Domingo does not rule out SA win

South Africa coach Russel Domingo left open the possibility that South Africa could still emerge victorious in the second Test despite conceding a lead of 139

They did it in Adelaide, when they batted out 124.3 overs in a match they were never trying to win. They did it again in Johannesburg, when they saw off 136 overs and surprised everyone by getting within eight runs of a huge target. Now South Africa are gearing up for Survivor 3: SSC. This time though, survival is not the only objective on the visitors’ minds.Despite falling well behind in the game after conceding a first-innings deficit of 139 and using most of day three to play it safe, South Africa coach Russell Domingo left open the possibility that his team could still win the second Test.”If we can get them under a bit of pressure then they might take a while longer to get the runs and wickets fall,” Domingo said. “We may end up chasing 240 in four sessions, which would mean we’re still very much in the game.”Although Sri Lanka have been prone to collapses in the latter parts of their innings, it would still require South Africa to run through them quickly and the onus will be on Imran Tahir to step up. The legspinner has so far been both inconsistent and unlucky. However, his promotion up the order and his contribution with the bat would have bolstered the self-belief he often needs to perform. “Imran is a confident guy,” Domingo said. “Imran has got a big role for us to play, especially with all the rough outside the left-handers’ off stump.”South Africa know first hand of the difficulty for left-hand batsmen to score at the SSC, following JP Duminy’s laboured 58-ball innings. After showing off a range of sweeps and reverse-sweeps in Galle, Duminy did not even know where to find the broom in Colombo. He persisted with shouldering arms, padding up, and the uncertainty eventually got him out.Duminy battled for an hour and eight minutes, and contributed just three runs to South Africa’s cause in a period where the game seemed to drift into nothingness because of the visitors’ unwillingness to move. Domingo, however, explained the safety-first approach was taken with the bigger picture in mind.”Hindsight is a great science. If he had gone for a shot and holes out to mid-on everyone says he is playing irresponsibly. We started brightly but then we lost two wickets in two balls. We have to assess what’s important. JP tried to get us to lunch and then we reassessed. There were very tough conditions for left-handers today.”Because of the slow tempo, South Africa were constantly shifting focus between scoring runs and eating away time, and eventually decided that running down the clock was the best course of action.”We wanted to get what we could with the bat, particularly with Herath bowling over the wicket for quite a long time. Runs and time are both so crucial,” Domingo said. “It would have been great to get another 100 runs, but it would also have been great to have gotten 50 runs less and batted for another two hours. There was a good rear-guard action in Dale and Imran’s partnerships with Hashim, but Sri Lanka still have a substantial lead.”Amla’s slow century was yet another confirmation that South Africa made the right choice in choosing him as their Test leader. He absorbed pressure, thought about the situation all the time, and playing accordingly. “He was really patient and applied himself well,” Domingo said.He also put South Africa in a position from where they can still attack for a while, and if they find themselves defending with the bat, it will probably not be as arduous as it could have been.Domingo was confident South Africa could see off more than 100 overs, even in trying conditions, because they had done it twice recently. “It’s at times like this where they can call back on experience from the last time,” Domingo said. “They’ve been in positions where they didn’t really look like they had a chance of surviving and then came close and survived.”That will be an ominous reality for Sri Lanka, who may be tempted to give themselves time rather than runs and dangle a carrot in front of South Africa. What would Domingo do if he was in Sri Lanka’s shoes?”They’ll probably look to get another 100 or so. I don’t know, they must figure it out themselves,” he said.

O atacante, cria do Ninho, invadiu a área e deixou tudo igual.

SHOW DO URUGUAIO!

