Leeds fans react to club’s plans for new training ground

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United are planning to build a new “world-class” training facility on the site of a former inner-city school, as reported by The Yorkshire Evening Post.

The Whites currently train at Thorp Arch, which was opened in 1994.

However, the Championship outfit are keen to put together a new facility on the grounds of Matthew Murray High School in Holbeck, which closed in 2006.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has reported that a decision on the land will be made on September 18.

As expected, the news has been greeted well by the Leeds fans on social media, with a number pleased to learn of their club’s plans.

It remains to be seen whether the Whites can launch another challenge for promotion this season, and ultimately secure a return to the top flight.

However, building a new training facility would be a huge step in the right direction for the club’s future.

While the general reaction has been good, as seen below, one supporter has questioned what would happen to the existing facility:

Rafa Benitez opens up about Liverpool’s 2005 Champions League final heroics

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Rafa Benitez has described the moments inside the dressing room in Istanbul during the 2005 Champions League final and explained what he said to his players to make them turn the match around.

What did he say?

Everyone knows the story of Liverpool in Istanbul and the astonishing turnaround that was overseen by Benitez, but not too many are familiar with the finer details behind what was perhaps the most stunning comeback in the history of the European Cup.

The 59-year-old has had a long and successful career in both England and Spain, but his crowning achievement is surely the Champions League win in 2005.

Liverpool defied the odds to make the final and at 3-0 down at the interval not many outside that dressing room believed the trophy could return to Anfield.

Even Benitez himself must have had doubts but he kept a cool head, and in a Q&A for The Atheltic he has explained his mindset and what he tried to achieve through his team-talk and half-time changes:

“I try to explain to anyone who listens to me that my English accent and my knowledge of English at that time was even worse than now! So imagine thinking about what to say when you were 2-0, thinking about what I was going to say, and then we conceded the third goal.

“The message was clear: Give them some hope, some confidence, tell them that if we score one goal we will be back in the game, and change the tactics to three at the back and two holding midfielders, to control Kaka between the lines with Hamann and Alonso.

“After [half-time] we were lucky enough to score goals in a short period and that was a plus for everyone because we grew in confidence, little by little.”

Benitez was right in his assessment of the situation. Steven Gerrard’s towering header gave both the Liverpool crowd and the players the lift they needed to subsequently deal Milan a devastating blow, and the Reds didn’t look back after that.

The man to handle a difficult situation

Over the course of his career Benitez has experienced the ups and downs of management – as most have – but he has always remained a composed and level-headed figure on the touchline, and that was exactly what Liverpool needed in that situation.

Kaka and Hernan Crespo were the main architects of Liverpool’s downfall in the first half, but by crowding the middle of the pitch Benitez enabled his team to dominate the midfield and reduce the space available to Milan’s key men.

Hamman’s introduction allowed Liverpool to retain possession but more importantly gave Gerrard free reign to make runs into the box, which he did to great effect for Liverpool’s first and third goals.

The back three also provided extra cover for a defence which had twice failed to deal with Kaka’s through balls, with Djimi Traore’s physical attributes making a difference late on when Sami Hyppia and Jamie Carragher began to tire.

Benitez was brave and showed flexibility in a testing situation, and gave his team a fighting chance at a time they desperately needed it.

Sunderland fans worried their squad has gotten worse this summer

The dust has settled on the transfer window and there are seven new faces at Sunderland, but plenty of fans think they have come out of the summer weaker than they went in.

The Black Cats had a relatively quiet deadline day, confirming just one final deal with the arrival of former Leeds defender Laurens De Bock.

De Bock strengthens a left-back position that was in dire need of improvement, but fans feel they should have done more to buff up their attacking ranks.

In defence, the arrival of Jordan Willis seems to have helped Jack Ross finally find a settled centre-back pairing, as the former Coventry man has partnered Alim Ozturk thus far.

Up front, the club have added Marc McNulty to Charlie Wyke and Will Grigg to supply the goals, but they did little to fix their lack of creativity.

The only midfield signing was George Dobson, who is more of a tenacious ball-winner than he is a playmaker, and Ross may yet again find himself short of creativity in the middle of the park.

That’s what the fans think anyway, as you can see from the Twitter reactions down below…

Leeds’ Tyler Roberts posts a very encouraging Instagram story

[ad_pod ]

Tyler Roberts is finally edging closer to full fitness after his injury problems saw him miss months of action for Leeds United.

For the first time since he was ruled out back in May, Roberts was named in United’s U23 side.

He started on the bench against Crystal Palace, before being subbed on for the second half.

It wasn’t the most exciting of games as it finished 0-0, but Roberts was clearly glad just to be back in action.

Before the game, he posted an image of the pitch on his story with the caption ‘Been a while’, accompanied by some emojis.

This post and the subsequent appearance should excite supporters of the Yorkshire club.

Roberts was an important player for Marcelo Bielsa last term as he appeared 28 times for the Whites.

His return would add another weapon to Leeds’ arsenal, and seeing him back in action for the U23 side will certainly put smiles on the faces of many supporters.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola should switch to a back three for Shakhtar clash

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Hands up if you saw that coming then. Manchester City’s defeat to newly-promoted Norwich on Saturday came out of the blue, and big questions have since been asked about what the implications are for the future.

Heading into his side’s first Champions League group stage game on Wednesday, Pep Guardiola has a lot to answer for. The decision to drop Kevin De Bruyne was eyebrow-raising and proved costly, while the centre-back partnership between Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones flattered to deceive.

With all that in mind, could we see the City boss look to do something different in midweek? Here’s a look at how the Citizens could line up for the clash against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The big issue for Guardiola is undoubtedly how he goes about addressing Aymeric Laporte’s absence. The Frenchman has been ruled out until the start of the new year with a serious injury, while Stones has now been added to the list of concerns too.

