Rangers chasing in-demand Butland rival wanted by billionaire owned club

With Jon McLaughlin set to leave Ibrox as a free agent this summer, Rangers have reportedly turned their attention towards the English Championship in search of competition for Jack Butland.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have enjoyed a fantastic turnaround this season, with their Scottish Premiership title hopes going from a pipe dream to a near reality, and Butland has played a large part in that. So much so that the former Stoke City shot-stopper has attracted reported interest from the likes of Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

Abdallah Sima's Rangers future now in doubt as reporter shares new twist

Frustrating for Clement…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 11, 2024

As things stand, however, Butland remains a Rangers player and looks set to keep Philippe Clement's number one spot next season. The same can't be said for McLaughlin though, who is set to depart upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the season. The 36-year-old is yet to be called upon this season and is set to bow out after becoming somewhat of a forgotten man at Ibrox.

Jon McLaughlin

He's not the only one set to leave as a free agent either, with Borna Barisic, John Lundstram, Leon Balogun, Ryan Jack and Kemar Roofe all following suit in a busy few months in Scotland.

In need of reinforcements, the Gers have seemingly turned their attention towards England. According to FTBL, Rangers have joined the race to sign Tom Glover from Middlesbrough this summer in an attempt to hand Butland some competition at Ibrox.

The Boro goalkeeper has enjoyed an impressive Championship campaign and has attracted the interest of the Gers as well as Celtic, FC Copenhagen and Newcastle United as a result. With a busy race for his signature, Rangers will hope to put together a convincing pitch, but Newcastle owners PIF, valued at £320billion, may have something to say about that.

Glover's arrival would test Butland

A player who's stepped up in the absence of Seny Dieng at Middlesbrough this season, Glover can provide the test for Butland that McLaughlin never did as a backup at Ibrox. Still only 26-years-old too, the shot-stopper could get even better with a move to Scotland and eventually replace Butland, who is now in his thirties.

With that said, Rangers could kill two birds with one stone by welcoming the Boro man this summer in what would be an act of genius by all involved behind the scenes. It won't be an easy one to negotiate, however, with a Premier League riches in the mix as well as rivals Celtic. The fact that the Bhoys are also interested means that the Scottish Premiership title is even more important – such a triumph could be a vital point in Rangers' pitch to Glover.

For now, Glover remains a Middlesbrough player, but for how long for remains to be seen. Now arguably in the prime of his career, the Australian will have the ultimate decision to make this summer after making 12 Championship appearances and keeping two clean sheets under Michael Carrick so far in the current campaign.

Farke must drop 3/10 star if Leeds want to achieve play-off glory

Leeds United ended the regular Championship season with a whimper rather than a bang, allowing Ipswich Town to comfortably pick up that coveted second automatic spot after losing 2-1 to Southampton.

Daniel Farke's Whites almost looked resigned to their fate in the playoffs from minute one at Elland Road, with their fate becoming a reality when Adam Armstrong and Will Smallbone netted for Russell Martin's Saints to sour the mood even more in West Yorkshire.

Heading into the lottery of the playoffs, the German boss will need to make some key decisions when it comes to team selections which could even see this Whites ace – once described as "blistering" by talent scout Jacek Kulig – boldly dropped for the first leg away at Norwich City after underwhelming on the big stage against Southampton.

Daniel Farke

Georginio Rutter's performance v Saints in numbers

Georginio Rutter has struggled in recent weeks for Farke's faltering Leeds side, seen in his lackadaisical display in the 4-3 Middlesbrough away win in April with just seven accurate passes completed.

His display in the 2-1 home defeat yesterday was even worse, with the Frenchman way off the pace and out-of-sorts attempting to advance forward with his usual trickery and tenacity.

Only managing to better his accurate pass count from the enthralling Boro game by one versus Martin's pumped-up Saints, Rutter also only registered 28 touches of the ball against the determined visitors from the South Coast.

That was even less than goalkeeper Illan Meslier managed between the sticks for the anxious promotion hopefuls, with the unconvincing shot-stopper amassing six more at 34.

Hauled off just after the hour mark by an irritated Farke, Rutter would completely fail to test Alex McCarthy when still present on the Elland Road turf with zero shots on goal with the Saints defence also untroubled further by a lack of successful darting runs from the usually electric Frenchman.

