Bye-bye Garnacho: Man Utd could land "superstar" Rashford upgrade

With just over two weeks to go in the transfer market, Ruben Amorim is yet to make any new additions to his Manchester United squad to try and make his own mark after taking over in November.

There’s no question that new signings are needed if the side are to move in the right direction under the 39-year-old, especially considering their lowly Premier League standing of 12th after the first 21 outings.

Supporters have grown frustrated in recent months, understandably so given the previous success in the North West, especially considering the rise of the likes of Nottingham Forest and AFC Bournemouth, who are battling it out for a European spot this season.

Ruben Amorim

Many of the frustrations have been a result of the poor recruitment, with many of the players brought into the club failing to make the desired impact – numerous of which haven’t been worth the fees forked out for their services.

However, if the club are to invest in the near future, outgoings need to be made, with countless members of the first-team already being touted with departures from the Theatre of Dreams.

Man Utd’s potential attacking outgoings in January

Numerous players have been touted with a move away from Old Trafford, including £86m man Antony, who has been of interest from the likes of Real Betis and Olympiacos over the last few days.

The Brazilian isn’t the only one close to the exit door, with fellow attacker Alejandro Garnacho also attracting interest from Italian side Napoli, who look set to lose their own star man Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to PSG.

The Argentine could well leave after previously dropping out of Amorim’s side completely, but the Red Devils would demand a fee in the region of £60m to offload the youngster this month.

Garnacho could be followed out of the door by Marcus Rashford, with the Englishman almost certain to depart his boyhood club after a fallout with the new manager which has seen him excluded from the 39-year-old’s plans.

Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan and West Ham have all been mooted as potential destinations for the 27-year-old, whether that be on a temporary or permanent basis.

Should they lose all three of the aforementioned attackers, the side would be massively lacking in options within the final third, making it crucial that the hierarchy target replacements accordingly before the end of the window.

The player who would be an upgrade on Rashford

Out of the three players linked with a move from Old Trafford, a deal for Rashford would undoubtedly be a sad one for the supporters, especially after his long-standing affiliation with the football club.

The Englishman has made over 400 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring more than 130 goals, producing countless moments of magic during his time in the first team.

However, no player is bigger than the club, with trust needing to be put in the new manager to make his own impact on the squad to try and lead them back to their glory days.

A deal for the academy graduate could make room for Lille star Jonathan David to make a switch to Old Trafford as a result, handing Amorim with the added attacking reinforcements he’s desired recently.

The Canadian has been linked with a move to join the Red Devils this month, along with the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur, but could be an absolute bargain given his current contract situation.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

David is out of contract in the summer, either opening the door to a pre-contract agreement to join in the summer, or moving for a minimal fee in this window.

Any move would hand Amorim an upgrade on Rashford, softening the blow of his potential departure away from the North West over the coming weeks.

The Lille ace, who’s been dubbed a “superstar” by international teammate Jonathan Osario, has massively outscored the Englishman and also posted a higher shot-on-target rate, proving Amorim a clinical option in forward areas.

He’s also managed to complete more of his attempted take-ons, whilst achieving a higher pass completion rate, potentially being the perfect all-round option for United in attacking areas – ending their current dilemma over who should be the regular starter at the top end of the pitch.

All things considered, it would be a superb addition should the club land David before the end of the transfer window, possessing a lot of qualities that could massively improve the club’s fortunes in the years ahead.

However, given the competition for his signature, they would have to act quickly to land a talent who would be the perfect replacement for Rashford – and Garnacho – should the pair complete their own transfer.

'Coaching in our country is simply outstanding' – San Jose Earthquakes' Bruce Arena says he learned more from NFL, NBA, MLB coaches than international soccer coaches

The legendary soccer coach was candid and believes his philosophy was shaped more by Americans than coaches from Europe and South America

  • Arena credits American coaches across major sports for his development
  • He praises the quality of current MLS coaching landscape
  • Arena also predicts elite future for American soccer

    WHAT HAPPENED

Legendary American coach Bruce Arena believes coaches from the U.S. are underrated – even compared to their peers from soccer powerhouses in Europe and South America.

"Yes, I don’t doubt that at all," Arena said when asked if he believes American coaches are disrespected or not respected at all, during an appearance on Alexi Lalas’ podcast. "And I tell these stories frequently, when I went abroad and met with coaches and sat down with them, and I was kind of surprised at where they’re at.

