West Ham: Yarmolenko tipped to join Genoa

As per Pianeta Genoa, as shared by Sport Witness, West Ham winger Andriy Yarmolenko has been linked with a move to Italian side Genoa, following the appointment of manager Andriy Shevchenko.

THE LOWDOWN: YARMOLENKO STRUGGLING FOR PLAYING TIME

The Ukrainian attacker has made just eight appearances in the Premier League this season, with all of his minutes having come as a substitute.

Yarmolenko, an experienced Ukraine international with 106 caps, has struggled for playing time under manager David Moyes due to a combination of Manuel Lanzini, Jarrod Bowen, Saïd Benrahma and Pablo Fornals all being preferred options on the wing.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This has severely limited the number of opportunities the 32-year-old has had this campaign, pushing him out of the Hammers’ plans as more and more exit links pop up.

THE LATEST: YARMOLENKO EXIT CLAIM

As per Pianeta Genoa (via Sport Witness), Serie A club Genoa have opened talks regarding the possible transfer of Yarmolenko. The winger’s contract is due to expire in the summer, so this may mean West Ham are forced into selling him in the January transfer window for a small fee.

Pianeta Genoa claim that the talks are progressing well, although it is unclear whether Genoa are in talks with the player’s agents or with West Ham directly.

THE VERDICT: TIME TO LEAVE?

Following the arrival of Shevchenko at Genoa, it is evident from these talks that the manager was impressed with Yarmolenko whilst he was in charge of the Ukrainian national side.

This would indicate a good level of playing time for the West Ham player, who, at 32-years-old, would surely relish the chance of regular first-team minutes as he nears the end of his career.

When on top form, Yarmolenko can put in dazzling performances in the attacking third – just look at the quality he produced at Euro 2020. Fan favourite Declan Rice even labelled the Ukrainian international as ‘special’ (per Hammers. News), and raved about his technical ability.

Yarmolenko could prove to be an asset for Genoa if the Hammers choose to let him go in January, and this feels like a win win for all parties if the Irons can indeed bank a fee and let an unwanted fringe player move on.

