Harry Finch resists for Kent to thwart his former county Sussex

Gutsy century digs out dramatic draw for much-changed Kent team at Canterbury

ECB Reporters' Network14-Jul-2021Sussex 181 and 332 for 4 dec (Orr 119, Haines 94, Head 49*) drew with Kent 165 (Podmore 37, Atkins 5-51) and 257 for 7 (Finch 115*, O’Riordan 47)Kent clung on for a draw in their LV= Insurance County Championship match with Sussex, after an engrossing final day at Canterbury.Jack Carson took 3 for 87 and Sean Hunt 2 for 48, but despite a cluster of wickets in the final hour, Sussex were unable to polish off Kent’s tail.Hastings-born Harry Finch made 115 from 212 balls against his home county as Kent closed on 257 for 7, after Sussex had declared on 332 for 4, 40 minutes into the morning session. The visitors began day four on 277 for 3, and Matt Quinn, who finished with 3 for 118, took the only wicket to fall when he had Oliver Carter caught by Marcus O’Riordan for 18.Travis Head reached 49 not out when the visitors declared, setting Kent a target of 349 to win. The hosts’ reply got off to a desperate start when Ollie Robinson had Joe Gordon caught behind for a duck in the first over, but O’Riordan and Finch batted through to lunch, with Kent on 52 for 1.Related

O’Riordan was dropped three times before he was finally run out in bizarre circumstances for 47. Chasing a single, he nearly ran into his batting partner Finch. As he veered sideways to avoid a collision, the ball was gathered by Tom Haines, who ran him out with a direct hit.Heino Kuhn faced 27 balls before he was bowled by Carson for 4, leaving Kent on 139 for 3 at tea. Finch reached three figures with a glance off Carson that just eluded leg slip before nestling against the rope, but Kent’s outside hopes of a win dimmed when Dan Lincoln was out for 41, caught by Robinson off Carson.Conversely, Sussex’s hopes surged when Carson then had Harry Houillon caught by Danial Ibrahim for 9.Hunt had Finch caught behind and when he subsequently trapped Hamid Qadri lbw for 4 there were still five overs remaining, but Harry Podmore and debutant Bailey Whiteman survived a tense final spell to finish not out on 36 and 0 respectively. The result means Sussex finish bottom of Group C while Kent are fifth, leaving both sides in the third tier when the championship resumes in late August.

David Miller, Tabraiz Shamsi give South Africa T20I series with 2-0 lead

David Miller’s 75 off 44 saved the visitors from 58 for 5

Firdose Moonda22-Jul-2021South Africa have won successive T20I series, and the second in seven rubbers in the format under Mark Boucher, with a game to spare and under severe pressure. South Africa recovered from 58 for 5 at the halfway stage of their innings to post a more-than-respectable 159, thanks to David Miller and Wiaan Mulder.Miller’s spectacular 44-ball 75 was largely responsible for South Africa scoring 101 runs off the last 10 overs and 68 in the last five to ruin an Irish display that started off miserly. Josh Little’s economy rate shot up after his first spell of 1 for 14 in two overs to 1 for 42 at the end while Mark Adair’s more than doubled from 1 for 8 in his first two overs to 2 for 33 in his final analysis.

Bavuma pulled up for ‘audible obscenity’ in first T20I

Temba Bavuma has been reprimanded for the “use of an audible obscenity” during the first T20I against Ireland, played on Monday.

The Level 1 breach of the ICC’s code of conduct came when the South Africa captain was given out caught behind off Simi Singh for a run-a-ball 13 after opening the innings.

Bavuma received an official reprimand for his act, and had one demerit point added to his disciplinary record (it was his first offence in a 24-month period).

