Man Utd links to "special" young manager are front page news in Europe

A major European newspaper claims that a "special" manager is being talked up as Manchester United's potential next boss after Erik ten Hag.

Erik ten Hag under pressure at Man Utd

United's current boss finds himself under enormous pressure to keep his job beyond the summer, with his side continuing to struggle this season. They are now languishing in sixth place and 12 points adrift of Aston Villa in fourth, with Champions League qualification looking close to impossible.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it clear that he is going to be ruthless since becoming part owner of the Red Devils, and it looks as though he is already considering potential candidates to replace Ten Hag if things don't drastically improve.

Impressive Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna has been linked with coming in, guiding his current team to within touching distance of promotion from the Championship to the Premier League this season. The 37-year-old is not only a big talent, but he also has ties with United, managing the Under-18s and also being assistant manager for a period in the past.

Former Brighton and Chelsea manager Graham Potter is also seen as an option to take over at Old Trafford soon, with journalist Ben Jacobs saying: "One is Graham Potter, who couldn't handle the Chelsea dressing room for various reasons, perhaps some not in his control, but is still highly thought of after his time at Brighton. INEOS liked Potter with a view to Nice long before the investment was completed at Manchester United, and that's why he's been linked."

It remains to be seen what decision will be made with Ten Hag – Ratcliffe could yet decide that he is the right man for the job if the rest of the season goes well – but another name has now been thrown into the mix.

Man Utd links to "special" manager heating up

According to a front page report from Gazzetta dello Sport [via Sport Witness], Manchester United see Bologna manager Thiago Motta as an option to replace the Dutchman in the near future, and the links are gathering pace in Italy.

It does look as though there is more hype than anything surrounding the update however, with the report admitting that no concrete interest from the Red Devils has emerged and it could just be a case of using a huge club's name to drum up interest elsewhere.

Should Motta become a genuine managerial option for United this summer, or even before then, he would be an exciting candidate, considering what an excellent job he has done at Bologna to date.

The 41-year-old has been hailed as a "special" manager by journalist James Horncastle, and his team sit fourth in Serie A, as they close in on a place in next season's Champions League. A recent report has claimed that internal talks have happened within United, no doubt involving Ratcliffe, and he is one of Europe's most exciting young bosses currently.

Motta prefers to play a possession-based 4-2-3-1 formation, with a report on his tactics from the Coaches' Voice adding the system "delivers more fluidity, despite still working to an overall structure", and he would represent a vibrant choice to come in and be an upgrade on Ten Hag.

"Hang on" – Agbonlahor left bemused after Daniel Levy decision at Tottenham

TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has had his say after hearing about a decision from chairman Daniel Levy at Tottenham this week.

The north Londoners are now playing a brand of football more in-keeping with Spurs' philosophies, and it's a style of play which has captured the hearts of supporters throughout 2023/2024.

Tottenham's imperious form going forward has catapulted them into a top-four battle with Unai Emery's Aston Villa, with both sides set to face off against each other this weekend in what will be an all-important game in the race for Champions League qualification.

There is plenty to be optimistic about at N17 right now, so much so that Levy and the Spurs board made the unpopular call to raise season ticket prices for next season by six per cent.

This was met with backlash from supporters, with the official fans group releasing a statement expressing their serious disappointment.

“We oppose any Season Ticket increase and the removal or reduction of Senior concessions, both of which are also opposed by the Fan Advisory Board," wrote the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters’ Trust.

“THST Board members met with the club on February 21 when we were presented with the Season Ticket proposals for the first time. During this meeting, we disagreed on several areas and as a result of our input, changes were made.

“We do, however, remain hugely disappointed to see Season Tickets increase by six per cent.”

While optimism surrounds Tottenham's season, with their appeal growing to Europe's finest talents like Lucas Bergvall as well, a six per cent increase in season ticket costs could price some supporters out of match days.

Agbonlahor bemused after Levy decision to hike Tottenham ticket prices

That is echoed by talkSPORT's Agbonlahor, with Levy criticised for raising ticket costs at Tottenham despite their serious improvement under Postecoglou. The Englishman says that the north Londoners need to start "winning trophies" before hiking prices.

