Somerset enjoyed the better of the exchanges on a rain-shortened second day of their LV= County Championship match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The visitors picked up six wickets in the 44 overs of play that were possible, reducing the home county to 195 for 8, still 117 runs adrift.Heavy overnight and morning rain prevented any play before 3.25pm but under improving skies, and with a drying breeze, the home side resumed their first innings from 57 for 2, with Brendan Taylor and James Taylor at the crease together.Lewis Gregory soon parted them, earning his side a first bowling point as he trapped Brendan Taylor in his crease for 22, the third lbw decision of the innings. Riki Wessels only made 8 before nicking an away-swinger from Jim Allenby into the clutches of Marcus Trescothick at second slip. The situation might have been even worse for Nottinghamshire but for a great show of sportsmanship from Alex Barrow, Somerset’s wicketkeeper, who dived to gather a leg side nick from James Taylor from the bowling of Tim Groenewald.Umpire Tim Robinson, at the bowler’s end, raised the finger as Somerset appealed loudly but after a period of consultation it appeared that Barrow acknowledged that he hadn’t taken it cleanly and the batsman was allowed to remain.A round of applause broke out for Barrow’s actions but Taylor couldn’t capitalise, bowled shortly afterwards by Groenewald for 45.”I don’t think it’s anything to be talking to the media about. If you don’t think it’s out, you don’t think it’s out and that’s that,” Barrow said. “It’s nothing to write home about. I don’t think you should cheat and I find it weird that I’m applauded for it – if it’s not out, it’s not out”Taylor said: “I hit the ball and was caught down the leg side and fortunately the keeper dropped it, although the umpire thought he’d caught it. It was very good from the keeper – he acknowledged what he’d done. I thought he’d caught, so I was on the walk off but he was honest enough to say he’d dropped it, which was good of him.”Craig Overton followed up his first day heroics with the bat, where he scored 55 from 31 deliveries, by taking the final three wickets of the day.The big fast bowler showed remarkable athleticism to cling on to sharp caught and bowled offerings to send back both Chris Read and Luke Wood. In between, he uprooted Vernon Philander’s middle stump to walk off with figures of 3 for 27 to his credit.Samit Patel survived until the close, with 35 to his name, with Nottinghamshire still five runs short of securing their first batting point.

USA players join Barbados Tridents training camp

Five USA national team players have joined the Barbados Tridents training camp this week as part of their own preparation ahead of the 2016 World Twenty20 Qualifier in Ireland next month

