Leeds fans expecting big things from Douglas

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are expecting a big season from Barry Douglas after he provided an update after returning for pre-season.

The left-back had a rather underwhelming first term at Elland Road as his progress was hampered heavily by injuries.

Left-back is a very competitive position at the Yorkshire club, with Douglas, Ezgjan Alioski and Stuart Dallas all capable of playing there.

He showed flashes of brilliance though – his vital assist against Millwall back in March gave spectators a glimpse of what he is capable of.

The former Wolves defender was fantastic during the 2017/18 season in the Championship as he created 14 assists and scored five goals, and Leeds fans are hoping he can recapture that type of form next term.

The full-back certainly has quality, and if he can unlock that he could be a key man for Marcelo Bielsa next term.

Supporters are fully behind their man, and they are optimistic that he will have a breakout campaign in 2019/20.

Here’s what the Elland Road faithful have been saying on Twitter…

Spurs fans drool over incredible Foyth skill

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans couldn’t believe Juan Foyth’s incredible display of skill during the Copa America semi-final against Brazil.

The defender played 90 minutes at right-back as Argentina lost 2-0 to their South American rivals on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino proved decisive as the Samba stars progressed to the final at the expense of Lionel Messi and Co.

But Foyth grabbed a fair few admirers with a body feint that sent Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho in completely the wrong direction.

Normally deployed as a centre-back at Spurs under Mauricio Pochettino, Foyth enjoyed a solid showing at full-back against the likes of Firmino, Jesus and Coutinho.

He made three tackles and completed five dribbles from the right-back position, per WhoScored, but fans were more impressed with the remarkable piece of skill that embarrassed the former Liverpool ace.

West Ham set to cash in on Arnautovic despite poor deal

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United are set to sanction the €25m (£22.4m) departure of Marko Arnautovic to a Chinese club, believed to be Shanghai SIPG, sources have told Football FanCast.

The striker was the subject of an initial €22m (£19.7m) bid on Tuesday and asked the club to accept the offer.

West Ham stood firm, however, insisting that they expected the Austria international to honour his contract.

They have been forced into an embarrassing climbdown, though, with manager Manuel Pellegrini telling the club to sanction his sale according to FFC sources.

As recently as January, the Irons valued Arnautovic at £45m but they will now receive around half that as they look to shift a player who is regarded as a bad influence at the London Stadium.

A highly-placed source within the club has said “we will probably let him go” and the move will go through barring any late hitches, such as Arnautovic failing a medical.

West Ham will not even make a profit on the deal, having signed the player from Stoke City for a fee of up to £25m in 2017.

Indeed, sources have told FFC that the club are aware of how poor the finances of the deal are yet they are willing to accept it as they look to move on from another saga.

This happened in 2017, too, with Dimitri Payet sold to Marseille for £25m after the France international went on strike in order to force a move.

Arnautovic has not done that but this is the second time he has asked to leave, having first attempted to engineer an exit in January.

His departure will leave the club with one senior striker in Javier Hernandez.

The Mexico international is also regarded as expendable, however, and the Hammers will likely be forced to bring in at least one forward this summer.

The club remain in talks with Maxi Gomez, the Celta Vigo striker, despite claims that he could complete a move to Valencia, while they have also tabled a bid of £10m plus two players, Jordan Hugill and Sam Byram, for West Bromwich Albion’s Salomon Rondon.

Crystal Palace wouldn’t get Laurent Koscielny according to Kevin Campbell

[ad_pod ]Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has ruled out the chances of want-away Gunners captain Laurent Koscielny being used as part of any potential Wilfried Zaha deal following a suggestion from a Gunners fan on Twitter.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the north London club are reportedly keen to bring the Crystal Palace attacker to the Emirates Stadium this summer, but they are currently unable to meet his £80m price tag.

The Sun has reported that they are willing to offer £40m plus Mohamed Elneny, Calum Chambers and Carl Jenkinson for the Ivory Coast international, but the Eagles aren’t keen on that deal.

An Arsenal supporter then suggested using Koscielny as a sweetener instead of the likes of Chambers and Jenkinson after he refused to go on the tour to America on Thursday, but Campbell doesn’t believe the 6 foot 1 Frenchman would be interested.

The 49-year-old said: “Unfortunately he will not want to go there and that will break any deal!”

In the video below, find out which Chelsea academy prospect is reportedly being lined up to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka at Crystal Palace…

Is Campbell right?

Most likely. Reports suggest that the 33-year-old wants to return to his homeland following nine years with the Gunners, so swapping them for a team across the English capital would go against those wishes.