“What I don’t like is money is tough for people out there, I’ve got friends in London who can’t even get on the property ladder, it’s ridiculous prices in London,” the former Aston Villa striker said.

Aston Villa's former forward Gabby Agbonlahor.

“You go there and do your food shop, ridiculous prices. The bills are going up. People use their spare money, die-hard fans, to go and watch games and you’re putting the prices up. This might price certain people out of their budget.

“Like you say, such a rich club not winning any trophies as well, yes the football is better, it’s exciting football. But hang on, maybe start winning some trophies Spurs before you start throwing up a six per cent rise.”

Why "rising star" Festy Ebosele is a perfect signing for Leeds United

Leeds United came from a goal down to beat Leicester City 3-1 in a top-of-the-table clash in the Championship on Friday. The comeback was ignited by Connor Roberts, a player brought to the club by Daniel Farke in January, before Archie Gray and Patrick Bamford found the net.

Roberts arrived on loan from Burnley until the end of the season and may have just lent Leeds a significant hand in their efforts to reach the Premier League, but his long-term future is unclear.

As you can see in the table above, he's had to be content with fairly brief appearances from the bench so far as Farke continues to favour 17-year-old Gray at right-back. And based on the latest Leeds transfer news, the German may only view Roberts as a short-term solution.

Leeds now battle Spurs for Ebosele

According to HITC Football, Leeds are interested in signing Festy Ebosele from Serie A club Udinese. A number of clubs are watching his progress closely, including Premier League sides Spurs, Everton, West Ham and Leeds' promotion rivals Southampton.

Ebosele is particularly attractive to top-flight clubs given that he qualifies as a homegrown player following his time at Derby County. Udinese's sister club Watford are also admirers, but are the lowest-ranking side in the race.

"Rising star" Ebosele is a powerful runner

After joining Derby from the Bray Wanderers academy in 2018, Ebosele went on to make 41 first-team appearances over four years at Pride Park and then joined Udinese on a free transfer.

He's played 43 games for the Italian outfit to date, including 25 this season, and his tally of 19 league starts shows that he's made himself a key player. The 21-year-old has predictably caught the attention of his international bosses, and earned a senior debut for the Republic of Ireland in a 2-0 defeat to France in the autumn.

While Ebosele has been operating as a right wing-back, he's only managed one goal contribution this term (an assist in a 1-0 win away win over AC Milan in November). Instead, his biggest weapon has been his dribbling – he ranks fourth in the league for successful take-ons (fourth) and ninth for carries into the penalty area (31). Often, the only way for opponents to stop him reaching dangerous areas is to bring him down, which is why he's in the top 10 for fouls drawn too (39).

Dubbed a "rising star" by journalist Ryan Kilbane in an article for Football Talent Scout, he could be an excellent addition for a newly-promoted Leeds this summer, allowing Gray to shift into a specialist midfield role and Roberts to find a permanent new home.

Advocaat’s £1.3m Rangers gem would’ve ease Sima injury woes

Glasgow Rangers form in 2024 has been simply stunning. The Ibrox side have won every single game they have played so far – scoring 24 goals across nine matches while conceding only four – and this is the form of champions-elect.

Of course, there is plenty of time for more twists and turns in the Premiership title race, but Philippe Clement’s side have all the momentum currently.

The Belgian manager has also had to cope without the services of Abdallah Sima, who was arguably one of the Gers' better performers during the first half of the season.

Abdallah Sima’s injury woes

The winger arrived on a season-long loan deal last summer as Michael Beale sought to bolster his attacking options having lost the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos.

The 22-year-old took time to make his mark, scoring only twice in the opening nine matches of the season, but an injury to Rabbi Matondo gave him the chance to cement his spot on the left flank, and he took it.

Abdallah Sima

Between the end of September and the start of January, Sima went on to score 13 goals and register two assists as the Light Blues secured progression from the Europa League group stages while winning the League Cup.

Disaster struck when he was on international duty at the recent Africa Cup of Nations competition, however. Sima was struck down with a thigh injury and Clement lamented that the player was going to be out “long term” in what was a significant blow for the youngster and the rest of the team.

The Gers went out and signed winger Oscar Cortes from RC Lens on a loan deal until the end of the season, and he could soon prove to be an adequate replacement for Sima.

