South Africa have 16 days to prepare for the three-Test series against India that will be the hallmark of their summer. They came back from a drawn series in the UAE against Pakistan with some answers and a trio of questions regarding their squad, which will be picked on Wednesday. There are three crucial positions to be decided for the hosts: the additional seamer, the spinner and the No.6 batsman.Lonwabo Tsotosbe and Wayne Parnell were both included in South Africa’s Test squad against Pakistan but neither played a match. The position for the fourth seamer is likely to be a straight shootout between the two left-armers, with Tsotsobe inching ahead. He had more game time in the UAE, playing both T20s and four of the five ODIs. He topped the charts in the ODI series, taking seven wickets.Parnell played just one match, bowled 8.5 overs and went wicketless. He was making his comeback from a six month lay-off because of a groin injury. It’s for that reason that South Africa’s assistant coach Vincent Barnes thinks Tsotsobe will get the nod ahead of Parnell. “I don’t think Wayne is match fit so I think it would be risky playing him,” Barnes told ESPNcricinfo. “He is a very talented youngster and will definitely be considered in the future but there has been no situation to judge him when he’s been tired, as he will be in a Test, in the last few months.”There was talk of Parnell returning home during the tour to the UAE but when his domestic team, the Warriors, were eliminated from the MTN40 those thoughts were scrapped. The national team management thought he would benefit from more time with Barnes, particularly with making small adjustments to his action. “I’ve tried to get him to be a bit more upright,” Barnes said. “The angle of his run-up has changed, his delivery stride has changed and he is getting late swing. He has a similar action to Mitchell Johnson and he sometimes falls away.”Parnell did not pull off the new moves as expected and from what Barnes saw in the one game Parnell played, he may need more work. “He went back to his old action and started looking the way he did when he just arrived back on the scene. It is difficult to change an action during the game, so obviously we couldn’t work on it that game. He is learning about consistency with pace and swinging the ball.”On Barnes’ evidence it seems Tsotsobe is a shoe-in for the role. “He bowled very well, in a high pressured environment in the UAE and the only reason he wasn’t used in the Tests is because we thought the conditions weren’t suited to using four pacemen. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be included in the squad for India,” Barnes said. Tsotsobe played as the fourth seamer during the June tour of the West Indies. However, he only took two wickets in the two matches he played. Tsotsobe has also not had much time in the domestic first-class competition. He has played one match with figures of 1 for 104.A scan of the domestic scene shows that the Titans’ Ethy Mbhalati has been the most successful this season. He lies second on the rankings, with 25 wickets. “Names like Vernon Philander, Ryan McLaren and Quinton Friend also pop up as guys who have been bowling well,” said Barnes. The three are the third, fourth and fifth-highest first-class wicket-takers this season.The top wicket-taker in the longest version of the game in the domestic season has been Imran Tahir, with 30 wickets, but with his eligibility to play for South Africa still not confirmed, the spinner role will be contested between Paul Harris and Johan Botha. “Harris has bowled in the set up before and he has done a good job, especially in a holding role and with applying pressure on one end,” Barnes said. They quote a source as saying: “It’s speculation. There are no offers. Cedric has no interest in leaving Arsenal.”

This comes after it was reported that Newcastle and Porto were both keen on a deal to sign the full-back. The initial claim stated that it is Cedric’s preference to remain with the Gunners but this latest report suggests that there is no chance of the Magpies signing him.

The Toon head coach will surely be fuming by this news as it comes as a big blow to his transfer plans heading into the summer.

Newcastle are seemingly interested in signing the defender in the next transfer window and this update suggests that they are set to miss out on him. Missing out on the full-back is a blow for Howe because he would bring versatility and experience to the table. He has played 151 Premier League matches for Southampton and Arsenal combined and has been deployed at left-back and right-back during his career.

His ability to cover both positions demonstrates that he can be used as a back-up at right-back and left-back and this stops the club from needing to sign a specialist in both roles – making the Portuguese international a shrewd addition.

Cedric’s experience in the Premier League suggests that he would have been a reliable option for Howe as he has been able to play at the top level in England for a number of years.

Therefore, he would have been a relatively safe signing in comparison to bringing in a player who has never played in either England or the top-flight, which is another reason why missing out on him is a blow for the Toon.

Seamer Tony Palladino has signed a two year contract for Derbyshire after being released by Essex at the end of the 2010 season. Palladino, 27, started his career with Essex in 2003 and played 38 first-class matches for the county taking 86 wickets.”I came to Essex straight from school in London at a young age,” he said. “I can leave the club saying that I loved every minute of playing and I will be sad to move on. I have really enjoyed playing with all the lads during my time at Essex and there is a great set-up to play cricket.”Palladino struggled back from a dislocated shoulder in 2006, good performances for Essex’s second XI earning him more game time in the senior team. He was not able to cement a place in the first XI bowling attack, however, and played just four first-class games in 2010.”The move to Derbyshire is a fresh start for my career and I will be looking to cement more of a first team spot in the team. My opportunities in the first team at Essex were sporadic so more first team cricket is important for me.”I am 27 years old and I believe I’m coming into the best years of my cricket career as a bowler and through playing at Derbyshire in the past, I am confident that the wicket will suit my bowling.”

Embora tenha mantido o clima durante toda sua entrevista coletiva leve, Jair foi enfático ao cravar que o Santos merecia melhor sorte na partida. De acordo com sua opinião, o Peixe foi muito superior ao rival.

-Ficou evidente a mudança de postura nossa no segundo tempo. É um aprendizado. Para que possamos entrar no próximo jogo como terminamos o primeiro tempo. Entramos com um pouco de receio, Palmeiras fez uma marcação muito forte no campo de defesa. O passado é imutável. Temos que transformar as atitudes e chances criadas em gols – analisou, e completou:

– Se você parar para analisar, o Palmeiras foi superior no primeiro tempo e nós no segundo. Só que se compararmos esses dois tempos, o do Santos foi muito melhor, com muito mais chances criadas e possibilidade de gols. Mas eu sei que isso não nos fará passar de fase, precisamos fazer o gol. O torcedor teria ficado mais feliz se tivéssemos jogado mal, mas ganhado.

O Santos terá dois dias de trabalhos antes do jogo de volta contra o Palmeiras, nesta terça-feira, às 20h, também no Pacaembu. Qualquer vitória alvinegra por um gol de diferença leva a decisão aos pênaltis.

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Yousuf has signed up to play with Bangladesh club Mohammedan Sporting in the Premier Division Cricket League in Bangladesh. The club has brought in Yousuf in place of Sri Lanka allrounder Farveez Maharoof, who returned home after sustaining an injury.Yousuf, 36, who was ruled out the Test series against in South Africa in November due to a groin injury, was not picked for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand due to concerns over his fitness. Yusuf has played 90 Tests for Pakistan, averaging 52.29, but since the beginning of 2008 he has averaged just under 35 in 11 Tests, with a solitary hundred.”I have no idea about the competition [in Bangladesh] but you know cricket is cricket,” Yousuf told reporters after he completed the contractual formalities at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka. “I can understand the standard and nature of the competition after playing the first couple of games. I want to play all the matches if I am not selected for national duty.
