Nottinghamshire progress on higher Powerplay score after securing dramatic tie off last ball
George Dobell01-Oct-2020Leicestershire let a golden opportunity slip through their grasp – literally as well as figuratively – to allow Nottinghamshire to book their place in a Vitality T20 Blast semi-final against Lancashire. With 17 runs required from the final seven balls, it seemed Leicestershire had held their nerve in a thrilling East Midlands derby. But then Arron Lilley, fielding at midwicket, made a fearsome mess of an apparently simple piece of ground fielding to concede four to Samit Patel when there should have been a single.Worse was to follow. After Patel had struck a six in the final over, two were required from the final ball to send Nottinghamshire through. When Imad Wasim could only mistime the ball to mid-on, it looked as if he would be limited to a single. But Dieter Klein failed to pick up the ball cleanly and allowed it to pass him by.With the scores finishing level, the winner was to be decided by the side who had lost fewer wickets. But when that, too, was equal, the qualifier was the score after the Powerplay overs. It meant Nottinghamshire qualified for Finals DayPerhaps those fielding errors were the result of pressure, perhaps they were the result of the ball having become slippery in the dew but for a Leicestershire side who had fought back from an awful start with the bat and had held their nerve admirably with the ball it was a bitterly disappointing way to let the game slip away.”We got away with that,” Dan Christian, the Nottinghamshire captain, admitted to Sky afterwards. It was hard to disagree.False startBy managing just 22 runs in the Powerplay, Leicestershire gave themselves a mountain to climb in the rest of the game. Perhaps surprised by a surface that offered impressive bounce and carry, they managed only one run from the first over and none at all from the third. It represented the fourth worst Powerplay performance by a team batting first in the competition this season. It wasn’t just the lack of runs, either. Leicestershire also lost two wickets in those first six overs and another from the first ball of the seventh. At 22 for 3, having only managed two boundaries, it looked as if this could be a one-sided encounter. They did stage something of a comeback. Harry Swindells and Colin Ackermann put on 66 in eight overs, including a spell where they hit 46 off four overs, and by taking 97 off the final 10 overs of the innings, they did give themselves a chance. But, bearing in mind the manner in which the result was decided, that slow start came back to haunt them.Hanging in thereLeicestershire’s bowlers didn’t deserve to be on the wrong side of this result. They were immaculate almost throughout. With seven bowlers used and only one of them – the unfortunate Lilley, who went for 14 from his only one – proving expensive, it might be harsh to pick out any of them in a performance that was characterised by its strength as a unit. But Gavin Griffiths, who was on a hat-trick after Ben Duckett lost his leg stump missing a heave across the line and Chris Nash was brilliantly caught after chipping to mid-on, and Will Davis, who came on for the 14th over and nailed his slower-balls nervelessly, were especially impressive among the seamers.Ackerman enjoyed a fine all-round performance, too. After contributing 43 with the bat, he claimed three wickets with his waspish offbreaks including the apparently key ones of Joe Clarke, who looked in sublime touch before mishitting one to long off, and Tom Moores, who looked as if he were taking his side to victory before he lost his off stump to one that gripped just enough to beat his stroke. But non one bowled better than left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson. Despite bowling his first three overs in the Powerplay, the spell only cost 17 runs. He then returned for the 15th over with Nottinghamshire desperate for quick runs and conceded just four more.More than that, though, he produced the ball of the night to account for Alex Hales. Pitching on leg stump, gripping and spinning past Hales’ bat, it hit middle stump and suggested that his brother Matt may not be the only international spinner in the family. It really was a lovely piece of bowling.Harry Swindells drives powerfully•Getty Images Samit’s upThis must have been a frustrating season for Patel. Despite having represented England in all three formats of the game, he currently finds himself struggling to maintain a place in Nottinghamshire’s top seven and had faced only seven balls (and made a top score of 4 not out) in the competition before this game. But, aged 35 and a veteran of 287 games in this format, he showed his composure and his class here. Yes, he had some fortune with the fielding, for sure. But the six he hit from the fourth ball of the final over – a glorious drive that flew over long-off – must have been partially responsible for ratcheting up the pressure that resulted in Klein’s misfield.Even before that final over, there had been three fours and a sense that Patel knew that if he could take the game deep enough, if he could put some pressure back on Leicestershire, he would be giving his team a chance. Ultimately, he held his nerve and they didn’t.Giant-scaringWith no side having won this tournament as many times as Leicestershire, it probably sounds incongruous to suggest they were on the verge of a giant killing. But the last of their three victories, in 2011, came the last time they reached Finals Day. Only once since, in 2017, had they reached a quarter-final before this. They have a young side with only three internationals including Klein, who has represented Germany twice.Nottinghamshire, meanwhile, had six internationals in their side including two overseas players. It’s only a partially unfair joke to suggest their youth system has its base at Leicestershire Grace Road; it’s far from unusual for them to utilise their superior spending power to lure the best players away from Leicestershire: Stuart Broad, James Taylor and Harry Gurney among them. But though it is Notts who progress, and although you suspect this result will sting long into the winter, Leicestershire may feel they made their point rather eloquently in this game. They might not have any money, they might not have many big names and they might not have an especially lovely recent record. But with a fine team spirit, with some clever plans put in place by their enterprising coach, Paul Nixon, they showed once again that they are a team to be respected in this format, at least.