Only Mulder and Aiden Markram suffered similarly expensive fates as South Africa defended their total albeit with a new look attack. With Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje rested, Lungi Ngidi was the pace spearhead, assisted by left-arm quick Beuran Hendricks, who made his first appearance in the series. While Ngidi and Bjorn Fortuin held their ends, Hendricks made key incisions but it was the world’s top-ranked T20I bowler who stole the show.Tabraiz Shamsi finished with 3 for 14 to pull six clear on the leading wicket-takers’ list in 2021 and was responsible for dismissals of Ireland’s big players, Paul Stirling, George Dockrell and Shane Getkate. Ireland will be disappointed with their batting effort, though. No Irish batter made more than 24 and no partnership was worth more than 31.Getting their ducks in a row
South Africa endured their worst start in a T20I after they lost their first two wickets in four balls without a run on the board. Temba Bavuma and Janneman Malan were dismissed in identical fashion, playing away from the body and edging to short third man. Little was the man in place and took the first catch low down and the second at shoulder height to dismiss both batters for ducks and add to the many firsts South Africa have already had on this tour. Not only did they lose to Ireland for the first time in an ODI and play them for the first time in a T20I, but they have also now lost two wickets without scoring a run for the first time in a T20I.It’s Miller-Mulder time
While there is still much work for South Africa’s middle order to do, their finishers played their part after coming together at the end of the 10th over, with the score on 58 for 5. Miller and Mulder put on 58 for the sixth wicket, in 43 balls. They started out watchfully with boundary-less overs off Stirling and Little, and Miller should have been out for 19 when he was dropped by wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker. Miller then pulled Simi Singh through deep midwicket for four before Mulder hit him for six over deep midwicket to bowl his exceptional figures. The pair scored a combined 25 runs off the 16th and 17th overs and were well set to end the innings strongly. Mulder didn’t last to the end and was caught at long-on off the first ball of the 18th over but Miller went on to his third 50-plus score batting at No. 6 or lower. He single-handedly scored 32 out of the 36 runs off the last two overs, including five sixes and three in succession of the last three balls that came off Little.0 is still for O’Brien
Things are not getting better for Kevin O’Brien who collected his second duck of the series and third successive in international cricket. On the evidence of his dismissals, O’Brien seems to be struggling with his timing on the drive as he was bowled by Fred Klaasen playing away from his body in an ODI against Netherlands last month, then chipped a ball that moved a touch late back to Kagiso Rabada in the first T20I and then attempted to drive an overpitched Fortuin ball in this match but gave the left-arm spinner a simple return catch. Ireland were 1 for 1 after one over and may need to look at other options in the top two.Drop, drop, catch (again)
South Africa have made a habit of putting down chances in Ireland and, as was the case in the first T20I, they dropped two before they started holding on. Andy Balbirnie was let off in the second over when he steered Ngidi to Fortuin at short third man. The ball hit him in the chest area and he could not clasp it. Five overs later, Dockrell should have been Hendricks’ second wicket when he drove to mid-on where Aiden Markram dived to his left and tumbled, without the ball. But that’s where the fumbles stopped. Shamsi had Stirling caught by Miller at deep midwicket before Fortuin made up for his blunder and held on to a low chance, diving forward at cover, to dismiss Tector, and Markram also redeemed himself with a well-judged catch on the long-on rope to end Dockrell’s knock.

Chennai Super Kings one win away from IPL playoffs

Sunrisers Hyderabad will be out of top-four contention if they lose on Thursday

#PoliteEnquiries: Did Sunrisers not like Warner’s dance moves?

Big picture

This Chennai Super Kings side – which is one win away from a spot in the playoffs – functions at a very high level because of a stable first XI with clear role definitions.Faf du Plessis is the aggressor. And while he takes care of the run-rate, Ruturaj Gaikwad can simply play to his best tempo.Moeen Ali and Ambati Rayudu are perfect as No. 3 and 4 because of their natural ability to attack spin bowling. It is thanks to their efforts that Super Kings have been the quickest scoring team (9.05) in the middle overs (7-16) this season.

IPL 2021 is available in the US on ESPN+. You can subscribe to ESPN+ and tune in to Thursday’s match here.

Then comes Ravindra Jadeja, whose batting and finishing ability has shot through the roof, so much so that he is basically carrying MS Dhoni, which is fair enough since MS Dhoni has carried this team for years.There. That’s the plan. And it never changes.Sunrisers Hyderabad on the other hand began the season with a captain whom they no longer want in the XI, their middle order is so brittle it limits the way their top order plays and a lack of a recognised finisher means there is always a chance of things going wrong at the exact time you want everything to go right – the death overs. This disarray is the reason why they are dead last on the points table. A loss tomorrow will eliminate them from playoff contention.