Five USA national team players have joined the Barbados Tridents training camp this week as part of their own preparation ahead of the 2016 World Twenty20 Qualifier in Ireland next month.Wicketkeeper Steven Taylor had previously been offered a trial with Tridents to compete for a development contract as part of an opportunity facilitated for him, four Canada players and a Bermuda player through the ICC Americas office.Apart from Taylor though, four other USA players including Japen Patel, Adil Bhatti, Jasdeep Singh and T20 captain Muhammad Ghous travelled to Barbados at their own expense to train with the Tridents after receiving an invitation from their coach Robin Singh, who has worked with USA national teams on a contract basis since 2011. In addition to the national team players, local Washington Cricket League player Mohammad Kamran has also travelled to Barbados. According to sources, Washington Cricket League president and former USA team manager Shoaib Ahmed helped facilitate the opportunity for all of the players through Robin. The USACA had announced a pre-World T20 training camp in Jamaica from June 19 to 21, but five USA players will be in Barbados from June 15 to 22 after receiving indications that yet another USACA organised camp for Jamaica had fallen through. Patel said on Monday from Barbados that the players were contacted only a week ago for the offer of going to Barbados, but quickly rearranged plans and secured sponsors to pay for their individual flights and hotel costs in order to make the trip possible. He hopes it will provide them with the intense preparation they need to do well in Ireland.”The main thing I want to get out of this is fitness,” Patel told ESPNcricinfo. “I want to make sure that I’m match-fit since we haven’t been playing any cricket on turf. So I’m just looking to get more turf practice and getting in the groove of playing a lot of cricket since we’re expected to perform in back-to-back games in Ireland. This camp will help get us back in the mindset of thinking about cricket everyday instead of being weekend cricketers.”Patel said his initial expectations were that the USA players were only going to observe the Tridents training sessions and then at the conclusion would have their own separate sessions with Robin. However, he says he was thrilled that the Tridents team management has fully integrated all of the USA players into their daily routine.”I like the fact that we are actually involved with their day-to-day camp activities and their programs in addition to the training,” Patel said. “It has been good so far because all of the senior players are treating us like we are part of the camp. Every time they see something they come up to us and tell us how to fix it and how to go about things. The first day was a really good experience. Guys like [Kieron] Pollard, Dwayne Smith, Ravi Rampaul and everyone else there has been very helpful. They are treating us like they are our mentors. We are willing to learn and they are willing to offer.”In the USA, yes we practice but we don’t practice the right way. Over here, they are on point. Whatever they are going to focus on in the match, that’s what they practice. So for bowlers, they focus more on bowling yorkers or whatever their role is in the match whereas back in the USA, you just come in and bowl normally. Here it is a higher level and you are facing batsmen with higher skills. When I bowl to someone like Pollard, I have to think about where he is trying to hit and my job is to think about what ball I want to try to bowl without him hitting me. So that level of thinking can only happen when you bowl to somebody with that skillset.”USA open their World T20 Qualifier campaign on July 10 against Nepal in Belfast. Nepal have been having extended preparation in India after their home facilities were damaged following a major earthquake on April 25. In the past, USA have been undone by lack of preparation rather than lack of talent but Patel believes this experience in Barbados may give the handful of USA players a much-needed lift to lay the platform for success in the qualifiers.”For me this is a very good confidence-booster because this was a camp where when I first came in I expected to see how far away I am from playing at that level,” he said. “After coming here and hearing the feedback, I think it just requires a little bit of hard work so I’m willing to put that in and hopefully I’m able to turn that into performances in Ireland. There’s a few adjustments in T20 which I am expecting to get out of this. How to approach and build my innings, bowling wise how to read a batsman. Those are the things I’m looking to learn rather than any technical work. So far it’s been more than what I expected.”

O principal alvo do clube do Parque São Jorge é Tiago Nunes, técnico do Athletico-PR.

Chris Read helped himself to a second century of the season as Nottinghamshire dominated day three against Middlesex at Trent Bridge. Having passed three figures for the first time this summer in the four-day game between the sides at Lord’s back in April, the Notts captain was at it again, this time on home soil.Having been dropped on 54, Read, the 36-year-old former England wicketkeeper, went on to score 108 from 206 balls as Notts built a useful first innings lead.Resuming on their overnight score of 180 for 4, Notts found themselves in a spot of trouble when Samit Patel was bowled, in the third over of the day, at 184 for 5 and Steven Mullaney holed out to Tim Murtagh off Ollie Rayner 45 runs later. At that stage, they still trailed Middlesex by 145. But despite losing 15 overs to rain, Notts pushed on after lunch with Read and Brett Hutton adding 157 for the seventh wicket.Read, who missed six weeks of the season from the middle of May due to a hamstring injury, struck eight fours in reaching his half century, off 101 balls, and posted three figures for the first time since mid-April, off 190 balls. Having been dropped at slip by Ollie Rayner on 54 – a sharp chance to Rayner’s right hand – he eventually fell to Toby Roland-Jones, at 386 for 7.The captain’s job was made all the more easy by Hutton, who batted beautifully to post his highest first class score of 72. The 22-year-old bowling allrounder brought up his own half-century off 121 balls, with seven fours, and looked comfortable throughout against a Middlesex attack that offered precious little as the day wore on.Hutton continued to bat with due care and attention after his skipper’s departure and with Luke Wood, who was dropped on 0 off the bowling of Dawid Malan, he added 25 for the eighth wicket. But he finally departed at 419 for 9 and at that juncture Notts declared with a first innings lead of 45. Middlesex opener Sam Robson and nightwatchman James Harris successfully negotiated the final two overs of the evening and trail Notts by 38 runs with all 10 second innings wickets in hand.

