Watford: Fans far from impressed with club’s Sheffield United match report

Many Watford fans have given their furious admissions after seeing the club’s post-match report on Saturday.

New Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has only been at the club for exactly one month (joining September 7th), yet is already coming under pressure from some of the fanbase with the club still bottom of the Premier League without a win after eight matches.

After Saturday, it seemed that many fans saw their 0-0 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane as two points missed and a big opportunity gone to waste against one of the newbies in the division.

Statistics suggest that Watford were probably the worst side out of the two. Sheffield United dominated possession, having 61% of the ball at Vicarage Road, and they were also able to record more shots with nine to eight, as well as more shots on target with three to two, according to BBC’s figures.

Many Watford fans responded furiously to the club tweet which linked the match report, with many asking the club to stop tweeting and others just simply venting their anger at the performances.

Newcastle United fans react negatively to Lee Charnley’s academy claim

Many Newcastle United supporters have responded negatively to a recent claim by Toon Managing Director Lee Charnley, regarding the Magpies’ academy and his ambitions for it.

Charnley has told The Athletic (via The Chronicle) that he wants United to have the best academy in the North East, and sees the youth ranks at Darsley Park brimming with local prospects who “will get chances” like North Shields-born brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff.

“We want to be the best academy in the region,” Charnley said. “Our vision is we want local boys to look at it and think it’s not going to be full of boys from London, Manchester or abroad. Between nine and 16, it will be an academy with boys predominantly from the local area.

“There will be exceptions but generally, it will be local. Other clubs may move boys around the country, sign them at 12, 13, 14, move their education. We’re not doing that. Consciously, we have made a decision not to do that and to give local boys the opportunity.”

Fans have not taken to his comments positively, though, as many feel Charnley is speaking on a topic that former manager Rafael Benitez had pressed the Magpies to focus on before he walked away from the club.

The Spaniard used to plead to owner Mike Ashley to invest funds into Newcastle’s academy while in discussions with the Sports Direct owner regarding a new contract, but those ambitions did not appear to be matched at the time.

Charnley has now stressed a desire to have a successful academy and hopes to see more names follow the Longstaff brothers into the senior fold soon.

He added: “[The] ultimate aim is that one player every year comes through our system and ends up in our first-team squad. That is what we want to achieve.”

Newcastle could benefit from Jorge Mendes should Peter Kenyon buy the club

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

The Chronicle is reporting that Peter Kenyon would be looking to make use of his friendship with super agent Jorge Mendes should he ever assume the rule of CEO at St James’ Park.

What’s the story?

Mike Ashley is currently the owner of the Toon, and remains as unpopular as ever with the club’s fans. In the summer, there had been hope that the Bin Zayed group would complete their purchase of the north-east outfit, but it eventually never materialised.

A Newcastle fan calls for Sean and Matt Longstaff’s Mum to give birth to a starting eleven’s worth of Longstaffs in the video below…

Former Chelsea and Manchester United chief executive Peter Kenyon was recently linked with a potential bid of £300m, and The Chronicle has been looking at what his plans would be should a takeover go through. They have insinuated that his friendship with Mendes could be put to good use in terms of new signings.

Follow the Wolves blueprint

In terms of transfers, Mendes is one of the biggest names in world football. His close relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo is well known, and his client list includes a whole host of famous footballers.

He already has previous with English football, too. A number of the players he represents have moved to Wolves, for example. They have benefited massively from the Portuguese, with Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Diogo Jota and Rui Patricio all having joined the Midlands outfit having been on the books of the 53-year-old’s agency Gestifute.

Should Kenyon manage to buy Newcastle, he could use his friendship to oversee a similar influx of players to St James’ Park. Newcastle, arguably, would be an even better attraction than the side from Molineux. The club’s stadium, for example, is one of the biggest not just in England, but Europe as a whole, whilst the fans in that part of the country are famous for their exceptional support. The city of Newcastle, as well, has more going for it than Wolverhampton, which would also be of interest to players.

It can often be hard bringing in quality stars when not being part of the elite, but that has not been a problem for Nuno Espirito Santo and Co. Newcastle are often called a sleeping giant, and have not won a trophy since the 1969 Fairs Cup. Kenyon and Mendes could help the club live up to its full potential.

Birmingham fans are rather amused by comments made by Graeme Jones

Is that a little bit of fear I detect coming from the Luton boss?

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s game, Graeme Jones has slammed the EFL for their scheduling of the fixtures.

The Hatters managed claimed that his side have been put at a disadvantage with the Blues getting 24 hours rest having played on Tuesday night.