Therefore, could the City boss opt for a back-three to give his defence more protection? Kyle Walker has played the role for England ten times, whilst Fernandinho’s qualities as a holding midfielder mean he wouldn’t look too out of place as the middle of the three centre-backs.

A change in shape could allow summer signing Joao Cancelo to make his first start of the season, and as someone who provided five assists last season for Juventus, he will relish the greater attacking freedom as a wing-back.

In midfield, Kevin De Bruyne will surely come straight back into the City line-up after being confined to the bench on Saturday, and should partner Rodri.

Playing this formation would also allow Guardiola the option to change things around tactically in terms of how the Citizens operate as an attacking unit. Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling could operate from out wide with Sergio Aguero as the lone striker, or the latter two could partner each other in attack with a number ten in behind them.

Ultimately, City need a greater defensive balance over the coming months until Laporte is able to make his much-needed return. Changing tack and opting for a back-three would give them additional security and may be the answer to all their concerns.

Birmingham’s Fran Villalba sends encouraging message ahead of Preston clash

Indeed, The Spanish midfielder made it clear that he and his teammates were ready for this weekend’s game against Preston North End.

They’re going to have to be at their best if they want to get anything, as their opponents this weekend sit fifth in the Championship table.

The Midlands outfit are more than capable of beating teams that are flying high though, as proven by the fact that they handed Charlton their first loss of the season last week.

It remains to be seen whether or not Birmingham will get anything this weekend, but if every player is as prepared as Villalba, they’ll have a great chance.

West Ham fans unhappy with Pablo Fornals’ latest display

[ad_pod ]

How did West Ham lose 4-0 against Oxford United in the League Cup on Wednesday?

Yes, it was a rotated squad, but there was still more than enough talent in the Hammers’ side to beat the League One team, yet they were absolutely battered by the Us. Manuel Pellegrini will have been very disappointed with the display, just like the fans.

There was the need for a response against Bournemouth on Saturday in the Premier League. A 2-2 draw is not exactly what they would have wanted, but it was enough to see them move up to third in the table.

There were some good performances, and some not so good ones. Pablo Fornals struggled against the Cherries, and was taken off with 24 minutes left. Since joining the Irons, he has scored just one goal and has failed to register an assist in nine matches.

The London Stadium faithful are clearly expecting more from him, and they were unhappy with his display at the Vitality Stadium. They took to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Man City’s clash with Wolves could be decided by midfield maestros’ duel

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Having arrived in the summer for a reported £62.8m, Rodri had big expectations on what he could add to the Manchester City side. Pep Guardiola had heavily relied on ageing veteran Fernandinho for the holding midfield role last season, playing him in 42 games across all competitions. It was therefore no surprise to see the Citizens address that issue in the transfer window.

Speaking after his signing, the club’s director of football Txiki Begiristain remarked: “Rodri has proven himself as a hugely talented, young midfielder. He has as all the attributes we are looking for. He works hard defensively, makes himself available to receive the ball and uses it well when in possession. We are confident he will be a success.”

The indoor football skills in the video below have to be seen to be believed…

So far, he has very much proven to be an influential member of the first-team. Dictating the play from deep, and breaking up opposition attacks, the Spaniard has slotted into the side with ease. But against Wolves at the Etihad on Sunday, he will be coming up against a midfielder who has been around the block, and more than matches his game. The contest between Rodri and Joao Moutinho promises to be a truly defining one.

Playing in central midfield, the duo represent the heartbeat of their respective sides. Whether it’s collecting the ball off the centre-backs and starting attacks from deep, or being in the right place at the right time to make a tackle or interception, both Rodri and Moutinho are vital to the way their teams play.

Watch Manchester City Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The latter has averaged more tackles and double the amount of interceptions per game this season compared to his Spanish counterpart. But that is perhaps down to the greater defending Wolves naturally have to do in games than City.

Both have very similar numbers of key passes per game, with Moutinho edging it by 0.4. At the Etihad on Sunday, the 33-year-old will have to be at his creative best to create chances for his forwards.

Rodri meanwhile, completely dominates the Wolves midfielder for the other two key passing categories. The former Atletico Madrid star is the lynch-pin at the base of City’s midfield, orchestrating attacks and feeding balls into the likes of Bernardo Silva, Raheem Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne, amongst others.

If Moutinho can be quick to press the 23-year-old and stop him from looking up and picking his pass, the visitors will have a greater chance of picking up a positive result. Allow him to set the tempo of the game however, and Wolves can kiss the three points goodbye.

Charlton fans react as Albie Morgan joins Ebbsfleet United on a 28-day loan

Loads of Charlton fans have taken to Twitter to react after it was confirmed by the club’s official account that Albie Morgan has joined Ebbsfleet United on an initial 28-day loan deal.

The 19-year-old is unable to join a side in the Football League due to the fact that the transfer window is closed, although he is able to move to teams competing at National League level and below, as Lee Bowyer told Charlton’s official site.

“In an ideal world, he would be going out to a League club but, due to the transfer window, he can only go to teams at National League level and below. As soon as we heard Ebbsfleet were interested, it was a no-brainer for all parties.”

Morgan played a key role in the Addicks’ promotion campaign last term, starting both playoff semi-final ties against Doncaster Rovers, although he missed out on a place in the squad for the final against Sunderland.

A few Charlton fans below seem to think that the teenager – who has made one appearance in the Championship this season – is too good for Ebbsfleet, with one describing the deal as a “real coup” for the National League side.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction from a load of Charlton supporters…