In the news

It looks like David Warner’s time with the Sunrisers is coming to an end. He wasn’t even at the ground for the last game they played and then went on to suggest on social media that this may be the new status quo. Head coach Trevor Bayliss did nothing to quash that suggestion, instead saying they wanted their younger players to experience what it is like to be at the ground, in the midst of all the action.Ruturaj Gaikwad has developed his game so much he’s almost like a new signing for Chennai Super Kings•BCCI/IPL

Likely XIs

Sunrisers Hyderabad: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Wriddhiman Saha (wk), 3 Kane Williamson (capt), 4 Priyam Garg, 5 Abhishek Sharma, 6 Jason Holder, 7 Abdul Samad, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Siddharth Kaul, 11 Sandeep SharmaChennai Super Kings: 1 Faf du Plessis, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Moeen Ali, 4 Ambati Rayudu, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Sam Curran/Dwayne Bravo, 9 Shardul Thakur, 10 Deepak Chahar, 11 Josh Hazlewood/Imran Tahir

Strategy punt

  • If there is one team against whom Dhoni can finish the way he used to, it is Sunrisers. He is destructive against their death bowlers, taking 81 runs off 46 balls from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and 45 off 25 from Siddharth Kaul. But this plan only works if – and it’s a big if – CSK can prevent their from facing Rashid Khan because that head-to-head ain’t pretty: 23 runs in 32 balls, one dismissal.
  • Kane Williamson loves playing against Super Kings. Check out how his stats against all their best bowlers: 50 runs off 29 balls against Dwayne Bravo; once dismissed, 49 off 35 against Jadeja; never dismissed, 57 off 38 against Shardul Thakur; twice dismissed and 58 off 44 against Deepak Chahar; never dismissed. Williamson batting through the innings could once again prove crucial to Sunrisers’ chances.

Stats that matter

  • Last IPL, over the course of 12 matches, the average first-innings score in Sharjah was 178. But this season, thanks to a relaid pitch that is a lot slower and a lot less conducive for shot-making, the average first-innings score is only 136.
  • A measure of how incredible Jadeja has been with the bat in recent seasons. Since IPL 2020, he is one of only three players to score at least 400 runs and average over 50. The others are KL Rahul and Williamson.
  • Rashid finds life a bit tougher than usual playing against the Super Kings. He averages 27.6 – his worst out of all teams – and gives up a boundary almost every over (33 in 36) – again his worst out of all teams.

Mohammad Rizwan signs Sussex contract for County Championship, T20 Blast

Pakistan wicketkeeper will be available from April until mid-July

Matt Roller16-Dec-2021Mohammad Rizwan will play county cricket for the first time in 2022 after signing a deal to play for Sussex between April and mid-July.Rizwan will arrive in England after the conclusion of Australia’s tour to Pakistan on April 5 and will be available for the majority of the County Championship season and the whole of the T20 Blast. He will open the batting alongside Luke Wright in the Blast, replacing Phil Salt – who has left for Lancashire – as a top-order keeper/batter, and is a replacement for Ben Brown in the Championship side following his request to be released from his contract two years early.Rizwan is the fourth Pakistan international to sign for a county for 2022 after Shan Masood (Derbyshire), Zafar Gohar (Gloucestershire) and Shaheen Shah Afridi (Middlesex) and with a relatively clear window in their international schedule in the first half of the season, it would be no surprise if more players were to follow.Related

Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s Championship and 50-over head coach, said that his former county team-mates Mushtaq Ahmed and Saqlain Mushtaq had provided character references for Rizwan which suggested he would be “a wonderful addition to our dressing room”.”I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really disappointed to learn we’d be losing a player of Ben Brown’s quality,” Salisbury said. “Now that has happened, though, we have to look forward and I’m delighted that we’ve been able to act quickly over the last week or so to secure the services of one of the world’s best keeper-batters as a replacement.”Mohammad’s first-class and Test records speak for themselves and it’s a huge coup to welcome him to Sussex for a big chunk of next season’s Championship. He and Travis [Head] are exactly the kind of experienced, international cricketers that our emerging lads can learn a huge amount from.”Sussex won the wooden spoon in last year’s County Championship, finishing bottom of Division Three with a young team. As well as Rizwan, they have signed Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Steven Finn this winter and Travis Head is due to return as captain – and the club’s other Championship overseas player – despite struggling in his first season at Hove.James Kirtley, Sussex’s T20 coach, described Rizwan as “one of the most exciting cricketers in the world” and said that he was “an excellent replacement” following Salt’s departure. “I am extremely pleased to be filling that gap with an international player of his calibre,” he said.
“He is a natural leader and a player who will inspire. I am very much looking forward to welcoming him to Sussex as the latest in a long line of successful cricketers that have played for Pakistan and Sussex.”

Virat Kohli steps down as India Test captain

“Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now”

Vishal Dikshit15-Jan-2022Virat Kohli has stepped down as captain of India’s Test team, with immediate effect, a day after losing the Test series to South Africa 2-1 with a seven-wicket loss in Cape Town.He took over as full-time Test captain in early 2015, when MS Dhoni had announced retirement in Australia, and ended up as India’s most successful Test captain ever.Related

  • Rohit, Rahul or Pant – who will replace Kohli as India's next Test captain?