And Birmingham fans responded to his anger with much merriment.

Many suggested that he was merely getting his excuses in beforehand in case his side weren’t able to get a result.

You suppose these things come and go, everyone has to go through them at some stage of the season, this weekend just happens to be Luton’s turn.

Now the question will be, if Jones thinks Birmingham are at an advantage, will they be able to take advantage of it?

Or will this all turn out to be a load of nonsense with Luton taking all three points?

Here’s what Birmingham fans were sharing on social media.

Leeds United’s hunt for Baghdad Bounedjah just became a whole lot easier

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Half the price, and potentially half the headache.

Leeds might have just been handed a significant boost in their attempts to bring in some much-needed firepower.

According to reports in his native Algeria, Baghdad Bounedjah might be available for a lot less than the release clause in his contract would suggest.

Whilst his current clause stands at €15m (£12.9m), the report claims that his current club, Qatari side Al-Sadd aren’t against bringing that price down in order to get him off their books, with the club even going so far as to offer him up for half that fee.

As we have discussed previously on FFC, when the fee was closer to the €15m mark, Leeds would be taking an incredible risk by forking out that much money on one striker when they aren’t in the best of positions financially.

After all, Andrea Radrizzani has detailed how the club’s £40m wage bill isn’t sustainable going forward.

However, with his club now admitting that it wouldn’t take as much to get him off their books, then all of a sudden the deal becomes a little more manageable and intriguing.

With reports circulating that Leeds could soon be receiving a chunk of financial support from Qatar Sports Investment as well, and this has all the makings of a transfer that could end up going through, and not a moment too soon.

But that does depend on the investment due to Victor Orta previously claiming they didn’t have the means for a permanent transfer.

It’s no secret that Leeds are struggling in front of goal this season, with the team squandering as many as 12 points so far this season because of their failure to find the back of the net (via Experimental361).

Given his impressive goal return in the Middle East, bagging 97 in 78, he could certainly lend them a hand in that department, only this time the risk: reward ratio would be a lot more in their favour.

Sunderland fans back under-pressure Will Grigg after EFL Cup shoot-out miss

A number of Sunderland fans have voiced their support for Will Grigg after the under-pressure forward missed his penalty in the EFL Cup shoot-out defeat to Oxford United.

Grigg stepped up to take the Black Cats’ third spot-kick against the U’s, but blasted his effort sky high to the left and watched on as it sailed over the bar.

The 28-year-old had entered the action in the 55th-minute for Joel Lynch after the centre-back suffered a knock, although his only telling action of the game came a quarter of an hour later when Grigg won a free-kick in the attacking third.

Solihull-born Grigg has come in for a range of backlash on social media since the Carabao Cup clash, with a quick search on Twitter showing Sunderland fans sharing messages suggesting the pressure of guiding the Black Cats out of League One may be too much for him.

Others have railed in support of the striker, though, with one suggesting boss Phil Parkinson needs to supply Grigg with the right service, as he can then be a 20-plus-goal centre-forward.

Find out what happened when a world-record-holding freestyler attempting skills with the worst pair of boots available on eBay in the video below…

Grigg hit 19 goals in the 2012/13 League One term for Walsall, before later penning 20 in the 14/15 campaign for MK Dons, 25 in the 15/16 season for Wigan Athletic and 19 for the Latics in 2017/18.

Promotion into the Championship for last season again saw Grigg struggle before moving to the Stadium of Light in January, where he only managed to strike four goals in 18 league games before the close of the season.

The 13-cap former Northern Ireland international recently opened his account for the term against Tranmere Rovers, which brought an end to a 21-game goal drought in the third-tier including last season’s Play-Offs.

Liverpool fans slam Joe Gomez for ‘abject’ display vs Arsenal in Carabao Cup

Lots of Liverpool fans have been slamming Joe Gomez on social media for an ‘abject’ display against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

The 22-year-old was making his first start since September in a makeshift backline, as Jurgen Klopp made wholesale changes to the side which beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday.

Facing the Gunners could have served as an audition for Gomez in the wake of news that Joel Matip faces a further six weeks on the sidelines, but his performance has left some fans suggesting he has ‘gone backwards’ from the days he looked ‘like a world beater’ alongside Virgil van Dijk.

His role in Arsenal’s third goal on Wednesday night has been labelled ‘absolutely pathetic’ by one Reds supporter, while others have suggested the £31.5million-rated centre-half ‘now looks like a reserve player’.

Gomez has rarely featured in 2019 since fracturing his leg last December, with only one start in the current Premier League season in a particularly sparse campaign.