Oscar Cortes could replace Abdallah Sima

The young Colombian has already made five appearances for the club, and it looks like an inspired signing by Clement, especially judging by his early impressions.

He grabbed an assist on his Scottish Cup debut against Ayr United, while his performance during the second half of the recent 3-1 win over Ross County was a joy to behold.

The 20-year-old was brought on for Matondo at the interval and spent the second half looking to open his account with the Ibrox side.

Indeed, Cortes took five shots in total, missed two big chances, played four key passes, and succeeded with one of his three dribble attempts during his 45-minute cameo.

Despite his efforts, he didn’t score or provide an assist, but his willingness to get involved with the majority of their attacks suggested he could be key in the title race.

The Gers will need all their experienced players to take the lead and help the youngsters over the coming months, especially with the club now in a proper title race.

Imagine then, if Clement could call on a former Rangers wizard instead of Cortes on the left wing? One who won two league titles during his six-year spell in Glasgow – Peter Lovenkrands.

How much Rangers paid for Peter Lovenkrands

Following another season of success for the Light Blues during 1999/00, Dick Advocaat sought to add some more talent to his already bulging squad in order to claim a third league crown in a row.

New arrivals included the likes of Kenny Miller, Bert Konterman and Fernando Ricksen, but it was a little-known Danish attacker who would capture the hearts of the Ibrox faithful over the next few years.

Peter Lovenkrands for Rangers

Lovenkrands cost Advocaat just £1.3m from Danish side Akademisk Boldklub and considering how much the club had splurged on players since the Dutchman took charge in 1998, this represented a wonderful bargain for a young talent who would only improve.

The Danish winger would go on to repay this fee a few times over with his goals and performances helping the club win plenty of major honours.

Peter Lovenkrands would thrive under Philippe Clement

The former Rangers' winger tended to use his blistering pace to surge past opposition defenders with ease, while he was also excellent in the penalty area, being able to score from a multitude of positions.

He failed to score in his maiden season in Glasgow but exploded onto the scene during the 2001/02 campaign.

He registered six goals and six assists, yet none was more important than his added-time winner against Celtic in the 2002 Scottish Cup final to secure a 3-2 win for the Light Blues.

Over the next four seasons, Lovenkrands would score 42 goals for the Gers while winning five major trophies, and he emerged as one of the finest attacking talents in the country.

His ability to float between a slot on the left flank or as a centre-forward allowed him to demonstrate his skills across the frontline and his versatility was arguably his biggest asset.

Clement would thus be able to play him over Cyriel Dessers, for example, or to replace Cortes out wide, while having a player who could score important goals.

The Dane ended up playing in the Premier League for Newcastle United and his former Magpie icon Alan Shearer lauded the winger, saying:

“I know he made a big impression when he first came here, and I thought he started well against Chelsea before he had the injury.

“He can play in a few positions, and has scored a couple of important goals. If we need him, hopefully he can do the same again.”

It’s fair to say that Lovenkrands is still fondly remembered at Ibrox, especially for his goals against Celtic, and the Gers desperately need someone who can give them that edge against their Old Firm rivals, having lost their two previous clashes against them this term.

Blast from the Past

Football FanCast's Blast from the Past series takes a trip down memory lane. Do any of your classic icons of days gone by fit into a modern-day starting XI?

In an ideal world, the former Denmark international would link up with the likes of Todd Cantwell and Fabio Silva to create a devastating attack.

Alas, supporters of a certain age can only dream of what damage Lovenkrands would do to Premiership defences across the country this season if he was in his prime.

Two Leeds United defender deals collapse on deadline day

Leeds United’s moves for two late January targets have now collapsed, in what is surely a blow to Daniel Farke's plans for the rest of the season.

Leeds transfer news

The Whites are yet to make a January signing for Farke despite seeing his options at the back shortened. The club decided to cut Djed Spence’s loan spell short at the beginning of the year, whereas Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough for the remainder of the campaign.

Another defender in Leo Hjelde sealed a permanent exit to Sunderland, leaving Farke with just Archie Gray, Sam Byram, Jamie Shackleton and Junior Firpo as his full-back options.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

That could soon be about to change, though, with Burnley’s Connor Roberts closing in on a temporary move to Elland Road to join Wales teammates Joe Rodon, Ethan Ampadu and Dan James.

