'We're confident about ourselves' – Goswami

India women are upbeat about their chances at the Women’s World Twenty20 despite their lack of experience in the format

The Indian women’s team finished an unsatisfying third in the 50-over World Cup in Australia after being finalists four years ago, and heads to England for the first women’s World Twenty20 with fewer expectations and less pressure than it did during the trip Down Under.India were expected to be one of the top contenders in Australia; however, the highlight of a disappointing tour was a third place play-off win over the hosts. Three months on, things are different: None of the women’s teams have played a lot of Twenty20; New Zealand have played the most – 12, England 11, Australia 10 and India 2, so there is little past form to go by.India have prepared for the tournament with selection matches and practice games against Under-17 boys in Bangalore. Sudha Shah, the coach, said the players worked on their fielding, playing combinations and on avoiding dot balls. “We have a very balanced side with experienced and young players,” Shah said a day before the team’s departure to England. “We have one of the best bowling attacks. Gouher [Sultana, left-arm spinner] has been bowling well in her first few series and Priyanka [Roy, legspinner] was our highest wicket-taker in the World Cup.”Jhulan Goswami, India’s captain, was also upbeat about her side’s chances and didn’t believe Australia and New Zealand, who have power-hitters in their line-up, had an edge over the others. “They are taller and fitter than us”, Goswami said. “[But] Power is not everything, you need to play with your mind. If you’re mentally strong you can beat them and we are confident about ourselves.”The success of their most senior batsmen – Anjum Chopra and Mithali Raj – in England is to India’s advantage. Chopra, who has scored a century and two half-centuries in 13 ODIs in England, is expected to contribute in a big way. “I think things should work to my advantage even though I wasn’t comfortable with Twenty20 initially,” Chopra said. “I really like it now and it’s like all our cricketing knowledge has been condensed into a smallish format. Since it’s shorter probably the wickets will come into play but at the end of the day you have to hit the ball. Twenty20 may be a new format but I would still think it’s best to play cricketing strokes. I know the aim is to hit the ball hard but not without timing.”Chopra pinpointed fielding and running between the wickets as areas where India needed to improve. “In this format we need to be always looking to take singles and also not to concede any.”Raj also said the changes she was forced make while batting in Twenty20 had made her uncomfortable at first but it was something she was getting used to. “I think for someone who is fluent in cricketing shots, this change can be difficult,” Raj said. “You realise that you need to find other ways of scoring which will get you more runs than what you usually rely on.”Over the next few weeks it will become clear whether a level playing field will work in India’s favour, and whether they can return to the glory days of 2005 when they qualified for the World Cup final, and subsequently enjoyed a series of other successes.

Newcastle in talks with Overmars

An update has emerged on Ajax chief Marc Overmars, regarding Newcastle’s interest in bringing him back to England.

What’s the talk?

According to The Mirror, the Saudi Arabian consortium PIF are in talks with the Dutchman over a deal to become the director of football at St. James’ Park as they look to make a major decision behind the scenes.

The report claims that the former Arsenal player is interested in the role as he would be given funds to work with in the transfer window. He is also said to be keen on bringing Erik ten Hag along with him from Amsterdam to be Steve Bruce’s replacement.

Ecstatic

Newcastle fans will surely be left feeling ecstatic with this news for various reasons.

For starters, it shows that PIF are keen to immediately bring in a footballing figure to run the club behind the scenes. Overmars enjoyed a terrific career as a player, playing well over 400 competitive games for Arsenal, Ajax and Barcelona combined, showing that he has a strong footballing background.

He has taken his expertise and applied it to his job at Ajax. The Dutch giants have sold £600m worth of talent during his time at the club, with the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt all coming through before being sold on for profit under Overmars’ watch. He has shown that he can oversee a successful recruitment system whilst still achieving results on the pitch, with Ajax reaching the quarter-finals and the semi-finals of the Champions League in that time.

The Magpies fans would also be delighted to see ten Hag arrive alongside Overmars. He has won five trophies in four years at the club, winning 2.34 points per game on average across 184 matches in charge of Ajax. This is along with his aforementioned achievements in the Champions League and the long list of talents, including de Jong and de Ligt, taken out of his squad throughout his time there.

The Dutch manager has shown that he can achieve success without spending huge amounts of money or retaining his best talent, which proves that he is an excellent coach who can get the best out of what he has at his disposal. That is why Newcastle fans would love to see him on Tyneside along with Overmars, as he could help them to avoid relegation before pushing on next season.

Hussey replaces Voges at Nottinghamshire

David Hussey will join Nottinghamshire as a short-term replacement for Adam Voges

David Hussey did not make Australia’s Ashes squad but he has ensured he will be in the right country should the Test team need a last-minute replacement early in the series. Hussey flies out on the weekend for a five-week stint with Nottinghamshire as a short-term replacement for Adam Voges.Voges has been named as the vice-captain in Australia A’s upcoming series against Pakistan A in Queensland. That opened the door for Hussey to return to Nottinghamshire, the team he represented from 2004 to 2007.”I played at Notts for four years and I’ve got a lot of close friends over there, so I’m really looking forward to it,” Hussey told the Cricket Victoria website. “It’s going to be pretty hectic, I think there are three championship games and three one-dayers, but that’s good.”It also puts Hussey in a useful position should the Ashes squad suffer any late injury worries for the first couple of Tests, as batting cover is thin in the 16-man touring group. The Ashes squad gathered in London this week, a few days after Hussey returned to Melbourne following Australia’s exit from the ICC World Twenty20.”I love playing cricket, so while I like having a couple of weeks off every now and again, it doesn’t worry me playing year-round, it helps me keep my rhythm and timing,” Hussey said. “So hopefully I can put in some good performances for Notts and help them out while Adam is away with Australia A.”