I still want to play Test cricket – Chanderpaul

Shivnarine Chanderpaul has said he still wants to play Test cricket, ruling out retirement at least until the end of 2015

West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul has said he still wants to play Test cricket and that he is unlikely to retire until at least the end of 2015.”Definitely, but I am on the outside just waiting to see what is happening,” Chanderpaul told when asked if he wanted to play Tests again. “Retirement isn’t on the cards at the moment. Not for now, probably the ending of the year maybe then.”Chanderpaul needs 87 runs to overtake Brian Lara as the leading Test run-getter from the Carribean but said he wasn’t overly concerned about the record. “Well I am not thinking too much about that,” Chanderpaul, who is playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors in the CPL, said. “You can’t have all these things at the back of your mind but if it happens it happens, but if it doesn’t it doesn’t.”Chanderpaul, 40, was dropped for the two-Test series against Australia in June after managing only 92 runs at an average of 15.33 in the three Tests against England in April and May. Chanderpaul had six single-digit scores and only one fifty in his last 10 innings. His axing from the West Indies squad polarised opinions, with Lara saying his former team-mate deserved a farewell series, even as Michael Holding felt Chanderpaul wasn’t good enough to hold down a place in the West Indies team any longer.West Indies suffered huge defeats in both the Tests against Australia, going down in the first by nine wickets and in the second by 277 runs.

Australia claim No. 1, McCullum exits

A fighting half-century, and a more inventive and flamboyant one by Steven Smith made sure Australia reached the No. 1 Test ranking without drama

The Report by Daniel Brettig24-Feb-2016
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details1:22

Farrell: No fairy tale ending for McCullum

At once a benediction and a coronation, Brendon McCullum’s final moments as a Test cricketer marked Australia’s ascendancy to the world No. 1 Test ranking after a resilient and relentless performance by Steven Smith’s men.It was Smith at the other end as Adam Voges stroked the winning runs through cover after key contributions from Joe Burns and Usman Khawaja. A target of 201 was never enough for New Zealand to defend against an Australian batting line-up that has carried much before them since the harsh lessons of England last year.Since the nadir of Trent Bridge, Australia have won seven of nine Tests without once tasting defeat, enough to hand them the ICC Mace as the world’s top team and a $1 million prize. This was the first time Australia reached No. 1 since 2014, but the difference now was a far younger team aware there was still much more to do: namely to succeed in Asia, against Sri Lanka and India over the coming 15 months.Befitting their enduring loyalty to McCullum, New Zealand’s effort was never less than wholehearted. This was epitomised by Neil Wagner’s continued bouncer assault on the tourists, despite carrying what had been revealed to be a broken left hand from a Burns shot that burst through his fingers on the fourth evening.Even so, it was occasionally puzzling to see New Zealand not really trying to generate pressure through disciplined lines and reverse swing, which Matt Henry in particular was able to find. Smith relished the challenge of matching McCullum’s outlandish field settings with creativity of his own.Khawaja had a fortunate escape in the second over of the morning, edging Trent Boult precisely between the wicketkeeper and a wide sole slip. Thereon he accumulated his runs in calm style.Batting was more of a struggle for Burns, who was struck one glancing blow on the helmet by Wagner and others on the body. He took 35 minutes of play to add to his overnight score, but refused to be flustered and eventually went to a deserved fifty.Tim Southee’s entry to the attack brought another Khawaja edge, this time held smartly by McCullum above his head. Smith arrived to one last display of lateral captaincy from New Zealand’s retiring leader, a packed leg side field and another short-ball attack.Having been hit hard by a bouncer in the first innings, Smith resolved to attack, and boldly hooked his first short ball from Wagner over the head of the man at fine leg. He used the full width of the crease to open up other scoring zones, and was soon bringing the target well within reach. After speaking with the umpires, Smith took the opportunity for an extra 15 minutes to try to seal the game without breaking for lunch. Burns rose to the challenge with a pair of boundaries before being bowled by Boult when going for a third, leaving Smith to concede the job could not be done before the interval. The remaining 16 runs were duly polished off in early afternoon, Voges finishing off the match with a princely cover drive. Australian celebrations were of the reserved variety: partly out of deference for McCullum, but also in acknowledgement of the fact that getting to the top is one thing, staying there quite another.
