Australia batsman David Warner has said players participating in the upcoming Under-19 World Cup in Australia should aim to make it to the senior squad for the World Cup in 2015, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Sixteen teams will participate in the tournament to be held in Queensland (Brisbane, Townsville and Sunshine Coast) from August 11-26, 2012.”I think each individual who will be appearing in the Under-19 World Cup in 2012 needs to have goals of returning here for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 because if you are good enough to be where you are today, you have to be good enough to be in that squad and that environment in 2015,” Warner said.Warner, 25, was part of the squad for the 2006 edition, held in Sri Lanka. He scored 91 runs in five matches with one half-century as a middle-order batsman. Since his international debut in 2009, he has established himself as a destructive opener in all forms of the game for Australia. Warner said the tournament is a good finishing school for promising players hoping to play for the country.”It’s funny, I batted in the middle-order back then, and now I am opening the batting. I can see where I have come from in respect to changing my game to be the best I can,” Warner said. “Everyone’s got to start somewhere, and for me it was batting in the middle-order and bowling a little bit of leg spin.”As a player, I think I’ve matured into a better person and a better team player – not saying that I wasn’t a good team player, but you learn how to actually play the game as an individual and as a team player. I also think you become more knowledgeable about the game.”South Africa batsman Hashim Amla, part of the 2000 edition in New Zealand, said the tournament teaches youngsters invaluable cricket and life lessons. Amla scored 191 runs in eight games with two fifties. He made his international debut in 2004.”It is a great platform to launch your international career. Look at Wayne Parnell who had a great tournament for South Africa at the event in 2008 (Malaysia) and a year later, he was making his international debut,” Amla said. “The challenge for the youngsters is how they manage themselves after they have made their debuts at such an early age.”

All-round Watson knocks down Ireland

A commanding performance from Shane Watson delivered a handsome opening World Twenty20 victory for Australia over Ireland

A commanding performance from Shane Watson delivered a handsome opening World Twenty20 victory for Australia over Ireland, as George Bailey’s team showed aggressive intent to pursue the one trophy missing from the national team’s display cabinet.Ireland had fancied their chances of upsetting Australia, but were left with their odds of progression diminished and their ears ringing from a few verbal barbs delivered by opponents in no mood to be accommodating to a team they had briefly been ranked below on the ICC’s T20 rankings earlier this month.Watson influenced proceedings from the first ball of the match, a bouncer Ireland’s captain Will Porterfield hooked to fine leg. He returned to the bowling crease to snuff out a mid-innings revival, then smashed 51 to ensure a modest chase that never assumed anything more than nuisance dimensions.Mitchell Starc and Hogg also delivered telling spells to help keep Ireland quiet, their 20 overs devoid of sustained momentum save for a rearguard stand of 50 between Kevin and Niall O’Brien from the depths of 33 for 4. Kevin O’Brien hinted at the mastery he had shown against England in the 2011 World Cup, but both he and his brother were out-thought by Watson in the same over.Aside from Watson’s all-round prowess, the other hallmark of Australia’s display was their aggression, manifested in a series of verbal stoushes with their opponents. The umpires intervened more than once, and no-one was left in any doubt about the Australians intent to make life as uncomfortable as possible for their opposition.Australia’s pursuit needed to be dogged by early wickets for Ireland to have a chance, but Watson and David Warner played with plenty of sense. They were helped by a wayward Boyd Rankin, who gave away four wides on the way to conceding 12 runs from the third over. Trent Johnston was taken for 19 in the fourth, and from that moment the result never seemed in any great doubt.George Dockrell accounted for Warner, who punched to deep midwicket, and Paul Stirling almost grasped a one-handed return catch from Watson. Having failed to take the half chance, both Stirling and Dockrell were to feel the brunt of Watson’s power, Australia’s vice-captain posting a half century from his 28th ball. An overly languid run through to the non-striker’s end was punished by Johnston’s direct hit, but by then Watson had done more than enough to put victory within sight and also underline his importance to Australia’s campaign.Michael Hussey was lbw to Kevin O’Brien, and Cameron White offered a difficult chance that Johnston put down off Rankin, leaving Australia to conclude their chase with less certainty than Watson and Warner had started it.Watson had taken the new ball for Australia, a move Ireland’s captain Porterfield would have noted from the warm-up games. What he did not expect was a first-ball bumper, as Watson tested the bounce to be extracted from a flint-hard Premadasa pitch. The ball was well-directed, Porterfield’s hook shot was hurried, and Mitchell Starc sauntered in from fine leg to take the catch. There were runs to be found in the pitch, Stirling cracking the final ball of the over to the cover fence to prove it, but Australia’s bowlers were sharp and varied enough to prevent Ireland from finding any sort of rhythm. Starc found a little swing but it was bounce that did for Stirling, his top edge sailing high for Watson to make a testy running catch look routine.Bailey introduced Maxwell’s off-breaks for the sixth over, and was rewarded when Ed Joyce toe-ended a drive to mid off. Brad Hogg’s introduction followed, and he too struck in his opening over when Gary Wilson played around a delivery pitching in line and straightening to win Aleem Dar’s lbw verdict. None of Ireland’s batsmen looked entirely capable of reading Hogg’s variations.Ireland were stuck in the T20 predicament of early wickets, the halfway point passing at a wobbly 46 for 4. The brothers O’Brien were left to fashion a salvaging partnership, Kevin O’brien hinting at his potential for destruction with a handful of boundaries. He responded to taunts from the Australian fieldsmen by clattering Starc through midwicket and cover, and the 50-stand was raised. But Niall O’Brien was unable to follow suit, bowled by Watson’s slower ball when trying to heave across the line.Watson was delivering a keynote spell, and he made it more so by coaxing Kevin O’Brien to touch a shortish, sharpish delivery on its way through to Matthew Wade. Called on to deliver the last over of the innings as well as the first, Watson allowed the innings’ only six to Nigel Jones, but the concession of 12 from the final six balls still left Australia’s batsmen with a chase they were always likely to negotiate in some comfort.

