Arsenal "Exploring" Move For £53m-rated Gem, He’s Ozil 2.0

There could be a late surprise in store for Arsenal supporters before the end of deadline day, with reports indicating that the Gunners may not be done just yet in the transfer market, despite having already wrapped up four new signings so far this summer.

Will Arsenal make any deadline day signings?

According to VBet journalist, Hrach Khachatryan, the north London are believed to be "exploring" a potential temporary deal for Manchester City full-back, Joao Cancelo, with this coming amid prior claims earlier in the year that suggested Mikel Arteta would 'love' to sign the 29-year-old.

Read the latest Arsenal transfer news HERE…

Writing on Twitter, Khachatryan has claimed: "Arsenal are in contact with Joao Cancelo representatives. They are exploring option to loan him until the end of this season."

It would appear that Bayern Munich are also keen to bring the Portugal international back to Germany following his recent loan spell at the club, with La Liga giants Barcelona having thus far been unable to get a deal over the line for the versatile defender.

Would Joao Cancelo be a good signing for Arsenal?

With former City assistant Arteta having recruited both Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko from his previous employers last summer, it would be no surprise if the Spaniard was to pull off another raid on the Etihad outfit this time around in order to get Cancelo in the door.

Lauded as a "special talent" in the past by manager Pep Guardiola, the one-time Valencia full-back has somewhat fallen out of favour in Manchester after being shipped off to Bayern in January, although that should not take away from a player who not too long ago was arguably one of "the best attacking full backs in world football" – as per teammate Phil Foden.

Joao Cancelo

Such praise had come during a 2021/22 campaign that saw the £250k-per-week dynamo – who is valued at €60m (£53m) by CIES Football Observatory – finish with a stellar haul of ten assists from his defensive berth, showcasing the level of quality he can bring to Arteta's ranks.

To bring in arguably a "world-class" asset – as hailed by ex-Bayern boss Julian Nagelsmann – so late in the day would evoke memories of the signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid on deadline day back in 2013, with the former Germany international having also been a major marquee addition after joining on a club-record deal.

Although things ended in rather sour fashion for the now-retired magician as he was cast aside by Arteta prior to his exit from the Emirates in 2021, the playmaker was a true genius when in his pomp, notably contributing 79 assists in 254 games in all competitions during that lengthy stay in the capital.

Much like Ozil, Cancelo can also be a real difference-maker in the final third despite not being an attacker by trade, with the latter man simply "sensational" with regard to his "quality" in and around the opposition box, according to Foden.

As such, while it had looked to be a quiet end to the window for the Gunners, an already impressive summer could be capped off with an Ozil-esque, statement signing.

West Ham: Hammers Consider Late Bid For "Beastly" Star

Broadcast giant ESPN have shed light on West Ham United and their transfer plans with a claim involving Real Valladolid full-back Ivan Fresneda.

Who will West Ham sign?

The Irons and manager David Moyes have been very busy this last week as we approach the latter phase of this summer window.

West Ham have been attempting to wrap up deals for both Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus and Stuttgart defender Konstantinos Mavropanos, all the while plotting a move for Rennes star Jeremy Doku.

The east Londoners most recently confirmed midfielders Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse as official summer signings, and the latter player is delighted to have arrived at West Ham.

“I’m buzzing to be here at West Ham United. It’s great to be here and I’m looking forward to getting going,” said Ward-Prowse.

“From the outside looking in, this is a Club that has been on the rise for a number of years now and coming off the success in the UEFA Europa Conference League last year, you can feel there is real momentum around this Club. It’s great to be a part of it and I can’t wait to play my role in the games to come.

“When I think about my game, it is based on hard work, graft, and giving 100 per cent. West Ham United has always been a Club that has epitomises that."

Journalist Dean Jones has also said to GiveMeSport that West Ham could make as many as five major signings by deadline day on September 1, which comes as a very promising claim.

"We’re looking at a massive month ahead for the Hammers," claimed Jones.

They will sign five players and have to find a way to make this all add up so they have a much stronger squad."

