Liverpool Could Ditch Thiago For £70m ‘Crown Jewel’

Liverpool are interested in Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, having just plucked Alexis Mac Allister from the Seagulls' ranks.

That's according to the Telegraph, who claim that while Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United lead the charge for the Ecuadorian talent, Jurgen Klopp's Reds could enter the race.

Albion will demand more than £70m for their 21-year-old enforcer, with the Gunners failing with a bid of that value in January – with his club unwilling to sell at the season's midpoint. Previous reports stipulate it could well cost as much as £80m.

Caicedo penned a new deal at the Amex earlier this year, but this is not expected to dissuade his mounting pile of suitors, and while Liverpool will seek prudence in the market this summer, a signing of his calibre could be too sweet to resist.

How good is Moises Caicedo?

Only last season, the £60k-per-week Caicedo plied his trade out on loan in the Jupiler Pro League before earning a winter recall and starting Brighton's closing eight matches of the Premier League campaign, scoring one goal and supplying one assist.

He has replicated his direct return this year, starting 34 times in the league, and now stands as one of the most robust and unwavering midfielders in the division, and the interest from the division's top outfits is unequivocally warranted.

For Liverpool, he is exactly the kind of energetic and unflinching midfielder Klopp needs to rekindle the former verve, with the Reds falling by the wayside this term and finishing fifth, now facing a campaign in the Europa League.

Described as Ecuador's "crown jewel" by historian Enrico Castro-Montes, the 21-year-old ranks among the top 6% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, as well as the top 15% for attempted passes, the top 13% for rate of tackles and the top 11% for rate of interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.

While he boasts a somewhat different skill set to Liverpool's pass master, Thiago Alcantara, he could be the perfect heir to return the Anfield centre to its more industrious roots.

Thiago, for all of his flair and elegance, is incessantly tethered to the medical department and is out of contract in one year's time. Indeed, at 32-years-old Klopp will no doubt be seeking a successor. The German could well find that in Caicedo, a brute capable of easily displacing Liverpool's number 6.

The £200k-per-week Spaniard ranks among the top 3% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues for attempted passes, the top 4% for progressive passes, the top 4% for rate of tackles and the top 11% for rate of interceptions, illustrating the impact Caicedo could make, with Thiago heralded as "a special player" by teammate Andy Robertson.

Caicedo, who has been dubbed "terrific" by South American football expert Tim Vickery, has been riding the crest of a wave with the Seagulls this season and has led them to their first-ever European campaign with a sixth-place finish, and while Albion are on the up, the allure of playing a central role in the resurgence on Merseyside could leave Liverpool with an imperious new midfield enforcer.

Spurs Manager Situation Will Take More Twists And Turns

Tottenham Hotspur will have to 'tread carefully' in their hunt for a new manager amid links to Arne Slot and need to be careful as they eye up bringing in Antonio Conte's successor, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest news involving Arne Slot?

According to Sky Sports News, Feyenoord boss Slot is said to have elected to stay at his current employers despite interest from the Lilywhites in appointing him.

The 44-year-old spoke about his situation in a recent interview, saying: "I have been hearing a lot of rumours going around about other clubs' interest in me. Although I am thankful my wish is to stay at Feyenoord and continue working on what we created last year." "There is not – and there has not – been transfer conversation and yesterday's meeting [with Feyenoord] was exclusively for an extension.

Football Insider report that the Dutchman has a reported £6 million release clause in his contract, though there has not been a 'breakthrough' in recent discussions between Slot and Tottenham.

Renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on the state of play surrounding Slot on Twitter, stating: "Arne Slot will sign a new contract at Feyenoord very soon. The agreement has been reached during yesterday’s meeting and it will be sealed soon. Slot decision won’t change. He’s set to stay and won’t join Tottenham."

Slot has done a stellar job at Feyenoord this season and led his side to the Eredivisie title for only the second time since the turn of the millennium.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones has cited the past example of Nuno Espirito Santo and how he was reportedly out of the running then came back into consideration before taking the job as a reason why it's important to be 'careful' regarding Spurs' manager search.