Liverpool head into the final day of the Premier League season this afternoon with, unfortunately, nothing other than pride to play for against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield.
It is not a game devoid of meaning, however, as it is Jurgen Klopp's last competitive match in charge of the Reds, ending an almost-nine-year stint in the dugout on Merseyside.
In his time at the club, the German boss has won one Premier League title, one Champions League trophy, two League Cups, and one FA Cup, along with the UEFA Supercup.
He will now be hoping for an enjoyable last 90 minutes on the touchline against Wolves, hopefully enjoying his final win in charge of the Premier League giants.
The Reds were held to a 3-3 draw by Aston Villa in their last outing in the top-flight, thanks to a late comeback from the Villans, and Klopp must now make his last big call as the club's manager by dropping Alexis Mac Allister to unleash another midfielder in his place.
Why Alexis Mac Allister should be dropped
The Argentina international should be dropped down to the bench for the final game of the season after his disappointing performance at Villa Park last time out.
He was selected as part of the midfield three, alongside Wataru Endo and Harvey Elliott, in the clash with Unai Emery's side and let the team down with a poor display in the middle of the park.
The World Cup-winning star's worst moment in the match came in the clip above as the Reds ace tried to turn on the ball and was robbed of possession by Calum Chambers, whose intervention led to a goal from Jhon Duran.
Jarrell Quansah played the ball into the midfielder, who had enough space to take a touch and play the ball, but Mac Allister's first touch was far too sloppy, which provided Chambers with a chance to nip in and win his challenge.
His work on the physical side of the game left a lot to be desired all evening against Villa, as he lost six of his nine ground duels and his only aerial contest. This means that the midfield lightweight lost 70% of his duels in total, which shows that the opposition players found it far too easy to get the better of him.
Alexis Mac Allister vs Aston Villa
Mac Allister, who was dribbled past a game-high four times, also made just one key pass and did not create a single 'big chance' for his teammates on the night.
Overall, the 25-year-old flopped against Villa with his woeful play out of possession, including a direct error for Duran's first goal, and did not create much on the ball to make up for his lightweight play.
This is why Klopp must now make his last big call in charge of Liverpool by axing the Argentine wizard to the bench in order to unleash Ryan Gravenberch from the start.
Why Ryan Gravenberch should be unleashed
The Dutch talent has been a substitute in the last two matches, against Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur, and should now be brought back into the starting XI to play ahead of Mac Allister.
Klopp must look back at the 22-year-old midfield general's last performance when selected in the lineup and compare it to the Argentine lightweight's below-par showing last time out, as it suggests that the potential is there for him to offer considerably more to the team.