Kohli’s sudden announcement on Twitter comes on the back of a series of public exchanges between him and the BCCI, which started with his T20I resignation before the 2021 World Cup. In early December, the BCCI then stripped Kohli of the ODI captaincy, naming Rohit Sharma the new white-ball leader. A day later, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that he had asked Kohli not to step down as T20I captain, but Kohli soon contradicted Ganguly, saying his decision to step down was “received well”, termed as “progressive” by the BCCI top brass, and that he “wasn’t told to reconsider” his decision. Kohli also expressed his disappointment in the same press conference, saying he had been told about his removal as ODI captain just 90 minutes before the selection meeting to pick the Test squad for South Africa, and “there was no prior communication to me at all”.Most wins as Test captain: Virat Kohli tops the list for India•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The controversy stretched further when chief selector Chetan Sharma – while announcing the ODI squad for the South Africa tour on December 31 – said “everyone who was present in the meeting” asked Kohli to reconsider his decision when he stepped down as T20I captain. In his tweet, Kohli said: “It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test captain of India, it’s now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 per cent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team.

“I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the team-mates who bought into the vision I had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation. You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi [Shastri] and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian cricket forward.”The BCCI, which tweeted a statement congratulating Kohli for his “admirable leadership qualities”, has not indicated when it will name his replacement. Rohit had been appointed full-time vice-captain ahead of the South Africa Tests, but a hamstring injury on the eve of the team’s departure meant he could not make the trip and the selectors then appointed KL Rahul as Kohli’s deputy. Rahul also stood in as captain in the second Test, in Johannesburg, after Kohli pulled out due to back spasms.Kohli’s stint as Test captain was largely successful, as he oversaw the team’s rise to No.1 in the ICC rankings and several memorable overseas victories. In 2021, he led India to the final of the inaugural World Test Championship in Southampton. Overall, he steps down with the fourth-most wins as captain in Test cricket, with 40 wins from 68 games. Of the other 28, 11 were draws and 17 were losses.Kohli as India captain across formats•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Going by numbers, he was India’s best captain by a distance. Dhoni (27 wins from 60 matches) and Ganguly (21 wins out of 49) are next on the list.Of his 40 wins, 16 came overseas, including series victories in Sri Lanka (2-1) in 2015, West Indies (2-0) in 2016, Sri Lanka (3-0) in 2017, Australia (2-1) in 2018-19 and West Indies (2-0) in 2019. Under Kohli, after the WTC final, India also led what was originally a five-match series in England 2-1, before the fifth Test was called off because of Covid-19 fears in the Indian contingent.Kohli is also lauded for his fitness-oriented approach to the game, and will be remembered for using the five-bowler strategy consistently in Test cricket.Kohli’s tenure will also be remembered for a number of controversies, including a fall-out with then coach Anil Kumble in 2017, crossing swords with Steven Smith over DRS protocols when Kohli stopped short of labelling the then Australia captain a cheat, the recent face-off with the BCCI, and even more recently India’s outburst against the host broadcaster during the Test series in South Africa.

On the batting front, Kohli’s recent lack of a hundred has been in the spotlight – he has not struck one since November 2019, when he made 136 against Bangladesh in Kolkata. He has scored 760 runs at an average of 28.14 since then, with six half-centuries. In the just-concluded Cape Town Test, his last as captain, he batted with exemplary discipline to score 79 off 273 balls and 29 off 193.India’s next Test assignment is a two-match series against Sri Lanka at home in February-March, when Kohli is expected to play his 100th Test. The BCCI and selectors are likely to announce his successor as captain at the time of the squad selection.