Jones told FFC: "I think Slot's vision has been sold, as far as I understand, there are people definitely on board with it. We're not at the end of discussions yet and a final appointment being made and we always have to tread carefully with Tottenham because of what's happened in the past. I mean, if, if you think of what happened when Nuno Espirito Santo was appointed as manager, I mean, he'd been ruled out by all intents and purposes weeks before that, and then came back into the running, so I've always careful around Tottenham and where I where I commit."

Why have Tottenham Hotspur taken so long to appoint a new boss?

Hiring managers in work is always difficult, though even sounding out coaches not in employment comes with its complications, none more so that Julian Nagelsmann, who at one point looked to be the preferred candidate for the role.

Sky Sports News reported earlier this month that Nagelsmann will not be appointed as Tottenham's new manager and was never in the running on a serious level, which contrasts with claims made by The Times, who claim talks will resume with the former Bayern Munich man and he wants assurances over the sporting director position in N17.

Bayern's Julian Nagelsmann

Appointing a new boss is a hard task to complete in any walk of life and it wouldn't be surprising if there was a few twists and turns left to go at Tottenham as they search for Conte's replacement.

For now, at least, all focus at the club will be on their trip to Elland Road to face Leeds United on Sunday as they try to salvage some form of continental qualification heading into 2023/24.

Wolves enter the race to sign David Carmo

Wolves are reportedly the leading candidates to sign highly-rated Braga centre-back David Carmo in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Centre-back needed?

Romain Saiss is leaving Molineux this summer, which will leave Bruno Lage with fewer defensive options ahead of next season.

With Conor Coady’s future also potentially up in the air amid interest from Everton, there is no doubt that a new centre-back has to be one of Wolves’ transfer priorities in the coming weeks and months.

An exciting new rumour is now doing the rounds in that respect.

The Latest: Wolves could have Carmo edge

According to O Jogo [via Sport Witness], Wolves are the ‘latest’ club to enter the race to sign Braga defender Carmo this summer, and they have made an approach for the Portuguese gem.

The report stated that the 22-year-old ‘fulfils the demanded requirements’ from Lage, and that the Old Gold could now ‘take the lead’ in the battle ahead of fellow Premier League clubs Liverpool and Manchester United.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398117″]

The Verdict: Ideal summer signing

Carmo could be a superb prospective signing for Wolves ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, with the youngster hailed as a ‘fantastic’ player by his manager Carlos Carvalhal.

He averaged 3.4 successful aerial duels per game across five Europa League appearances this season, along with an incredible 6.2 clearances per match. Across all competitions in 2021/22 he won 2.8 headers per game, which would put him second in Lage’s squad ahead of the likes of towering 6 foot 5 centre-back Max Kilman (2.2).

Carmo would come to Molineux as an immediate first-team solution and also a long-term acquisition, possibly making Wolves even harder to break down, having boasted the best defensive record of any team outside the top four in the most recent Premier League campaign.

Leeds and Burnley lawsuit on Everton

Finance expert Kieran Maguire has now revealed some significant news involving Everton.

The Lowdown: Leeds and Burnley compensation

As shared by iNews, both Leeds United and Burnley are now seeking £200m in compensation in order to try and offset the advantage that the Goodison Park outfit have received through alleged overspending.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-5/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is understood that representatives from the two clubs have formally requested that the Premier League order them not to delete any relevant information with regards to their accounts.

The Latest: Maguire shares latest

Speaking to Football Insider, Maguire has revealed that both Leeds and Burnley have decided to pursue a compensation claim regardless of which team were to get relegated to the Championship:

“There are some precedents which need to be considered.

“There was the Carlos Tevez case in 2005. West Ham agreed an out-of-court settlement with Sheffield United. That was nothing to do with FFP because it didn’t exist then.

“But we have recently had a settlement between the owners of Derby County and Middlesbrough with regards to FFP breaches.

“You can understand why Burnley and Leeds are doing this. My understanding is that they have decided to pursue this regardless of who got relegated.”

The Verdict: Significant

The fact that Leeds and Burnley are pursuing this, despite the Clarets going down and Leeds and the Toffees staying up, is significant.