However, a centre-back addition is also seemingly wanted by Leeds before the 11pm deadline, with Fabrizio Romano saying:

“Of course, a centre-back is needed at Leeds. They are looking for an opportunity there. The name is still unclear, but Leeds are still trying and looking for a chance there.”

Bournemouth’s Chris Mepham, Nottingham Forest’s Joe Worrall, Leicester City’s Harry Souttar and Everton’s Ben Godfrey have all been heavily linked to rival Rodon, Pascal Struijk, Liam Cooper and Charlie Cresswell at the back, but it looks as if a move for one is now off the cards completely.

Godfrey and Souttar deals both collapse

According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, Leeds’ move for Godfrey has now collapsed, with the defender happy to remain at Goodison Park.

“Ben Godfrey will be staying at Everton past the transfer deadline despite interest and offers from Leeds United and other clubs, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed Godfrey, 26, is happy to stay at Goodison Park after being restored to the side against Fulham on Tuesday and receiving assurances from manager Sean Dyche.

“Leeds United were one of the sides interested in taking the versatile defender away from Everton in the mid-season window – but that deal has now collapsed following extensive talks with the England international set to remain a Toffees player.”

That news has unfortunately been followed just a couple of hours later by reports that a potential deal for Souttar also has no chance, with the Yorkshire Evening Post's Joe Donnohue revealing as much on X: "Leeds' move for Leicester centre-back Harry Souttar appears to be off. The Foxes are unwilling to strengthen a promotion rival."

Former Norwich defender Ben Godfrey.

At one stage, Leeds were planning a second offer for Godfrey, who can play all across the backline, so this isn't ideal news for Farke, who clearly really wanted the Everton man in particular. The German managed Godfrey at Norwich City, with the defender helping the Canaries to two separate Championship title wins. He’s played more games under Farke than any other manager in his career, so a move could have made sense for all involved. Unfortunately, that won’t be the case, so it’ll be interesting to see if Leeds look at another centre-back alongside their swoop for Roberts.

Rodgers wants Joe Hart replaced at Celtic this summer

Ahead of the summer, Celtic have decisions to make on a number of players coming to the end of their contracts. One of those is Rocco Vata, the talented youngster who had looked set to leave Parkhead amid interest from Italy, only for the Hoops to open negotiations over a new deal. Celtic have made progress towards an agreement with the 18-year-old and an extension is now thought to be close.

The outlook is comparatively bleak when it comes to the future of midfielder David Turnbull, though. Speaking last month, Brendan Rodgers said he "won't lose sleep" over his refusal to pen fresh terms after unsuccessful talks last summer.

Intriguingly, there could be some upheaval in the goalkeeping ranks in Glasgow, with both Joe Hart and Scott Bain into their final six months. And it seems Rodgers is already adamant about what he wants to do with the former.

Celtic to bid farewell to Hart

According to Football Insider, Celtic will replace Hart as their first-choice goalkeeper ahead of next season. The Scottish Premiership leaders are "actively seeking" a new number one in their preparations for the summer transfer window.

Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Rodgers is apparently happy to keep Hart between the sticks for the remainder of the current campaign, but he's "eager" to replace him straight away, with the position marked out as the "top priority" for the off-season.

Champions League exposes Hart as Kelleher eyed

It's slightly surprising that Hart's exit is already considered an inevitability given the extent of his involvement this season. He's played 29 games so far, starting all but one match across all competitions – he was suspended for the league game against Motherwell at the end of September after picking up a red card versus Livingston.

There hasn't even been rotation for the cup games, with Hart donning the armband against Highland League side Buckie Thistle last weekend, but that would appear to reflect Rodgers' doubts about the strength of his backup options rather than any overwhelming confidence in Hart.

Indeed, while he's kept 11 clean sheets this term, he struggled in the group stages of the Champions League. Celtic conceded a joint-competition high of 15 goals, and while that isn't automatically a knock on the 'keeper – sometimes there's nothing they can do – Hart only faced a post-shot xG total of 13.3, which gave him the fifth-poorest shot-stopping record in the tournament. Rodgers will want somebody who can truly hold their own against the toughest opponents.