Georginio Rutter

Handed out a low 3/10 rating after the dismal defeat by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth, who described Rutter as a 'shadow' of the player who has terrorised second-tier defences for fun this season, the 22-year-old could now find his spot taken up by a different body for the upcoming trip to Carrow Road.

The player who could replace Rutter

Despite putting in a lethal performance in front of goal by scoring Leeds' equaliser on the day, Farke could be tempted to reshuffle the pack and play Joel Piroe as an attacking midfielder for the showdown with the Canaries coming up.

The Leeds number seven shone against the Saints as a creator as well as a deadly finisher, accumulating three key passes in the match as well as firing home his only effort on McCarthy's net.

This could allow for Leeds to spring a surprise on David Wagner's Norwich and potentially start Mateo Joseph up top, giving the Whites hotshot an unbelievable chance to become a playoff hero at just 20 years of age.

There could also be the potential of Patrick Bamford being back fit for this crunch game away in Norfolk, having sat out the final day owing to a bruised knee.

Patrick Bamford

Yet, having never scored a goal in the Championship playoffs across his lengthy career to date, fortune could favour the bold with Piroe played behind Joseph in a major shakeup up-front.

Leeds could well end up facing Southampton again in the playoff final at Wembley, knowing they will have to be so much better across two legs against Norwich to stand a chance of joining Leicester City and Ipswich in the Premier League.

49ers could drop Meslier by signing "outstanding" EFL star for Leeds

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing a goalkeeper from the Championship.

  • Talks about disadvantages of a bloated squad
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After missing out on the Bundesliga title in the 2023-24 season, Bayern Munich are set to go all guns blazing to reclaim the trophy in the 2024-25 campaign under new manager Vincent Kompany. On the eve of their season opener, Kompany along with sporting director Max Eberl, addressed the media.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

When asked about the current squad, Eberl explained all the decisions they took in the ongoing summer transfer window including De Ligt's departure from the club as he joined Manchester United. The Bayern chief also took a dig at Premier League giants Chelsea while speaking on why it is important to have a curtailed squad.

  • WHAT MAX EBERL SAID

Speaking to reporters, Eberl said, "When you plan a squad, you obviously want to have a squad free of injuries. Inflating a squad is not good. We have a good squad size and we want to give our young players the opportunity to show what they can do at the top. Vini works very well with them, they can train at the top. Of course, it's not nice that two newcomers or returnees, Stani and Hiroki Ito, have been injured. At the moment it doesn't feel like we're reacting well.

"As a club, you also have to bring in money somewhere. You can go through the season like Chelsea with 44 players, but that becomes difficult for the coach to manage. Then you have to steal jersey numbers, but we don’t do that at FC Bayern."

When asked about De Ligt's transfer, the official added, "We have to make decisions where we feel we can have the greatest possible success. We made decisions together with Vincent Kompany. Matthijs de Ligt has delivered very consistent performances. We wanted an additional left-footer, which is why we brought in Hiroki Ito. That's squad planning, then we spend money, then you as a club have to earn money too. We spoke to the players very transparently and then made decisions and that's how we got the squad we have now."

Newcastle interested in signing 22-year-old "jewel" this summer

Newcastle United are interested in completing the signing of a defensive "jewel" this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies continue to be linked with lots of potential new signings at the end of the season, as PIF look to provide Eddie Howe with enough funds to make significant reinforcements.

Sporting CP centre-back Ousmane Diomande has jumped out as a primary target in recent weeks, with the 20-year-old Ivorian considered an ideal long-term partner for Sven Botman at the heart of Newcastle's defence. Contact has even reportedly been made with the defender, further suggesting that he could come to Tyneside in this summer.

Sporting centre-back Ousmane Diomande.

Elsewhere, Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher could depart Stamford Bridge in the coming months, and the Magpies are seen as contenders to sign him, battling Tottenham for his signature. There have also been links surrounding Brentford and England ace Ivan Toney should Howe decide that he wants to add to his attack.

Newcastle fans will also be hoping that a number of key players stay put rather than move elsewhere, and Callum Wilson could now reportedly remain at the club. That's partly due to Financial Fair Play and choosing not to bring in an expensive striker in his place.

Newcastle want defensive "jewel"

According to a new report from Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle are keen on signing Salernitana centre-back Lorenzo Pirola in the summer window.