It appears West Ham very much mean business as they attempt to back Moyes with key additions, though whether or not they get them is another matter.

The Hammers' transfer plans will be an interesting talk point over this final fortnight of the window and ESPN have now made an interesting claim on Fresneda of Valladolid.

The right-back, who is also being chased by both Chelsea and Barcelona, is said to have attracted West Ham this summer as well.

Indeed, the broadcast giant reported on Friday that Moyes' side have "have also considered a bid this summer" for Fresneda.

The highly-rated 18-year-old is deciding his future as a few top clubs chase his signature, though it is unclear whether West Ham will properly join the fray at this stage.

How good is Ivan Fresneda?

Ivan Fresneda

Fresneda, despite his tender age, featured regularly for Valladolid last term – amassing 22 La Liga appearances.

The exciting full-back is generating plenty of interest as a result and members of the media have recently praised his "beastly" crossing ability from out wide.

Pundits like Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig have also called Fresneda "class", having watched him regularly for Valladolid over the last 12 months.

ESPN also state his valuation is a meagre £6.8m-£8.5m, making him more-than affordable from a West Ham perspective.

Finding a middle-order finisher priority – Dassanayake

In the build-up to USA’s primary ICC tournament assignment for 2018, the World Cricket League Division Three, repairing a hole in the middle order has been put at the top of their coach Pubudu Dassanayake’s to-do list for the upcoming USA Cricket Combines. Dassayanake made his evaluations following a return from the CWI Super50 tournament in February in Antigua.”There are a couple of games we would have won pretty easily if we had played basic cricket,” Dassanyake told ESPNcricinfo. “It was disappointing to miss that but lots of positions were settled down and we just need to improve from there now. I think the batting order is pretty decent. It’s just a matter of one more batter in the middle order. That’s what I’m looking for at these combines.”Mainly, what we are missing in this order is a good finisher who can bat with the tail, bat to the end and change games. Of course, Mrunal [Patel] is capable and highly talented, but I want him to be more consistent and there is room for another batter if we find someone. If we have a good finisher, then I think we will have a very decent batting order.”USA won only one out of their eight matches overall, defeating only Leeward Islands by 59 runs. However, they squandered strong positions in three other games. The first came against Jamaica, who recovered from 170 for 8 to eventually win by 99 runs.Perhaps more frustrating for USA were the two blown opportunities against Kent. In the first match, USA slipped from 102 for 3 to 188 for 9 while chasing 216 and in the rematch, they had Kent at 51 for 6 but allowed them to recover to post 172 for 9 and USA were bowled out for 142 after a middle-order collapse.Dassanayake said that he was satisfied with the contributions from the top order after a rough start. The emergence of Jaskaran Malhotra on his debut tour was a positive for Dassanayake in particular. The opener finished as USA’s leading scorer with 277 runs, 12th on the list overall. There were also sporadic contributions from others: with half-centuries made by Sunny Sohal, Xavier Marshall, Roy Silva and captain Ibrahim Khaleel. However, Dassanayake said their inconsistency could be traced to readjusting from artificial wickets around the USA in mostly T20 competitions to turf wickets in the Super50 tournament, but said it was a problem that could be fixed.”The problem I see with them is getting used to US conditions a lot playing on concrete and artificial, and then playing lots of T20s where when the pressure is there, they are looking for that boundary rather than the single,” Dassanayake said. “But they have done it in their career before, it’s just [that] they’ve gone away from that system a bit since they have been in the US.”So it’s not going to be a big job for me to turn them around for 50-over cricket and playing on turf against good quality bowling. That’s what I really was looking at because it will be hard for me to get a youngster who don’t know those things. It’s just about putting them into a proper training programme and covering those things in the next six months. I’m confident in those top five guys. We just need one more good batter. The job is now very clear for me and even for the players for the next six months in what we need to do to dominate Division Three.”Though the batting was hit or miss in Antigua, USA’s bowlers shone brightly, led by the left-arm medium-pace duo of Elmore Hutchinson and Saurabh Netravalkar, and backed up by the superb left-arm spin of Nosthush Kenjige. Both Hutchinson and Netravalkar finished sixth overall in the tournament with 13 wickets each. While Hutchinson stood out for his economy rate of 3.65, Netravalkar bowled perhaps the more challenging spells that often went unrewarded, though he did take 4 for 45 in the last match against Jamaica.”I think the main thing Saurabh brought is his experience,” Dassanayake said. “He doesn’t have extra pace but he’s very consistent on hitting the good areas. More than anything, he’s one of the guys who really understood the tactical side well and implemented his own plans well. Ibrahim has his plans and Saurabh was one of the guys who really followed them, and Elmore bought into the plan and they stuck to it regardless of the situation. The key for both guys was consistency. [In] the spinners department, I think Nosh is really leading the pack.”With CPL-contracted Ali Khan missing the Super50 due to work commitments and the injured Jessy Singh to soon return from reconstructive knee surgery, USA’s fast bowling depth is exceptionally strong. Hammad Shahid, who excelled in the 2016 Auty Cup against Canada before suffering a knee injury ahead of last year’s WCL Division Three, is also waiting in the wings for a return. With others like Keshav Pabbisetty, who excelled for USA Under-19 last summer at the World Cup Qualifier in Toronto, also pushing for spots, Dassanayake said their fast bowling competition will be the backbone of overall team success going forward.”You never know when bowlers will break down or in the USA environment because of work commitments someone has to miss a tour,” he said. “So my plan is to build up a squad of 10-12 good fast bowlers and give them training programmes to do on their own year round plus get together three or four times to sharpen their skills. That’s the plan for what we want to build after the combine. I want them to have competition through the group and having a big group we won’t have any issues if someone gets injured.”When you go through the Associate world, fast bowlers are key. I know spinners dominate statistically in Associate tournaments, but if you have a good fast bowler, you can give lots of trouble to Associate batters and one of the reasons Afghanistan moved so quickly is that they had three good fast bowlers who bowled at 140kph plus. I think USA also is blessed with that, with a very good bunch of fast bowlers and we have to use them properly to get the best out of the whole squad.”USA Cricket recently announced that players currently in the national squad will be automatically included at the final USA squad trials in Houston this June at the conclusion of the regional combines throughout the spring. However, Dassanayake said he expected all of those players to attend the regional combines to bring the best competition out of other players trying to force their way into the team and build the best squad possible for tournaments late in the year, including Division Three, the Auty Cup series against Canada and the start of 2020 World T20 Qualifying, tentatively scheduled for August.”We always have to carry a third opener, there’s a middle-order vacancy,” he said. “It’s open to anyone but it’s just a matter of showing the improvement. We have seen guys before and now the guys in the last tour, but now for us to settle the order we need to see guys score under any conditions and under pressure. Those are the two big things I’m looking for and, of course, the consistency.”