Celtic could land dream O'Riley replacement in £3m Bernardo rival

Speculation is rife regarding the future of Parkhead’s new talisman…

ByRobbie Walls Jan 25, 2024

Who could Celtic go out and get, then? Well, one possible name is Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher. It was reported this week that they're considering a move for the Irishman, who wants to leave Anfield, but they're banking on Liverpool first lowering their £20m demands. As much as Rodgers may view him as a solution to his problems, there's a feeling that no suitor will even come close to that valuation.

The Rondo: GOAL USA roundtable on Gio Reyna, Gregg Berhalter and USMNT's pre-Copa America June camp roster

Our writers debate what the USMNT will – and should – look like during the June camp, the striker spot, Gio Reyna and more.

U.S. men's national team boss Gregg Berhalter on Monday released his preliminary Copa America roster for a pair of June friendlies against Brazil and Colombia, with 27 players called into camp in advance of what will eventually be a 26-man roster for this summer's marquee event.

But questions loom.

Who slots into the XI to replace an injured Sergino Dest? Does Berhalter need to tweak his tactics and formation without his star defender? What about out-of-form stars such as Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun?

And then there's the roster itself: were the right choices made, and has anyone been snubbed?

All valid questions, and our GOAL US writers weigh in with the latest edition of…

Getty Images Who is the biggest snub from the June camp roster?

Tom Hindle: To be fair, I think Berhalter has got this mostly right. He’s kept the big guns around, and although there’s no obvious Dest replacement, Scally is a decent – if underwhelming – shout.

If anyone can feel aggrieved, it’s Auston Trusty. A Premier League center back, with 30 plus starts this season – albeit for statistically the worst defense in history – he certainly knows how to play against the best.

Respect where it's due to Miles Robinson and Cameron Carter-Vickers, but Trusty should sneak in over one of those guys. Still, as major issues go, we’re talking about fourth-string center backs.

Ryan Tolmich: There are two players that immediately come to mind: Trusty and Lennard Maloney.

Both logged big minutes in top leagues, and neither had their names called for this squad. Of the two, Trusty's slight is the toughest. Maloney has more experienced players ahead of him, while Trusty is very much part of a big battle for a centerback spot. Unfortunately for him, he was Berhalter's sixth choice in a five-horse race despite playing the most games at the highest level in the competition.

Overall, though, it's splitting hairs. The USMNT's fate won't be determined by players 23-26, even if there is plenty of reason to debate those spots.

Jacob Schneider: Someone has to be the odd one out here: Trusty has not been snubbed. Though he's a talented defender, being a part of the worst defense in Premier League history essentially puts you in a hole. Maloney, meanwhile, should be upset that Timmy Tillman has been called up ahead of him.

And the name that we have not been talking about – don't quite understand why – is Alejandro Zendejas. He's been lights-out in Mexico for Club America, arguably the most storied and talented franchise across North America.

The U.S. winger pool is deep, but things are bleak in terms of right-wing depth. With 26 players on the roster, was there really not room for someone like Zendejas in the attack?

AdvertisementGetty ImagesFolarin Balogun, Josh Sargent, Ricardo Pepi: Who do you start at striker?

TH: None of them? All of them?

Ask nine months ago, and it’s Balogun, pretty much without doubt. The dude can put the ball in the net, and banged in 20-plus in Ligue 1. Farmer’s league jokes aside, average strikers don’t accidentally hit those kinds of numbers. Today? It gets a bit more complicated, especially after Balogun's middling season.

It feels like Pepi had his moment two years ago, and hasn’t delivered since. Not quite convinced he’s all that – at least not yet. Form suggests that Sargent is the right choice, but he never made it happen in the Prem, either. On balance, you probably go with the guy who can do it at the highest level.

Pop Balogun up there, but I don’t think Sargent is too far behind.

JS: If Sargent is healthy, he's the pick. He's long been the most naturally talented striker in the U.S. pool. He has excelled in all situations for Norwich City this year, and at one point, had the most headed goals across the top-two divisions in England – even more than Erling Haaland.

Then again, you don't just casually score 20+ goals in Ligue 1. Balogun is a sensational striker, but his form is woeful, and he's lacking confidence.