Sri Lanka stun Australia after Wellalage heroics

Pakistan’s Haseebullah Khan’s 135 downs Zimbabwe; hosts West Indies open account

Sreshth Shah18-Jan-2022A devastating opening spell from West Indies fast bowler Shiva Sankar rattled Scotland so bad that they could never recover. Scotland were bowled out for 95 and West Indies chased the target down in less than 20 overs to earn their first points in their home U-19 World Cup.Sankar got the new ball to swing away from right-handers, and his first scalp was Scotland opener Charlie Tear after he smacked one straight to mid off. Sankar then went full on middle stump to No. 3 Samuel Elstone, and he missed the flick and was out lbw. The third wicket for Sankar, though, was his best ball – an outswinger enticing No. 4 Tomas Mackintosh to drive, only for him to edge it to the slip cordon. The score of 29 for 3 was soon 57 for 5 when left-arm spinner Anderson Mahase picked off the next two batters. No. 5 Jack Jarvis pulled a short ball to Sankar at midwicket and the No. 6 Muhaymen Majeed missed a flick after charging down the track, leaving the wicketkeeper to complete a straightforward stumping. With the lower order exposed at one end, the rest of West Indies’ bowling unit went for the kill. McKenny Clarke’s extra pace induced an edge off Rafay Khan, after which the tall right-arm offspinner Onaje Amory used his height to get turn and bounce and find the outside edges of Lyle Robertson and Scotland captain Charlie Peet. The tenth wicket, however, was of Scotland’s best batter Oliver Davidson. Having opened the batting and seen all the wickets tumble around him, he had to show restraint through his innings. He trundled along to 43 in 92 balls before being the last man out in anticlimactic fashion, run out while looking for a two. It was a terrific performance on the field led by stand-in captain Giovonte Depeiza, who was leading the side in Ackeem Auguste’s absence.West Indies opener Matthew Nandu was tentative in their chase of 96, more so after his first-ball duck against Australia in the tournament opener. The other opener Shaqkere Parris, though, was more enterprising with his shot making. Together they put on 37 for the first wicket.Parris entertained with three fours and a six, but he seemed to get bogged down by Peet’s unorthodox round-arm left-arm spinning deliveries that seemed to dart into the stumps. Parris missed a Leet delivery that went straight with the arm, and he was walking back for 26 in 29 balls after his leg stump was rattled. The other left-arm spinner Oliver Davidson soon removed Rivaldo Clarke after his cut took the edge to the keeper, but that was about all the success Scotland had. West Indies did not lose a wicket from 66 for 3 onwards, and the unbeaten batters Teddy Bishop (23*) and Johnson (14*) saw the game off without any fuss.Dunith Wellalage turned in key performances with bat and ball•Getty Images

In the other Group D match, Sri Lanka captain Dunith Wellalage produced a dominating all-round show against Australia to throw the group wide open with one round of matches left.Wellalage – the batting allrounder who also bowls left-arm spin – first ran through the Australia batting with a five-for to bowl them out for 175. And when Sri Lanka were 49 for 4 in their chase, he smacked 52 to set up their win.Although Wellalage top-scored in the chase, he was ably assisted from the No. 6 and No. 7 batters who came after him. Wicketkeeper Anjala Bandara made 33 in a 70-run fifth-wicket stand with Wellalage. And after that, Wellalage added a further 52 with Ranuda Somarathne. After Wellalage fell, Somarathne saw the chase off to finish unbeaten on 32.Australia’s only bright spot was their opener Campbell Kellaway, who made 54. Wellalage, who introduced himself as the sixth bowler, made the most damage through the middle overs. After removing Kellaway in the 29th over, he rattled the stumps twice in the 31st to dismiss Nivethan Radhakrishnan (21) and Tobias Snell. Those three wickets in quick time saw Australia fall from 107 for 3 to 112 for 6, and if it wasn’t for William Salzmann’s 22, they would’ve folded for much lesser.Sri Lanka’s win sets Group D up for a grandstand finish. The winner of the Sri Lanka-West Indies clash in the last round definitely progresses to the Super League stage. But the loser of that game can also go through if Australia don’t win by a big enough margin against Scotland in their last match.Haseebullah’s century is the tournament’s highest individual score so far•ICC via Getty Images

Over in Group C, Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Haseebullah Khan hammered 135 to lift Pakistan to 315 for 9, a total 115 runs too much for Zimbabwe in their game at Diego Martin.Haseebullah put on a 189-run third-wicket stand with the No. 4 Irfan Khan, who made 75 in 73 balls. After that, the rest of Pakistan’s batters smacked quick-fire cameos to give Zimbabwe an uphill chase. The 16-year-old Awais Ali then picked up three late wickets in the second innings to finish with 6 for 56, the tournament’s best figures so far.Haseebullah, the opener, hammered ten fours and four sixes in his 155-ball innings while Irfan crunched six fours and one six. Their third-wicket stand was broken by right-arm seamer Alex Falao when Irfan fell in the 45th over, but that did not plug the flow of runs.Qasim Akram, the Pakistan captain, scored an 11-ball 20, Abbas Ali made 13 in six balls and the No. 9 Zeeshan Zamar hit three sixes in his six-ball 21 to take Pakistan to 315. Falao picked up another four wickets after Irfan’s dismissal to finish with 5 for 58.Pakistan’s opening bowlers, Zeeshan Zameer and Ahmed Khan, together with first-change bowler Awais pegged Zimbabwe back early with their breakthroughs. On the back of their effort, Pakistan had reduced Zimbabwe to 82 for 6 which soon was 111 for 7.But Brian Bennett went on to hit a 92-ball 82 to get Zimbabwe as close to the target as he could. He did the bulk of the scoring in a 73-run eighth-wicket stand with Tendekai Mataranyika to take Zimbabwe to 200. But Awais returned to clean both of them up, and also the final wicket, to finish with a six-for. Despite Zimbabwe’s late rally to protect their net run rate, they still fell short by 115.

