"Ruthless" Bielsa could reward Jamie Shackleton with second Leeds chance

Trouble could be brewing at Elland Road after talks of a potential exit for Pablo Hernandez have emerged. The midfielder didn’t take Marcelo Bielsa’s decision to substitute him off during their Leicester clash very well. Following his outburst, he was left out of the Leeds side that faced Crystal Palace, despite Bielsa confirming he is fully fit.

Gabriel Agbonlahor spoke to Football Insider about this situation and feels that it would not be surprising if the manager opted to sell Hernandez because of his behaviour.

“If you cross Bielsa it looks like he will get rid of you like he got rid of Jansson,” the former Premier League player said. “Hopefully that’s not the case with Hernandez because he’s a good player and he can add to their team. But from what we’ve seen, we’ve seen a ruthless manager.”

What axing Hernandez could mean for Leeds

Should Bielsa go down this route and teach Hernandez a lesson, it will be a very abrupt wake up call for the rest of the squad. Indeed, the Argentinian very much has a no-nonsense approach when it comes to player attitudes and performances. With Leeds not living up to expectations at the moment, Bielsa has already shown he will make cut-throat decisions to ensure his side wins.

One decision he made was to drop Jamie Shackleton, who has rapidly rose into the limelight and won the hearts of the fans. He is currently out injured, but should Bielsa axe Hernandez, there’s space for the 21-year-old to return to the action and prove himself.

The rising star, currently earning £15,000 per week on his current contract, was hauled off the pitch at half-time against Leicester and was left out completely for the Palace clash. However, Shackleton did show glimpses of his attacking threat against Aston Villa. According to Sofascore, he completed 100% of his attempted crosses and made one key pass. Additionally, he contributed to the defence by putting in two interceptions and one tackle.

The work rate is definitely there to be admired and should he be given a second chance to prove himself, he won’t let Bielsa down this time round.

Sunderland: Phil Smith claims that Scott Fraser transfer is unlikely to happen

Sunderland Echo writer Phil Smith has touched on Sunderland’s interest in Scott Fraser, saying that a deal is now unlikely to go through.

Ahead of a third straight season in League One, Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson is seeking to build a squad that could push for an automatic promotion to the Championship. The 52-year-old has already made some significant signings this summer, bringing in Bailey Wright and Aiden O’Brien, whilst Tom Flanagan signed a new deal to remain at the club.

Following those arrivals, interest in Fraser has also been reported in the last few weeks after the 25-year-old netted five goals and supplied 11 assists in 30 League One appearances for Burton Albion last season.

Fraser, who had spent the last two seasons with Burton Albion, opted to turn down a new contract at the Pirelli Stadium this summer and move on to a new chapter in his career, but the prospects of a move to Sunderland have now seemingly been rubbished by Smith.

“The impression I was left with was that it was highly unlikely after the salary cap vote, ” Smith told Sunderland Echo in a latest Q&A with fans.“I don’t think you could say any deal is completely dead, though, until the player opts to sign for another club.“All these players are having to reassess their options as a result of the vote.“I’m not talking specifically about Fraser here, but look at the situation from the point of view of these free agents more generally.“Your League One options are now limited, as you probably can’t the wage you deserve from the top clubs at that level.“There might be better financial offers in the Championship, but will you get the playing time you need?“Is going abroad now an option? Is it worth waiting a little longer to see if the PFA arbitration has any impact?“I don’t think a deal for Fraser is likely, though I agree entirely that his creativity would bring some welcome variety to Sunderland’s options.“As I said, though, you’re never quite sure until they (I’d put Luke Garbutt in this category too) make a final decision.“Neither look likely at the moment, though.”Matched with Sunderland’s interest, the Daily Record reported that Stoke manager Michael O’Neill is keen on the Scot, whilst League One newcomers Hull City were also linked with the 25-year-old.

Fraser could be among a number of many Sunderland targets that they may struggle to afford, given the salary cap and financial restraints put on the club.

The Scottish footballer will potentially make a move to the Championship, highlighting why the Black Cats need to get back into the top two divisions in order to be better placed to attract the players that they want.

Spurs fans loving update on Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic

As Jose Mourinho continues to look towards rebuilding this Tottenham squad, one man who is being linked with a switch to north London, is Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

The Croatia international fell out of favour at the Camp Nou last season, finding himself in and out of the team on a regular basis – in the Catalan giants’ La Liga campaign, he completed the full 90 minutes on just seven occasions.