Fast bowler Michael Neser tore through South Australia’s middle order to put Queensland in a strong position on day two at Adelaide Oval. The Bulls added just 16 runs on the second morning before being bowled out for 342 in their first innings. Redbacks quick Daniel Worrall picked up the last two wickets to finish with four for the innings.South Australia moved to 29 for 0 loss before losing three wickets for nine runs, with Brendan Doggett claiming both Jake Weatherald and Travis Head.Callum Ferguson and Jake Lehmann battled briefly before Neser took 4 for 1 in 3.1 overs to leave the Redbacks reeling at 7 for 89. Adam Zampa made a quick-fire 57 to try and salvage something from the wreck but Mitch Swepson put an end to that to hand Queensland a 180-run first innings lead.Left-arm seamer Nick Winter removed both Bulls openers in the second innings but the Redbacks have a huge mountain to climb to get back into the game.

Sheffield Wednesday Make Approach For Midfielder

Sheffield Wednesday have made a first move to sign Newcastle United’s Jeff Hendrick, however, the Owls aren’t the only side keen on the midfielder's services.

What’s the latest Sheffield Wednesday transfer news?

Wednesday and new manager Xisco Munoz have endured a frustrating start to the Championship season, with the club sitting rock bottom of the second tier and are currently the only club in the division without a single point.