Rahul Dravid on Wriddhiman Saha – 'Not hurt at all, have deep respect for him'

“The easiest thing for me is to not have these conversations but that’s not who I am,” says India coach

Shashank Kishore20-Feb-2022Wriddhiman Saha “deserved honesty and clarity”, and Rahul Dravid’s chat about him potentially not being picked in India’s Test team going forward came from a “deep respect for Saha and his achievements and contributions to Indian cricket”, the head coach has explained. On Sunday, Saha told ESPNcricinfo that Dravid had indicated to him the team management’s inclination to groom a younger wicketkeeper as Rishabh Pant’s understudy following the South Africa tour, and that he could “take some other decision” if he wanted.Moments after India’s 3-0 series win over West Indies, Dravid was asked about the selection call and how he felt about a private conversation being played out the way it has, in public.”I’m not hurt at all,” Dravid said. “I have a deep respect for Wriddhiman Saha and his achievements and contributions to Indian cricket. My conversation with him actually came from that place, from my respect for him. He deserved honesty and clarity. I didn’t want him to hear about it from the media.”These are conversations I constantly have with players. I’m not hurt about it at all because I don’t expect players to always like all the messages or agree with everything I have to say about them. That’s not how it works. When you have difficult conversations with people – sometimes you have to have them with players – you don’t always expect them to agree with you or like you, but that doesn’t mean you brush it under the carpet and don’t have the conversations.”Related

Dravid elaborated on how he and Rohit Sharma, who has now been elevated to all-format captaincy, have ensured players are constantly being spoken to about their roles, and how those not in the XI are given reasons for their exclusion.”Before every playing XI is picked, even now, either me or Rohit will speak to the guys not playing and are open to answer questions on why they are not playing and what are the reasons a particular XI might play,” Dravid said. “It’s natural for players at times to get upset and feel hurt, but I just feel that because of the respect I have for them, my team deserved clarity and honesty, and that’s all I was trying to convey.”Saha last played for India in November 2021 against New Zealand in Kanpur, when the team management rested Pant. The 37-year-old Saha battled neck spasms to make a fighting, unbeaten half-century in the second innings to set up India’s declaration. It was in the same Test that KS Bharat, ten years Saha’s junior, stood in admirably as a substitute wicketkeeper and impressed with his neat glovework on a turning surface.Saha retained his place in India’s squad on the tour of South Africa, where he didn’t play a single Test, even as the chorus over the inclusion of a younger second wicketkeeper, Bharat, grew louder.India are scheduled to play five more Tests this year, two of which will be against Sri Lanka next month at home. The third Test, one that was postponed in Manchester last year following a Covid-19 outbreak in the Indian camp with India leading 2-1, will be played in England in July, while two are lined up in Bangladesh later in the year. The squad for the Sri Lanka series was announced on Saturday, with Saha among four senior players – Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ishant Sharma the others – to be left out. This was the first time since MS Dhoni’s retirement in 2014 that Saha has been left out of India’s squad altogether, with the selectors preferring Bharat, a veteran of 79 first-class matches.”We have only three Tests [five] this year and with Rishabh Pant having established himself as our No. 1-choice wicketkeeper, we were looking to groom a younger wicketkeeper,” Dravid explained. “That was it. This doesn’t change my feelings or respect for Wriddhi or his contribution.”Like I said, the easiest thing for me is to not have these conversations or not speak to players about it, but that’s not who I am or what I am going to do. I don’t expect them to like it, but at some stage I hope they will respect the fact that I was at least able to front up and have these conversations with them.”