"And I still say to this day, I’ve learned more by talking with a coach in the NFL, the NBA, or Baseball than I have speaking with coaches in Europe or South America. And I think coaching in our country is simply outstanding, it really is."

Arena also expressed optimism about the future of U.S. soccer, pointing to the growing strength of coaching across the country.

"Have we trailed a little bit in our sport [Football]? Yes, but today you know, I look around the league and there’s some great American coaches in our league and I know that better than anybody because I’ve been around these guys for a number of years," he said. "We have some simply outstanding coaches in the league, and I think they have a great future, and our sport and our national team programs are going to be elite one day. I have no doubt about that."

Arena’s comments carry weight given his extensive experience in the American game. The legendary coach spent time with more than half a dozen MLS teams and led the U.S. men’s national team from 1998 to 2006 and again in 2016-17, crossing paths with some of modern football’s top coaching minds along the way. He is still the only U.S. manager to take the team to the World Cup quarterfinals in the modern era.

For Arena and San Jose Earthquakes, they continued their MLS season with a 1-1 draw over the Columbus Crew, which kept them in 10th place in the Western Conference. They have 10 points after as many games and have lost just twice in their last six games, a streak that includes two wins and as many draws. Tottenham fell short in their pursuit of PSG outcast Randal Kolo Muani, who joined Juventus on a season-long loan deal, with time slowly running out for technical director Johan Lange and chairman Daniel Levy to get extra bodies through the door.

The Lilywhites have suffered serious squad shortages throughout 2024/2025, thanks to repeated injuries and suspensions, and Postecoglou says the north Londoners are working hard on signing quality new players before deadline day.

“Club is working hard as it can and that’s all you can ask for,” said Postecoglou on potential January incomings.

“January’s not an easy month but I do know a lot of work is being done behind the scenes to try to get some reinforcements in.”

The 59-year-old also confirmed Spurs’ previous interest in Kolo Muani, before he opted to join Juve, and Postecoglou also said that he’s not entirely fussed about losing that race for the forward’s signature.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

“For me? No,” said Postecoglou when asked if missing out on Kolo Muani was a blow.

“We were in… Well, it depends what you mean by in. We’ve been interested and were looking at a number of players. But did we get to the point where we thought he was coming to us? No.

“It is tricky as all clubs are finding. And I guess traditionally it ramps up in that final week so we’re approaching there for all clubs. It’s even trickier in January because one you try to acquire a player, the club wants to replace that player. So there’s all sorts of logistics involved.”

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Ben Davies will be returning from injury sooner rather than later, but Tottenham have still been linked with a new centre-back for this window alongside an attacker.

Tottenham weighing up January bid for AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori

According to The Boot Room and journalist Graeme Bailey, AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori remains a target for Postecoglou’s side after he was linked at the very start of January.

AC Milan's FikayoTomoriand Slovan Bratislava's Idjessi Metoko react

It is believed that Spurs are considering a January bid for Tomori, but face competition from Juve yet again – who’ve tabled an offer to sign the former Chelsea player on a season-long loan with an obligation to buy set at around £21 million.

The Old Lady may fall short, though, as other reports suggest Tomori commands a price tag of around £25 million.

Tottenham are said to be “big fans” of the 27-year-old homegrown centre-back, and they were actually linked with an audacious swap deal for him involving Emerson Royal during Antonio Conte’s days in charge (Calciomercato Web).

MLS Power Rankings: Inter Miami unbeaten no longer, Vancouver Whitecaps continue to excel, Atlanta United and LA Galaxy tumble

Who's hot, who's not? GOAL ranks all 30 teams across Major League Soccer

Matchday 10 was a chaotic weekend of unexpected results.
FC Dallas scored three unanswered in the final 30 minutes of their match against Inter Miami to defeat the Herons, ending their unbeaten start to the MLS campaign. Without Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets or Jordi Alba in the XI, they fell apart.

Among the best in the East, though, FC Cincinnati continued their fine form with yet another victory as Kevin Denkey's brace led them to a big win over Sporting Kansas City. Charlotte FC, meanwhile, were blanked and stunned by the New England Revolution on the road as star forward Wilfried Zaha ranted on social media about the match after.

Atlanta United's woes continued as well, with the league's most high-profile spenders losing their third-straight game. They're not the only ones struggling, though.

The LA Galaxy's winless campaign continued, as the reigning champs were handily beaten by Phil Neville's Portland Timbers. Gregg Berhalter's Chicago Fire conceded SEVEN goals to Nashville SC on Saturday, too.

