The second one-day international of South Africa’s India tour, on February 24, has been shifted to Gwalior. The Indian board (BCCI) confirmed the shift via a media release but did not specify the reason. However, it is reportedly believed that a section of the Green Park stadium, allotted for students, was not in good condition and thus the officials did not want to risk hosting an international match. The Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association has apparently decidedly to rebuild the stand in question. The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association was quick to offer its support to the BCCI by hosting the match. South Africa’s touring security unit will travel to Gwalior to inspect the Captain Roop Singh Stadium, which last hosted an ODI in November 2007 when Pakistan toured.Kanpur was the venue for India’s series-squaring Test win over South Africa in April 2008, where the visitors lost the final match by eight wickets after their batting line-up crumbled on an under-prepared surface. Kanpur last hosted a Test between India and Sri Lanka late in 2009, and an ODI between the hosts and England in November 2008.The first ODI will be played in Jaipur on February 21 and the third and final game will be held in Ahmedabad on February 27.

Raina called up, Sreesanth and Karthik back

Suresh Raina, who made his international debut in 2005 and has played 87 ODIs, has been called up for the second Test

The Indian selectors, who have been under fire for having named an unbalanced squad for the first Test, made the correction by getting rid of the extra seam bowler and drafting in a proper reserve batsman, Suresh Raina. Also in contention for a spot in Kolkata, should VVS Laxman not return to full fitness, is Dinesh Karthik who pushed his case for a recall with two centuries in the Duleep Trophy final last week.Sreesanth, who missed India’s last two Tests with a thigh strain, also made his way back into the squad. The back-up seamers, Sudeep Tyagi and Abhimanyu Mithun, and reserve wicketkeeper, Wriddhiman Saha, were dropped from the squad for the Nagpur Test that India lost by an innings and six runs.By calling in Karthik, who has a much better batting record in first-class cricket than Saha, they gave the team extra cushion in the batting department. Saha, who unwittingly became a villain by having to debut as a batsman because of the injuries on the morning of the match, will be left wondering why he was dropped when his primary skill, wicketkeeping, wasn’t even tested. Karthik last played in the second Test against Bangladesh in Mirpur recently. The biggest story of the squad, though, was the selection of Raina, who made his international debut in 2005 and has played 87 ODIs. Of the younger crop of middle-order Indian batsmen, Raina is the first one to have cemented his place in the ODI and Twenty20 sides. Since his first international century – during the Asia Cup in June 2008 – he has been a permanent member of the ODI middle order and has averaged 46.61 at a strike-rate of 97.70. He is primed for a Test debut should Laxman fail the fitness race for the Kolkata Test. Being a left-hand batsman should make Raina a serious consideration after India’s right-hand batsmen struggled against Paul Harris’ outside-the-leg line in Nagpur.Sreesanth will be a welcome addition to the squad after Ishant Sharma bowled 28 wicketless overs in Nagpur. A few hours before the selectors met, Sreesanth confirmed to Cricinfo that he was fully fit and had been bowling regularly at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. He recently made his comeback from a long injury layoff with a five-for against Sri Lanka in Kanpur, but strained his thigh in Chittagong.Squad: MS Dhoni (capt/wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Murali Vijay, Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, S Badrinath, Harbhajan Singh, Amit Mishra, Zaheer Khan, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Dinesh Kartik, Suresh Raina.

Journo drops claim on MUFC transfer targets

Manchester United are yet to make any moves in the first week of the January transfer window, but there have now been further claims made on two midfielders that Rangnick could bring in at Old Trafford.

What’s the word?

Sky Sports journalist, Dharmesh Sheth, took to The Transfer Show to confirm that Manchester United are interested in Ruben Neves and Boubacar Kamara.

Speaking on the Sky Sports’ show dedicated to transfer rumours, he said:

“Make no mistake about it, Man United have been in the market for a midfielder, even in the last transfer window.”