Rameez's 13 keep Rawalpindi on top

A round-up of the third day’s action from the fifth round of matches from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Cricinfo staff05-Nov-2009Group APakistan Customs stitched up a comfortable win, their first of the season, over Lahore Shalimar at Muridke. They began the third day with a lead of 181 and could only add a single run to that this morning, but by keeping Lahore Shalimar to 244 they allowed themselves an easy chase. Mohammad Iftikhar, the right-arm medium-pacer, struck twice early and then down the order to apply the pressure and the only batsman to reply was Sohail Idrees. Idrees batted 158 deliveries for an unbeaten 104, which contributed 59% of the total. However, it could ultimately only help set a target of 63, which was knocked off in 7.3 overs despite the loss of the openers.Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) dominated the first half of the day, thanks to Kashif Daud’s six wickets, but a batting collapse handed the momentum right back to Habib Bank Limited(HBL) at the Marghzar Cricket Ground. From an overnight lead of 122, ZTBL added a further 117 to their score as Daud ran down the order for a career-best 6 for 72. The captain Hasan Raza’s 33 and an unbeaten 36 from Mohammad Aslam at No. 9 could yet prove to be crucial given the situation at stumps. Set a target of 240, ZTBL slipped to 91 for 5 with Sarmad Anwar taking three wickets. In Rawalpindi, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) finished a fine day’s work needing another 70 runs to win with eight wickets in hand. That this was the result was down to their work in the field, when they dismissed Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) for 180 after their own innings came down for 293. No major partnerships were allowed to flourish as four of the five bowlers used restricted KRL. There was just one half-century, from Ali Khan, and despite losing two before stumps, including the opener Naeemuddin for a first-ball duck, SNGPL are in prime position to achieve their fourth win in a row.Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) didn’t buckle under a weight of runs – not yet, at least – and held out for another day against National Bank of Pakistan in Faisalabad. From an overnight 274 for 2, NBP declared at 441 for 5 with Rashid Riaz (63*), Mansoor Amjad (45) and Qaiser Abbas (38) piling on the misery for SSGC. Trailing by 259, SSGC replied with a steady second innings to ensure NBP will have to work a little harder on the final day. There were no substantial contributions but SSGC reached 143 for 6, leaving NBP four wickets to take for their third win of the season. An interesting tussle between Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) and Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) at the Gaddafi Stadium ended with the latter chasing 262 with ten wickets. PIA began the third day with a lead of 55 and extended it to 279 thanks to key roles at the top and down the order. Rafatullah Mohmand (48) and Adil Nisar (61) added 106 for the opening wicket but suffered a wobble after they and Jahangir Mirza (52) fell. However, the last five wickets rallied to add 129 and that set PIA a tough target. In the 2.3 overs left in the day they knocked off 17 of those.Group BYoung fast bowler Mohammad Rameez capped an outstanding match by adding a career-best 8 for 27 to five in the first innings, helping table-toppers Rawalpindi beat Peshawar by 75 runs at the National Ground. Rameez was unstoppable with the new ball and utterly flummoxed Peshawar for a paltry 77. It was a stunning turnaround from Rawalpindi who, after being forced to follow on after making just 81, were carried to 334 thanks to Usman Saeed (79) and Zahid Mansoor (81). The pair rallied the top order confidently and a couple key hands down the order helped set Peshawar a target of 153. They didn’t even get near, with Rameez slicing them apart amazingly. Rawalpindi have won four from four.A tidy outing in the field set up a nine-wicket win for Sialkot over Quetta at the Jinnah Stadium. Kamran Younis carried from an overnight 147 to 182 and the wicketkeeper Ahmed Butt made 94 to help the score to 354 even as Arun Lal took four more to finish with 7 for 87 against a lack of support. Then Quetta folded for 156 in 39 overs to Sialkot’s seam attack, and a target of 16 was easily achieved.Faisalabad, despite making 309, were forced to follow on by Islamabad at the Diamond Club Ground. The pressure of trying to get near Islamabad’s first innings of 485 told as no big stands were formed; the 84 for the second wicket was the best Faisalabad managed. Imran Ali battled with 73 from the top but received little support and Faisalabad needed 52 from Mohammad Salman and an unbeaten 39 from Zulqarnain at No.10 prop up the scorecard. Shehzad Azam (4 for 121) and Nasrullah Khan (3 for 96) shared seven wickets. Following-on, Faisalabad were 0 for no loss at the close.Chasing 316, Multan finished day three on 99 for 3 against Karachi Blues at the National Stadium. Multan only added nine to their first-innings total in the morning, after which Rizwan Haider and Zulfiqar Babar ran through Karachi Blues to dismiss them for 167. The duo struck all down the order and didn’t allow the opposition to dominate; there were no half-centuries while Shahzaib Hasan (42), Asad Shafiq (32) and Tanvir Ahmed (33) were cut off after they got starts. Shahzaid finished with 5 for 74 and Babar 4 for 43. Multan lost a couple wickets early on but were steadied by the No. 3 Rameez Alam’s unbeaten 58.Lahore Ravi replied well to Hyderabad’s 377, thanks to the opener and captain Kashif Siddiq’s 121 at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Siddiq, who resumed on 70, saw his side slipped from 114 for 2 to 149 for 6 but found assistance from the lower order. Waqas Ahmed (33), Mohammad Irshad (65)and Adbul Ghaffar (27*) were superb in getting the score up to 348. In their second innings Hyderabad finished the day on 61 for 3, a lead of 90.

Younis dismisses notion of Champions Trophy revenge

Pakistan’s captain Younis Khan says that his team were more interested in focussing on their game

Cricinfo staff02-Nov-2009

Younis Khan is not looking to avenge his side’s Champions Trophy semi-final defeat to New Zealand•AFP