Now, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness) have claimed that Spurs are insisting on bringing Rakitic to the Premier League this summer, and that it’s Mourinho who is really driving the interest in the midfielder.

And after hearing about the news on the 32-year-old, Spurs fans flooded to Twitter to share their reactions.

Some Spurs fans talked up Rakitic’s winning mentality, and how that could be important for Mourinho’s side.

With multiple trophies to his name, and having experienced Champions League football for a number of years now, Rakitic could give Spurs a huge amount of top-level, title-winning experience.

Despite the lack of full 90 minutes last season, he did still play in 42 games across all competitions for Barcelona, so he certainly hasn’t completely lost it.

If Spurs are looking for a midfield general, then the Croatia star may be that man.

Revealed: The referees Man United will want to see more of in future

Every football supporter has that one referee who they hate seeing in the middle of the pitch when their team is playing.

Referees get a lot of criticism, often rightly and sometimes not, but the introduction of the likes of VAR and goalline technology in recent years has helped them make fewer mistakes. Kind of.

Man United, especially during their glory years, didn’t have much problem with officials. Fergie time and almost winning a football match every week ensured there wasn’t much to moan about when it came to the men in the middle – but there remains a handful of referees who they won’t enjoy seeing when they’re playing.

TOFFS’ recent referee report has revealed the Red Devils’ luckiest and unluckiest referees from the last 10 years in the Premier League, and some may be surprised to see Michael Oliver up there as the club’s unluckiest official, with him overseeing just 11 Man United victories from 28 games he’s adjudicated, with a win percentage of under 40%. Neil Swarbrick and Martin Atkinson are also up there.

Lee Probert is Man United’s luckiest referee from the last decade, with 75% of the Man United games he’s officiated ended in a Red Devils victory.

And judging by the results below, United players need to improve their behaviour whenever Mike Dean is in the middle…

Phil Hay names four Leeds players that could go out on loan

Leeds United haven’t done all that much in the transfer window so far, but one thing they have been proactive with is getting loan moves for their young stars.

Ryan Edmondson and Kun Temenuzhkov have already departed the club on a temporary basis, and there could be a few more U23 stars that follow in their footsteps.

We’ve already heard of Huddersfield’s interest in Robbie Gotts after Carlos Corberan took charge at the John Smith’s Stadium, and Phil Hay believes three others could be headed out alongside Gotts.

What’s been said then?

The journalist answered fans’ questions in his column on The Athletic, and one supporter was quite keen to find out what will happen to some of United’s young stars this season in terms of being loaned out.

The reporter gave a detailed reply, naming four youngsters he thinks could go out on loan for some more gametime.

“Yes, it’s likely that other under-23s will go on loan. Bielsa, in his first two years, was resistant to loans because he thought the youngsters were better off staying and training with him, regardless of whether they were playing,” He wrote

“But there’s been a shift in attitude there and players like Robbie Gotts, Alfie McCalmont, Jordan Stevens, Leif Davis — I can see some of them signing new deals and then heading out.”

Should be more

The departure of Corberan has left a real void in how the U23s are going to be handled going forward at Leeds, with it previously being stated that the Spaniard was adept at shadowing Bielsa’s tactics to prepare these lads for the first team.

With Leeds now being a Premier League side with plenty of money to spend it will be a lot harder for these youngsters to break into the side, and although Hay has named four that could leave on loan, we think that there should be even more than that headed out on a temporary basis.

It’s been over a year since fans were clamouring for Mateusz Bogusz to get a first-team chance, and he still hasn’t gotten a decent run in the side, while another player that has been spoken highly of in Bryce Hosannah is getting to the age where a bit of first-team action is paramount to his development.

Newcastle United: Fans reminisce over Nolberto Solano masterclass at Anfield

After Nolberto Solano left Newcastle United in 2007 as part of the Sam Allardyce clean out, supporters never really got a chance to take in just how class he was for the Magpies – with numerous fans taking that opportunity now after being reminded of a masterclass at Anfield.

Allan Saint-Maximin’s hamstring injury has had the Newcastle fanbase pondering who they should play on the left-hand side in place of the Frenchman, with some suggesting a tactical switch around, while one supporter simply floated the idea of inserting someone like Christian Atsu to fill the void – but it’s likely all of them wish they could turn back the clock and put Solano there.

The Peruvian established himself as a real favourite at St. James’ Park, partially due to his affinity with scoring iconic long-range efforts – with the former Aston Villa man going on to make 295 appearances in a black and white jersey, scoring 48 goals and assisting 11 others, as per Transfermarkt.

