Mathews embarks with plenty to prove

Angelo Mathews embarks on the Champions Trophy as a largely untested commodity. Can he use this platform to successfully secure his position at the helm and lead Sri Lanka to success?

Angelo Mathews hopes to build on Sri Lanka’s success in major ICC tournaments•AFP

Both on and off the field, Angelo Mathews gives few emotions away. There was a time when he was among the team’s most exuberant men, but experience, and the onset of responsibility, have seemingly dulled his zest for public elation. He is now equally stoic with a dozen microphones set before him.As Sri Lanka departed for the Champions Trophy in England, Mathews had little to say, aside from trotting out worn-out assurances that the side would seek to capitalise on its strengths, and had set its sights on the semi-finals as their first target. Four months into his tenure, Mathews is already proficient in the art mastered by all jaded captains – that of talking without saying much at all. Only, Sri Lanka’s problems in the approach to the tournament did not need vocalising. The IPL has laid them bare.Nine of Sri Lanka’s probable first XI travelled to India for the tournament, and only Thisara Perera and Sachithra Senanayake have returned with any semblance of form behind them. Of the three Sri Lankan captains, Kumar Sangakkara dropped himself from the side, mid-season, citing a poor run, while Mathews himself surrendered the captaincy when his own place in an ailing team became threatened. Mahela Jayawardene remained at the helm of Delhi Daredevils throughout the tournament, but the team finished dead last, with him having done barely anything with the bat to prevent it.Among the others, Tillakaratne Dilshan failed to fire in five outings, while Jeevan Mendis and Kusal Perera largely warmed the dugout benches during the last two months. Lasith Malinga meanwhile, who had been among the IPL’s safest bets in previous seasons, was as bipolar for his franchise as he has been for Sri Lanka in the last 18 months.Over the past week, the team has arrived piecemeal from across the Palk Strait and headed immediately into Champions Trophy training sessions, to join the six non-IPL cricketers who have been at it for almost a month.”I’m not really worried about our form,” Mathews said. “The IPL is completely different to what we will play now. We are professionals, and we know how to prepare for a tournament like this. The boys are pretty confident of themselves. The guys who were in India and Sri Lanka have all trained well, and there was a training tournament here. When we prepare for the Champions Trophy, we put in a lot of effort, and as a team we are ready for this.”Despite his optimism, Mathews will know the team has further to go than if they had all embarked on their flight to England with runs and wickets to commend them. However, there is also truth in his assertion that the Champions Trophy is a different beast. Alongside Pakistan, Sri Lanka have been the most consistent side at major tournaments in the last six years, making it to four finals in their last six ICC events. Their results leading in to each tournament have not always suggested they would progress to the final. On each of those occasions, the team has ignited at the beginning of the tournament, finding, as a collective, gears that elude them in many bilateral affairs. By the time the group stage is complete, they have been marked as favourites, and have ridden that momentum to the final, where vexing decisions and uncharacteristic nerves have hastened their ultimate demise.Chief among the reasons for their sudden surge has, in the past, been leadership. Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara matured as cricketers before they were handed the reins, and have proven shrewd as captains in major tournaments.Mathews may possess a steel temperament, but he has not yet shown himself as a canny leader, and his batting form is a law unto itself – failing abruptly just when formidable scores are beginning to cluster together. His bowling has been more consistent, and it is this that has helped make him a vital part of the Sri Lanka side since his arrival. He is yet, however, to truly establish himself on the international stage in the way that almost every Sri Lankan captain has before him.The Champions Trophy is his biggest assignment yet, as captain, and his challenge has been magnified by the state of his own game, as well as those of the side’s senior batsmen. If Mathews can stir up the familiar courage Sri Lanka teams have embraced in recent tournaments, he will emerge a secure leader, and repay the faith he has been afforded. If he cannot, he will remain a young captain on trial, with plenty still to prove.