The claim could have easily been thought of in bitter taste, but it looks as if the Blues could still have a potential problem on their hands given Leeds’ involvement even after staying up.

If the claim is successful, then this may alter their transfer plans significantly for the summer, and they will not want to be restricted spending-wise again, after only spending a mere £1.7m last summer.

Nonetheless, the Merseyside club will still be confident that they have not broken any rules, and will continue with their plans as normal for now.

Leeds: Romano drops Kristensen update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on reported Leeds United transfer target Rasmus Kristensen.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Italian journalist revealed that, following reports of Jesse Marsch’s interest in a move for the Red Bull Salzburg right-back this summer, Victor Orta has now prepared an opening offer for the 24-year-old.

The transfer insider goes on to state that negotiations between the Premier League side and Austrian champions are currently ongoing concerning a fee for the defender, while personal terms with the Denmark international are not thought to be an issue.

In his tweet, Romano said: “Leeds have an opening bid ready for Rasmus Kristensen. Talks ongoing with RB Salzburg, negotiations are concrete. Personal terms not an issue – Leeds want Kristensen after Aaronson deal completed with RB Salzburg.”

Supporters will love Romano’s claim

Considering how exciting a talent Kristensen evidently is, in addition to the fact that both Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas are both facing lengthy spells on the sidelines due to injury, Romano’s suggestion that Leeds have already made a move to sign the Salzburg right-back is sure to be an update the Elland Road faithful will love.

Indeed, over his 29 Austrian Bundesliga fixtures this season, the £13.5m-rated Dane proved just how much of an attacking threat he can be on the right of a backline, bagging seven goals, providing four assists and creating seven big chances, in addition to taking an average of 1.4 shots, making 1.2 key passes and completing 1.3 dribbles per game.

The £14k-per-week full-back also returned impressive defensive metrics, helping Matthias Jaissle’s side keep 13 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.3 tackles, 1.1 interceptions, 1.4 clearances and winning 5.7 duels – at a success rate of 60% – per appearance.

These returns saw the 24-year-old average a quite remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.31, not only ranking him as his club’s second-best player in the division but also as the fourth-best in the Bundesliga as a whole.

As such, should Orta manage to get a deal over the line for Kristensen in the coming weeks, it would very much appear as if the sporting director will have secured a considerable upgrade on Ayling – who scored two goals, registered two assists and averaged a SofaScore match rating of just 6.61 over 26 Premier League appearances this season – ahead of the Whites’ 2022/23 campaign.

Aston Villa suffer blow in Eriksen pursuit

Aston Villa are said to be interested in signing Brentford midfielder Christian Eriksen, whose six-month contract expires in the summer.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from Birmingham Mail, who claimed that the 30-year-old’s future is to be decided in the coming weeks, with Villa Park named as a potential destination for the Denmark international.

Villa manager Steven Gerrard is reportedly looking to make further signings, following Villa’s £17m procurement of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.

However, Villa may be left with egg on their face in their attempts to sign the former Inter and Tottenham star.

According to a report from BBC, Brentford manager Thomas Frank is “convinced” that Eriksen will stay with the Bees beyond this summer.

In Thursday’s news conference, the 48-year-old said (as per BBC Sport): “I know I am optimistic but I also picked up the phone and said, ‘Hey, do you want to come to Brentford?’

“No-one thought about that six months ago. I would love to say 100 per cent, but I am convinced there is a good chance he can wear the Brentford shirt.”Frank claimed that the situation surrounding Eriksen is win-win for the west London club, saying: “Either he signs with us and everyone is going to be happy and the fans will build a statue of him outside the stadium in two or three years’ time, or he goes to a bigger level and fans will applaud him and we will all say, ‘Thank you for this time, go forward’.”Gerrard risking disaster over EriksenGiven Gerrard’s intent in strengthening the Villa squad, he will surely be gutted over the latest developments surrounding the 30-year-old, who has registered five attacking returns in the form of one goal and four assists in ten appearances for Brentford this season. After his cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, there were doubts as to whether Eriksen would ever play again, let alone return to his scintillating best. He has done exactly that, registering a match average of 7.29 passes into the final third, with 2.8 key passes per game.Eriksen’s 4.69 shot-creating actions are greater than Villa’s primary playmaker Emi Buendia, who has maintained a respectable 3.68 shot-creating actions per match. It’s worth noting that the Argentine falters in comparison to the aforementioned metrics from the Danish star, averaging 3.08 passes into the final third and 2.24 key passes per game. The £13.5m-rated Eriksen, who has been described as a “magician” by his former Tottenham team-mate Dele Alli, would most certainly enhance Villa’s attacking potency with his creativity. However, with Frank confident that he can keep him at Brentford, it’s a move which looks to be in doubt for Gerrard’s side, which would represent a disastrous missed opportunity for the 41-year-old.In other news – “Gerrard wants”: John Percy drops big Villa transfer claim, supporters will be buzzing