Pepi is better suited to represent the U.S. at the Paris Olympic Games this summer. However, for Copa America, he will be able to provide an electric presence off the bench.

Berhalter should start the forward who can bag goals at the moment, and that's Sargent.

RT: It's conditional, isn't it?

It feels like it's between Balogun and Sargent, but the answer could be both. Sargent could be the guy against Bolivia and Panama, inferior teams that bunker down. Balogun could be the guy against Uruguay and some of the late-tournament heavy-hitters due to his pace and intelligence in making runs.

All of this depends on Sargent's health. If he's healthy, a split of the two is best for business.

Getty ImagesWithout Dest available, should Berhalter tweak his system?

TH: In theory, sure. In practice, probably not. Dest is a very good attacking full back, who has proved that he can deliver for the USMNT.

Yet he's not such a major loss that Berhalter – a manager so tactically inflexible it physically hurts – has to tear the whole thing apart. Injuries are always going to be a problem for national teams. And you can see why changes need to be made to account for missing superstars. France would have to change without Mbappe, Argentina without Messi, etc.

Not quite convinced that a pretty good full back doing his knee is worth scrapping your system. Then again, it might be fun for the manager to try something new – for once.

JS: If Joe Scally isn't your man, yes, change the system. If he is, no.

There's only one reason you'd tweak anything, and it would be to move Tim Weah to RWB in a back-five system with Antonee Robinson opposite.

It sure as hell would be fun to see, but the point of those two matches against Brazil and Colombia isn't to test things out. It's to nail everything down. The testing window was March, and that time has passed.

That said, the U.S. should tweak their front-three to move Christian Pulisic to the right side of the pitch if they do opt for a back-five. He has excelled there for Milan, and Haji Wright has more than earned a chance to start on the left with him.

RT: They're going to have to adjust, in some ways. No player can do what Dest does, which is going to change how the U.S. approaches the right-hand side. Weah's job is made easier by Dest's attacking skills and, without that, it'll all look different.
But a big formation tweak? Probably not. Berhalter has his ideas and style and, even without Dest, this is a team suited to them. No need to reinvent the wheel for one player, even if that wheel could use a bit of adjusting.

Getty ImagesWhich player needs the June camp most to impress?

TH: The logical answer here is Brendan Aaronson. A couple of years ago, it seemed he might be a crucial part of this team through 2026 and beyond.

This next month figures to be a good opportunity for him to get back on track, and show that he can compete for minutes among a squad that has approximately 56 attacking midfielders and no real wingers. But he’s probably not getting in this team.

Realistically, then, it’ll be Gio Reyna.

He didn’t get a kick at Forest, and he’s quite comfortably the most talented footballer Berhalter has at his disposal. He’s not going to be dropped altogether, but Reyna has to show he is at least sharp enough to earn a spot.

JS: There's two obvious answers: Matt Turner and Scally. The Nottingham Forest goalkeeper may truly be getting his last hoorah as the starting shotstopper at Copa America. He lost his starting spot at the club level, lost the support of their fans, and isn't even a consensus starter for the national team. With the likes of Patrick Schulte, Gaga Slonina and Diego Kochen all on the rise, Turner needs this June to cement his status.

Scally, meanwhile, has more expectations than anyone else in this camp. The assumption is he will start at right-back in place of the injured Dest, and as such, he has shoes unlike any other to fill. The Gladbach defender had a rough moment in the March international window against Jamaica, and was arguably slammed too much for it. However, it was a much-needed learning moment for the 21-year-old.

For someone who started 25 of 31 Bundesliga games for his club this season, he sure gets a lot of stick from USMNT fans. This June is his chance to respond.

RT: There's a clear answer here, and that's Scally. With Dest gone, Scally is next up and, thus far, hasn't shown he's ready. Scally is yet to have a true breakout USMNT performance, partly because his chances have been somewhat spread out.

He'll get his opportunity this summer and, if he seizes it, who knows what happens after the Copa? First, he'll need to prove that he's up for the challenge by performing against Colombia and Brazil. If he does that, he could earn Berhalter's trust and prevent any of the big tactical tweaks mentioned above.

Berhalter can also use Weston McKennie or Weah as a right-back but, the US will be better if Scally makes it so he doesn't have to.
