The 28-year-old picked up a serious thigh problem during a training session with France ahead of their World Cup qualification match against Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Laurie Whitwell, The Athletic’s United reporter, provided an update on Pogba’s situation, revealing he could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

He tweeted: “Paul Pogba at risk of being out until next year after French medics diagnose thigh injury as 8-10 weeks on sidelines. #MUFC still to assess Pogba, who is on his way back to England.”

With the influential engine room operator potentially being consigned to the treatment table until the new year, Solskjaer must find a solution to his enforced absence.

Luckily for the Norwegian tactician, though, he has an array of talents at his disposal, and he may well have the perfect replacement already within his ranks.

Donny van de Beek has been desperate for a run of games to showcase his true potential since arriving from Ajax for £40m in the summer of 2020, but he’s only started four Premier League games since.

“As a professional player you always prepare for your season before you come back for training, you always do something before, and I think everyone was doing their jobs at home,” the Portugal star told the official Manchester United website.

“Yes, he’s (Van de Beek) working hard and working hard in the gym. Obviously, he is one of the quality players we know, and now he’s building up,” he added.

Van de Beek has also been dubbed “perfect” by former United midfielder Owen Hargreaves.

Nevertheless, the £22.5m-rated gem has found opportunities hard to come by at the Theatre of Dreams once again in the current campaign, featuring from the off on just two occasions in all competitions under Solskjaer.

But now, with Pogba believed to be unavailable for at least two months, United’s boss may place his faith in Van de Beek over the more defensively-minded Fred.

Jonatan Gomez desembarcou no São Paulo como meia, mas será volante a partir de agora. Dorival Júnior resolveu tornar o argentino um concorrente de Petros e Jucilei, ajudando na saída de bola e saindo de trás para auxiliar o ataque, inclusive com finalizações de fora da área.

Nesse sábado, em jogo-treino contra oBlack Gold Oil FC, dos Estados Unidos, Gomez chegou a atuar na cabeça de área, como principal marcador da equipe, e fez três gols na vitória por 6 a 1. Mas, a princípio, não atuará tão recuado assim.

– O Jonatan trabalhou como primeiro volante em razão de não termos mais um atleta na função. Mas o que quero mesmo dele é como segundo volante, e ele tem qualidade e capacidade, boa distribuição de bola e chegando muito bem por trás para finalizar.

O recuo do camisa 33 é uma decisão que Dorival toma para aproveitar melhor o jogador, vindo do colombiano Independiente Santa Fe por US$ 800 mil (R$ 2,68 milhões na época) em junho, e, também, por necessidade. Com Petros e Jucilei no meio-campo titular e Militão sendo testado como lateral-direito, faltam opções como volante na reserva.

Na visão de Dorival, Gomez, agora, é a primeira alternativa a Jucilei. No 4-1-4-1 que o técnico tem usado ultimamente, Petros fica na cabeça de área, e Jucilei busca a bola, levando-a à frente para construir o jogo ou finalizar. E os chutes de fora da área são o principal trunfo de Jonatan Gomez, como ele mostrou no jogo-treino de sábado. Na necessidade, é possível, mas improvável, que o argentino jogue também na função de Petros.

Contratado com aval do amigo Lucas Pratto, o meio-campista de 27 anos foi titular em seus cinco primeiros jogos pelo São Paulo, sendo quatro com Dorival, e perdeu espaço com a chegada de Hernanes. O técnico, porém, viu no argentino um esforço para ajudar na marcação e sentiu que, deixando-o próximo demais da área, ele não encontraria tanto espaço para finalizar como se chegasse com a bola vindo de trás. Por isso, mudou sua posição.

Jonatan Gomez ainda não deve sonhar com uma vaga imediatamente como titular. Mas sua mudança de posição aumenta seu espaço no elenco. Se o meio-campo estiver travado contra a Ponte Preta, no sábado, no Morumbi, o argentino é uma das primeiras opções para mudar o panorama da partida na visão de Dorival.