While the chance to link up with fellow countryman Mamadou Sakho at the heart of the defence could potentially be tempting, it appears as though Koscielny has already made his mind up on what he wants.

From Palace’s point of view they would surely be interested in the experienced centre-back given they don’t have a lot of depth in that position at Selhurst Park, but it’s unlikely he would be valued too highly as part of any Zaha deal given he turns 34 in September and suffered a serious Achilles injuryÂin May 2018.

Celtic fans are full of praise for Ryan Christie after dominant Champions League display

[ad_pod ]

Ryan Christie scored twice in Celtic’s comfortable win over Nomme Kalju and the fans are drooling over his performance.

Christie got the second and fourth in the Celts’ 5-0 demolition of the Estonian champions. The rout effectively means the Champions League tie is over with Neil Lennon’s men set to play in Estonia next Tuesday. One away goal would leave Nomme Kalju needing seven.

The midfielder was taken off before he had the chance to complete his hat-trick, substituted for want away midfielder Olivier Ntcham in the 71st minute.

But the 24-year-old has wasted little time this season asserting his authority on Lennon’s midfield. The former Inverness star has now bagged three goals and two assists in his three appearances for the Hoops so far this campaign.

It may be early and against average opposition but the creative midfielder could be on the cusp of a big season at Celtic Park after some encouraging displays, and is certainly looking like the man to take the crown from Tom Rogic as Lennon’s most advanced midfielder.

Here’s what the enthused supporters had to say about their star’s stunning performance on Twitter:

Liverpool would not be a perfect fit for Gareth Bale, despite Paul Ince’s claims

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, former Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince revealed that he thinks Real Madrid outcast Gareth Bale would be a perfect fit for the Reds, if they can afford him.

The Wales international finds himself in a sticky situation at the Santiago Bernabeu right now, after Zinedine Zidane brutally said that it would be ‘best for everyone’ if Bale left the Spanish capital.

That is easier said than done, however.

Check out some amazing tekkers in the video below…

Staggeringly, the former Tottenham forward earns £600k-a-week at Real Madrid, wages that he would presumably find very hard to get elsewhere in the top European leagues.

What did Ince say?

The 51-year-old said: “My opinion is if Liverpool can afford him, he should go there.

“Bale can play right, left or central. If I was looking at a team if they could afford him, it would be Liverpool. He needs to re-invent himself as a player and play football week in, week out.

“Who else could afford him? Man City maybe, Man United and I don’t think Tottenham would be the right club. I would like to see him at Liverpool. He still has four or five years left. I think he’d be a perfect fit.”

By no means a perfect fit

Perfect: ‘Having all the required or desirable elements, qualities, or characteristics; as good as it is possible to be.’

A ‘perfect’ fit suggests that there are no risks attached, and that the man who has scored 102 goals for Los Blancos would slot in seamlessly at Anfield.

That is far from the truth.

Astronomically high wages would presumably be tough for Liverpool to match – even if they did pay Bale that, rifts could potentially be caused within the squad and Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk would be more than entitled to ask for the same – so too could Sadio Mane.

Additionally, a player with this much baggage in terms of finances and obvious quality will need to play every possible minute, or questions will start to be asked about why he was signed.

Lastly, how could we forget about his injury problems? For a player earning what Bale does, you would want him to be available for every game, but the 6 foot 1 attacker has serious fitness issues – he missed nine games and had five separate spells out injured last term.

Bale would be far from a perfect fit.

Rangers fans react to strong starting XI for Progres Niederkorn tie

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans are loving the starting XI for their Europa League tie against Progres Niederkorn tonight.

Steven Gerrard has named a strong line-up as he aims to see off the side from Luxembourg, with Jermain Defoe preferred up-front to Alfredo Morelos.

The first leg was slightly disappointing for the Gers, with a 2-0 victory feeling underwhelming after dominating the game. Goals from Sheyi Ojo and Joe Aribo could’ve been added to by captain James Tavernier, but his penalty clipped the post at Ibrox and wasn’t followed up.

Should Gerrard’s men get past Progres, a feat the club couldn’t achieve back in 2017, then they already know the identity of their third-round opponents. The victors of the tie will face Danish Cup winners FC Midtjylland in what could be a tricky tie for the Light Blues.

Gerrard would hope to at least replicate last season’s Europa League group-stage exit in his second season in charge of the Gers and the fans are getting excited after his latest team announcement.