Spurs: Paratici must axe Ndombele

Tanguy Ndombele is set to return to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the current campaign.

What’s the word?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that a Spurs source has revealed that, despite Lyon possessing a £50m option to buy the loanee central midfielder in the summer transfer window, the Ligue 1 side have no intention of activating this clause – meaning the 25-year-old will return to north London at the end of the season.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-latest-news-updates-transfer-rumours-gossip-spurs-thfc-conte-paratici” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

However, the report goes on to state that the France international does not feature in Antonio Conte’s first-team plans, before suggesting that Ndombele will be forced to train alone while Fabio Paratici attempts to secure the midfielder a permanent move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Paratici must axe Ndombele

Considering just how poor Ndombele has been ever since his record-breaking £63m move to north London back in the summer of 2019, it would indeed appear an extremely wise move for Paratici to do everything in his power to move the midfielder onto pastures new at the end of the current campaign.

Despite showing brief flashes of ability over his 33 Premier League appearances last season – scoring three goals, registering two assists and creating five big chances for his teammates, returns that saw the 25-year-old average a SofaScore match rating of 6.90 – it quickly became clear that, following Conte’s appointment in the Spurs dugout last November, the Frenchman’s time in north London was all but over.

Indeed, the £31.5m-rated man featured in just nine league games this term – only three of which came under the Italian – during which the midfielder failed to impress, scoring one goal, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, as well as making an average of a mere 0.1 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 25.6 passes and winning 3.6 duels per fixture.

These returns saw the £120k-per-week flop who John Wenham dubbed “laughable” and Scott Saunders labelled “anonymous” average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.58, ranking him as Spurs’ second-worst performer in the top flight of English football.

As such, it is easy to see that Ndombele’s departure this summer would be a move that best suits all parties, with it being made clear in no uncertain terms that the Frenchman has no future under Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur regime.

Johnson can usurp James at Leeds

Brennan Johnson could be a better option than Daniel James at Leeds United, according to transfer insider Dean Jones…

What’s the word?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT this week, the Eurosport journalist claimed that the Nottingham Forest sensation has a higher ceiling than both the Whites’ club-record signing and reported summer target Ryan Kent.

Jones said: “In terms of where their ceiling is, I think that Brennan Johnson is as high as both those players. I think he could probably shine brighter than both of them long-term too.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

The Yorkshire giants have long held an interest in the Rangers star, and with Raphinha likely to depart Elland Road in the off-season, a new wide option could well be needed.

Johnson has also been linked with a move to Leeds in recent months, with the Daily Mail reporting that the club would prepare a bid for the Forest gem if they maintain their place in the Premier League. The Reds value the 20-year-old dynamo at around £20m.

James upgrade

Indeed, Johnson could be the man for Leeds manager Jesse Marsch, as James has not enjoyed the best of debut seasons in west Yorkshire.

After costing around £30m from Manchester United, there was a lot of anticipation and excitement as the Whites finally got their man, some 18 months after narrowly missing out on him in January 2019.

However, he has been quite disappointing, having only contributed four goals and five assists from 33 appearances and failing to find the net in his last 12 outings, via Transfermarkt.

In the past, his decision-making in the final third has been described as “headless” by Darren Bent and we’re still very much seeing signs of that, especially when he’s leading the line in the absence of injured Patrick Bamford.