As you can see in the table above, Gravenberch's display against West Ham from the start in April was a masterclass from the former Bayern Munich gem.
He won the majority of his duels, six more than Mac Allister won against Villa, and completed an eye-catching seven of his eight attempted dribbles to go along with two chances created.
The young talent also scored in his previous start against Fulham, with a clinical finish from the edge of the box, which was his first Premier League goal of the campaign.
Ryan Gravenberch for Liverpool.
Gravenberch also ranks within the top 9% of Premier League midfielders this season for progressive carries per 90 (3.19), and the top 20% for progressive passes per 90 (6.14).
This shows that the Netherlands international is among the best in his position at progressing the ball forward, with his passing and dribbling abilities, to find his teammates in dangerous positions at the top end of the pitch.
Therefore, Klopp must make the big call to drop Mac Allister, after his woeful showing last time out at Villa Park, and unleash the £150k-per-week star from the start against Wolves this afternoon in his final match in charge of the club.
The alternatives to Ryan Gravenberch
If the former Borussia Dortmund tactician does not want to start the Dutchman in place of the World Cup winner, there are alternative options for Liverpool to select in the middle of the park.
Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones were both on the bench, and came on, against Villa and could play in midfield if called upon by Klopp this afternoon.
Dominik Szoboszlai looks dejected for Liverpool
The Hungary international's recent form does not suggest that he deserves a fresh opportunity to showcase his talent from the start, as the former Bundesliga star has gone 12 games without a goal or an assist for the Reds.
It may now be down to him to impress Arne Slot in pre-season ahead of the 2024/25 campaign in order to win his place in the starting XI back.
Jones, meanwhile, has been an unused substitute in two of the last three matches and endured a rough time against Everton in his last Premier League start for Liverpool.

As you can see in the table above, the England U21 international was dominated in physical duels, losing six of his seven contests, and offered very little defensively.
Therefore, Klopp should bring Gravenberch in for Mac Allister, ahead of Szoboszlai and Jones, as possibly his last big call in the dugout at Anfield.
Klopp must ditch Liverpool "revelation" for his final game

Aaron Beard toppled the Middlesex top order after Adam Wheater’s chanceless 83 not out put Essex on course for the Bob Willis Trophy final.Fast bowler Beard took three wickets in 21 balls after tea to leave Middlesex with their backs against the wall at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford. The visitors did tiptoe into a lead but having ended the day on 123 for 6, ahead by 25, they’ll need an extraordinary effort from the tail to set Essex a tricky fourth-innings chase.Earlier, Wheater posted a three-year high score to give Essex a commanding first-innings lead of 98, as they pocketed four bonus points. After 15 wickets had fallen on the opening day at the Cloudfm County Ground, Chelmsford, batting seemed much easier for the most part on the day two. Wheater used the friendlier conditions to his advantage with a mature innings, partnered well by Ryan ten Doeschate and Simon Harmer. The home side’s morning, in which they lost just three wickets, was spoiled slightly by a back spasm suffered by ten Doeschate. The former captain had seemingly run an innocuous single unharmed, but felt a problem while scratching out his guard. He needed five minutes of treatment on the pitch before retiring hurt on 31, having put on 35 with Wheater.Harmer continued with Wheater and took Essex to a potentially valuable batting point. It added to their three bowling points from the first day, and with Derbyshire’s batting woes, could be an important factor in the race to secure a place in the final at Lord’s later this month.Wheater, who hasn’t scored a County Championship century since returning from a stint at Hampshire in 2016, cruised to his fifty in 76 balls. He and allrounder Harmer put on 72 before Harmer was lbw – the first of three quick wickets for Martin Andersson. The fast bowler then had Beard and Sam Cook caught in the slips in the 62nd over to bring ten Doeschate back to the crease, albeit with Dan Lawrence as his runner. The 40-year-old, who didn’t field, added 12 more runs to his tally before he departed to hand Andersson a fourth – returning figures of 4 for 38.Adam Wheater pulls during his half-century•Getty Images
Jamie Porter was the final man to go, caught behind off Tim Murtagh, to leave Wheater stranded on his highest first-class county score since he reached 88 versus Somerset in August 2017.All eyes were now on the Bob Willis Trophy’s leading wicket-taker Harmer and whether he could spin his usual magic. Instead it was the seamers, in particular Beard, who took centre stage from the Hayes Close End by bowling incessant line and length.Sam Cook pocketed an early scalp as Sam Robson, on likely his final innings of the summer, pushed to Harmer at second slip. Offspinner Harmer, who was a threat throughout his 21 overs, then picked up Nick Gubbins leg before on the cusp of tea. When Beard entered the attack he found pace to accompany accuracy, demonstrated perfectly by sending Steve Eskinazi’s off stump catapulting with a beautiful delivery which straightened.Max Holden had provided a rear-guard with 37, which included a pulled six off Porter, but became Beard’s second victim when he also lost his off-peg. Middlesex, still in arrears, were then 84 for 5 when a driving Andersson edged Beard to second slip.John Simpson and former Essex loanee Robbie White took their side into the lead with a 38-run partnership. But Harmer returned for a second spell to pin White leg-before to set up a likely three-day finish.
With Che Adams on course to leave as a free agent upon the expiry of his Southampton contract, the Saints are reportedly considering a move to sign a replacement who is looking to rediscover his best form.
Southampton transfer news
Adams' exit looks more of a surprise now that Southampton have made their return to the Premier League, defeating Leeds United in the play-off final at Wembley. But it is an exit they've got to handle nonetheless and replacing the Scotland international will be no easy task even with their returned top-flight status.
With that said, their place in the Premier League will at least help their recruitment this summer. Without it, Southampton could have faced the risk of losing further star players, but with it, the focus should be on handing Russell Martin the best possible squad to seal safety at the first time of asking in England's top tier.