Wade's tenuous grip on gloves

Australia’s wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is acutely aware of his tenuous place at the top of what is by far the national team’s most competitive market

Australia’s wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is acutely aware of his tenuous place at the top of what is by far the national team’s most competitive market. At a time when high quality batsmen and spin bowlers are in short supply and fast bowlers are almost as likely to drop with injury as they are to flourish, Australia has seldom had a more bounteous supply of glovemen. While Phillip Hughes was recalled after his first Sheffield Shield century of the summer, Wade knows that behind him in the queue lurks a small army of stumpers. His predecessor Brad Haddin, keen on one more Ashes tour, is swinging from the hip for New South Wales with a reconfigured batting grip. Tim Paine has battled back manfully from a serious finger fracture and took the Australia A gloves this year. Chris Hartley maintains a never less than fastidious standard behind the stumps for Queensland and has grown his batting notably. And this is all without mentioning the likes of Peter Nevill, Tom Triffitt and Peter Handscomb, all considered worthy of eventual national call-ups. Wade regularly runs his eyes across the competition, the resurgent Haddin in particular, and has resolved to play each match in the manner Ricky Ponting approached the Perth Test – as his last.”Every time you walk out onto the ground for Australia you’ve got to live that moment. Every time could be your last,” Wade said. “So in that regard, I do live the moment I suppose for Australia. I keep an eye on cricket games and, yeah, Hadds is playing really nicely and he was always going to. A world-class player. Anyone who’s played 60 Tests and goes back and plays first-class and domestic cricket is always going to do very well.”There’s so many good keepers in Australia. It’s not just one or two people. In a matter of months there can be keepers come out of the woodwork and play good cricket so if I’m worried too much about them, then my performance out here is going to be affected. It’s just about preparing well and giving myself the best chance.”Wade was unsatisfied with his returns against South Africa, both as a wicketkeeper and a batsman. His best, exemplified by a reflex take to dismiss Robin Peterson off Nathan Lyon and then a rapid 68 in the first innings of the Perth Test, was of a glittering standard. His worst, a missed stumping of Graeme Smith in Adelaide and an agitated slog at Peterson to be dismissed in the second innings at the WACA ground, was not. There is less concern from Wade when another missed chance is mentioned, Faf du Plessis edging Ben Hilfenhaus in and out of his gloves on the tense final day in Adelaide, for it was the result of his decision to move up to the stumps in an effort to interrupt du Plessis’ otherwise serene batting rhythm. If Wade set the trap but could not bring it to completion, he consoles himself with the fact that an opportunity had been created.”It plays on your mind definitely after the game, but I was lucky that we had two days off and were starting another Test match,” Wade said. “Everyone was really supportive. I went up there to make something happen, the game was drifting on a little bit, something did happen and it just didn’t stick that day. Two days later I got a catch off Nathan Lyon and it stuck. That’s unfortunately the game I play, one will stick one day and some will fall out others.”Up to the stumps is where you can really challenge yourself and change a game. You can make or break a game up to the stumps, as simple as that. That when the pressure’s on and I think every keeper likes getting up there and having a real crack, whether it’s a quick or a spinner. It’s going to be interesting, hopefully I get to India and I can keep in similar conditions in the West Indies where it spins a lot more, and challenge myself a little bit more.”Wade’s enthusiasm for the visit to India is a rare sentiment, for the subcontinent provides a more sustained test of a wicketkeeper’s ability than almost anywhere else on the globe. However Wade has reasoned from his West Indies experiences that lower bounce suits his diminutive stature, making him more comfortable against the fizzing, turning ball in Delhi than he is when keeping up to the bouncing variety in Brisbane or Perth.”In the West Indies I enjoyed keeping up to the stumps,” Wade said. “Australia’s a different kettle of fish when you keep up, it’s not as much side spin, it’s more bounce, which is probably the hardest thing for me to keep to because of my height, the bounce in the wickets can get up around my chest so that’s probably harder for me.”In Australia I’ve learned a lot over the past four or five years keeping up to the stumps and I’ve got to continue to improve that. I enjoy keeping up tot he stumps because then you’re in the game, and you’re challenged a lot. In Adelaide I probably didn’t have the greatest game up to the stumps, I kept as well as I did in Perth in Adelaide, I just a missed a couple of chances and it gets highlighted a lot more – as it should – than other things.”Once, those lapses would have been terminal for a Test keeper’s career, but now the requirement to add runs as well as dismissals has had the effect of spreading their responsibilities, and also their chances to justify their place. “It’s definitely an allrounder’s position but it’s probably better for the keepers now to have two positions,” Wade said. “Back in the day if you didn’t keep well enough you got dropped, simple as that. Now you’ve got both aspects, batting and keeping, so it’s probably a good thing for us because we’re expected to make runs and keep also – we’ve got two opportunities to do well in the game.”Given how many are straining to have the job Wade currently enjoys, two chances at success are certainly better than one.