Pakistan’s captain Younis Khan sought to put aside talk of revenge from their loss in the ICC Champions Trophy semi-final to New Zealand, saying his team were focussing on their game.”It’s not a revenge series but all the players have it in their minds to beat New Zealand,” he said. “In sport, there is no revenge but we will not forget that [Champions Trophy] loss. It’s not going to be easy beating New Zealand. They are a closely-knit team, they play as a unit and they did very well in the Champions Trophy.”Moreover, since it’s a neutral venue the conditions will be similar for both sides, so there will be no advantage or disadvantage for any team. It’s important we play as a team.”Younis said his team needed to sharpen their fielding, an area of play that let them down in the Champions Trophy – especially a dropped catch by Younis off Grant Elliot in the semi-final. “This is one area where we need improvement as New Zealand have a clear edge on us in this department. We suffer a lot because of fielding but the boys have shown an inclination to improve and I am sure this series will see them field well.”One of Pakistan’s most potent weapons could be Mohammad Aamer, the teenage left-arm fast bowler, around whom there has been much hype of late. Younis, though, said he was staying calm. “Sometimes if you have a young guy and he achieves everything so soon then he can get out of his focus,” he said. “But he is more focused and I think what he needs is some more muscle as he’s a thin guy and he’s working with (fitness trainer) David Dwyer to achieve that.”He spoke on Pakistan’s other young talent. “Everyone knows about Mohammad Aamer and (batsman) Umar Akmal but we have a couple of other good youngsters in our team. “In batting we have Khalid Latif who scored a double hundred and a hundred in recent matches – he’s a guy you’ll be seeing soon, and we also have Wahab Riaz, another left-arm fast bowler.”These four are our future and hopefully they’ll become regulars in our team.”It has been a whirlwind month for Younis, who resigned from the captaincy against suspicions of match-fixing raised in the aftermath of that semi-final loss to New Zealand and murmurs about factions in the team and management. He initially said he was keen to stop what, according to him, was a flawed search for answers every time the side failed to win, but subsequently he resumed the captaincy.Shahid Afridi, the vice-captain, recently quashed rumours about an ongoing rift with Younis, and the captain again found himself doing the same. “This team is not anyone’s personal property and we are all playing for one country,” Younis said. “Our aim is common, and that is to ensure victory for Pakistan.”After the limited-overs series in the UAE Pakistan move to New Zealand for three Tests, after which they head across the Tasman to Australia for three Tests, five ODIs and a Twenty20.

Rangers: GVB must axe Arfield vs Lyon

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst will be hoping to retain his 100% record in charge of the Ibrox giants as they prepare for a Europa League clash on Thursday.

The Gers travel to France to take on Ligue 1 giants Lyon in their final group stage match, with both sides having already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.

This clash comes off the back of a 3-0 win over Dundee FC in the Scottish Premiership last weekend, with Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos scoring either side of an own-goal.

Too weak

Despite the impressive result against Dundee, one player was able to potentially play his way out of the starting XI with his display – Scott Arfield.

Van Bronckhorst must ruthlessly axe the former Burnley man from the side after a disappointing performance against the Premiership outfit.

As per SofaScore, he only won one duel – competing in two – in 90 minutes on the pitch and failed to make a single clearance, block, interception or tackle. Along with this, he failed to create a single chance for his teammates and only completed 79% of his attempted passes, showing that he was a passenger in the game as he was unable to make an impact at either end of the pitch.

This was not a one-off from the experienced midfielder. In the Premiership this season, he has won 0.9 duels per game and lost 67% of his battles overall. This is whilst creating just 0.4 chances per game and missing three big chances – along with scoring twice.

It’s a surprising turn of events for a player who was once dubbed a “manager’s dream” by current Dunfermline boss, John Hughes.

Evidently, his form has dropped off and he is now far too weak on the pitch and has let the side down at times this season with his displays in the middle of the park. Van Bronckhorst cannot afford to have a liability on the pitch against top opposition and Arfield’s recent showing against Dundee and his performances in the campaign so far suggest that that is exactly what he would be.

Therefore, the £1.8m-rated dud must be taken out of the XI in order for another player to be given the chance to show what they can do.

Unless the Canada international starts to prove that he can hold his own on the physical side of the game or do enough on the ball to offset his lack of strength, he should be used sparingly by the Gers.

É a exigência do Flamengo, é paixão.