“Marseille’s Boubacar Kamara, and Wolves’ Ruben Neves, who performed so well at Old Trafford on Monday, are two of a number of midfielders that Manchester United are looking at.”

Kamara is out of contract in June 2022, so there is potential for Manchester United to swoop in on a pre-contract agreement with the view to sign the player on a free transfer in the summer, however, Neves is contracted to Wolves until 2024.

Fans will be buzzing

Fans of the Manchester giants will be buzzing to hear that there seems to be some interest in signing players in such a key position for the side to improve, with many of them taking to social media to highlight the importance of adding midfielders to the current squad.

One fan Tweeted;

“It is clear and obvious that we need a better engine in the midfield. current midfielders are not trusted by the backline and frontline hence passes are avoided to them. we have the best strikers and good defence if they sort it out we are back in the game. Pls #MUFC.”

The Portuguese midfielder, Neves, has the fourth most key passes in the Premier League this term with 23 in total, and 22 outside of the box with only Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander Arnold and Bruno Fernandes ahead of him, according to One Versus One.

That shows he’d certainly add an extra dose of creativity to Rangnick’s squad.

In terms of Marseille’s midfielder, Kamara, according to SofaScore, the 22-year-old has won the majority of his duels (56%) and has been successful in the majority of his dribbles (63%) for the Ligue One side, which would be welcome at United as their current side are losing the majority of their defensive battles (50.9%) in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see how Rangnick moves in the January transfer window, whether he will persist with the current squad until the summer or make new additions to revive the second half of their season.

However, the addition of either Neves or Kamara would surely leave the Old Trafford faithful jumping for joy considering their talents.

Australia secure Chappell-Hadlee Trophy

The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy has remained in Australian hands after Ricky Ponting and Cameron White led their team to a six-wicket win that secured the series 3-1