O meia Jadson endossou o discurso do treinador.

Luke Edwards drops update in manager search

Newcastle United’s talks to appoint Eddie Howe as the new manager at St James’ Park are not over yet.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a claim made by Luke Edwards, with the journalist revealing on Twitter that, despite recent reports suggesting that the Magpies’ discussions to appoint the 43-year-old are at risk of collapsing, talks between the two parties are still ongoing.

Regarding the club’s discussions with Howe, the journalist said: “I’m told they are still working on things and still talking.”

Fans will be buzzing

Considering how quickly the January transfer window is approaching, in addition to just how poor Newcastle have been in the league so far this season, the news that the club’s talks with Howe aren’t dead in the water just yet is sure to leave the St James’ Park faithful buzzing.

Indeed, if the Magpies are to give themselves the best possible chance of beating the drop by the end of the season, it would seem vital for the club’s new owners to have appointed Steve Bruce’s successor well before the January transfer window opens. In that case, the new manager should have ample time to assess the current Newcastle squad, determine the positions in which it is in most need of reinforcements, and identify potential targets to bring into the squad during the winter market.

However, should the club’s talks with Howe collapse, Newcastle will find themselves back to square one in their search for a new manager. The longer the wait goes on, the more it could substantially worsen their chances of retaining their status as a Premier League club next season.

As such, Edwards’ claim that negotiations are still ongoing with Howe is undoubtedly positive news for the Magpies, who will certainly be hoping that a resolution can be found in talks with the former Bournemouth manager as quickly as possible.

Villa fans react to Shakespeare’s departure

Aston Villa assistant manager Craig Shakespeare has also left the club following Dean Smith’s sacking on Sunday; and as to be expected, a number of Villa fans have been reacting to the news on social media.

Villa officially parted ways with Smith on Sunday days after a fifth consecutive defeat in the Premier League. There was no mention of Shakespeare in the club’s statement on Smith, but The Telegraph claim that the 58-year-old, who moved to Villa Park in August 2020, has also departed.

Coach Aaron Danks and set-piece specialist Austin MacPhee are still at the club, with Villa’s search for a new manager underway.

The likes of Steven Gerrard and Ralph Hasenhuttl are thought to be under consideration by the Villa hierarchy, whereas initial contact was made with Paulo Fonseca last week, with an appointment aiming to be finalised before the international break is over.

Shakespeare is no stranger to abrupt departures from Premier League clubs, having also been dismissed by Everton and Watford under the reigns of Sam Allardyce and Nigel Pearson respectively. His time in charge of Leicester in 2017 was brief and unsuccessful, lasting for just eight months as he left them in the top-flight relegation zone.

Villa fans react

The Telegraph’s Matt Law shared the news regarding Shakespeare on Sunday, which led to these Villa supporters giving their thoughts to the news on social media. Many were quite pleased to see him go, believing that he didn’t cover himself in glory during his time working under Smith.

Lee hopeful of Edgbaston comeback

Brett Lee, Australia’s senior fast bowler with 310 Test wickets, has declared himself on track to play the third Test at Edgbaston

Brett Lee wants “to get out there and play”•AFP

Australia were reduced to just two bowling options for much of Friday morning at Lord’s, but reinforcements are on the way. Brett Lee, Australia’s senior fast bowler with 310 Test wickets, has declared himself on track to play the third Test at Edgbaston, while Shane Watson has returned to bowling at full intensity and is available for selection as anallrounder after Lord’s.News of Lee and Watson’s progress might not solve Ricky Ponting’s problems in the short-term – Nathan Hauritz’s dislocated finger and Peter Siddle’s illness left him with just two frontline bowlers on the second morning of the match – but will certainly expand Australia’s options for the last three Tests of the series. Lee completed a series of sprints under the supervision of team physiotherapist Alex Kountouris on Friday morning, while Andrew Hilditch observed Watson bowling from his full run-up in the Lord’s nets.Watson’s recovery from a thigh strain is at a more advanced stage than Lee’s recuperation from a rib injury, but both could figure in Australia’s plans for the Edgbatson Test, beginning July 30.”I’m very optimistic that I can get up for the [Edgbaston] Test, selection pending,” Lee told Cricinfo after Friday’s training session. “I’ll be giving myself every opportunity. If I don’t feel like I’m ready to go I won’t push it. We’ve obviously got a massive serieshere. You don’t want to turn a three week injury into a six month thing if you tear it right through.”I haven’t had a bowl as yet. It’s ticking off every box. You start off with a light walk, progress to some light jogging, then heavy jogging then sprints. There are a couple of little stages I have to get through first. I’ll be doing a bit of medicine ball stuff before I can bowl. Provided I’m pain free the bowling will start. Whether that’s in a day’s time, two day’s time or four day’s time will be determined by how quickly I progress withthings.”Lee struggled to watch Australia’s bowlers on the receiving end from Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook on Thursday morning, but drew encouragement from their late innings riposte. Mitchell Johnson, in particular, could find himself under pressure if Lee returns for Edgbaston, given the left-armer’s errant lines and profligate economy-rates thus far this series.”It was difficult to watch, to say the least,” Lee said. “I don’t enjoy watching cricket, period. I think I’ll enjoy it more when I’m finished. I just feel like I want to get out there and play. It’s frustrating – if I’m on the sideline and injured, you just really want to try and get out there for your team. It was hard yesterday. I thought the guys early on, it wasn’t our best start. However, the way the guys fought back, it showed a lot of character in ourbowlers. To have them 1-200 and at stumps 6-360, with another wicket in ourfavour the day could have gone to us.”