In the Western Conference, the Vancouver Whitecaps battered Minnesota United in a clash between the top-3 in the conference, with the Canadian side really impressing to begin the season. Real Salt Lake impressed in a big victory over San Diego FC, as Diego Luna net a brace to lead the club to three points.

There were spurts of brilliance, especially with the pace of Joseph Paintsil on the flank, but nothing was, or is, really working.

New manager Ronny Deila unexpectedly looks out of his depth on the touchline, while Atlanta seemingly cannot figure out how to orchestrate their attack or maintain a defensive shape. Dominic Solanke, Wilson Odobert, Cristian Romero, James Maddison, Destiny Udogie, Guglielmo Vicario, Timo Werner, Brennan Johnson and Radu Dragusin are all set to miss Tottenham’s clash away to Brentford on Sunday, with Postecoglou in disbelief over their bad luck with injuries this season.

“Every time I’ve seen the light at the end of the tunnel, it’s usually been an oncoming train,” said Postecoglou on Tottenham’s player availability concerns.

“We’ve obviously got a big week, but we play Villa in the cup, and then we’ve got a clean week to Manchester United (on February 16) and that’s the week all of them are sort of scheduled to start training.

“To have a full week of training with those guys available leading into the Man United game, I think it is a little bit of a point for us to relaunch our campaign, particularly in the league, but then we have real big games of consequence in the cups coming around as well.

“I mean, that’s why I’m trying to manage the minutes of the guys we have available because we don’t want to lose anyone else.”

In botched attempts to reinforce the squad recently, Randal Kolo Muani snubbed a move to Tottenham in favour of Juventus, while Bayern Munich starlet Mathys Tel also rejected Spurs’ advances.

Tottenham now appear to have adopted a scattergun approach to the final 72 hours of the window, as many names are linked with moves to north London.

Tottenham make contact over signing Man City forward James McAtee

According to journalist Graeme Bailey, writing for The Boot Room, Man City attacking midfielder James McAtee is now a target for the Lilywhites.

Manchester City'sJamesMcAteecelebrates after the match

Tottenham have made contact over signing McAtee from City in the last 36 hours, and while it is stated that Pep Guardiola’s side are not entertaining the prospect of him leaving, what is clear is that the homegrown Englishman could tick many boxes for Postecoglou.

McAtee can play a variety of roles in the final third and may be worth a punt considering he’s hardly featured for the Sky Blues this campaign. The 22-year-old is still young with plenty of resale value, so if Levy were to pursue a permanent deal, it would also make sense from a business perspective.

The former Sheffield United star’s price tag stands at around £25m, and Guardiola has previously branded McAtee a “special” player.

“I’m so happy for him, he’s a special player,” said Guardiola after McAtee’s hat-trick against Salford City in the FA Cup.

“Making a hat-trick is not easy. He started a bit flat, I would say, but after, he has an incredible sense in front of the goal. He has the right tempo, changed the rhythm to score and [I’m] really happy for him.”

Awful Palmer repeat: Man City at risk of losing a "top talent" this week

It’s already been a very busy January transfer window for Manchester City, who’ve spent around £125m so far.

New signings Abdukodir Khusanov and Omar Marmoush both debuted from the start against Chelsea on Saturday, a 3-1 victory for the Premier League champions, while Vitor Reis was an unused substitute, hoping to make his own debut at Arsenal on Sunday.

However, could the Citizens lose one of their most highly-rated young players, with the player in question frustrated by a lack of game time and opportunities?

Man City youngster potentially on the move

As reported by Florian Plettenberg and Patrick Berge of Sky Sports Deutschland, Bayer Leverkusen are “trying to secure” Manchester City youngster James McAtee.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Die Werkself have “submitted” a loan offer with an option to buy worth £25m included, but James Ducker of the Telegraph believes this has been rejected by Man City, with Pep Guardiola having “made it clear” he has no intention of letting McAtee leave this month.

James Holland of TEAMtalk also adds that, following Kyle Walker’s move to AC Milan, the Sky Blues already have the maximum number of senior players out on loan, six, so one would have to be recalled or sold permanently for this deal to be ratified.

So, why is it so important that Man City keep hold of McAtee?

Why Man City must keep James McAtee this January

The midfielder joined the Citizens’ academy at the age of 11, most well known for his time at Sheffield United, spending two seasons on loan at the Blades, helping them gain promotion from the EFL Championship in 2023, before a rather miserable relegation campaign last time round.