The 22-year-old is described in the report as a "real jewel" of a player, and there is hope that the Magpies could snap him up for a fee of around €30m (£25.7m).

Pirola could be exactly the type of profile that Newcastle are looking for ahead of next season, in what is a crucial area of the pitch to add at least one new face. Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles are now both in their 30s, with the latter also currently out with a serious ACL injury, so they hardly represent the long-term picture at St James' Park.

Salernitana ace Pirola has experienced a tough season with his team, who sit bottom of Serie A by some distance, but he has still arguably stood out as one of their best players. He has averaged 3.2 clearances and 2.3 aerial duel wins per game in the competition, as well as winning 1.3 tackles per match, which is impressive considering he is one of the youngest members of the squad.

The fact that his side have been relegated to Serie B also means that could be expected to move on, and this could be beneficial for Newcastle, giving them an even better chance of signing him.

Freedman could strike gold by immediately axing £110k-p/w Newcastle trio

ByEthan Lamb Apr 26, 2024

Back in 2019, it was reported that both Manchester City and Manchester United were eyeing a move for Pirola, with the pair watching him for Italy at the Under-17 World Cup. This further shows his potential as a player, and why the Magpies should look to strike a deal for him.

Farke must drop 6/10 Leeds man who had fewer touches than Meslier v Boro

Leeds United certainly didn't do things the easy way at the Riverside Stadium last time out, just about getting over the line in the end in the barnstorming Championship contest against Middlesbrough to win 4-3.

The seven-goal thriller was an enthralling watch, if a nail-biting one for the Whites away masses, with Wilfried Gnonto and Crysencio Summerville the stars of the show against Michael Carrick's men by bagging three goals between them.

Away from the top performers in the back-and-forth contest, the likes of Ilia Gruev in the centre of the park notably underperformed and could now face the chop by Daniel Farke for the trip to Queens Park Rangers tonight.

Ilia Gruev's performance vs Boro in numbers

The Bulgarian midfielder has become a vital first-team presence in recent weeks, a reliable head in the centre of the park with 27 Championship appearances now tallied up for the campaign.

Yet, it was clear the 23-year-old was having an off-day against Carrick's men and could now be axed for the game at Loftus Road consequently.

Ilia Gruev

Operating as the only real holding midfielder on the night, with Farke boldly tweaking his lineup to set up in a 4-1-4-1 formation, the former Werder Bremen's man lacklustre performance was far more exposed.

Gruev would only accumulate 34 touches of the ball at the Riverside, a far cry away from the 65 touches he managed against Sunderland towards the start of April when the Whites limped to a 0-0 draw.

Even Illan Meslier, who was heavily criticised for his dire showing against Boro, managed more touches playing out from the back at 51 overall.

Illan Meslier

The Whites boss could well decide to freshen things up therefore, with Gruev handed out a second-rate 6/10 rating post-match by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth who described the ex-Werder Bremen man's first-half showing as lacking 'control'.

That was seen in his lack of touches, alongside the fact he failed to complete a single accurate cross in the 4-3 contest when venturing forward on occasion.

Farke will ponder who to bring in to fill the gap left behind the underperforming 23-year-old, with the experienced head of Glen Kamara potentially coming back into the first-team fold as one option.

The players who could replace Ilia Gruev

The ex-Rangers man looks the most likely candidate to fill in for Gruev if Farke does boldly axe the Whites number 44 for the trip to QPR, having been a steady if unspectacular presence this season for his German manager in the Championship.

Helping himself to four assists from the 37 games he has managed for the Whites this campaign so far, the Finland international will aim to pick up another if selected after being dropped for the last two league clashes.

Farke will need his troops to be on their A-Game regardless of who is picked or axed, with Loftus Road not the happiest hunting ground for Leeds in recent times having lost their last three visits to the Hoops in all competitions.

The Leeds boss could decide to move Archie Gray into that lone holding role if he sticks with the 4-1-4-1 look as well, but with Gray impressing at the Riverside with his forward-thinking runs, it would make more sense for Kamara – who is a naturally more reserved figure who can make teams tick – to line up in that spot.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke watches a Championship game.

It will, no doubt, be another rollercoaster ride of a match for Leeds in their hunt to win automatic promotion with QPR very much aiming to rain on the Whites parade.