The Australian captain’s comments were tantamount to an accusation of time-wasting by an England side attempting to save the first Test, and will do little to defuse tensions between the two sides following a fractious day’s play at Sophia Gardens.Hostilities between the camps commenced before a ball was bowled on Sunday, with Mitchell Johnson and Kevin Pietersen involved in a verbal altercation after the latter hit balls in the direction of the Australian fast bowler. They continued after the commencement of play, with Andrew Flintoff temporarily standing his ground to a Ponting catch at second slip, and again when Stuart Broad and Peter Siddle bumped shoulders in the final session. A pitch invasion staged by a pair of protesters further added to the intensity of the occasion.But the controversy most likely to linger was the involvement of Bilal Shafayat and Steve McCaig, the England 12th man and physiotherapist, who made appearances in the 102nd and 103rd overs of the innings despite scant evidence that the batsmen, Jimmy Anderson and Monty Panesar, called upon their services. Then there was drink spilled on Jimmy’s gloves, and he called up to the dressing room and we weren’t sure if he needed 12th man or physio. If Ricky is upset, that’s a shame.”Our intentions were good. We weren’t trying to deliberately waste a huge amount of time. Those weren’t our tactics. ولدى سؤاله على وجه التحديد عما إذا كان يريد التعاقد مع شخص ما، أجاب كلوب: “لقد تغير ذلك بالطبع، أعلم أننا أجرينا هذه المناقشة منذ أن بدأ كل شيء وأنا من قال إننا لسنا بحاجة إلى لاعب وسط، أنت كنت على حق وكنت أنا المخطئ، هذا هو الوضع”.

وواصل: “لكن النقطة المحددة لا تتغير، سنفعل شيئًا ولكن يجب أن يكون صحيحًا، عاد كورتيس، عودة تياجو ليست بعيدة جدًا، عودة جوتا ليست بعيدة جدًا كذلك، جويل ماتيب سيعود وكل هذا سيخفف من الموقف قليلًا”.

واختتم: “سيكون أمرًا رائعًا إذا لم يتم إدراج أي شخص في قائمة الإصابات على المدى القادم، لن نغير طريقة تعاملنا مع الوضع، لذا ليس هناك ما أقوله لك في هذه اللحظة، سوف نرى”.

Cricinfo staff26-Aug-2009Newly-appointed Bengal coach Roger Binny has said he would seek the advice of former India captain Sourav Ganguly for ensuring success in the upcoming Ranji Trophy.The 54-year-old former India medium-pacer, who replaced Utpal Chatterjee from the last season, had a drill session with the Bengal probables at Eden Gardens.Binny said he already had a word with former coach Bharat Arun, under whose reign Bengal were relegated to the Plate League in the 2007-08 season. “I have already spoken to Bharat Arun and Mohinder Amarnath [last season’s consultant] before coming here,” Binny told PTI. “Next week, I plan to speak to [Sourav] Ganguly and seek his advice.”Binny said he has also picked up a few pointers after viewing the quarter-final match [against Tamil Nadu] that Bengal lost last season, after gaining promotion to the Super League. “I feel our batsmen played one-day like shots…They seemed to be in a hurry and played too many shots. I think that’s one thing we can improve upon.”He also welcomed the rebel Indian Cricket League (ICL) players who are back in the domestic fold after availing the BCCI’s amensty offer. “It’s a positive move and we will have the experienced playes back in the side. But they will have to fight their way back.”

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by 90min, who claim that Jeff Shi could finally be willing to part ways with the 25-year-old this winter, amid interest from both Liverpool and Barcelona.

The report goes on to state that, despite Wolves having opened contract talks with the winger back in 2019, the two parties are still no closer to agreeing terms regarding a new deal, something which caused issues under the previous management of Nuno Espirito Santo, and is once again beginning to under the leadership of Bruno Lage.

Finally, it is claimed that, although Liverpool are keen to do a deal for the Spain international this winter, Jurgen Klopp’s side value Traore at less than £30m – a figure which Shi does not want to drop below.

He’s becoming a liability

While it is undeniable that Traore is an exceptionally gifted player, not to mention an integral part of the way Wolves play their football under Bruno Lage, the fact that the 25-year-old’s contract talks are once again causing problems at Molineux appear to lead to one conclusion – the winger is becoming a liability.

As previously mentioned, the Spaniard’s ability is not in question, having averaged a SofaScore match rating of 7.27 over 37 Premier League appearances in 2019/20, a rating of 7.03 over 37 league fixtures in 2020/21 and a score of 7.17 over his ten top-flight games so far this season – ranking him as Wolves’ best, third-best and best performer in each respective campaign.

However, with 90min claiming that as a result of the stalemate in his contract negotiations, Lage is now less inclined to start Traore in the league, the question must be asked as to whether it is worthwhile keeping hold of a player who is valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, as well one who is currently picking up a sizeable £43k-per-week, if he is only going to warm the bench for Wolves.

As such, while it would usually be a rather strange suggestion considering his overall level of performance for the club, Shi must axe Traore this January, as it would very much appear as if the breakdown in relationship between the player who Graeme Souness dubbed a “near miss” and the club is now beyond the point of no return.