Only two Leeds players to have started 20 or more league games this term have managed a poorer average rating than James (6.48). Six other Whites players have provided more key passes (0.8) than the Wales international, too.

His Dragons teammate could well be a massive upgrade, particularly in the long run. For Steve Cooper’s promotion-chasing Forest, Johnson has delivered a whopping 15 goals and ten assists across 45 appearances in the Championship this term, averaging 1.3 key passes per outing.

That’s over double the returns of James during his final season at Swansea City, where his form caught the eye of Manchester United.

Once dubbed an “unbelievable player” by his former Forest manager Sabri Lamouchi and “special” by ex-teammate Glen Murray, Johnson could be the ideal signing for Leeds this summer.

On the above evidence, there is a lot to suggest that the 20-year-old would be a way better choice than James heading into 2022/23.

Tchouameni/Liverpool transfer latest

Monaco are prepared to cash in on midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, who is one of Liverpool’s main summer transfer targets, according to a fresh update.

The Lowdown: Tchouameni links galore

The Reds haven’t signed a massive number of players in recent years but those who have come in have generally made a huge impact, such as Thiago and Luis Diaz.

Tchouameni is being hotly tipped to move to Anfield this summer, having emerged as a hugely exciting prospect for Monaco and France.

The midfielder has caught the eye with his dominant all-round displays, averaging 2.9 interceptions, 2.5 tackles and 2.3 successful aerial duels per game and also scoring three Ligue 1 goals this season.

The Latest: Monaco could cash in on Tchouameni

According to Football Insider, a requirement source has informed them that Tchouameni is one of Liverpool’s main transfer targets in the summer window, with the Reds having registered their interest in the 22-year-old.

Monaco are ‘ready to cash in’ at the end of the season, with a fee of ‘over £50million’ enough to prise him away from the Stade Louis II.

The Verdict: Enormous prospect

It really does look as though Liverpool are pushing hard to sign the 22-year-old, with Jurgen Klopp clearly seeing midfield as an area where reinforcements are required.

Fulham youngster Fabio Carvalho is already coming in and, if the Reds can land him from Monaco, Tchouameni could prove to be one of the most exciting pieces of business in years, adding an extra dimension in the middle of the park.

He has been hailed as ‘extraordinary’ by France team-mate Paul Pogba, and as the aforementioned statistics suggest, he seems to possess the technical brilliance and brute physical strength to take the Premier League by storm.

Tottenham: German source make Hofmann claim

German sources have now shared a big update on Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Borussia Monchengladbach star Jonas Hofmann.

The Lowdown: Hofmann on the move?

The Premier League top-four chasers have been linked with a move for one of Monchengladbach’s most crucial players in recent months.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte wants to make new additions this summer and has allegedly earmarked signings for many positions, including further forward (The Telegraph).

Sport Bild (via Sport Witness), sharing news in early March, name-dropped Spurs as an interested party to sign Hofmann who has been a ‘figurehead’ and crucial in-form player under Adi Hütter this season.

However, the 29-year-old’s deal expires in 2023 with no sign of an extension, throwing his future at the club into disrepute.

The Latest: German sources share Hofmann update…

Now, Sport Bild (via Sport Witness) have again shared some news on Spurs’ interest in Hofmann as the Lilywhites now make contact.

As Spurs regularly approach Monchengladbach over the attacker, according to this report, it is believed that the Bundesliga side will green-light his exit in the event of a suitable bid.

The Verdict: Make the move?

Given Hofmann’s contract situation, transfer chief Fabio Paratici may well be in a strong negotiating position to force their hand and ease the German side into accepting a lower price tag.

The international winger would be worth the hassle, especially going by his previous plaudits from big names and form over 2021/2022.

According to WhoScored, he’s racked up the most goals and assists combined domestically out of anyone in the Monchengladbach side whilst also reigning superior in terms of shots and key passes per 90.

If that wasn’t enough, Hofmann has also averaged their highest match rating in the Bundesliga, leaving little wonder Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp once called him ‘extraordinary’ and ‘perfect’ (via Borussia Dortmund reporter and Buzz 09 founder Sandra Goldschmidt).

If Paratici can seal his signing for Conte, there is little doubting he could add something.