Northants lifted by Crook ton

Steven Crook thumped his way to a maiden first-class hundred as Northamptonshire avoided the follow on and gave themselves a chance of saving the game

At some point in the offseason, between 2013’s joyous celebrations and the start of the 2014 campaign, Northamptonshire wronged the gods of fate. How they did that is unclear, but the extent of their rotten luck suggests it may have involved smashing mirrors with black cats, under ladders. From injuries in preseason, to the falling through of no less than three deals for overseas signings, Wantage Road has been a far cry from the smiles and pluck on show last season. If anything, their approach to recruitment and Division One cricket has been a tad naïve.During the afternoon, news came through of two further injuries to compound their misery. Scans revealed that David Sales had torn ankle ligaments after slipping in the field during Northants’ T20 Blast encounter with Durham on Friday. Here, Rob Keogh was officially ruled out of the match after he dislocated and broke a finger when he dropped a catch off Dawid Malan early on in his innings of 154. Both are expect to be out of action for about a month. But, for the first time in what feels like an age, there were a handful of good news stories that hint at a brighter future.Limited-overs captain Alex Wakely, who led the side impeccably during their successful T20 campaign last year, has been making huge strides in his rehabilitation from a ruptured Achilles sustained in March. He is ahead of schedule and, despite initially being ruled out for the entire season, could make a return to the field this term. With the bat, they displayed a steely determination that suggested they are a side still possessing a great deal of fight. Of their three key contributors with the bat, it was two with Middlesex connections, Steven Crook and James Kettleborough on Championship debut, that stood out.Crook, after 11 years and 95 innings, scored his maiden first-class hundred. Coming to the crease six wickets down and his side trailing by 320, he and Andrew Hall put on 144, Northants’ highest partnership of the season, to steer them to safety.Crook lives by the sword

On a maiden first class hundred at Lord’s: “What can I say, it’s an amazing place to get it. It’s the home of cricket… I was privileged enough to play here for a few years. I’ve got close to three figures a few times and I guess batting down the order, you don’t get too many chances to bat long. Also, with the way I play, it’s live by the sword die by the sword. It’s nice to finally get one but more importantly it’s put us in a reasonable position in the game.”
On the flat pitch: “What are you on about, it’s doing all sorts. [Laughs] There’s a little bit in it in terms of consistent bounce. There were a few this afternoon that went through the top and kept a little low.”
On facing former team-mates:”It was all right actually, they were really friendly to me. Although there was a period when Finny got really nasty with some bumpers. Nah, it’s all good fun and I really enjoyed it.”

Watchful for his first 30 balls, operating at a run every other ball, he imposed himself on a tiring Middlesex attack, sharing the scoring burden with Hall, who was also superb. Crook had moved back to Northants in 2013 with a view to playing more Championship cricket, having spent two years with Middlesex as something of a limited-overs specialist. After 62 balls, he had fifty for only the second time in nine innings at Lord’s. The next fifty took just 41 more balls, as he kept a solid base and threw his hands at any width from the seamers. On approach to three figures, his mask began to slip, as punk-rock cool turned to nerves.A fortuitous boundary off Steven Finn, that went directly behind the wicketkeeper, took him to 98, before he failed with a ramp shot aimed in the same direction. A scuffed dab to first slip and a suicidal single nearly saw the end of his partner Maurice Chambers. A four off the first ball of the next over did the trick. No longer does he have more chart hits – achieved with his band, Juliet the Sun – than Championship hundreds. He was all smiles at stumps, at times lost for words trying to describe the feeling of joy at a Lord’s hundred. It was the mention of Kettleborough’s innings, a slick 73 in which he accumulated and then rebuilt, that had Crook at his most sure-minded.”Outstanding,” he said, “it doesn’t come as a shock that he has come out and played as well as he has.” Anyone around Wantage Road for the last two years and Middlesex for the last four can tell you as much.In 2010, aged 17, Kettleborough broke the Bedford School record of 1,287 runs in a single season, set in 2003 by a certain Alastair Cook. That same summer, he captained Middlesex’s to national success in the U-17s competition. At the end of the summer, Northants offered him a contract, which he turned down for the chance to join Middlesex’s academy for two years. In that time, he continually impressed for the county’s 2nd XI but failed to break into the Championship side. When Northants came calling again in 2012, Kettleborough took them up on their offer. His disciplined performance, coupled with Crook’s blows, took Northants past the follow-on target and ensured the deficit going into the second innings was only 104. That, coupled with the demise of Chris Rogers – hooking to deep square leg after a barrage of well-directed short balls from Chambers – has the game well set for an intriguing final day.