Celtic’s Ryan Christie is "arguably" the best player in Scotland, says Kris Commons

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former Celtic star Kris Commons wrote in The Sunday Mail (04/08/2019), as reported by Football Scotland, that he thinks Ryan Christie is “arguably the best player in Scottish football” right now.

What’s he said?

Christie is having the start to a season that most can only dream of. In his five appearances so far, the mercurial talent has a staggering six goals and three assists after his stunning hat-trick against St. Johnstone in the Celts’ Premiership opener.

Contributing to an incredible nine goals in just 327 minutes on the pitch means he has played a part in a goal every 36 minutes so far this season.

It’s only early August but pundits are already tripping over themselves to heap praise on the former Inverness kid. Commons becomes the latest to eulogise about the 24-year-old after his goal-laden performance in the 7-0 win over the Saints.

The former Hoops hero stated: “He’s arguably the best player in Scottish football. There’s no doubt that his performances now demand that he is one of the first – if not the first – name on Neil Lennon’s team-sheet.”

Jumped the gun

Christie has certainly wasted no time in staking his claim for Player of the Year, but we can’t help but feel Commons has jumped the gun somewhat.

On current form, there’s few better on the entire British isle let alone just Scotland, but it’s important to have a look at who the performances have come against.

Nomme Kalju were hopeless at Parkhead in their 5-0 obliteration. Sarajevo were better but 5-2 on aggregate was hardly a surprising scoreline. As for St. Johnstone, it’s no exaggeration to say they’re a mess – even Montrose and Forfar beat them in the League Cup group stages this season.

It also needs to be remembered just how good some of his teammates are too. Callum McGregor and James Forrest haven’t been so obviously good this season but are vital cogs to the way the club plays, allowing for their side’s and Christie’s fantastic early start to the campaign.

But while it might be a little soon to be calling him the best player in the Premiership or the first name on the team-sheet, Christie is certainly on the right tracks to remove any doubt from Commons’ statement come May.

Liverpool icons Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen share throwback Super Cup snaps

[ad_pod ]

The Reds have now officially landed in Istanbul and are gearing up for a huge clash at Besiktas Park.

Of course, Liverpool know this city quite well as they have experienced

/B1G_waujnTk/?utm_source=ig_embed” data-lasso->past success here, but now a slightly different challenge awaits them in the form of the UEFA Super Cup.

This annual clash pits the two champions of Europe against each other to determine who the real king actually is.

Liverpool are entering the bout as the winners of the Champions League, with Chelsea as the Europa League winners. The clash will kick-off at 8pm this evening.

And as we’re getting ever closer to the start of the match, both Jamie Carragher and Michael Owen, former Liverpool stars, have taken to Instagram to share their support for the Reds.

Both icons have posted images of Liverpool’s past success in the competition.

If the Reds win against Chelsea tonight, that would be their fourth win overall with the last three coming in 1977, 2001 and 2005 respectively.

Achieving that would also see them equal Real Madrid’s tally.

Ex-Manchester United star Andy Cole shuts Gary Neville down over penalty criticism

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Manchester United star Andy Cole has told Gary Neville to “get real” following the latter’s verdict on the Red Devils’ penalty fiasco at Wolves.

What did he say?

Neville delivered a brutal assessment of the process behind Paul Pogba’s missed penalty at Molineux, and insisted it showed a lack of leadership.

Now, Cole has argued the fact Rashford didn’t appear to “kick up a stink about it” showed that the reaction to the incident has been blown widely out of proportion.

Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

He said: “I didn’t see Marcus kick up a stink about it so Marcus was comfortable about giving him the penalty. We are talking about Paul missing a penalty when the goalkeeper makes a very, very good save.

“I get on well with Gary Neville, but when people start talking about treachery and all that… come on, this is a sport. Let’s get real. We love football but when we start talking on those levels, he left me scratching my head a little bit.

“He didn’t do it on purpose. The goalkeeper made a very good save. Yes, Marcus scored a penalty against Chelsea the week before but if Marcus was comfortable and Paul was comfortable we have to get on with it and move on.”

Over the top

Would the reaction to it have been as significant had United won? Or if it didn’t involve Pogba? The France World Cup winner has endured a rocky ride in recent months, getting into a verbal altercation with fans at Old Trafford and then publicly admitting he would embrace a new challenge.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

So when the 26-year-old fluffed his lines in the second-half, it became so easy for people to start jumping on the bandwagon to criticise him. Rashford certainly didn’t appear to kick up a fuss at the time, or even after it, and ultimately that is the key concern – how Pogba’s teammates reacted to it. And judging by what has happened since, the Frenchman retains the backing of those that are most important.