One player who could help with that is a familiar face too. According to Graeme Bailey for The Boot Room, Southampton are considering a move to sign Armando Broja, who is reportedly keen on the possibility of returning to St Mary's, where he enjoyed success on loan in the 2021/22 season.
Armando Broja celebrating a goal for Chelsea.
At a career crossroads after struggling on loan at Fulham in the season just gone, a return to familiar surroundings could finally help Broja on his way to rediscovering his best form. The deal may not be one out of reach for the Saints either, given that Chelsea no longer value the forward at £50m, but instead a reported £30m.
Broja has proven his ability at the club before and as Southampton look to replace Adams, the Albanian could be the man they turn towards this summer.
"Strong" Broja needs Southampton move
It's been a nightmare couple of seasons for Broja. Since the end of this loan spell at Southampton, he has been one of many players to struggle when attempting to earn minutes in a packed Chelsea squad, before his loan spell at Fulham quickly became dominated by his inability to take the in-form Rodrigo Muniz's place under Marco Silva. Now, he desperately needs his next move to go right, which is where Southampton could come in.

Still just 22 years old, Broja has plenty of time to find the form that once earned the praise of former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who said via The Metro: "Well I gave him his debut at Chelsea so I did know him!
"He’s a very nice, very good lad and a very talented young boy. "He came into us at the start of the Covid times, trained with us and showed the attributes that I think you’re seeing now in the Premier League at Southampton. He’s fast, strong, has a real eye for goal and he’s a very, very good young player so I’m very aware of his strengths in a Southampton team playing very well."
Bangladesh’s critical Covid-19 pandemic situation has forced the BCB into postponing the 2020-21 season of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) to next year. According to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, the board’s primary difficulty in organising the tournament this year lay in hosting overseas players and broadcast personnel in an environment that is currently deemed unsafe. This week the board took ginger steps into resuming competitive cricket in the country with a three-team 50-over tournament, which is being held inside a bio-bubble entirely. The BCB plans to orgainse a separate – possibly five-team – T20 tournament in mid-November, and has proposed that they finish the remainder of the 2019-20 Dhaka Premier League (DPL) later in the year. The 2020-21 BPL is next on their agenda and while it was always going to be held in the latter part of the season (March or April), the longevity of the pandemic could alter those plans too.Hassan, who ruled out hosting the BPL outside Bangladesh due to high costs, said that the board might feel confident of hosting a substantial band of foreigners once the pandemic situation improves in the country.”Everything depends on the conditions and circumstances but we are not holding the BPL this year,” Hassan said. “We are looking at next year, but we also don’t want to give up on any tournaments. With BPL comes the need for foreign players and production people [to travel to Bangladesh]. I don’t know if we can handle so many people in a tournament as large as the BPL.”Hassan also said that during the BCB’s discussions around the T20 tournament in November, there was a strong argument in favour of not allowing overseas cricketers.”We’re discussing [the involvement] of foreign players and no final decision has been taken,” he said. “If we can bring foreign players then it’s good but it’s not like we must bring them. Our first priority is to create opportunity for local players to play.”We’re looking to see which foreign players are available and what their quality would be. It could be that a local player might be better than a foreign player. We don’t want to keep our local players out and play foreign stars. We have to first understand the standard of [foreign] players who might be coming.”Hassan also hinted at the possibility of having the 2019-20 DPL completed this year.”Our main problem is to create a perfect bio-bubble, but it will be tough on the clubs to ensure this,” he said. “They are unlikely to put them up in expensive hotels. BKSP (the sports institute based outside Dhaka) is a very good option but we must find out if they have space for so many players. They have three proper grounds and we usually need three grounds to hold the DPL. If we can do this three-team one-day series and the T20 tournament next month, I don’t want to delay the DPL.”

