86 with Laxman. Australian bowlers have managed 38 wickets in the three Tests so far, at an average of 53.61.On three occasions at home since 1990, India have squandered the series lead in final Test. In the same period Australia have trailed in a series seven times, going into the final Test. The last such instance came against England in the Ashes in 2005. Australia, however, have leveled the series in the final Test on just occasion since 1990, against West Indies in 1998-99 Out of the 84 wickets taken by bowlers in the series so far, 51 have been taken by the pace bowlers. Johnson, with 12 wickets, has been the leading wicket-taker, followed by Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan with 11 and 10 respectively.Quotes”This match is so important because we’ve played well in the series, played well from the very first game. That’s why this game is so important. We need to stick to the basics, and do what we have been doing from the first game. I don’t think there’s any added pressure or responsibility on the side.”
“This is probably as big a Test match as a lot of us have played. Being 1-0 down with a match to play is a position that a lot of us haven’t been in before. We pride ourselves on playing well in big games, and this is certainly a big game for us. There is a great opportunity for us to stand up, and play better cricket than we’ve played in the first three Test matches.”

Kyle Mills has been called into the New Zealand squad as cover for Jacob Oram after the allrounder suffered a slight calf strain on the eve of the first Test against West Indies. Oram was able to complete New Zealand’s training session on Wednesday and a team spokesman said he was 95% certain of starting the match in Dunedin on Thursday.Oram’s wobbly body has had to recover from a back injury and a fractured finger before the latest setback. He missed the Australia tour but proved his fitness for the West Indies series in a couple of first-class fixtures for Central Districts. “He had that layoff and then he had two big state games and then he’s just feeling a bit tender after that heavy workload,” the spokesman told NZPA.Mills, the fast bowler, will join the squad as a precaution but will be let go before the toss if Oram is cleared. Oram is due to enter at No. 6 and is seen as an answer to the side’s batting problems, which prevented them from competing with Australia over the past month.

A Macaca vai a 11.

Na próxima rodada, o Santos vai a Salvador encarar o Vitória, na quarta-feira. Na quinta-feira, a Ponte recebe o Cruzeiro.

Elyounoussi let Saints down vs West Ham

Southampton extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to four games following their 0-0 draw with West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday.

The Saints worked hard defensively to ensure that they came away with at least a point, as they kept the likes of Michail Antonio – who was sent off late in the game – and Jarrod Bowen at bay.

Whilst there were some strong performers on the day, with the likes of Jack Stephens, Alex McCarthy and Mohammed Salisu impressing at the back, there were also some disappointing showings. One player, in particular, who struggled against David Moyes’ side was Norweigan international Mo Elyounoussi.

Ralph Hasenhuttl ditched his favoured 4-2-2-2 formation to line up with a 4-1-4-1, opting to select Elyounoussi as one of his two central midfielders – alongside James Ward-Prowse – ahead of Oriol Romeu in the holding midfield position.

Unfortunately, the 27-year-old – who was on loan at Celtic last season – was unable to showcase his quality in a new position. He was given the lowest SofaScore rating (6.1) out of the 22 starters in the game, as he failed to adapt to playing centrally instead of in his more natural wide role in the side.

Defensively, he offered almost nothing. Per SofaScore, he made zero tackles, blocks or interceptions in 90 minutes on the pitch. He was also dribbled past twice and lost a whopping 85% of his duels, losing nine of his 10 battles on the ground and two of his three in the air.

This suggests that he was not up to the physical battle in the middle of the park as West Ham’s players dominated him in one-on-one duels. He needed to be stronger  in order to either retain possession for Southampton or win the ball back, rather than being a liability by allowing the Hammers to consistently come out on top in battles.

Offensively, he did not fare much better either. Per SofaScore, Elyounoussi had fewer touches (33) than goalkeeper Alex McCarthy (41) and he lost possession 11 times from those 33 touches. This means that he gave the ball away once every three touches, which shows that he was not secure enough with the ball at his feet to be effective in midfield for Hasenhuttl’s team – only creating one chance all game.

The Austrian head coach put his faith in Elyounoussi by deploying him in a brand-new role, but the dud let him down with his performance. He offered next-to-nothing defensively and was not up to the physical challenge of playing in the engine room against West Ham, which is why Hasenhuttl will surely be disappointed with his performance.

BCB XI clueless against Herath

After ruling out play on the first day fog and bad light allowed only 53.1 overs on the second, but that was more than sufficient for the Sri Lankan spinners to roll over a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI for 88 in Savar. The wrecker-in-chief surprisingly was not Muttiah Muralitharan but left-arm spinner, Rangana Herath, who was included in the touring party after Ajantha Mendis was ruled out with an ankle injury. After the new-ball bowlers had nipped out a couple of early wickets Herath, who has played only 13 Tests since making his debut in 1999, ran through the young BCB side. Opener Imrul Kayes and Raqibul Hasan had taken the hosts to 47 for 2 before Herath struck five times in his next four overs. Muralitharan took two in two balls to put them in more trouble and only No. 8 Saikat Ali (22) provided any resistance. The Sri Lankans’ batting wasn’t as impressive; Malinda Warnapura and Chamara Kapugedera were both dismissed for ducks before Michael Vandort and captain Mahela Jayawardene dragged the visitors to 36 off 19 overs. This is the Sri Lankans’ only practice match before the first Test gets underway in Mirpur on Boxing Day. Several of their practice sessions have also been hampered due to the fog.

Crystal Palace: Fans react to Tayo Adaramola images

Crystal Palace youngster Tayo Adaramola has been involved in first-team training ahead of the trip to Liverpool this weekend, The Palace Way report.

And, as to be expected, the images of the teenager has had plenty of Eagles fans talking on social media.

Adaramola, primarily a left-back who can also play in an advanced midfield role, signed professional terms at Selhurst Park last November.

The Irishman has made over 30 appearances for the club’s youth sides, and it seems as if he has caught the eye of Patrick Vieira.

The Palace boss has just one senior left-back option in his squad in Tyrick Mitchell, and it seems as if Adaramola is getting his chance to impress in training.

The Palace Way shared two images of the 17-year-old in training, one of which was alongside right-back Joel Ward.