Australia 'rusty', but ready – Lehmann

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has conceded his men will be rusty when they tour Zimbabwe this month but he said their long winter’s break was needed after an exhausting 12 months of cricket

Brydon Coverdale18-Aug-20142:20

Darren Lehmann: “We’ve got Zimbabwe and South Africa and then we’ve obviously got a big test in the UAE. I think everyone is jumping out, they just want to play”

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has conceded his men will be rusty when they tour Zimbabwe this month but he said their long winter’s break was needed after an exhausting 12 months of cricket. The Australians depart on Wednesday for their first international matches in nearly five months, and the one-day tri-series begins a hectic period for the team. The series against Zimbabwe and South Africa will be followed in the next 12 months by Tests and limited-overs games against Pakistan in the UAE, a one-day series at home against South Africa, home Tests against India, a home one-day tri-series, the World Cup, a Test tour of the West Indies, and an Ashes tour of England. And after the Ashes, the schedule barely lets up.It is not dissimilar to the heavy schedule Lehmann’s men had over the previous 18 months, when they hosted Tests against South Africa and Sri Lanka, went to India for four Tests, played 10 consecutive Ashes matches and toured South Africa for three more Tests, with plenty of short-form matches thrown in. That is why the rare winter break was so necessary.”Professionally, everyone was tired – coaches were tired, players were very tired, and they did an amazing amount of work in 12 months,” Lehmann told reporters in Brisbane on Monday. “So to get a break before we go on the road for two years was pretty important.”Now the [challenge] is getting us back up to the skill level that we need to compete at international cricket. We’ve got Zimbabwe and South Africa and then we’ve obviously got a big test in the UAE. I think everyone is jumping out, they just want to play.”We’re going to be a bit rusty with the skills, but that’s okay. We’re gonna make mistakes, but that’s okay. What we need to do is build and build and build to become a better Test side, a better one-day side, a better Twenty20 side.”One man who is unquestionably jumping out of his skin to play is Phillip Hughes, who on Saturday was named as a late inclusion for the Zimbabwe tour after Shane Watson was ruled out due to an ankle injury. Hughes enters the series in impeccable form, having scored double-centuries in both one-day and four-day cricket for Australia A over the past few weeks. The absence of Watson and also of David Warner, who will remain at home to prepare for the birth of his first child, could provide Hughes with a chance to audition ahead of the World Cup. However, Aaron Finch may yet find himself opening with Brad Haddin rather than Hughes, and Lehmann said there were no guarantees Hughes would play despite the lack of specialist batsmen in the squad.”He’s in the squad and if he gets a chance I’m sure he’ll take it,” Lehmann said. “We have to find the right balance, whoever that is, whether that’s Phillip in or not in for the first game, we have to sum up the conditions. We have to make sure we get away to a good start, so we’ll be at full-strength early and then see what happens with the tournament from there, how the wickets play and whether it spins or doesn’t.”Australia have plenty of pace bowling options including Ben Cutting and Kane Richardson, along with the left-armers Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc and James Faulkner, but there was no place in the 14-man squad for Australia’s highest-ranked ODI bowler, Clint McKay. Lehmann said McKay’s performances over the past year had led to him being dropped.”In the last 12 months he hasn’t delivered with the new ball for us,” Lehmann said, “and his speed isn’t up to scratch for us and that’s the message we’ve sent to him.”

Ele deixou o campo no intervalo, dando espaço a Berrío (expulso) e iniciou o tratamento no vestiário.

Éverton Ribeiro, Vitinho e Arrascaeta serão melhor avaliados nesta semana, no Ninho do Urubu.

Chapple's heroic blow keeps Lancashire hopes alive

With one heroic blow, Lancashire’s captain Glen Chapple took their relegation fight against Middlesex into a final day