The Owls take on Yorkshire rivals Leeds United at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon, but before then, the club have the chance to bolster their squad ahead of Friday evening’s transfer deadline.

So far, those at Hillsborough have brought in 10 new players with four from English clubs and the remaining six from France, Spain, Portugal and Italy respectively.

Di’Shon Bernard, Reece James, Bambo Diaby and Ashley Fletcher have been the domestic arrivals from Manchester United, Blackpool, Preston and Watford, and it looks as if the Owls are looking at another UK-based player in Hendrick.

According to Football Insider, Wednesday have made an approach to Newcastle and registered their interest in Hendrick.

They are thought to be lining up a bid, however, Championship rivals Leeds and West Brom are also named in the report alongside the Owls. Newcastle are willing to let the player go before the window slams shut, with Scottish side Aberdeen also keen on a loan move.

How much does Jeff Hendrick earn?

Hendrick reportedly earns around £40,000-a-week at St James’ Park and has been on the books with the Magpies since 2020. Before his spell with Newcastle, Hendrick was with Derby and Burnley, making more than 350 appearances combined for the two clubs.

Primarily a central midfielder who can also turn out on the right or in an attacking midfield role, Hendrick’s move to Newcastle hasn’t worked out, with the player just turning out on 27 occasions in black and white.

He spent last season out on loan with Reading in the second tier but couldn’t help the Royals avoid relegation, although he was praised by former manager Paul Ince, who described the player as someone who "trains like a demon".

“He trains like a demon every day. He is very professional and I like professional players and he is one you can trust. The thing about football ultimately is that you’ve got to have 11 players you can trust. Sometimes you don’t pick the players with the most talent but ones you can trust week in, week out and Jeff is one of those."

Should he move to Wednesday before tomorrow evening, Hendrick would provide Munoz with a versatile and experienced midfield option, making more than 250 appearances and contributing to 46 goals in the Championship.

It could be one to keep a close eye on over the next 24 hours, and it’ll be interesting to see if Wednesday look to make any further additions alongside the possible arrival of the Republic of Ireland international in what may prove to be a busy end to the window for the Owls.

Everton: Ancelotti signing has seen his value rise by 1600%

Everton, for all their financial blunders in recent memory, boast a keen history of plucking unknown youth talent and turning them into stars.

So often famed for their academy production, their recruitment throughout the lower leagues has proven stellar across the years too, with John Stones an outstanding example of such success.

Plucked from Barnsley in 2013, it took just three years before Manchester City came calling, unloading £47.5m to pry him from Merseyside and make him Pep Guardiola's star centre-back.

Given how his career has only gone from strength to strength, it must be remembered that it was the Toffees who first offered him that platform to thrive.

Now more than ever has this kind of talent identification been imperative for the Goodison Park outfit, who are being forced to watch their expenditure in fear of how FFP might sanction them. Such frustration fed into the summer transfer window, where they actually operated with a net profit despite making five signings.

However, there is a different star who has already begun staking his first team claim, who could be their next great success story to have begun their career in the lower leagues.

Who is actually playing well for Everton?

Although they are yet to claim their first Premier League win of the season, there has been a host of solid displays from Sean Dyche's men that have not claimed the merited result. Clashes with Fulham and Wolverhampton Wanderers spring to mind, where they recorded 2.73 and 1.34 expected goals respectively, but failed to score in 1-0 losses.

As such, Sofascore recognises that there have been some fine performers within the club despite what the league table shows.

jarrad-branthwaite

One such name is Jarrad Branthwaite, who finally seems set to earn a run in the starting side after an impressive loan tenure last year in the Netherlands.

Seeking to add some technical quality to his already impressive physique, his first few games back in England offer proof that the loan has earned success, with the 21-year-old maintaining a 7.10 average Sofascore rating.

This is a figure largely buoyed by his defensive excellence, although his 85% pass accuracy does mark an admirable return. Not to mention he has paired it with two interceptions, two tackles, three clearances and 8.5 ball recoveries per game, as per Sofascore.