Chelsea are ready to consider parting company with a £50 million star if they seal a deal for Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise, as new head coach Enzo Maresca also looks to trim his bloated squad.

Upon returning from an injury which kept him out for a decent portion of 2023/2024, Olise returned to his prolific best in quick fashion – racking up 10 goals and six assists in 19 Premier League appearances for the Eagles.
The 22-year-old's contract includes a complex £60 million release clause, which is apparently only valid for Champions League clubs, meaning Chelsea may have to fork out a larger amount.
Regardless, they're believed to be ahead of fellow suitors like Man United in the race for Olise (The Guardian), with Sky Sports pundit Micah Richards claiming he has the potential to be "world-class".

"He is going to be world-class. He is just one of them young players who needs to be guided in the right way," he said on The Rest Is Football podcast (via Tribuna).
"If he was ever to leave, or when he leaves Palace, if he picks the right team where he is allowed to express himself he is going to be a superstar. He is that good. He is going to the very top."
Chelsea have been in talks over Olise with personal terms also reportedly agreed, and it is believed that the west Londoners could use makeweights in any potential deal for the winger. One player who's been mentioned as a possibility in this regard is Raheem Sterling, who signed for Chelsea in a £50 million deal from Man City two years ago.
Raheem Sterling
However, even if Sterling doesn't go the other way, journalist Pete O'Rourke claims he could be out the door regardless – if the Blues do in fact get Olise over the line.
Chelsea to consider bids for Sterling if Olise signs
Writing for Football Insider, he says that Chelsea will consider bids for Sterling if Olise joins this summer, coming after a regrettable campaign for the 29-year-old overall.
The high-earning winger did manage eight goals and four assists in the Premier League, but played more of a bit-part role under Mauricio Pochettino towards the back end of 2023/2024 – seeing his role in the first team diminish and making more appearances off the bench.
Maresca currently has an abundance of wide players in his squad, and Olise coming would mean yet another name in that position. Chelsea may look to sell Sterling as a result, especially factoring in that he'd be even further down the pecking order.

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Oct-2020″Suryakumar Yadav from Mumbai to watch out for in future!”That’s part of a tweet from Rohit Sharma, circa 2011. Since then, Yadav spent two years with the Mumbai Indians, then five with the Kolkata Knight Riders, and, since 2018, he’s back with the Mumbai Indians. Cameos have been aplenty, runs have flowed at different periods of his IPL career, but the one thing that was missing in his game was the ability to finish the matches that he helped set up. Till now. After hitting an unbeaten match-winning 43-ball 79 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore – that took his team to 16 points after 12 games – Yadav said it was overcoming that deficiency, of not being there till the end in chases, that gave him the most joy in Wednesday’s win, and that it was something that had been discussed in the camp before the season began too.”When we started the tournament, the team management and Rohit came to me and said ‘you have played enough cricket now, it’s high time now you take the game deep, and bat as long as possible; it provides a good platform for the team and even it will be good for yourself’,” Yadav told host broadcaster Star Sports after the match. “So I badly wanted to do it and I’m very happy with that.”I was looking to finish the game since a long time. And sitting back in the [hotel] room I was thinking how do I do it? So I wanted to learn what my game is exactly, and just go out there and finish the game for the team.”Yadav, who scored 512 and 424 runs in the IPL in 2018 and in 2019 respectively, and is on course for another 400-plus season, however, has not played for India yet. And he did not make either the 16-man ODI squad or the 15-man T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Australia.

Yadav chose not to bring up the topic, but Kieron Pollard, leading the Mumbai Indians in Sharma’s injury-enforced absence, wasn’t going to ignore the elephant in the room.”Imagine you have someone who bats at that strike rate, especially when you lose an early wicket because he comes at No. 3. Time and time again, no matter the situation he continues to show the class of a player he is,” Pollard said. “Deep down inside, he must be very disappointed not getting to don the blue for India but I’m sure he’s very, very close, I’m sure.”He’s done some amazing things for us as a franchise, and the most he can do is continue to let the bat talk and score more runs for us and take us all the way. To me, he just keeps getting better. If he continues to be this consistent then at some point in time, you are going to get rewarded. Nothing happens before its time, and long may it continue for us as a franchise.”