More than any sport cricket is a series of duels within the context of a team game; and as the summer drifts by, the importance of each tiny battle becomes even clearer within the 64 days of each side’s Championship programme. By late September, the pattern of the season is revealed: a Gobelin tapestry of simple shapes and unsuspected intricacies. At precisely 11.30 on the third morning of beguiling contest, Middlesex’s Toby Roland-Jones prepared to bowl the 110th over of Lancashire’s first innings to Glen Chapple. The home side were 293 for 8 and needed seven runs to secure a third bonus point. If they failed to do this or if a wicket fell, Lancashire were relegated, for they could not make up the 19-point margin between the sides.Roland-Jones had been bowling tightly and his first ball was on a good length. Yet Chapple, who has always had a good eye, sweet timing and buckets of courage, hoicked it over midwicket for six. Once again this season, we heard bellows of relief from the players’ balcony and cheers from the pavilion opposite; and almost before their echoes had died, those cheers were redoubled as Lancashire’s warrior-captain squirted three more runs through backward point and declared his side’s innings closed.Without those shots in that very small personal encounter between two fine professional cricketers, the second half of this game could have represented little more than a chore, the routine completion of a very long fixture-list.As it is, Lancashire’s cricketers know that their only objective is to win the match, and by close of play, notwithstanding Sam Robson’s 75, his first half-century since the third day of the Trent Bridge Test in July, Middlesex have made 202 for 4, giving them a lead of 114. The game remains afoot.Eoin Morgan is 41 not out and Neil Dexter, having taken 50 balls to get off the mark with a boundary is unbeaten on 4. We will therefore go into the last day of the season with the final issue of the 2014 season still to be decided. The last threads of the tapestry remain unstitched.Yet whichever of these two teams joins Northamptonshire in Division Two next April, no one present at Old Trafford this dull Thursday morning will forget that the tension they felt and shared with their fellows as they watched some of the most riveting county cricket of the season.Beginning the day on 259 for 6, Lancastrian hopes were raised by two boundaries, a drive by Luke Procter and a biff over midwicket by Chapple. Yet it was Tim Murtagh who struck the most significant blows when he had both Procter and Kerrigan lbw in the space of four balls, the first of these achieved with a ball which pitched outside leg stump. But such things happen during the course of a season. It is often the teams which get over them who prevail and prosper.Chapple was joined by Tom Bailey, a 23-year-old playing his fourth first-class game. Bailey was just one year old when Lancashire’s captain made his debut but the young lad immediately showed that he was overawed neither by his partner nor the situation. He got off the mark with a two; then there was an edged four and a push for three. Singles followed but Middlesex’s bowlers kept to their work and stifled the run rate. Safety beckoned them. There was a scurried single, then block, block, play and miss. Silence on the ground. Journalists were unable to type their updates. Experienced ex-cricketers said how wonderful all this was and then found themselves almost unable to watch the play. At least Chapple and Bailey had the comfort of involvement, as did eleven Middlesex cricketers who have scrapped like hell these three days.We got to that 110th over. Roland-Jones v Chapple. To paraphrase Sid Waddell: Maxine Peake is playing Hamlet at the Royal Exchange but she won’t beat that for drama. The cricket that followed Lancashire’s innings had a different tempo to it – thank God for that, thought the paramedics perhaps – but it was no less involving. Lancashire managed to drop Rogers twice before lunch but the Australian opener has looked a little less secure than usual in this match.Perhaps he was remembering his decision to bat first on Tuesday morning. In any event, it was no huge surprise when, having made 21 in 93 minutes, he edged a cramped cut onto his stumps to give Bailey another reason to remember his day. But Middlesex were then 78 for 1 and the deficit was a mere 10 runs.At the other end Robson was batting with increasing confidence, as if he was relearning skills that had temporarily deserted him. Slow left-armer Kerrigan, by contrast, was still searching for his best rhythm; indeed, he has spent most of the summer engaged in this quest. Maidens were rare and the spinner was not applying pressure as he did in his golden-gleaming early seasons.Yet Kerrigan has never wanted for flinty courage. There was some loop, some spin. Robson had hit ten boundaries in 105 balls when he received a short delivery from the spinner and slapped it straight to short extra cover where sub fielder Liam Livingstone took a good catch above his head. A mere 18 runs later Kerrigan had a second wicket when Joe Denly tried to take his bat away from a good ball but only gloved a catch to Paul Horton at slip. Middlesex took tea on 141 for 3, a lead of 53.The last session was the quietest of the day. Junaid Khan produced a brute of a delivery to have Dawid Malan caught at slip by Steven Croft for a patient 39 and Lancashire would have slept a little better had Horton not spilled a slip catch off Dexter when the Middlesex man had yet to play his single scoring shot. The light closed in and the umpires fussed about it. The players came off with eight overs to be bowled. There is one more day left in this game and only the brave or foolish would predict its shape.