In fact, his rating makes him the club's third-best performer thus far, starring as the joint-best for clearances made per game too. Already the youngster has announced himself as an integral figure within Dyche's setup.

sean-dyche

The former Burnley boss has been keen to praise the 6 foot 5 goliath, claiming before even handing him a start: "Jarrad has done well in pre-season but he missed a couple of weeks so he is still getting fit and sharp but we like what we have seen so far and we’re just getting used to him.”

The hope will be that he can continue this upward trajectory to emulate Stones' success, instead sticking around to lead Everton into a brighter future.

How much was Jarrad Branthwaite worth at Carlisle United?

As a relative unknown at the time of his move to Merseyside, he was unsurprisingly lowly rated.

Despite that, Football Transfers still handed the League Two defender a €1.1m (£940k) expected transfer valuation just before transferring, which has since skyrocketed.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Such success had been predicted way before his emergence, with his former manager and the man who gave him his debut at Carlisle United Steven Pressley, offering the following praise: "He had so many quality attributes to become a top player. On the back of that one game, I phoned the Director of Football to get him tied up on a longer-term contract, which we did within two or three days.

“From that moment on, he trained with the first team every day. I told people he was a future England international. Not once from when I gave him his debut did I ever consider leaving him out again, because I felt his performances had been so strong.

“The truth is, I think he has got everything. He can pass the ball almost equally as good with both feet. He’s a terrific footballer. And If he continues to develop, then, without doubt, he can be an England player.”

How much did Everton sign Jarrad Branthwaite for?

Despite that aforementioned valuation, given how highly rated he was for the Cumbrians, this was not an easy deal to make for Carlo Ancelotti.

Everton will offer Jarrad Branthwaite a new deal.

Although, with the financial might they commanded at the time, the Blues came to an agreement for his services, unloading a nominal £1m to bring him in after seeing a £500k bid rejected earlier in that 2020 January window.

As was the case with Stones, this has since proven to be a shrewd piece of business, and what they are set to make will surely blow that initial figure out of the water. Especially if clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United continue sniffing around.

What is Jarrad Branthwaite's market value now?

Evertonians will be keen to know just how much their prized young asset is worth given the fiscal mire they find themselves in, scrambling for pennies to put together a bid for anyone who might consider joining their relegation scrap.

Well, considering that PSV Eindhoven saw a £15m bid rejected, that should offer a fine starting point.

Jarrad Branthwaite (left) in action for PSV.

CIES Football Observatory whilst seeking to offer a more realistic figure, actually came to a similar conclusion with their value tool, suggesting the England U21 international is worth just €20m (£17m).

Although that marks an astronomical increase from the £1m they first paid, 1600% to be exact, it is still likely a far cry from what Dyche would possibly accept given his growing importance, natural ability, favourable nationality and incredible youth. As such it could even be argued that his true valuation sits much higher than this fee, although only his 52-year-old boss will know what that is.

Why is Jarrad Branthwaite worth that much?

Although his start to the season helps explain why his value has seen such a sharp increase, it is in fact that loan move to the Eredivisie that deserves the bulk of the praise, handing Branthwaite his first show of faith within senior football.

He would feature 27 times in the Dutch top flight last year, with his 6.97 average rating a fine return for someone so young. It is a testament to his quality that they were so keen to tie him down permanently, with his 87% pass accuracy and 3.4 clearances per game proving vital, via Sofascore.

The four main facets that uphold his valuation were mentioned just earlier, and should he continue to prove himself as a capable asset at the Premier League level, only he knows how high he could go.

Tottenham Leading The Race For "Outstanding" £197k-p/w Star

Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race for Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, but they are now at risk of missing out on him, a report has revealed.

What's the latest Tottenham transfer news?

Spurs have looked solid at the back in the Premier League so far this season, keeping clean sheets in their last two games, but they are still scouring the market for reinforcements in defence, having recently opened talks over a move for Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo.

In a recent report, it has been revealed that Eric Dier could be used as a makeweight in negotiations for the 25-year-old, given that he has fallen down the pecking order since the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, with Fulham keen on signing him.