Nevertheless, he still scored 14 goals in 75 appearances in South Yorkshire, his first-ever Premier League goal a stunning winner against Brentford in December 2023.

This season, he’s returned to Man City, but has seen just 507 minutes of action, his four starts coming in the Community Shield, EFL Cup and FA Cup, scoring a first-ever senior hat-trick against Salford earlier this month.

A week later, he bagged his maiden Premier League goal for the Sky Blues, this coming in the 6-0 demolition of Ipswich.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout described McAtee as a “top talent”, praising his “electric pace”, dribbling ability and “above-average decision-making in the final third”, underlining why Guardiola is reluctant to let the 22-year-old depart.

However, Sam Lee of the Athletic reports that he’s frustrated by his “limited opportunities”, so could he push for a move this month?

A Cole Palmer repeat for Man City

As outlined by Mark Ogden of ESPN, Man City have made an enormous amount of money from selling academy players in recent times.

Just last summer, Liam Delap (£15m), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£20m) and Tommy Doyle (£4.3m) all departed, following on from James Trafford (£15m), Shea Charles (£10m), Morgan Rogers (£1m), Roméo Lavia (£10.5m) and Samuel Edozie (£10m), who’ve also been sold since the summer of 2022; that’s without even mentioning Jadon Sancho or Michael Olise.

The majority of these players are now thriving at other clubs, Delap, Lavia and Rogers in particular have become high-quality Premier League regulars, but none of these remotely sting as much as the decision to allow Cole Palmer to join Chelsea, for a reported £42.5m.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Palmer was rarely given an opportunity by Guardiola, despite scoring in both the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup mere days before moving to Chelsea, hence why the club may be experiencing a sense of déjà vu when it comes to McAtee.

So, let’s see how Palmer and McAtee’s Man City careers compare.

As outlined by the table, Palmer was actually given significantly more opportunities by Guardiola than McAtee ever has, making almost double the number of appearances and seeing more than twice as many minutes.

This is despite the fact that, statistically, McAtee’s output is actually far more efficient, averaging a goal every 125 minutes.

Thus, this all underlines that McAtee, who is the same age as Palmer, the pair born a mere five months apart, should feel totally justified in his feelings that he deserves first-team football.

If that isn’t going to come at Man City, and all available evidence suggests it won’t, he should look to move, yet another sale the Sky Blues will surely live to rue.

Man Utd now eyeing PL "monster" as alternative to Champions League striker

An attacking “monster” is reportedly wanted by Manchester United in the summer transfer window as Ruben Amorim looks to add more firepower to his squad.

Man Utd transfer news

It looks as though a new striker could be near the top of the Red Devils’ wishlist once this season reaches its conclusion, with a lack of elite quality in that area at present.

In fact, United have even been linked with a sensational swoop for Bayern Munich and England superstar Harry Kane this summer, who was constantly backed to move to Old Trafford during his Tottenham days.

Harry Kane for Bayern Munich

Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Hugo Larsson is another reported target for the Red Devils in the coming months, with the 20-year-old a player with a big future in the game. United are believed to be willing to spend £50m on the Swede amid interest from other top clubs.

On the flip side, there are players being linked with moves away from Old Trafford, including Rasmus Hojlund, who may still be young, but is struggling to make a positive impression under Amorim. United could be willing to make a £30m loss on him by moving him on at the end of the campaign.

Man Utd want to sign attacking "monster"

According to a report from Spain, Manchester United are interested in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer window.

The Englishman is among a host of targets for the Red Devils at the end of the season, as United seek to bolster their attack, with Canada star Jonathan David also among their targets amid his fine performances for Lille, who are into the last-16 round of the Champions League.

Everton's DominicCalvert-Lewincelebrates scoring their first goal

Calvert-Lewin has been a top striker for some time now, being seen as an option for United in the past and being lauded by football talent scout Jacek Kulig as a “monster” of a player:

At 27, the Everton man is also still young enough to come in and not drift past his peak too quickly, which is an error the Red Devils have made far too often in the past, having brought in the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani beyond their prime years.

Calvert-Lewin has shown over many years that he can be a force in the Premier League, which is an obvious positive to bringing him in, meaning he shouldn’t take any time to hit the ground running, combining pace, hold-up play and reliable finishing.

That said, the one big concern surrounding the £100,000-a-week attacker is his injury record, with constant absences coming his way during his time at Everton – so much so that the Toffees have considered selling him at different times.