Marnus Labuschagne guides Glamorgan to seven-wicket win with unbeaten fifty

Despite Ben Duckett coming close to twin tons, Nottinghamshire were below par, particularly with the ball

ECB Reporters Network17-Apr-2022An unbeaten half-century by world No. 1 Test batsman Marnus Labuschagne guided Glamorgan to a seven-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire in the LV= Insurance County Championship, ending their first visit to Trent Bridge for a red-ball match since 2007 with a first win on the ground since 1998.Chasing 166 to win in the fourth innings after taking Nottinghamshire’s final two second-innings wickets inside the first hour of play, Glamorgan wrapped up a 23-points win before tea on the final afternoon.Australia’s Labuschagne, in his first game back with the Welsh county after successful summers in 2019 and 2021, was dropped on 25, although it is doubtful that the miss had any bearing on the outcome of the match. It is a sobering result for Nottinghamshire, a popular tip to be Division Two champions this season. Ben Duckett came close to scoring a century in each innings but it was generally a below-par performance by the home side, particularly with the ball.James Pattinson, in his first match back at Trent Bridge, was outbowled by fellow Aussies Michael Neser and Michael Hogan, while the Australia-born Netherlands seamer Timm van der Gugten made an outstanding contribution both with bat and ball.Nottinghamshire added 18 runs to their overnight lead of 147 before Glamorgan removed their last two wickets. Brett Hutton shouldered arms to the ball that bowled him, one of three dismissals in the match where the batter offered no shot. Joey Evison made a creditable 37 before gloving a legside catch to wicketkeeper Chris Cooke as he went to pull James Weighell.Evison batted with a runner and was unable to bowl as Glamorgan set about their chase, one in which Nottinghamshire needed a salvo of early wickets if they were to create any real pressure for the batters on a wicket that had lasted well.None was forthcoming, openers David Lloyd and Andrew Salter rattling along at four runs an over before the latter departed in the 14th, the home side’s ambitions not helped by Pattinson conceding 22 in three overs.Salter was lbw as left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White managed to squeeze the ball past his inside edge. There was a second setback for Glamorgan in the last over before lunch when Lloyd was also out to a ball he chose to leave, Dane Paterson bringing one back to clip off stump.Paterson and Patterson-White applied a squeeze after lunch. That changed when Labuschagne lofted the left-arm spinner for six over long-off and Sam Northeast crashed four through the covers but when Northeast took on a short ball from Pattinson in the next over, he was caught at long-leg by Paterson, who struggled to track the flight of the ball against the glare of the sky before landing on his back with ball in hand.Northeast’s dismissal took one of Glamorgan’s potential match-winners out of the equation but others remained, not least Labuschagne, who had a let-off behind the stumps on 25 when Tom Moores dived across first slip but could not cling on to an edge off Paterson’s bowling.Labuschagne completed his half-century, a relatively workmanlike affair, when he cut Pattinson for just his third four, before Kiran Carlson, who made 47 in a stand worth 74, completed the victory with a flourish, handing Pattinson the indignity of being hooked for six to win the contest with 39 overs to spare.

Mohammad Hasnain undergoes official bowling test in bid to revive international career

The results will be compiled in two weeks and shared with the ICC, with the bowler optimistic that he will be cleared

Umar Farooq22-May-2022After three months of remedial work on his bowling action, Mohammad Hasnain has undergone an official test in a bid to revive his international career. Hasnain was suspended from bowling in international cricket in February, after he failed a biomechanics test in which the majority of the deliveries he bowled exceeded the 15-degree tolerance limit for a legal bowling action. The official outcome of the test, which is expected to be compiled in two weeks, will be shared with the ICC and all member boards in the world. Hasnain is optimistic that he will be cleared, but in case of an adverse outcome, he will have to go back to the drawing board to rework his action.Hasnain was first reported in January by umpires in the Big Bash League, where he was playing for Sydney Thunder. While awaiting his results in January, he was allowed to play any cricket that came his way. He subsequently featured in the PSL for his franchise Quetta Gladiators in their first three games of the season, as regulations allowed him to, but was benched soon after the board found out that his action was illegal.According to the ICC’s regulations on illegal bowling actions, the PCB can allow Hasnain to continue bowling in their domestic tournaments. But the PCB decided against it as the PSL is considered to be an international league. As a result, the PCB sent him back to the High Performance Centre to rework his action. It is understood that Hasnain worked with coaches who bowled around 5000 balls to him to help fix his action.ESPNcricinfo understands that the coaches figured out that Hasnain had been rotating his arm inconsistently to make the ball swing, causing a jerk. To bowl quicker deliveries, his landing was wild, making his alignment go out. It is understood that the structure of his new bowling action remains the same though his wrist, arm rotation and landing has been tweaked allowing him to bowl with consistent and repeatable action. He underwent multiple unofficial tests and the PCB, alongside Hasnain, went for official tests after getting encouraging results.Until he was suspended, Hasnain had been in and around Pakistan’s white-ball squads and already has a T20I hat-trick to his name. He had impressed in his short stint at the BBL, recruited as a replacement for English quick Saqib Mahmood, taking 3 for 20 in Thunder’s 28-run win over Adelaide Strikers on his debut. For the PCB, Hasnain has been an asset and among the bowlers the system had invested in as he was the among the few names in Pakistan who can bowl at 145kmph consistently.

