Man City fans erupt over Jesus update

Flocking to Twitter, many Manchester City fans have been left buzzing as some news emerges on Gabriel Jesus and his future at Eastlands.

The Brazilian has become a regular under Pep Guardiola this season, shining in a new role on the right hand side of City’s forward line.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-updates-2/” title=”Man City latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jesus, grabbing more assists than any Sky Blues player in the Premier League over 2021/2022 so far, has been rejuvenated and arguably one of City’s most improved players.

Averaging the joint-third most shots per 90 out of City’s squad in that time (WhoScored), the 24-year-old is a consistent threat, leaving little wonder some news has emerged on what sporting director Txiki Begiristain could now offer the player.

According to 90min, the club are now preparing to offer Jesus a new deal and are ready to open talks with his entourage over fresh terms.

His current contract has 18 months left to run and it is believed that City are now lining up a move to tie him down for the foreseeable future.

City fans buzz…

Given how much the South American ace has thrived under Guardiola in a new role out wide, it’s little wonder City supporters are buzzing at this news.

City value Jesus at up to €65 million (£55m) and that should only increase with these consistent performances – especially considering he’s still fairly young.

Amassing over half a century of international caps for Brazil already, the striker’s quality is obvious, with many fans very keen to see him extend his stay at Eastlands.

Leeds backed to sign Okay Yokuslu

Leeds United should make a move for Celta Vigo midfielder Okay Yokuslu in the January transfer window, according to former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips.

The Lowdown: Orta makes Yokuslu claim

Marcelo Bielsa is suffering an injury crisis within his squad and Kalvin Phillips’ lengthy absence highlights the need for a new midfielder to come in next month.

Victor Orta spoke glowingly about Yokuslu during the summer, suggesting that a move for the former West Brom man could potentially be on the cards at some point.

The 39-cap Turkey international has struggled hugely for playing time at Celta Vigo this season, failing to make a single start in La Liga.

The Latest: Phillips endorses move

Despite Yokuslu being rarely utilised in Spain, Phillips told Football Insider that he believes the 27-year-old would be a better signing for Leeds than Reading midfielder John Swift, who has also been linked with move to Elland Road. The former Sunderland striker outlined:

“An experienced foreign player could be an option for Leeds, someone who has been around a bit.

“Yokuslu would be a great option I think. He has experience in Europe as well as in the Premier League. I don’t think it would faze [sic] him, going to Leeds.

“He was brilliant for that short spell in the Premier League with West Brom. Personally, I think that would be a better option than Swift. It would make a lot more sense to me.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-29/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Strong midfield signing

Yokuslu showed during his loan spell at West Brom last season that he can excel in the Premier League, impressing for a struggling team and winning an average of 2.6 aerial duels per game. His performances earned praise from Albion podcaster and journalist Adrian Goldberg, who gushed: “I think he’s such a forceful player, an excellent player.”

For that reason, the 27-year-old could be someone who could help fill the Phillips-shaped void in Leeds’ midfield, having also averaged 2.4 tackles per match for the Baggies – only Stuart Dallas (2.6) and Adam Forshaw (2.5) have a better return for the Whites this season.

A loan move could even make sense as a short-term fix, with an impressive spell possibly then leading to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

'We shot ourselves in the foot' – Cachopa

New Zealand captain Craig Cachopa has said his team paid the price for being too preoccupied with the Duckworth-Lewis target

Following their Under-19 World Cup exit in the quarter-finals to their Trans-Tasman rivals Australia in front of home fans, New Zealand captain Craig Cachopa has said his team paid the price for being too preoccupied with the weather and the Duckworth-Lewis target. Chasing 233 under grey skies in Rangiora, New Zealand could only manage 170.Sensing that rain could have the final say, Australian captain Mitchell Marsh introduced his spinners as early as the tenth over to run through the overs quickly in order to bowl the minimum 20 to constitute a match. New Zealand lost three wickets in that period and never really recovered to challenge the Australians.”We thought there was a big storm coming and we tried to keep up with the Duckworth, but lost a few wickets, and that made it quite hard,” Cachopa told the . “I looked at the rain radar just as I was going out to bat, and there wasn’t anything on it, so we might have shot ourselves in the foot.”However, Cachopa didn’t hide behind that excuse for the defeat, and admitted that his team played poor cricket. He expected the experienced members of the team to step up. New Zealand had three players in their line-up who took part in the previous World Cup in Malaysia – Harry Boam, Doug Bracewell and Corey Anderson. Boam was bowled for 6, Anderson fell tamely for 21 after getting off to a brisk start and Bracewell fell for 33 when his team was already in trouble.”I thought the guys that have been in the side for a while should’ve stood up today, and they didn’t quite do that, so that’s disappointing,” Cachopa said.Cachopa walked in in the 17th over when New Zealand had lost three wickets. He and Bracewell had added 40 for the seventh wicket before he was dismissed by the left-arm spinner Luke Doran for 34. He was the seventh wicket down at 130, just when New Zealand were desperate for a big partnership.”Me and Dougie [Bracewell] put together a good partnership and when we were there I thought we had a massive shot,” Cachopa said. “Unfortunately, I got out, but I thought we still had a really good opportunity when Dougie and Ben [Wheeler] were together, and then we just played poor cricket. He said it was a rather disappointing way to exit the competition. “We played really good cricket up to this point, and we watched a lot of the other sides play and we know that we’re definitely good enough to win this competition but, obviously, we’ve just taken that right out of the equation now.”New Zealand will play South Africa in Lincoln on Monday in the fifth place playoff semi-final.

Rangers given boost in Xavi Simons chase

Rangers have received a boost in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain’s Xavi Simons with the news from L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) that he is yet to sign a new contract.

The lowdown

A report from Spanish outlet AS (via Glasgow Times) shortly before the turn of the year claimed that Rangers were leading the race for Simons, having opened talks with his agent Mino Raiola. The teenager, who joined PSG from Barcelona in the summer of 2019, is out of contract at the end of the current season.

Simons, who can play as an attacking midfielder, right winger and centre forward, has made four senior appearances for PSG, including two Coupe de France outings in the past month. He has also twice made the bench in Ligue 1 this season without getting any minutes.

The latest

The report from L’Equipe (via Get French Football News) claimed that PSG are at risk of losing Simons on a free transfer in the summer, having apparently become frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities afforded to him in the French capital.

Before he signs a new deal in Paris, the player wants guarantees that he will either be allowed to leave on loan for the remainder of the campaign or be properly integrated into the senior setup.

The verdict

This is a huge update from a Rangers perspective. It raises the genuine possibility that Simons will leave the Parc des Princes, and the Scottish champions appear to be at the front of the queue.

It would be some signing for Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side. The Daily Record’s Robbie Copeland has written that the 18-year-old is ‘possibly the most exciting name Rangers have been linked with’; while another sports journalist in Maxi Angelo has raved about the teenager’s ‘spectacular’ showings in the UEFA Youth League after he produced three goals and six assists in the group stage of the tournament.

Even if the £1.6m-rated gem does sign a new deal at PSG, all hope may not be lost. If Simons gets his loan wish, he could still end up at Rangers on a temporary basis.