Lehmann slams self-inflicted damage

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has conceded the batting inadequacies on such gaudy display at Lord’s will take time to be rectified, not only within the Test team but at the domestic levels beneath

Daniel Brettig at Lord's19-Jul-2013Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has conceded the batting inadequacies on such gaudy display at Lord’s will take time to be rectified, not only within the Test team but at the domestic levels beneath. Lehmann spoke frankly of his side’s abject slide from 42 for 0 to 128 all out, saying he had criticised the team heavily within the dressing room. He also revealed Shane Watson’s wrong-headed referral of his lbw, the day’s obvious pivot point, had been triggered by his partner Chris Rogers.Across the day television cameras panned often to Lehmann, not least because he has chosen to listen to the commentary on radio. At Trent Bridge he had made his disgust plain when decisions went against his side, but here he offered expressions apparently drawn from the phrase “if you didn’t laugh, you’d cry”. But he was plain in his distaste for the way Australia had batted, giving up virtually all their pretensions as Ashes challenges in the space of little more than a session. Asked whether he had read the riot act to his players, Lehmann replied: “Yep. Done and dusted. That will stay in the rooms.””The top order failed again and we need to make sure we’re learning from our mistakes and probably haven’t done that from the first innings at Notts to the first innings here,” Lehmann said. “We showed glimpses but we’ve got to bat better. It was more one-day batting than Test match batting. We know we have to improve our batting over periods of time and bat a lot more than 55 overs. We believe the plans are right. Our shot selection was poor today. Simple as that. I think eight out of the 10 were self-inflicted to be perfectly honest.”Since his appointment Lehmann has spoken often of letting his players express themselves on the field, but not without certain boundaries. The issues witnessed at Lord’s, from another squandered start by Watson to panicked shots by Usman Khawaja and Phillip Hughes, have also been glimpsed plentifully in Australian domestic matches, particularly now that the Sheffield Shield has been splintered by the dominance of the Big Bash League.”There’s freedom but there’s also rules within that, and at the moment we’re not following them as a batting group,” Lehmann said. “Some of the shots today were certainly not what we talk about and using match awareness is the biggest thing for us, and making sure we’re playing them at the right time in the right circumstances.Look away now: Darren Lehmann watches Australia collapse•Getty Images

“Domestic level we haven’t made enough hundreds either. Batting time is hard work and you see the England players have had a lot of hundreds in their top five. It’s going to take time for the players to trust and believe they belong at this level. They certainly have all the attributes to play at this level, there’s no doubt about that. It’s the execution and the match awareness. All state coaches would be saying the same thing about how to play long innings because in state cricket we don’t have too many of those either.”As for the fraught use of the DRS, which had the domino effect of clouding Rogers’ thinking after wrongly approving Watson’s decision to refer his lbw so the left-hander did not review his own dismissal, a freak departure to a Graeme Swann full toss that was sliding past leg stump.”Bucky Rogers got that wrong with Shane, he told Shane to take it,” Lehmann said. “That’s just the way it goes sometimes, and then he should have used one on himself but he probably didn’t want to after wasting one. As long as they learn from it that’s the thing. We’ve certainly got the bowling side of it right with the referrals. Now the batters have to get that right.””I think he’s close to having a big score, but I don’t want to keep saying that either to be perfectly honest,” Lehmann said. “We want him to make big scores. He’s a very good player and we’ve had a couple of good starts to be fair, 0 for 84 in the second innings of Notts and 0 for 42 here. We should be making big runs from there, a lot more than 128.”As for how Australia can improve, they need look no further than Ian Bell, twice already a centurion in this series. “He just stays within his limitations doesn’t he,” Lehmann said. “That’s Test matching batting at its best.”

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMohammad Nabi ran through the Namibia line-up with a six-wicket haul and Nawroz Mangal’s unbeaten fifty tightened Afghanistan’s grip on the opening day in Windhoek. Barring Stephan Baard’s 72 at No 3, no Namibia batsman was able to score more than 30 as the hosts were dismissed for 190 in the 65th over.Namibia began well after winning the toss, Xander Pitchers and Pikky Ya France putting on 49 for the first wicket. Pitchers was the first to go, caught behind off Shapoor Zadran. Nabi took over after that, sending back Ya France and Craig Williams. Sarel Burger, the home captain, fell for a duck to Rahmat Shah as Namibia slipped to 65 for 4. Baard steered the innings past 100 but Nabi removed him in the 48th over and it was down Bernard Scholtz to push Namibia close to 200. Nabi finished with 6 for 33, his maiden five-for in all formats.Afghanistan crawled to 62 for 1 in 29 overs, opener Shabir Noori taking 89 balls for his 8 before going leg-before to Burger. Mangal did most of the scoring, hitting eight boundaries in his unbeaten 51.