Parthiv Patel helps Gujarat to first-innings points

A round-up of the third day’s play of the third-round matches of the Ranji Trophy Super League 2009-10

Cricinfo staff19-Nov-2009

Parthiv Patel struck eight fours and a six during his 142-ball 105•Sivaraman Kitta/K Sivaraman

Group A

Scorecard
Wicketkeeper-captain Parthiv Patel led from the front with a scintillating century as Gujarat pocketed first-innings points against Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Right-arm fast bowler Siddharth Trivedi finished with a five-for as the home team could add 27 to their overnight score of 209 for 7. After Alfred Absolem had sent back the Gujarat openers during the reply, Parthiv and Niraj Patel took control with a 135-run stand for the third wicket. Parthiv struck eight fours and a six during his 142-ball stay, but fell shortly after Gujarat had taken the lead. Bhavik Thaker and Digant Popat were the two not out batsmen as Gujarat ended with a slender lead with six wickets in hand.
Scorecard
Tamil Nadu were on course for a win against Punjab after a brilliant all-round performance in Amritsar. Captain Dinesh Karthik led from front with a brilliant hundred, which helped the visitors post a huge 293-run first innings lead as they declared on 521 for 9, after resuming at 340 for 6. Karthik batted beautifully with support from the lower order – his century comprising 13 boundaries. He found able allies in Chandrasekar Ganapathy (44) and Ravinchandran Aswhin (22) and took the hosts beyond 500. They then had Punjab struggling at 114 for 5 as Aushik Srinivas and Ravinchandran Ashwin dented the top order. Pankaj Dharmani and Gaurav Gambhir were at the crease, and the will aim to avoid an innings defeat first up.
Scorecard
A much-improved batting performance in the second essay kept Mumbai’s hopes alive against Himachal Pradesh at the Bandra-Kurla Complex. Ajit Agarkar was their star with a confident unbeaten century, as Ajinkya Rahane and Wasim Jaffer weighed in with solid half-centuries. Agarkar, who scored seven fours and a six during his 194-ball innings had good support from Iqbal Abdullah, who scored a well-paced half-century, coming in at No. 9. The two put on an unbeaten stand of 91, to set Himachal a target of 252. HP negotiated the one over in the day, to take stumps at 4 for no loss. A tantalising day is on the cards tomorrow.
Scorecard
Overnight rain ruled out play in Bhubaneswar as the umpires called off the day’s play after five pitch inspections.Group B

Scorecard
If Piyush Chawla was Uttar Pradesh’s star the previous day with the ball, his well-compiled fifty ensured they took first-innings points against Baroda in a nervy first-innings reply. Irfan Pathan worked with Munaf Patel in tandem to wreck UP’s top order, condemning them to 89 for 5 from their overnight score of 36 for no loss. But Chawla’s vigilant effort, and a 44-run partnership for the ninth wicket with Praveen Gupta, proved crucial as they nosed ahead. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar was on song during Baroda’s second innings, picking up all three wickets that fell, as Baroda’s lead increased to 54.
Scorecard
KB Pawan and Amit Verma hit classy hundreds, and wicketkeeper Muralidharen Gautam followed up the act as Karnataka took an emphatic lead against Bengal in Mysore. Resuming on 186 for 2, Karnataka steadily closed in on Bengal’s first-innings score of 326 with the overnight batsmen, Pawan and Verma piling up 249. While Pawan finished with 14 fours and a six, Verma smashed 17 boundaries. Both batsmen were sent back by Ranadeb Bose, as Bengal looked for a way back through Saurasish Lahiri’s five-for. But Gautam, playing his fifth first-class match, rose to the occasion, hitting 14 fours en route to his hundred, as the hosts finished on 523 for 9.
ScorecardIt was slow going for bottom-placed Maharashtra as they looked to avoid a first-innings deficit against Saurashtra in Rajkot. But the persistency of the home team bowlers paid off, as they picked up seven Maharashtra wickets in the day after they had resumed on 53 for 1. Rohan Bhosale held firm at the top of the order with a fluent fifty but it was the left-arm spin duo of Ravindra Jadeja and Rakesh Dhruv who picked up two wickets apiece to tighten the noose on Maharashtra with over 250 still to get.

Wolves fans blast Marcal vs Brighton

Lots of Wolves fans were left blasting the performance of Fernando Marcal in their 1-0 win away at Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

Romain Saiss grabbed the only goal of the game for the visitors after a neat finish set up by a delightful pass rom Ruben Neves, but some members of the Molineux faithful were not too impressed with Marcal’s contribution to the win.

WWFC supporters were particularly critical of him going down far too easily on a number of occasions, emphasised as he lost out on five of his individual duels, while he also failed to block any shots or provide any accurate crosses from left wing-back (SofaScore).

Marcal also gave possession away 16 times, the joint-second most out of his teammates (SofaScore), in what was a disappointing night for him individually.