Former Renegades seamer Cameron Stevenson named in USA squad for T20 World Cup Qualifiers

Fast bowler Rusty Theron is also included after missing the Ireland T20Is due to injury

Peter Della Penna22-Jun-2022Former Melbourne Renegades fast bowler Cameron Stevenson has been included in USA’s T20I squad for the first time as one of several changes to the group headed to Zimbabwe next month for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier B tournament, from July 10 to 17.Stevenson, 29, has played 12 ODIs for USA, including five during the recent tour of Texas, since making his List A debut for the national team in the CWI Super50 tournament at Trinidad in November 2019. However, he has not played a T20 match since suiting up for the Renegades on New Year’s Day 2017, when he took the wicket of Kevin Pietersen at the MCG in a seven-run win over Melbourne Stars.Stevenson effectively takes a spot made available by the absence of Ian Holland, who was USA’s standout player at the ICC Americas T20 World Cup Qualifier in Antigua last November when his team-leading 10 wickets in six matches propelled USA to a first-place finish and a spot in Zimbabwe. But Holland is unavailable to tour Zimbabwe due to his County cricket commitments at Hampshire.Fast bowler Rusty Theron is also included after missing the Ireland T20Is due to injury. It will be the 36-year-old’s first tour of the African continent with USA since making the switch in 2019 having previously played nine T20Is and four ODIs for his native South Africa from 2010 to 2012.The trickle-down effect of the Covid-effected T20I series against Ireland in December has also had an impact on USA’s squad for Zimbabwe. Sushant Modani and Yasir Mohammad have retained their spots in USA’s T20I squad after impressing as last-minute replacements against Ireland when four players – including Steven Taylor and vice-captain Aaron Jones – were ruled out in December due to Covid.Modani took advantage of his opportunity and scored a fifty on T20I debut in a win over Ireland. He was also one of USA’s most in-form batters in the recent ODIs in Texas, scoring three fifties and a maiden ODI century across the eight games. Teenage legspinner Mohammad also made his T20I debut against Ireland and played a crucial role in the two matches to maintain his spot for the Zimbabwe tour, effectively replacing left-arm spinner Karima Gore who was initially in USA’s T20I squad against Ireland before being ruled out with Covid. The arrival of Stevenson combined with the emergence of Modani and Mohammad – plus the return of Taylor, Jones and Jaskaran Malhotra, who also missed the Ireland matches with Covid – means a number of players make way. Ryan Scott, who made 8 and 11 in his two innings opening the batting against Ireland, has been left out. Xavier Marshall has also been dropped after scoring 4 off 11 in his only innings against Ireland. Teenage allrounder Ritwik Behera was also dropped after struggling in his pair of opportunities against Ireland, making a four-ball duck followed by 16 off 23 balls. Jessy Singh and Ali Sheikh were also left out after not taking the field against Ireland.USA’s squad leaves later this month to begin their preparation for the T20 World Cup Qualifier with four T20 matches in Namibia – two each against Namibia and Jersey – before moving on to Zimbabwe where they will play two more warmup matches against the Netherlands on July 6 and 7.USA have been placed in Group A of the Qualifier to be staged in Bulawayo where they will face Jersey, Singapore and Zimbabwe. The top two teams in each four-team group – Hong Kong, Netherlands, Papua New Guinea and Uganda are in Group B – will advance to the semi-finals where the two winners will advance to the T20 World Cup in Australia this October.USA T20I squad: Monank Patel (capt./wk), Aaron Jones (vice-captain), Marty Kain, Ali Khan, Jaskaran Malhotra, Sushant Modani, Yasir Mohammad, Saurabh Netravalkar, Nisarg Patel, Gajanand Singh, Cameron Stevenson, Steven Taylor, Rusty Theron, Vatsal Vaghela