As a result, supporters have flocked to hail the former player on Twitter due to a clip re-emerging of him putting on a showcase away to Liverpool – here’s what they had to say.

Newcastle fans furious at Pete Graves tweet

A recent tweet from Sky Sports’ Pete Graves has angered a lot of Newcastle United fans this week.

The Magpies correspondent responded to one supporter asking why there wasn’t any coverage about the northeast outfit taking payment for next season’s season tickets.

Graves responded with a light-hearted joke, but it hasn’t gone down well with some sections of the St James’ Park faithful.

Currently, their prospective £300m takeover is still in the hands of the Premier League – as it has been for nearly two months now, which has led to growing frustrations.

Graves believes that this is also the reason behind the club taking money for next term.

Many supporters hammered Sky Sports for their lack of coverage, claiming that the takeover was no excuse for lack of coverage on such a matter.

Whilst others lambasted the situation as “shameful” as well as “laughable”.

Think you’re a big Magpies fan? Can you name these former players by looking at their careers? Go on, give it a go…

There were plenty of Magpies fans who took aim at Ashley as well as the current board at the club, which is hardly a surprise given how poorly the Sports Direct mogul has run the club during his 13-year tenure.

There were also a number of United supporters who pondered the influence of the takeover and how it could affect things as many believe they are due a refund.

One member of the Magpies faithful even suggested that the takeover isn’t happening which is why the club appears to be continuing as normal.

Crystal Palace fans react as Christian Benteke hints at an exit from Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Christian Benteke hinted at a potential exit from Selhurst Park in January. The 28-year-old – who became the Eagles’ club-record signing when they paid £27m for his services – has netted just four goals in his last 60 appearances for the south Londoners.

Having lost his place in Palace’s starting XI to Jordan Ayew this term, Benteke revealed to Belgian outlet La Derniere Heure that he will have to “think about the January transfer window” as he aims to secure a spot in Roberto Martinez’s squad for the European Championships.

“I also have to think about the January transfer window. I will give it some thought and I’ll see what can be done.”

The former Liverpool man’s comments came after he scored twice for Belgium in their 6-1 win over Cyprus, and his revelation has sparked a reaction from a lot of Palace fans on Twitter.

One supporter said that Benteke is “not good enough” to compete in the Premier League, whereas another fan said “let him go” after calling the forward a “shambles”.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Aston Villa fans respond to Jonathan Kodjia transfer suggestion

According to Sporx, Turkish giants Besiktas are open to tabling a £2.6m offer for Aston Villa forward Jonathan Kodjia as the January transfer window looms.

To suggest that the 30-year-old has found it difficult to break into Dean Smith’s starting XI during the 2019/20 campaign would be a slight understatement.

The striker has only played 20 minutes of Premier League football, whilst he was again unused against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

And there are a selection of Villa fans who would be more than happy to accept the relatively low offer for the centre-forward.

That is not an opinion shared by everyone, though, with some of the supporters believing that the bid is far too low.

There was also a fan who claimed that his club should actually keep hold of Kodjia because the offer is so low that it would hardly be worth it.

In the modern day, £2.6m for a player operating in the Premier League is very, very low. However, it is difficult to imagine that Kodjia will be used on too many occasions moving forward, particularly considering Villa’s recent improvement, which was further illustrated by Sunday’s point at Old Trafford.

What’s more, the forward will be out of contract next summer.

Meanwhile, a number of Villa fans recently showed their delight when reacting to a piece of huge news from the club regarding a key figure.

Everton fans react as Patrick Boyland delivers diving statistics

Everton star Richarlison has taken a lot of heat this season over diving claim.

Against Tottenham Hotspur last week, the Brazilian was seen to take a tumble from a tackle from Serge Aurier late on. However, angles showed that there was no contact from the Spurs man, as he only intercepted the ball.

This was also not the first time this has happened. On the opening weekend, Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas hit out at Richarlison for diving from a challenge with van Aanholt. In this circumstance, the 22-year-old was not booked, and he wasn’t during the Spurs fixture either.

In fact, as shown by The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, Richarlison has not received one yellow card for simulation in English football.

In fact, Sadio Mane, Raheem Sterling and Dele Alli all have three, whilst Wilfred Zaha leads the way with four cautions for diving.

After the revelation of the eye-opening statistic, Everton fans have taken to Twitter to offer their thoughts.

Here’s what the Toffees faithful have had to say…