Bayer Leverkusen's Edmond Tapsoba has also been targeted by the Lilywhites, but the Bundesliga club's asking price of £50m is proving to be prohibitive, and they have now cooled their interest, however, Postecoglou still has some other options in mind.

Lenglet has also been a target for Spurs for much of the summer, with it previously being reported the defender had agreed a move to north London, and there has now been an update on whether he could still join.

Is Clement Lenglet signing for Tottenham?

According to a report from Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), Tottenham are at the front of the queue for the Frenchman, following his loan spell last season, although Daniel Levy and co may have to move quickly if they are to get a deal over the line.

Although he is "looking for a way out" of Barcelona, the 28-year-old is growing frustrated by the lack of movement from his potential suitors, and he is now considering Saudi Arabia as a destination.

Barca are desperate to get rid of the centre-back, but his high wage packet has proven to be prohibitive all summer, as he is currently tied down to a £197k-per-week contract at the Camp Nou.

At the moment, Spurs' interest is "pending", but with Saudi Arabia now becoming a serious option, they will have to make their move sooner rather than later.

Tottenham still appear to be unwilling to make a concrete move for the France international, perhaps in light of his huge wage demands, but if they are able to get a deal over the line, there is evidence that he could be a solid back-up option for Postecoglou.

During his time on loan in north London last season, the former Lyon man was lauded as "outstanding" by members of the media, and he has a wealth of experience at the highest level, making 160 appearances for Barca, and 50 in the Champions League.

clement-lenglet

That said, Lenglet was unable to reach the heights expected of him in the 2022-23 campaign, averaging a SofaScore match rating of just 6.65 in the Premier League, the 20th-highest figure in an underachieving squad.

As such, Spurs may be better off instead pursuing a move for Adarabioyo, given that the 25-year-old performed far better in the Premier League last season, and he could be available in a swap deal, which would allow Postecoglou to get Dier off the wage bill in the process.

Phil Hay Shares Fresh Leeds Fitness Concern

Leeds United have a number of injured players at the moment and there could be a new concern at Elland Road, according to an update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.

Who is injured for Leeds?

The Whites have made a stuttering start to their Championship campaign, having arguably gone into the new season as one of the favourites to earn promotion to the Premier League, possessing plenty of quality in their squad.

On Saturday afternoon, Daniel Farke's side could only draw 0-0 at home to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday, however, giving the Owls their first point of the season in the process. It means that Leeds only have picked up six points from their opening five league games of 2023/24, winning just once in the process, which is undoubtedly a disappointing return.

While some of the performances haven't been good enough, the Whites do at least have the excuse of having numerous players sidelined through injury at the moment. Patrick Bamford is one of those, as he continues to struggle with fitness problems, while the likes of Sam Byram and Dan James are also absent currently alongside Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas.

Now, a new player appears to have picked up a fresh issue, following a key claim that has emerged from a reliable source.

archie-gray-transfer-gossip-leeds-united-farke-glen-kamara-rangers

Is Leeds youngster Archie Gray injured?

Taking to X, Hay confirmed that Archie Gray won't be heading off with England's Under-19s on international duty due to a 'minor fitness concern'.

"Archie Gray not going away with England's U19s. Leeds United withdrawing him from the squad because of a minor fitness concern. Tyring to manage his load and make sure he's fit for Millwall. Played in every game so far this season."

Gray, dubbed "sensational" against Ipswich Town recently, is a hugely exciting talent at Leeds who has already become a regular at the age of just 17, already starting five Championship matches this season. In that time, he has averaged 1.4 tackles per game in the competition and has enjoyed a 93.3% pass completion rate across two EFL Cup appearances, making his presence felt in the middle of the park.

This is, therefore, a worrying update for the Whites, with the hope being that the club are just being careful, not wanting him to potentially aggravate a minor issue while on international duty. If he can rest during the upcoming break from domestic action, he will hopefully be available for his side's next league game, which comes away to Millwall on September 17th.