Dhawan, Karthik set up comfortable win

Shikhar Dhawan made his third century and along with Dinesh Karthik, set up a comfortable win for India

The Report by Abhishek Purohit26-Jul-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsShikhar Dhawan made his third ODI century•AFP

Zimbabwe were expected to provide stiffer opposition to India if the toss went in their favour. It did, and twice, once each with ball and bat, Zimbabwe were in dominating positions. Holding on to them was something different, though, and both times, they fell apart, first against Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik, and then, via a batting collapse.Zimbabwe’s bowlers had a clear opportunity to embarrass India, who realised how difficult it was to bat first at Harare Sports Club with the 9am start. Four of their top five batsmen had fallen cheaply, but the one who hadn’t, Dhawan, made Zimbabwe pay for letting him get away three times. Dhawan made his third century in 17 ODIs, and revived India in a 167-run fifth-wicket partnership with Karthik, who made only his second fifty after comeback.Had the Zimbabwe quicks shown more control, and had their fielders caught better, India would have been in a bigger hole. Dhawan played possibly the most charmed innings of his short international career. He was caught behind off a Kyle Jarvis no-ball when on 3, dropped by the wicketkeeper off the same bowler when on 14 and handed a third life on 70 when deep square leg misjudged what should have been a straightforward catch. To his credit, Dhawan did not let anything loose go waste despite all the wickets and all the chances.Apart from sending down numerous wides and no-balls, Zimbabwe often bowled on the pads to Dhawan, who picked up several boundaries through the leg side – pulling, whipping, nudging and lofting. Just after the costly no-ball to Dhawan, Jarvis conceded four leg-byes, and also gave the batsman overpitched deliveries outside off stump, which were driven for fours.Dhawan was losing partners quickly, though. The same batsmen who could have hardly been bothered in the chase on Wednesday were made to struggle. The new balls swung, seamed, bounced, and skidded. Brian Vitori struck with his first ball, after having been left out in the first game. Rohit Sharma, having said just before his 100th ODI started that one needed to be careful against the new balls as an opener, chased a widish good length ball, and edged to slip.Virat Kohli, coming off a match-winning hundred, looked largely solid before he pushed Jarvis to mid-on, departing in anger after twice asking for the third umpire to check whether the ball had carried. Ambati Rayudu was brought crashing down from his debut half-century in a painful 25-ball existence during which he was put down by the bowler Vitori and was beaten on numerous occasions. For once, Suresh Raina – who has made no secret of his desire to bat up the order – had plenty of overs, but nudged his 11th delivery down the leg side to the keeper. At 65 for 4, Dhawan looked intent to make good use of his lives and Karthik was in superb touch. Unlike the top order, Karthik left deliveries for a while outside off and waited for the bad balls. Both Dhawan and Karthik ensured the lone spinner, Prosper Utseya, was taken for runs.India’s charge was arrested suddenly when Karthik was run out after a mix-up in the 43rd over, and Dhawan dragged an attempted sweep onto his stumps in the 44th. Zimbabwe were to pay for their slow over-rate, though. Taylor used Sean Williams’ part-time spin for the last over, which was taken for 23 by Vinay Kumar and Mohammed Shami.Zimbabwe pushed India with the bat as well early, but again, could not hold onto a strong position. And once more, it was Vusi Sibanda who threw away another start after dominating the bowlers with powerful hits. Four balls later, Brendan Taylor ran himself out. Soon, it became a flood. Williams, Hamilton Masakadza and Malcolm Waller fell to the spinners to make it 133 for 6.Only a few overs ago, Sibanda was pulling boundaries at will as India’s quick bowlers overdid the short ball on a pitch which had eased out considerably. Vinay Kumar, in particular, was targetted. Sibanda’s second-wicket partnership with Masakadza was worth 64 at close to seven an over and the India bowlers were looking flat. The situation quickly changed when Unadkat was brought back in the 21st over. Sibanda, who had reached his fifty off 57, immediately went after him, but mishit to midwicket. Panic set in with Taylor’s run-out, and Zimbabwe had only themselves to blame for a big defeat, though Prosper Utseya and Elton Chigumbura reduced the margin.

-Aqui no Botafogo, nós (jovens) ganhamos muitas oportunidades.