Wednesday night’s appearance was also his first full 90 minute outing since facing MK Dons in the Third Round of the EFL Cup.

Gomez made three successful tackles against the Gunners, along with a team-high five clearances. The 7-cap England international also penned a game-high eight successful aerial duels and completed 78 of his 91 passes, per WhoScored data.

Aston Villa fans react to Gareth Southgate’s Jack Grealish comments

Jack Grealish has been omitted from Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming fixtures against Montenegro and Kosovo, and these Aston Villa fans have been having their say on the decision from the Three Lions’ boss.

Despite having started the 2019/20 campaign in impressive form, scoring two goals and registering three assists, Southgate has deemed the playmaker unworthy of selection in the England squad, preferring the likes of Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford in the attacking roles.

After having declared for England in 2015, Grealish is yet to win a senior cap for England, but the Villa captain’s performances in the top-flight this season have led to Southgate stating that is ready to call up the 24-year-old if other players were to drop out of the squad.

This has caused a significant reaction from a number of Villa fans, with many stating they believe their captain should be in the squad.

Here are some of the best reactions to Southgate’s comments regarding Grealish.

Leeds’ Carlos Corberan deserves credit for helping bring U23s through

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Leeds United have been brilliant at utilising their young talent in recent times.

Jack Clarke and Jamie Shackleton both emerged as two important squad players last term, making over 20 league appearances each, and this season has seen another teenager follow in their footsteps.

Indeed, Leif Davis is slowly becoming a rather important player for Marcelo Bielsa, and he’s been more than impressive in his recent substitute appearances, even earning Gareth Bale comparisons for his showing against QPR.

People at the club have clearly been impressed by him as well as he was handed a new contract on Monday, but there is one unsung hero who should get a lot of credit for these players’ development.

Indeed, Carlos Corberan has been vital in bringing these young players into the fold, not only with his work at U23 level, but due to his presence in the first-team.

The more you think about it, having the U23s boss as a coach at first-team level seems like an absolute masterstroke.

With the plethora of young talent available at Leeds’ disposal it’s vital that these players are able to make the step up to the next level without being overwhelmed, and that’s where Corberan can come in.

He’s a familiar presence in that first-team dressing room for players to connect with, and while playing under Marcelo Bielsa could be a daunting task as he’s regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the world, having Corberan right next to him can steady the nerves as these players are used to working with the Spaniard at U23 level.

That’s also the genius of having Corberan working with both sides. The U23s gaffer can get these players used to Bielsa’s tactics and systems, while also providing the first-team boss with updates on which youngsters to keep an eye on.

Bearing that in mind, is it really any surprise some youngsters have been making such impressive strides? Arguably not.

Leeds United have got a lot right since appointing the Argentine as their manager, but their ace in the hole is certainly Corberan and everything he brings to the table.

Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard has finally arrived to the scene after Eibar display

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

It would probably be an understatement to say that Real Madrid’s weekend fixture was a success.

In reality, it was much more than that – it was a dominant performance that finally saw Zinedine Zidane’s troops show what they are truly capable of as they dismantled Eibar away from home.

The final result is actually quite telling of that story. After all, 4-0 victories are not really seen that often, even when we’re talking about a side as big as Real Madrid.

Watch Spanish Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

But this was fully deserved as Los Blancos were the better side throughout the 90 minutes and they never gave their opposition an inch to take.

And one big reason behind their commandeering victory was actually Eden Hazard.

The Belgian played what was most likely his best game in the royal white kit of the Galacticos to date. Ever since he arrived from Chelsea last summer, expectations were high and rightly so, considering we’re talking about a player who scored 110 goals in 352 games he played for the Blues.

But even though he wasn’t on the scoresheet against Eibar, he was definitely one of the best players on the pitch.

After all, he warranted an 8.64 rating according to WhoScored and got his marks without actually scoring or assisting. This just goes to show how influential he was for the Galacticos.

The Belgian forward tallied an incredible seven dribbles on the night and deployed one key pass in the process.

Apart from that, he also maintained 86.5% passing accuracy, managed one shot and recorded 64 touches in the process, which shows how involved he was in all the proceedings on the pitch.

We should also mention that he deployed three crosses on the night and that all four of his long balls found their targets.

Without a doubt, it’s not really a surprise that his brilliant performance coincided with Real Madrid’s and resulted in one of their best displays in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign as a whole.

If this was any indication at all Zidane’s troops could fully emerge from their cocoon once Hazard does the same, and on his most recent display he might be well on his way to doing exactly that.

Let’s see if he can maintain this good form moving forward.