The Chappell-Hadlee Trophy has remained in Australian hands after Ricky Ponting and Cameron White led their team to a six-wicket win that secured the series 3-1. Rain played some part in the outcome but it was mostly New Zealand’s watered-down batting display that left their fans feeling gloomy and consigned Saturday’s fifth match in Wellington to dead-rubber status. The hosts had only themselves to blame for failing to bat out their overs and after rain reduced the target from 239 off 50 overs to 200 from 34 overs, Australia found their way home with 17 balls to spare. Cameron White and Michael Hussey completed the chase, which was set up by Ponting and Shane Watson, and despite a couple of quick wickets in the middle from Daniel Vettori the visitors were on track for most of the evening. The Man of the Match, White was cool with an unbeaten 50 and Hussey finished on 28, easing any tension the Australians felt when Adam Voges (34) was caught at midwicket with 50 runs still required. Shane Bond had kicked things off well for New Zealand with Brad Haddin caught at slip in the first over but Ponting and Watson cruised from there.Ponting was powerful with back-foot drives and pulls and, although he should have been lbw for 19, he reached his fifty from 34 balls before being trapped in front by Vettori from his next delivery. Watson (32) was also lbw to Vettori, hurried by an arm ball, but in the reduced contest New Zealand needed a bigger run of wickets to have a good chance. It was always going to be tough for New Zealand to defend their total after they were sent in and failed to bat out their overs for the second consecutive match. They enjoyed a quick start thanks to Brendon McCullum and an entertaining finish courtesy of some clean hitting from Daryl Tuffey but in between they struggled desperately and for 22 overs through the middle of the innings, failed to strike a boundary.Failing to bat out your overs is considered a cardinal sin in one-day cricket and New Zealand will plead for forgiveness after the innings ended with a possible 35 balls to spare. Australia bowled well but wickets also were thrown away; Shanan Stewart and Ross Taylor were caught on the boundary early in their innings and the openers McCullum and Martin Guptill gave soft catches to the infield.Nathan Hauritz picked up three wickets and there were two each to Watson, James Hopes and Mitchell Johnson as the early and late bursts from New Zealand bookended a painful grind. When James Franklin (10) was unluckily bowled off his leg attempting a sweep off Hauritz, they were 177 for 7 and a sub-200 total was on the cards.Tuffey ensured that didn’t happen as he launched three sixes in a row off Hauritz, over square leg, midwicket and straight down the ground, in an over that cost 22. It was a remarkable explosion from a man who in 87 previous ODIs had only hit one six, and he also cleared the boundary off Watson and finished with his highest one-day international score of 34.His mauling of Hauritz encouraged New Zealand to take the batting Powerplay but when Gareth Hopkins edged behind off Watson from the first ball of it, they were immediately back in trouble. Tuffey was snared by a brilliant return catch from Ryan Harris and 19 from nine deliveries off Shane Bond helped until he was caught at mid-on off Johnson and the innings was over.It was a deeply disappointing outcome for New Zealand following a promising start in which McCullum and Guptill – Peter Ingram was dropped for this match – raced to 63 for 0 in the eighth over. McCullum was quick to put Australia on the back foot and early on pulled Harris for a flat six that landed in the Eden Park construction area.He followed with a six flicked over square leg off a free-hit from Doug Bollinger, whose first three overs leaked 30, while at the other end Guptill found boundary with ease. Guptill was especially strong through and over cover as the Australians erred in line and gave him too much width. However, the area brought Guptill’s downfall when for the second time in the series he was caught at short cover, this time for 30 from 22 balls off Watson. The dismissal showed a lack of judgment from Guptill, who had just struck two boundaries and had no need to risk trying to drive wide of the catcher.McCullum continued to attack and struck sixes over square leg and cover off Johnson and Watson. But Taylor was less fluent and had eased to 15 from 37 deliveries when he attempted to force his way out of the rut by targeting the short square-leg boundary with a flick off Hopes only to be well caught by Hussey running around from deep midwicket. That classy piece of fielding sparked Australia and they collected five wickets in 11 overs. The debutant Stewart went too hard too soon and was caught at long-on off Hauritz for 4, before the key wicket of McCullum, who chipped Hauritz tamely to short midwicket for 61. A procession of wickets followed and New Zealand found it too difficult to climb back in to the game.

Newcastle could swoop for Amadou Haidara

Newcastle United could rival Manchester United in the race to sign Amadou Haidara from RB Leipzig, according to The Mirror.

The lowdown

Newcastle have splashed out £39m so far on two January additions in right-back Kieran Trippier and striker Chris Wood. The Athletic’s David Ornstein recently claimed that they could have as much as £100m to spend this month.

Haidara is predominantly a central midfielder who is occasionally been deployed as a number 6 or out wide. He is currently representing Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations alongside another reported Newcastle target in Yves Bissouma.

The latest

According to The Mirror, Haidara is apparently high on Ralf Rangnick’s wish list at Old Trafford, adding that the German has already ‘put in calls to his old club’.

Leipzig were willing to listen and ‘verbally agreed’ a fee of £33m, but the Red Devils appear to be reluctant to back Rangnick in the transfer market given that he has only been appointed until the end of the season.

The situation has duly ‘caught the eye’ of Newcastle’s PIF ownership, who are now ‘eager to muscle in on a deal’ during the January transfer window.

The verdict

Haidara appears to be a very well-rounded midfielder. When compared to positional peers in the top five European leagues, he ranks in the 85th percentile for both shots and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes (via FBRef).

Beyond that, his numbers for progressive passing (93rd percentile), progressive carries (85th) and blocks (93rd) also stand out, while his playing profile is similar to Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham and Leicester City’s Youri Tielemans.

What’s more, Leipzig’s technical director Christopher Vivell has marvelled at Haidara’s ‘irrepressible will to win’, in addition to his ‘technique and understanding of the game’.

The Mali midfielder could be a difference-maker on Tyneside if Newcastle take full advantage of Man United’s dithering.