Read the latest Leeds transfer news HERE…

Gray's quality as a player has been outlined by former Liverpool midfielder and current Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp, who once said of him:

"Archie Gray, 15 years of age, has travelled with the Leeds squad today. He is going to be a tremendous young player, from the famous Gray family."

To be such a regular player at just 17 years of age says so much about the teenager's potential as a footballer, with a combined 18 caps for England at youth team level further highlighting his pedigree and ceiling, having won one, eight and nine caps for the Three Lions' Under-15s, Under-16s and Under-18s respectively.

To see him miss a chunk of action would be another blow, but Hay's update does suggest that the injury shouldn't be anything too serious.

I didn't want the ball to come near me – Taylor

Ross Taylor has revealed he had not been able to pick up the swinging ball for “two or three years” before he had eye surgery 16 months ago

Andrew McGlashan in Dunedin06-Mar-2018Ross Taylor is seeing the ball well again. In every sense. Since returning from eye surgery just over a year ago he has played as well as at any stage of his career.Late in 2016, Taylor underwent an operation to remove a pterygium – a small benign growth – from his left eye. He was back in action at the end of January last year and has been racking up the runs: 408 at 81.60 in a small hand of five Tests and 1260 at 57.27 from 27 ODIs.It was not that his form prior to the surgery had fallen off a cliff – far from it; he hit his 16th Test century in his last innings before having the eye sorted – but he had noticed problems in the field, particularly during day-night ODIs, and admitted he had not been able to see the ball swinging when he batted.”It was a gradual thing so you didn’t notice it as much,” Taylor said. “It’s nice to see the ball swing and during day-night games, not to fear it. A lot of times in day-night games you didn’t want to the ball to come near you in the field and that’s not a great place to be when you are playing cricket.”In hindsight it would have been nice to have the operation two or three years earlier. At the same time, has it made a big difference? It’s hard to tell, you are older and wiser as well which makes a difference.”Seeing the ball swing from the hand, I hadn’t been able to see that for two or three years. But you are still human, get good balls and play poor shots so hopefully I can eliminate that as well.”Taylor remains a vital cog in New Zealand’s middle order. He scored a masterful century in the opening match against England at Seddon Park to help secure victory and New Zealand would probably have won in Wellington had they had his experience alongside Kane Williamson. He was forced to sit out with a quad injury sustained, Taylor says, after multiple blows to the leg in the preceding days, starting with the match in Hamilton, then training at Mount Maunganui before a third one from David Willey during the second match. He was run out in that game and said the injury played a part in him “turning like the titanic.”Since then he has done everything he can to recover, including undergoing acupuncture, and he is now ready to rejoin forces with Williamson. “It’s been an interesting week after the win in Hamilton,” he said.New Zealand actually made their best start of the series in Wellington, reaching 80 for 1 before collapsing against Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid. In the first two matches they had laboured to 28 for 3 and 34 for 2 off their opening 10 overs.”There’s no use going out there helter-skelter and being four for spit then playing catch-up all the time,” Taylor said. “Hopefully I contribute to that. We need to get off to a good start, set the platform and we know we are a good side when we have wickets in hand.”England’s death bowling from Chris Woakes and Tom Curran, which closed out the Wellington match, was impressive after luck went their way with the run-out of Mitchell Santner backing up. Woakes is England’s senior man in that role, but Eoin Morgan showed faith in Curran, who claimed 5 for 35 against Australia in Perth to secure another win, and he kept his nerve with his slower deliveries after Williamson had lofted him down the ground to reach his hundred.”I’ve done it a lot of times in training and I’ve had time to implement it in games at Surrey and a few games for England so it’s just about going out there and backing myself,” Curran said. “It’s very satisfying to see it come off.”Taylor was watching from the sidelines as Williamson couldn’t quite get New Zealand home and said it can often become a battle of wits at the end of an innings.”You don’t try to look too far ahead, try and have two or three boundary options. You can get a bit of a read on a bowler, that’s why you scout before the game but you can also get a feel during the match. At the end of the day the bowler still has to execute and you make them try and step away from their game plan.”New Zealand need to knock England off their stride in Dunedin. With Taylor’s return it is possible to see it happening.
